SPY PICS! – Taylormade ATV Wedges

While the first half of the week was all about the new RocketBallz and R11S, what TaylorMade hasn’t officially announced is their new line of ATV wedges. It’s perhaps a bit strange that the new wedge borrows its name from a line of Adidas sneaker, but this type of co-branding isn’t surprising when two huge companies merge.

I think it’s fair to say that TaylorMade hasn’t produced a wedge that actually made an impact on the market in years. The XFT never really caught on, and while the RAC wedges were nice enough, golfers clearly preferred offerings from Vokey and Cleveland.

We’ll reserve judgement until we see some better pics (particulary of the ATV sole), but from what we see here, well…the road ahead is probably going to be rocky.

Well it’s out and it looks just like the pics. Have to say it is one of the ugliest wedges I’ve ever seen. Looks like a $20 wedge from Walmart. Hope it plays much better than it looks.

Look, if you put this stick on the floor next to a Vokey, Cleveland, Nike VR or Callaway, the ATV (Lol, geez) wont even get a 2nd look. It’s just not an appealing looking wedge at all. I agree with the previous bloggers. It’s ugly and cheap looking.

Will need to see some better pictures but based on these this wedge might not stack up too well against some pretty strong competition from Nike, Callaway, Titleist, Cleveland, Mizuno, and Cobra too for that matter.

Seriously? Are yall not even gonna give this wedge a chance. There’s obviously some reason they even released this wedge. I’m pretty sure TMAG or any other golf company for that matter would release and product without thinking that theyve got that certain product down perfectly. If a club works, then game it. Look at the PING Eye 2. Possibly the ugliest, and one of the best wedges ever produced, AND it is still in play on the Tour, AND was re-released by PING. If something works, use it.

Brandon – Totally in agreement with you. I don’t love what I see from the angles we have, but there are similarly designed wedges (again, based on what I can see from these photos) that people are celebrating, so there perhaps is some anti-TM backlash here.

The photos we received, when compared to the in-hand pics elsewhere probably make the ATV look worse than it actually is.

As you mentioned, there are other companies that have produced wedges many would consider ugly…and yet they’ve reached near legendary status in the equipment industry. IF the ATV wedge proves to be an unusual foray for TaylorMade into an area of function over form…well, then I suppose I commend them.

I’ll definitely have plenty more to say about this wedge, but not until I see it address and find out exactly how versatile the sole grind actually is.

Brian Cass nailed it. Seriously, a cavity channel on a wedge? The last time I saw one that big was when I was crossing from England to France. Spend the $100 on a lesson instead, or maybe a pool cue.

i think only the big taylormade fans are going to want this as the other folks are going to lean toward the classic wedge shape that cleveland, vokey, and a bunch of other OEMs produce.

John just nailed it on the head.

Does every club TMade makes have to look like an art project?

Luke Donald was the first player to ever lead the PGA Money list and Euro list in the same year…and he still missed gobs of fairways with the ostrich egg. Wonder how much more money he would have made with a more accurate driver.

How’s that equipment/brand change going for Camillo Villegas? No body fat….and no mojo.

Shoulda just named it the Hack O’ Matic. Seriously, TMAG wedges suck. XFT was a rip-off of another brand (spindoctor?), and may have been the worst feeling wedge I’ve ever hit. The only decent TMAG wedges were the 300 Forged, by Muira.

Do these club makert truely think we are all that stupid? Clevland now Taylor Made slap a little paint on their old designs and expect the public to think this is some wonderful innovation and we should all run to the golf shop and get us some.
Want some real innovation? Drop market prices by 35% and they won’t have to paint anything.

Or hold off on new offering for at least 2 years. I’m surprised not enough has caught on to that… how can a company keep coming out with new clubs every year or 6 months and expect people to really believe every offering has some form of innovation? I mean, TMaG proved it themselves, when they released the r9, then the r9 460 (30cc’s bigger, no MWT), then the SuperTri (FCT, MWT, 460cc’s and black). It’s like “Duh… you could’ve just done that with the first r9 offering”. They just want to sucker you in, make you feel like you’re missing out on something, so you keep playing the game.

“If you need that big of and undercut cavity in your wedge, you need to be bowling or cow tipping, not golfing”. Thank You!

I bet that’s where their selling point is going to be, but nothing they’ve done here is new. Sounds like they’re just banking on the “We hope no one notices, but we’re regurgitating technology and using our name brand to trump it up” way of thinking. Acer’s XC, Maltby’s M-Series 1.82UC and Cleveland’s CG14 (though it was filled with plastic) come to mind.

They should make them 38+”, instead of the 35-36 inch range… that way they can say they’re the longest-hitting wedges ever created. LOL!

dont forget the Mizuno MX-Series! (flop)

      GolfSpy T

A good point, but one distinction is that Mizuno offered the MX series as an alternative to the MP series. Basically they wanted to make a wedge to match their GI clubs (which they’ve done again with the JPX wedges). As far as I know, the new ATV will be the only wedge in the TM lineup. We’re starting to see more and more companies offer multiple wedge designs to better match their iron offerings. Whether or not it catches on a larger scale remains to be seen.

The MX-23s didn’t have a channel on 8-PW. They transitioned into more of a muscle plug at the back of the cavity for those clubs. They felt very solid and smooth, although did launch too high.

XFT Never really caught on? Pretty sure it caught on with the higher level caliber of player because they could decide what type of face they would like in there wedge. Maybe choppers can’t see the big picture but a myriad of tour pros have and still do game the XFT today!!

      Reply

      GolfSpy T

I didn’t say nobody bought them, but fundamentally a relative few “higher level caliber” players bought them. So did a few of the choppers you describe. But my point was simply that the XFT failed to make a serious run at Vokey or Clevleland. I don’t have the numbers, but I suspect the XFT was outsold by Callaway wedges, and possibly Mizuno too.

Finally…discussing performance and industry opinions in the context of tour pros is a ludicrous notion. Whether it’s TaylorMade, Vokey, or Clevleland, they all pay Tour Pros to bag their clubs (and say nice things about them). Tour pros I’d be willing to bet don’t actually care about swapping faces. If they want/need something different, they go to the van and get a new wedge.

Not to mention club companies will pay pro’s not under contract ~$2000 to bag certain clubs on Saturdays, which happens to be the same day the Darrel Survey hangs out to get their numbers.

From the pictures I can say that I’m not a huge fan of the graphics, but…

with a wedge, for me anyway, I wouldn’t ever evaluate the looks without a clean look at the topline. Performance? Well, know idea what if any claims TM will make in that regard. What we’re hearing is that versatility will be the talking point.

Without the benefit of being able to manipulate the sole and see how the bounce looks with the changes, well…I’ve decided to keep my mouth shut on the subject.
