First Look – Tommy Armour 845 Black Driver

Today we’ve got your first look at the upcoming Tommy Armour 845 Black driver.

When Golf Digest publishes its 2016 Hot List, it’s a safe bet the new Black won’t crack super-five-star-Callaway-Ft.Knox-Gold-Medal status (although we’re told it has been submitted). Regardless, we think the upcoming Tommy Armour release is noteworthy for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, Tommy Armour (which , as you may recall, is now the house brand for Sports Authority) says the Black performs, and backs that claim up with data from Golf Labs (more on that below).

Secondly, the everyday price of the driver will be $149, and will likely be offered as low as $99 during Black Friday and Father’s Day sales events.

845Black - 2

That’s right, a $149, designed in the USA by actual golf industry R&D veterans, driver.

According to the Tommy Armour team, the new Black offers several improvements over the original TA845.

Cup Face Technology – There’s absolutely nothing new about Cup Face Technology (Callaway is using it in everything), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t benefits. By leveraging  a cup face design, companies, including Tommy Armour, are able to moves critical welds farther from the face. This reduces the hardening effect that results from the welding process, which in-turn helps increase the sweet area of the face.

More Efficient Head Shape – The new design produces a slightly elongated head with a low/back CG and a bit of extra weight in the heel. The overall result is higher MOI with a draw bias.

Improved Stock Shaft Offering – This time around, Tommy Armour is going with a sub-60 gram, low torque shaft from Grafalloy that should provide a more stable profile than the previous stock offering.

Performance?

As for performance, we can’t personally attest to anything, but it’s worth noting that Sports Authority commissioned a test at Golf Labs, where the 845 Black was hit side by side against the old TA845 as well as several competitors, including other Big Box custom products.

TA-comparison

It’s important to note that these results are based on robot testing, and 95 MPH, and only includes center strikes. We can’t be certain of how the 845 Black will perform in the hands of actual golfers, especially when they start missing the sweet spot.

That said, we’re talking about a driver that will be available for $350 to $400 less than flagship offerings from Callaway and TaylorMade, and $200 less than most anyone else’s entry level offering.

The Sales Challenge

845 Black

Apart from the limited availability, the bigger challenge for Tommy Armour will be competing in today’s discount driven reality. With some of the best drivers of this season, including our Most Wanted Winning Cobra FLY-Z, now available for just a few dollars more, and previous offerings like TaylorMade’s SLDR still available new for less, even at $99, the new Tommy Armour 845 Black may prove a tough sell.

Still…$99. Those alone makes it worth a look should you find yourself in the golf department at Sports Authority.

Does anyone sell Tommy Armour in the US anymore??? My boyfriend had a TA driver: 845 DLT – TA-25 – S Flex – 9.5* that broke along the club face this fall and I tried searching out Tommy Armour to report the issue and to hopefully purchase a new club for him, but that search started in Austria and dead-ended at my local Dick’s Sporting Goods with no luck. :-(

The best advice I can give is that you keep looking on eBay or just get a different Driver. I just looked and there was none.

Back on June 21, 2016 I was able to purchase this driver after searching since last November and especially since April. My persistence paid off. I made friends with my local Sports Authority Manager. She actually helped me with a store swap on the latest Tommy Armour 845 Irons with the matching Hybrids. With all the discounts I only spent $89.00.

The Driver was supposed to be available at SA, however they announced Bankruptcy and have since Liquidated as of this week. She told me that only a few stores in the most popular Golfing areas would receive these if any. I called everywhere across the USA and couldn’t find it. There was also supposed to be some matching Fairways and Hybrids and she actually was able to pull up some info on those items on the company’s computer. I will tell you right now that you won’t find this in the USA and if you do you may be the only person who does. I located one of these Black Drivers outside the USA and it cost me $258.00USD with the exchange rate. I can get more of these drivers in 9.5 & 10.5 lofts with either an R or S Flex Shaft. It is the same driver in the pictures here on this post and it has a Grafalloy ProLaunch Gold Graphite Shaft. Personally, I don’t care for the color of the shaft. The Swing Tack Grip feels very nice and your hands will never slip from these grips because they have excellent traction. It is obvious when you inspect and waggle the driver that it has a low and back center of gravity. At address it sets up square to the target and has a very nice feel. The Drivers face has a nice sound and you can tell it’s going to launch long down the fairway when hit. I have not hit mine yet because of a work-related injury but as soon as I unpacked this Driver I was impressed by the look of the Head (not the shaft because of color) and I could tell it means business. The PVD black finish is gorgeous and has some accents on the sole and the crown near the rear. Nothing distracting at all. I’m sure if your like me you’ll want to find a shaft that matches the characteristics of the factory stock shaft or maybe just get fitted for a shaft that is optimum for your game. It comes with a Headcover that slips on and has a stretchable black nylon sock attached to protect the shaft from your irons etc…however, I found a much more attractive Headcover on Ebay which is a nice black leather Tommy Armour 845 Driver Headcover about 12″ long with gold piping on the sides and the words Tommy Armour nicely stitched with white thread. There are several of these available on eBay. I have pictures of my Driver and the headcovers. I have not removed the protective clear plastic wrap from the head nor the sticker on the club face. I thought I would be able to post the pictures here but it appears I can’t. In fact I posted a prior comment a few months ago and it’s not here. Maybe it’s on FaceBook. Anyhow I’m Tedd2k and I’m on Yahoo, if you send me an email I’ll share some pictures. Regards, Tedd

