Is the Spieth Shoe A Sign of Bigger Things to Come?
We pushed ourselves to create shoes that make athletes better through performance-enhancing details like Charged Cushioning, breathable and water-resistant uppers, aggressive-yet-comfortable traction on the sole, and a structured heel for greater stability.”

If there’s a golf industry rumor…if someone is for sale, or even might be for sale, the Under Armour name inevitably comes up. Under Armour is buying Cleveland, Callaway, Titleist, and even TaylorMade.

Uh, yeah.

The theory behind all of these non-acquisitions is that Under Armour wants into the golf equipment business.  And so, as you might expect, some have also said that Under Armour already has clubs in development.

Sorry…not buying that either.

Sure, there is some logic behind some of this. Under Armour has the World #1, Jordan Spieth, under contract for the next several years, so you can argue that a foray into hard goods (especially if it can acquire an established company) might make some sense. You could also argue that UA’s more modern approach to the business of sport might be exactly the sort of thing that could shift the proverbial paradigm. UA could jumpstart the market.

Of course, I could just as easily argue that margins are tight, established companies with long histories are struggling to maintain, let alone, grow. Golf doesn’t like change and if Nike hasn’t been able to turn the hard goods market ass-end up, maybe nobody can.

So what should we make of the fact that after two years of design and testing Under Armour’s Golf Footwear collection, most notably The Spieth Shoe, is finally coming to retail? Announced, and ready for pre-order are three new models (two spiked, one spikeless), which signify the company’s most significant push into the golf market to date.

Should we take this as a harbinger of bigger things to come or should we begrudgingly accept that sometimes a shoe is just a shoe?

oh yeah, shoes are cool… will be popular with the young crowd!

Unfortunately it’s prolly true. Like we don’t have enough club makers out there already, putting out 4 drivers and 4 sets of irons every year. Oh boy. Hope it’s not true

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but Spieth explicitly said when he signed that he wanted to be clothing only so he could stay with his beloved Titleist AP2 irons.. If they won’t make them for the world number one, I don’t see them starting anytime soon..

Still won’t stop Kevin Plank making the right moves to make one his top 3 athletes happy as can be. Especially since he signed a 9 figure deal. Think about it, they’ve been in the golf apparel arena for a while and it took Nike a good amount to make good clubs. And it’s taking them this long to come out with the shoes, they wanted to make sure it’s perfected and can be sold to the masses at the right time.

I hope you’re right on this. Would hate to see another club maker. It’ll take them years to get it right if they do. Took them years to even make a comfortable shoe…and still not sure if they’ve done that yet either.

All that loyalty to Titleist is gone, especially after all the trouble he had switching to AP2 716! Jordan has not been happy after he left the 714s, I’m sure he is open to a “better” iron from UA. He will probably get some obscure new head manufactured by Endo (Japan) with a shiny UA logo. It will have better feel than the 716s that he is using now. Reminds me when TW left his beloved Mizuno MP14s and switched to the EXACT same thing made by Miura and stamped Titleist. TW was happier then. It is all a minor change, shaft and grip will be exactly the same, head weight and angles will be the same, only FEEL will be better! Go Jordan. Just do it soon, before the Ryder Cup and Olympics, oh wait. This one may be a bad year to change irons. Better do it on 2017.
