First Look: PXG 0311X Driving Iron
It keeps the ball low and sends it far … feels buttery smooth … and looks smoking hot. – Bob Parsons

The Open Championship is often where new driving irons make their debut. 2017 proved no exception, so while another company’s driving iron-ish design became the stuff of legends over the weekend, it’s not even a little surprising to learn that PXG’s first ever driving iron was also in play last week.

Some of you may be saying, but what about the 0311XF?. While it’s true that its oversized design isn’t far removed aesthetically from most driving irons, from a playability perspective, the 0311X is most certainly something entirely different within the PXG lineup.

pxg-driving-iron-chrome

While the 0311XF, despite its so-called jacked lofts, is designed to launch high, the 0311X is designed to do the opposite. In fact, the key performance attributes are of the 0311X are low launch and low spin.

As you might expect from a club making its debut at the Open, the 0311X is a wind-cheater, it’s made to fly low, and presumably, roll like a sombitch.

That’s perhaps surprising given that the 0311X’s features a wide sole often associated with high launch designs, but that’s but one of the notable design considerations. To bring the ball flight down, PXG’s latest offering is engineered with minimal offset and a CG that’s positioned closer the shaft axis.

According to PXG, that creates less dynamic loft through impact, which means a lower, more penetrating ball flight.

Like all PXG irons, the 0311X Driving Iron features an ultra-thin face supported by PXG’s TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) inside its forged body.

Retail Reality

Driving irons aren’t generally in high demand at retail, and given PXG’s price point along with the reality that most average golfers need higher launch and benefit from a bit more offset, we’re talking about a niche within a niche within a niche (maybe inside another niche), but the new offering confirms PXG remains committed to building a full catalog of clubs to fit everyone from PGA Tour Professionals to the Super Game-Improvement crowd.

Noting that the 0311X is the first PXG iron product to bear the standalone X designation, it should be interesting to see what comes next – although I’m told it’s likely going to be a while before we see a new generation of irons from PXG.

I went to a fitting for the irons 0311XF. I tried every one of their shafts and found nothing spectacular. My friend had a premium shaft, and I hit his clubs great.. Much better than my Callaway Big Berthas. While I was at the fitting, I hit a 4 driving iron with a stiff graphite shaft and hit it great. I am almost 80 and I usually hit senior shafts. Unfortunately I really have no use for this club. The fitter said he thinks they put more plastic filler in these heads.

You would think that if you are paying $375 for a club, you might as well get the best shaft available. I think PXG is missing the boat by not having demo premium shafts. They are doing their customers a disservice. This was a PXG master fitter. A retailer, who builds their own clubs, have all shafts available.

      Just my two cents.

I look at these reviews like I look at BMW 320i reviews in Car & Driver. I won’t buy one but fun to read. I would like to see more reviews like Top Flite Gamer Tour vs. NXT tour…..

Super priced clubs seem to do OK in the Asian market. But that’s the Asian market and not the US market. I can’t imagine PXG having more than a niche marketplace because they’ll won’t be able so show any discernible difference in performance over much less expensive clubs. Finish might be great but it’s performance that counts. And all those screw heads seem screwy.

From my understanding the US is one of there largest markets, mostly the east and west coasts. I live near Boston and there are 9 club fitters and/or stores within 30 minutes of me that sell and fit for PXG. The PXG van even comes to my club and has a permanent home spot at a club about 30 minutes away. The fitter I tried clubs with stated he sold over 600k in clubs with them in the last 6 months and that was only 1 fitter out of 9 in the area and was located at a club. So I think pxg is doing fairly well even with their 1.5-2 times price tag. Although I did try the titleist tmb and they are 2k a set verse 2,400 for the pxg with no upgrade charge on the pxg’s for my Nippon modus tour 120 shafts verse 20 a club for titleist and no upcharge from pxg for my grips mc4 vers 6 a club from titleist. So titleist tmb are really 2,200 verse 2,400 for pxg.

