The Metrics:

Based on your feedback from last year, we’ve refined our metrics to focus on what you told us were the features and functionality you look for in a cart bag.

cart-bag-features

Testers were asked to put clubs into a bag, take clubs out, use the pockets, zippers, and carry straps, and to place the bags onto carts. Notes and scores were taken for each individual metric (view Scoring Metrics tab). For push cart testing we utilized BagBoy (Quad and TriSwivel II) and Sun Mountain V1 carts.

The Most Wanted Cart Bag should offer all the bells and whistles and plenty of storage space; luxury, looks and functionality.

    • Storage – The number and usefulness of pockets. Types of storage, eg: external tee holder, insulated drink pocket, ball pocket. Ultimately, how functional is the available storage as a whole.
    • Style – Are color options limited, or has the manufacturer made an effort to create a colorway to suit a variety of individual tastes?
    • On Cart Functionality – How well the bag fit on both riding and push carts. Is the functionality of the bag (pockets, glove strips, towel loops, etc.) impeded in any way by cart straps?
    • Club Binding – Regardless of the number of dividers, this metric simply measures how much club grab/binding occurred when inserting and removing clubs from a bag.
    • Top Grab Handle – Is there one included? Is it easily graspable, or has the manufacturer placed form ahead of function?
    • Features – How feature-rich is a given bag. Do each of those features function as intended?
    • Full Length Dividers – How many full-length dividers does the bag offer. Because full length dividers do not always equate directly to less club binding, the number of full length dividers does not directly factor into the overall rating.

Ping Pioneer II

bestOverallPioneer

Good: 15 full length dividers. More than ample storage. A huge insulated drink pouch that might swallow up a 12-pack with ice. All the bells and whistles and a sharp design.

Bad: The Pioneer doesn’t leave much to be desired, but a larger towel loop would be useful.

Notes: When looking for a true cart bag, you can’t go wrong with the Pioneer. Load her up. She can hold every piece of gear you’d ever need. Keep beers cold deep into the back 9, and be the envy of your buddies as you stylishly wind your way around the course with this bag in tow.

Buy PING Pioneer II

 Sun Mountain C130

RunnerUpOverallSunC130

Good: Two towel loops. 14 full length dividers. Lots of storage and a sneaky strap pass-through that routes the cart strap under the pocket.

Bad: Like the Pioneer, there’s not much to be improved here. Add a velcro glove patch and a bit more insulated storage space and this bag could take top honors.

Notes: Sun Mountain’s C130 held its own again this year with a strong finish. If you value two towel loops and a strap pass-through and can settle for a little less insulated storage space, the C130 is your ultimate riding option.

Buy Sun Mountain C130

 Ping DLX II

RunnerUpOverallPingDLX

Good: Nearly a staff bag that’s fully function on your cart. The 5 full length dividers do a surprisingly good job of minimizing club binding.

Bad: The relative lack of full-length dividers will likely turn some off of the DLX II, though we point you back to the above note.

Notes: Another outstanding PING bag – it’s like PING wants to be in your cart. Not only is the DLX II a style leader, but it’s big enough to take on the whales, and totally functional.

Buy PING DLX II

Ping Traverse

PushCardPingTraverse

Good: The perfect push cart bag. It offers ample storage in a comparable svelte package. The Traverse sits well on a push cart and has enough insulated space to keep you hydrated, but without encouraging you to overdo it. 14 full length dividers keep your clubs organized and minimize banging over bumpy terrain.

Bad: Won’t overwhelm you with storage space.

Notes: Whether hopping on a riding cart with some buddies or pushing your way through your home course, this bag was designed to travel well. No more sticking your glove to your head covers, just use the patch.

Buy PING Traverse

Mizuno Eight50

MinimalistMizuno850

Good: A smaller design that prioritizes balance over storage. The EIGHT50 offers plenty of pockets with enough storage to get you through any round.

Bad: Only 4 full length dividers (and only 4 total dividers) might leave you wondering how to properly organize 14 clubs.

Notes: When I played golf with my grandfather, he never had the biggest bag. Size matters, and sometimes smaller is better. If you don’t like carrying unnecessary weight, this bag is certainly one to consider.

I have been using a Team Effort cart bag for the past 5 years. It has 14 dividers plus putter well and 9 zippered pockets, including one that is insulated for cold beverages. BTW, it is covered in Blue/White with University of Kentucky logos all over it. Alas with multiple uses every week of the year it is time to replace it so I once again look to Team Effort Cart Bags. The design has changed but the UK Logos are still prevalent. Gotta go for the Big Blue nation and my Kentucky Wildcats. It has started many a conversation on the golf course and I have met many other Kentucky Fans because they saw my bag….Go Big Blue!

The Team Effort bags should be included with the Bag Buyers Guide in the future.

I bought the Ping Pioneer II golf bag at the start of this season. I couldn’t agree more!
It’s not mentioned, but some of the best features include the velcro attachment for your gloves and a key holder inside the right side pocket – love this! TaylorMade used to do this too, but quit a few years ago. The magnetic flip top on the upper pocket makes a great place to store my rangefinder for easy access. I play TM irons and woods, yet sport a Ping bag – because it’s the best one available!