I think there is a lot of value in the fact that these were all machine hits and center strikes. I would like to see it go through a “human review” at MGS to see what happens on mis-hits.

I worked for SA once upon time, and bought a TA Box set as a spare for my brothers when they came to town. I can shoot my typical score with that set, and even though I am in love with my Cobra Amp Cell Woods, I will give this a try just for giggles because I know the price doesn’t define a great piece of equipment.

I might take a look at the T/A driver not a bad price , for me l refuse to pay $400 for driver almost 500 for the new TM coming out. Just cause these companies want to pay millions to the players. I’m 66 , got the old Cobra SS-427 hit avg 240 – 250 and still out drive my son and he’s pals on the weekends most of the time.

As soon as I can get a lefty I want to try it. I love putting good but inexpensive clubs in my bag and then whipping my buddies for some cash on Sunday morning.

Cup face technology…I remember when MacGregor was a pioneer with that tech. The NVG2 Tour driver was awesome and I still play the NVG2 Mid irons. They are as long and straight as anything offered today.

There’s a blast from the past! You aren’t kidding about that NVG2Tour driver! I had on e of those and that thing was monster long. I loved the feel and sound of that thing as well. Think it was loaded w/hot melt.

I still occasionally think about trying to find the nvg2 tour on eBay. I still think it is one of my favourite drivers especially if you hit it in the upper portion of the face.

Price means a great deal to me and if this baby flies, I would bag it .I like being the underdog .Just because the price is greatly inflated doesn’t mean it works..
This just says volumes about what the actual mark up price of the big 4 or 5.

Agree 100%. My objective when it comes to golf equipment is finding that balance between affordability and performance. It is rewarding when someone asks, what is that club? All the more so when it isn’t what is in everyone else’s bag.

Sounds like a great opportunity to reach out to Sports Authority and see if they will provide several to be “Tested” and “Reviewed” by the MGS Members.

My thoughts exactly! As for mark ups this actually shows how much of the mark up on equipment is attributable to the cost of marketing. That’s the reason why a quality ball like Snell might sell for $14 less a dozen than other high end golf balls. We may like it that the guys on tour play the same brand or a similar model to ours but we are also paying for it.

There’s some validity to the point made about it’s relationship to Sports Authority in that it may be perceived as less then a quality product. If it was available for testing at a golfing specialty retailer I think it would have more credibility where it could be tested against other drivers. I’ve seen the clubs and balls on the clearance tables at the local SA store and it sort of tells you about the quality, or perceived lack thereof, how golfers feel about the Tommy Armour brand.

I have to agree with mcavoy and McasyeyM-the hardest thing will be to convince people to actually give this thing a hit. It seems in the driver market, low price is almost an anti-sales argument.
Price it high, color it loud and watch it sell! I think even the statistics aren’t going to do it for most consumers.
Probably the best thing that Tommy Armour/Sports Authority can do is get it in the hands of as many testers as possible with a fan base (the usual blogs/youtubers). If it really does perform, then it wil pik up some momentum.

I think that being in Sports Authority will be its biggest limitation. In my 34 years on this earth, I’ve only ever bought 2 clubs from SA, a pre-hybrid Dunlop driving iron ( decent for the time, but i think i was in 8th grade) and a golden bear putter (work great for me for many, many years), but these days it’s not really a place I look at when club testing. They do carry some of the OEM bigger brands, but with so few options to choose from, it’s not really worth my limited time.
At that low of an entry level price point, and today’s standard of making drivers adjustable, many will overlook them, but if they are included in the Most wanted driver testing (even if you had to stretch the budget a bit to get a few) and perform decently, they may get a look from some newer golfers.

Their biggest challenge will be convincing people its not junk. And it saddens me to say that since my first serious set of clubs in the late 90’s after a 15 year hiatus from the game was a set of TA 845 irons.