I just received my PXG 0311P irons and wedges (5 through PW, 50, 54, 58) with NS Modus Tour 105 shafts. I purchased them through the PXG for Heroes program where MIlitary Active Duty or retired, and First Responders can purchase PXG Gen1 irons, Gen2 SGI irons, drivers, fairways, hybrids, wedges and putters at ridiculously low prices. Out the door with taxes and shipping I paid $1226.00 for the set. That was much cheaper than what I was looking at with the Titleist AP3s and PING i210 with the same set make-up and shafts.

Am I the only one who thinks that PXG looks like someone was tinkering around in their garage and thought “what can I use these grub screws for, I’ve got loads of them just lying around . I know I will put them in that old set of clubs .Who knows someone with more money than sense will buy them .Old clubs and grub screws gone, job done”
Just my personal take on the origins of PXG.

Titleist 712U … 2 iron. Works for me.
Very forgiving. Around $120 used on FleaBay. Long – straight. Can hit it high or low. Been gaming it for 2 years on all short par 4’s ( 400 yards or less ).

PxG may be a great club but not good enough to justify nearly triple the cost….its a hollow forged, polymer filled golf club all the wealthy 20 handicapers will buy. Save your money and buy a good MP forging

300 bucks for a fairway finder works for me , I figure if I replace my original fli hi , that I’ve had for years , the price shouldn’t be an issue if I keep it as long. Regardless I really like the look and look forward to trying it . I hope it hits some high ball speed stingers !

There might be a bigger market than described. Lots of golfers are too wild with a 44 or longer inch shaft. Here is a 40 inch club that might get me 250 or 270 yards with many more fairways. $350 is not too much for a club I would use to drive half the holes. Thanks. I will look up a dealer in the near future. Or I can wait til the dead of winter and look on Ebay or all the used club sellers. (Being in San Diego, probably a few dealers here. ) Thanks for MGS.

Well this one is for the truly rich gear heads out there with nothing else to do with their money. I sort of get why a Driver costs what it does, but only sort of. But this club…..

If you are among the legions of us who wouldn’t consider buying PXG irons anyway, this is largely a non event.

So let me get this right. The universe of players that would game PXG irons to begin with is extremely small. The universe of players that would game a driving iron to begin with is also extremely small.

So it would follow that the intersection of these two extremely small universes would most likely be infinitesimally small.

Doesn’t sound like there will be much of a market for this club.

However, kind of cool that we know about it anyway.

I saw a guy once sitting in traffic lights in his badly smoking ’78 truck. Next to him he had a brand new E-class MB. I heard him yelling: it’s stupid to pay that much for a car!! It’s the driver, not the car… ;-)

No way I would spend 500$ for a driver much less 350$ for a putter. Way to many great clubs out there that are reasonably priced. They don’t get the credit deserved just because it’s not in demand or some tester didn’t like the way it sounded. JMO

Been said over and over take the price out of picture, as all hobbies/sports have high end equipment.
Does it perform? Yes. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with with PXG’s offerings. Irons/wedges hands down awesome (coming from a player who has gamed mizzy’s MP line for past 12 years). Wasn’t too crazy about first run of PXG drivers, but “x” driver is a beast.
So when you look down at your Rolex, remember it tells the same time as a Timex. Everyone has their passions, golf and cars being mine. I’ll spend and be happy. Would hate to hear what is said if you bought a 009 Scotty. Guess I would be crucified for loving what’s in my bag, having no regrets.

Unfortunately most golfers won’t be able to swing it. I believe it’s a product line designed for sponsorship and the few 1% that can afford 2500$ for a set. Would like to hit them but are they what’s best for my swing maybe a set of shelf clubs would be better. Not about a name but about the game.

It’s not unfortunate but I get where you are coming from. The general public wouldn’t see any benefit from those clubs and to be honest, they wouldn’t see any difference between 5 year old irons and brand new ones. It’s a cool luxury for those who can afford it or genuinely need top of the line performance. But in all honesty, it’s a Ferrari when 99.9% of players would be fine with a used Nissan Maxima. Robert W. Boyce you are right though, getting fitted is the most important.