BUYERS BEWARE: I just bought the pretty blue Pioneer 2 bag to match my G30’s. It is gorgeous and (too?) spacious. I don’t need a wardrobe in both big side pockets. But the main thing is getting clubs IN and OUT in the middle areas was so difficult I felt like I was like having a personal war with the bag. This is utterly ridiculous. I literally could not get my 9 iron out of this bag until I ripped it with all my might, at which time I thought I was going to rip the grip. Why would anyone make a bag with 15 dividers when you can only carry 14 clubs anyway? To make things tighter? I traded it in within 24 hours of purchase and got the Traverse 2 bag. THESE roomy dividers are a dream! Plus, the zippers are better, the cooler is smaller and doesn’t affect other pockets, with a little drain, and the bag is lighter yet big enough for everything I need – and it’s pretty as well. I HIGHLY recommend the Traverse 2 for serious golfers getting a cart bag.

Nice. I would most enthusiastically recommend the Kahma bag. I would be interested in your assessment also. This one is for those who like an organized bag with a rack built in to the design. Comes in two different styles. I’m on my 2nd one in 10 years. No club rattling and or dings. Lotsa pockets. Needs some improvement but overall an excellent bag. I get comments all the time about what a cool bag it is.

Also, would like to see an electric push cart evaluation from low end to high end. Especially interested in the Caddy Trek and any other “follow me” cart as well as kangaroo and remote based carts. Want to walk but hate being hunched over the handle of my push cart.

Do this years C-130’s have the ability to stand up when fully loaded? The one I had before I got my Pioneer, when loaded, could not stand up on a flat surface. The Sun Mountain rep and I had a long discussion about that at a local golf store (he happened to be there), and we loaded it up with a set of clubs and some other generic stuff and it fell on its face. He said the problem was noted and they would fix it.

That is the only reason I sold my C-130 and got the Pioneer.

There is one metric I really miss in the comparison and that is how waterproof the different bags are. Especially if you play in the wet from time to time having a bag that keeps your clubs and stuff dry is very important. I get no bag is completely water tight forever, but at least score how it performs when bought.
      Except for that nice review.

It’s interesting to see how almost all the bags in the test are missing the top handle from the front side of the bag. Has it always been so with non-staff cart bags? I think it’s the biggest omission in my Mizuno Tour Cart bag.

I recently purchased the DLX II, and it is a ridiculously good looking bag. Nice “carbon fibre” like panel sections and limited dividers definitely do their best to stop tangle. Most importantly, it feels super durable from head to toe, and PING have added nice little touches to storage, with an almost hidden pouch in the bottom rear to house the rain cover, as well as integrated umbrella sleeve. Heck I could point out more, like the larger, easier to use zippers for ball storage! PING took a great deal in designing this bag. It weighs a ton, but this bad boy rests perfectly on my Clic Model 8. Perhaps the only minor criticism is I wish they made the cooler pocket a little taller. E.g standard Gatorade bottles fit x2, but its a squeeze. Nonetheless, a great job PING, well done.

Cart bags are rather personal and depend a lot on how they are being used. If it’s mostly on a riding cart, that’s one thing, but if it is used on a push cart, a really good cart bag will suck depending on the push cart being used. Generally, if a push cart is being used, its best to pick a bag that is made for that cart. If not, be sure to test the bag you are considering on the cart you use (with clubs in it!). I have a Sun Mountain bag, primarily because I have a Sun Mountain cart. I have tried other cart bags on the cart with varying degrees of likeability.

I will also say that when going from push cart to riding cart and back again, some bags require me to move clubs around in the bag; accessibility to certain clubs is an issue for me. It then becomes confusing when pulling a club. Maybe it’s just me… :)

I tried the Chamber Cart Bag and went through 2 of them. I broke the zipperless ball pocket in both and ended up with balls all over my trunk. I wish they gave us the option for a zipper, because it was a great bag otherwise and I would probably still have it.

I had an Ogio carry bag several years ago that had the same problem with the ZBp

And before you say it, I carried minimal amount of stuff in the ZBP. I really think their “signature” feature has cost them customers.

Their “valuables’ pockets were not that big either (haven’t looked recently), especially the model a few years ago that had the top pockets that flipped up to let the strap go under it. My keys and wallet barely fit. I really wanted that one too, it didn’t have the ZBP!

Not much of a write up here… a little sparse for MGS standards. There are so many bags that were tested, but the review really doesn’t tell me anything about why the ones you’ve listed are better than the others. What separated the Ping bags – that did so well in your testing – from the Nike ones (which look very nice)? It’s this type of info the MGS reader wants to know.

I was hoping the Sun Mountain Tour Series cart bag would be in this review. Looks very similar to the high scoring C130 bag but all dolled up. Anyone have any thoughts on SM’s Tour Series bag and how similar is it to the C130 bag?

      Hi
I have the Tour Series Cart Bag and am very pleased with it. A few small demerits: the cold pocket is very small. Two of the pockets are very hard to get at as they are on the opposite side to where the bag would face you on a cart or trolley, but I use them for lesser used items like tees in the smaller one and bag cover in the larger. In this regard it is similar to a ‘staff’ design.
The other pockets are just great and hold all the rubbish one accumulates. The quality is typical Sun Mountain and as such very, very good. I think that the quality is actually second to none, but it has to be said that we do not have some of the makes you mention in the test here in the UK eg BagBoy, Datrek & Orimar.
Just for the record, my last bag was a Ping Pioneer Cart Bag and the bottom grab handle did not last 12 months before it tore away……..(However, from the pictures on this test, it appears they have changed the design of this handle.)
