2017 Golf Equipment Brand Perception Survey

2017 Golf Equipment Brand Perception Survey

BRANDS ARE NOT JUST WHAT THEY SAY THEY ARE. BRANDS ARE WHAT CONSUMERS SAY THEY ARE. – ARI JACOBY, CEO SOLVE MEDIA

I’ve used that quote before – twice actually – and I’ll probably use it again because its relevancy is never diminished.

It’s seldom fair, but the fact is that perception matters more than reality.

It’s within that context that we wanted to take a day to gauge your perception of the golf equipment brands we cover every day. Leaving little room for nuance, I’m calling it the One Word Survey.

Some of the words are unquestionably positive; language that golf companies want consumers to associate with their brands. Others words are unquestionably negative; language golf brands prefer you associate with their competitors.

The thing is, we’re not interested in how brands position themselves, we want to know what you think about the leading brands in the golf equipment market today.

Give us just a small amount of demographic information, then, for each word presented, choose the brand you most associate with that word. We’ll share the results in a few weeks.

Since a lot of golfers associate “feel” as one of the deciding factors, why not put it in? Might be a bit subjective but so are the other criteria. Either way, can’t wait to see the results.

Some of these questions needs an “all of the above” option. i.e. dishonest.

I got a lot of “none of the above” answers. It seemed a lot of the words were a little harsh or difficult to match to one or any company. I’ve seen all of these companies work for different people. I have a hard time labeling a company that is purposefully “deceitful” and still in business.

Can’t figure that if you can put ” None of the above” in your survey you could not facilitate “All of the above”.
First time ever I had a doubt about an agenda at your website.

Given that we have equal numbers of both positive and negative words, I’d love to hear what our agenda could be in leaving out All of the Above. To no small degree we want people to think and ultimately make a choice.

None of the Above was a late add. I nearly left it off as well. Its purpose was two-fold. First, I figured there would be words for which some didn’t associate with any brand. Second, it serves as an ‘other’ of sorts for those who might associate a given word with a smaller brand.

I’m confident that MGS has an agenda, and it’s close enough to what I call “real data, and more unbiased than anything similar, with nearly nothing being similar. Benevolence in an industry full of greed.”

Great survey. In 45 seconds I was able to express my disdain for PXG, the way that taylormad makes me want to vomit, and the honesty and engineering I associate with Mizuno and cobra

      Reply

That is quite a stretch on the agenda comment. This seems purely market research by MGS to better understand perception of manufacturers. What would you choose “All of the above” on if it has such a dramatic impact on your perception of the website?

An interesting survey but you could not put All of Them in an answer. It was fine to put None but all leading brands are marketing bullshit guru’s. Ever since the .830 COR came into effect on drivers, everything has been a gimmick.

I got a birthday card the other day that said something like “Kids don’t think those over 60 are old—– they think they are dead” Seems you guys think along the same lines. Your age groups after 21 are mostly separated by ten years but then you group all of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s in with those young whipper snappers in their 60’s. I would hazard a guess that you would see different responses from the different groups considering the decades covered.

I nearly forgot to add the demographic info, so I went with the SurveyMonkey default without looking too closely. We generally break out to at least 80 I think. The 18-20 group is probably unnecessary too.

Anxious to see the results! The perspective was too narrow often times several brands could have been ranked instead of being left out. Additionally consumer economic impact was not addressed in this highly priced market.

I believe that PING is the best golf brand. It consistently makes great performing clubs that last. Their marketing doesn’t involve gimmicks and exaggerated claims, it’s simply “Play your Best” which I’ve noticed PING clubs help me do that.

I’ve been a club maker since the 1970s . Over the years Mfg’s. have been kidding golfers about equipment and most golfers are like Dumbo looking for a magic feather (it’s just not there) . But if I find it I’ll let everyone know. Golfers should read the info you send out and learn.

I enjoyed the poll. You guys have made your mark exposing golf equipment through your own testing. My only criticism of this poll is it had a fair mount of negative single words for us to decide on. I found myself thinking do I believe any of the manufacturers are “deceptive”? No, I don’t believe any are deceptive perse.

if additional words such as design, beauty, improvement, promising ….etc were added to extend the poll the results would be more polarizing.

again over all I liked the poll.

I’ve used some PXG clubs in stores, though admittedly not on the course. They’re a golf club, just a higher priced one with an “interesting” owner and marketing strategy. They got an answer both positive and negative from me in the survey, and I think both responses are fairly reasonable.

I too would have preferred a 1, 2, 3 output to the poll.

Enjoyed that, I won’t comment too much as not to sway any thoughts on how I voted. but I liked the format of only being able to pick the ONE company that best associates with that word.
