First Look – 2017 PING G400 Drivers

Given that it has been nearly a year and a half since the release of the PING G Series, it’s reasonable to assume that it’s just about time for the next G. And so here you go; the PING G400 Series has landed on the USGA’s conforming clubs list.

Following the model and naming conventions established with the G30, there will be three versions of the G400. The LST is the low spin model. The SFT offers Straight Flight Technology, which means it’s designed to fight the slice. The non-suffixed G400 is the middle of the road offering for the healthiest percentage of the market.

As usual, the USGA’s photos don’t provide much in the way of detail, but there are some inferences to be drawn from the limited information provided.

G400

G400

From what we can see in the USGA photos, the most notable change in the G400 is the addition of what appears to be a tungsten weight bar. You know the story with tungsten, it’s heavy, which assuming weight savings in other parts of the driver, allows engineers to strategically position big chunks of mass where they believe it will have the most benefit.

In the case of the G400, that appears to be as far back as possible, suggesting the G400 may exceed the MOI of previous G-series drivers.

Also of note, the USGA entry suggests the G series’ Vortec cavity carries on. We don’t think it’s much of a leap to assume that Turbulators will carry on as well. What remains unknown for now is what, if any, measures PING has taken to reduce weight in the face and crown. 9° and 10.5°

Both 9° and 10.5° lofts were approved by the USGA.

G400 LST

G400LST

What I see in this photo suggests that PING might be taken a more aggressive approach to the G400 LST. While the LS Tech was the lowest spinning of the G/G30 models, we never found it to be particularly low spin with respect to the market as a whole. That may change with the G400 LST.

The photo suggests that PING might be shifting mass a bit more forward in this season’s model. Note the more forward placement of the tungsten bar as well as the more forward location of the tuning port weight. It’s reasonable to believe that the LST will be PING’s lowest CG/CGNA offering.

Also of note, the USGA has approved the G400 LST in both 8.5° and 10°. PING’s lowest loft was 9° in previous G-Series offerings, suggesting that the LST may be better adept than its predecessors at lowering launch angle and cutting spin.

G400 SFT

G400SFT

PING’s Straight Flight Technology is designed to help golfers who need it mitigate a slice. Part of how PING does that is with aggressive, heal weighted geometry and closed face angles. That appears to be true for the G400 SFT.

For the G400 SFT, PING has shifted the Tungsten weight from the center of the sole to the heel side. Adding weight to the heel does two things. First, it shifts the sweet spot towards the heel, which benefits golfers who tend to impact the ball on the heel side of center. Secondly, it increases the closure rate of the club, which makes it easier to square leading into impact, which for many, helps take the right side of the golf course out of play.

The USGA has approved the G400 SFT in 10° and 12.5° models.

More to Come

We’ll be able to share full details about the G400 Series Drivers, along with everything else in the G400 series in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

I love looking back at this thread and seeing all the hate for Ping and these G400 drivers. How did the drivers turn out? Arguably one of the best drivers ever released. Lol

Where are the pictures of the G iron replacement that are due to come out in July? I know the Ping representatives are meeting with golf shops and showing them the clubs. Someone has to have pictures, please post them here.

Those images are black & white. Both the weight and the”G” in G400 are gold in images over at GolfWRX. I switched to PING this year, including i200’s and love them all. A friend that works at a major retailer was told the new G400 hybrid will have less draw bias, which is problem for a lot of us. I’m definitely getting that. Jury is out for me on switching to the new LStec driver and fairways. What I have is working.

I’ve played until now all the PING “G” ‘s and I buy them all (I’m a golf fad)
I play in parallel the KRANK GOLF FORMULA something (5,6,or 7).
The KRANK s are superior to the PING’s in terms of distance and consistency, whatever Mr TONY COVEY or others writes on this otherwise excellent site of which I am a donator and proud to be so ,because GOLF SPY X needs to be supported fr their very good work.
But to play a KRANK driver ,fairway wood or hybrid ,you need to be an excellent golfer with a repetitive and sound swing which I am.
At age 83 I still play every two days to a 7 handicap
Keep going GOLF SPY X !
the EVNROLL putters I bought thanks to your advice are really outstanding

3 “new” drivers identical to they last 3 “new” drivers but for name graphics and colors. Weak. Disappointed. It’s a shame PXG pilfered all of the engineering talent at PING. I wander if the stole the marketing department too??? Last year, only G, so it won’t be dated. 1 cycle later a new random number assigned. I’m only surprised there aren’t more bullshit wings or “aero package” crap with a whiz bang name. Get your head out of your ass PING. Better yet get your head out of Titleist’s, Callaway’s, and TaylorMade’s asses.

You are right. The Titleist naming convention is the best. First digit is the line of club 9 for driver / fairway woods 8 for hybrid and 7 for irons. Then the last two are for the year. Ping hasn’t done that but it looks like they may be moving to that with this driver line and the i200 iron.

No doubt this driver will go 10 yards longer and will reduce lateral spread by, at least 5 meters !!!

How long will Ping treat golfers as minus 60 IQ people ?

Warrior, GIGAGOLF and others offer drivers that will be just fine for most of us- Driver are priced way to high when the companies ahs less than $ 30 per in them- OMG!

Who cares. Golf clubs aren’t a necessity anyway. Do you go on watch forums complaining that the new Rolex costs too much and keeps time just like the old one?

You are free to spend your money on all the Walmart drivers you wish…the rest of American can spend their money as they see fit as well ✌?

I like the simple evolution, will be interested in how high the hype volume is dimples to produce better air interaction for increased swing speed….means yet another round of “LONG” but if they don’t overdo that, also have they tweaked it around weight placement more but keeping it clean and simple which is part of the Ping appeal. The bottom of the club does have a bit of borrowed from different vendors design queues look but still it looks clean. the G400 crossover replacement interested in how this has evolved too.

When are they going to stop making black soled drivers? The finish wears off and then they look awful. Please stop this nonsense. Fairway woods are obviously even worse. Kudos to Srixon, best driver, best design.

What are you doing to wear the finish off the bottom of a driver? I’ve been hitting my G for 16 months and about 150 rounds and nary a scratch on the bottom… and I sole my driver at address. If you’re wearing the finish off the bottom of a driver you have bigger problems than looks. Fairway and hybrids I could see, if you play in sandy soil conditions, but a driver?
