Callaway adds Raw Option to MD4 Wedge Lineup

Here’s a little something to hold you over while you’re waiting for the next XR or the next Apex, or the next whatever it is you’re waiting for from Callaway Golf.

Queue up some ODB because the company has just announced a new Raw finish option for its MD4 wedge lineup, which technically is more of a lack of finish option. I digress.

We’re not going to going to dig into the features too deeply, but if you need a refresher, we’ve got you covered. What you need to know is that the new raw finish brings with it all the requisite MD4 goodness. You’ve got loft-specific grooves (with micro-grooves), progressive CG locations, and the extra Nip-It groove near the leading edge.

What is new, different, and potentially exciting, is the addition of a new X Grind to the lineup. Available in 54, 56, 58, and 60-degree lofts, the X Grind is described as “a narrow, high-bounce (12°), crescent sole design, with the low point near the front.” It’s well-suited for moderate to steep attack angles and soft turf.

MD4 Raw Loft Offerings

With the addition of the X-Grind, the raw wedge will be available in 15 different loft-bounce combinations. While that’s not nearly as many as Callaway offers in Satin or Black, it should be more than enough to meet the needs of typical golfers – most of whom don’t bother to get fitted for wedges anyway.

You’re throwing shots away, people.

The MD4 is available in the following Loft/Grind combinations:

  • S-Grind: 50°, 52°, 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°
  • C-Grind: 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°, 62°
  • X-Grind: 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°

The raw finish should appeal to golfers who like a bit of the tour vibe to their golf bags. It can be expected wear and rust more quickly than Satin, QPQ, DBM, or basically any other finish on the market, but it brings with it the glare-free look that tour players love.

And while perhaps it’s not perhaps it’s not validation in the conventional sense, 5 times Sergio Garcia’s ball shimmy shimmy ya’d and spun into the pond in front of the 15th green at Augusta. Between his MD4 wedge and his Chrome Soft X ball, he made an argument that Callaway’s gear can produce prodigious amounts of spin. Too much for Sergio in that situation, but no doubt it raised some eyebrows for the spin-challenged among us.

The release comes at the start of a golf season in which Callaway hopes to overtake Cleveland for the #2 spot (retail dollars) in the wedge category. The MD4 has been well-received and adding a few more options to the mix certainly won’t hurt the momentum.

All 4 pictures show only the club bottom. While grind is good, grooves and look at address are also important. How about a variety of shots?

Can someone explain to me with math why Vokey charges $50 more for a raw finish?

I’m sorry but those raw wedges appear a little rough. I too dislike shiny wedges but I think they could have made them look better. I know I am harsh on finishes but this is a premium product and I would expect a premium raw ground finish. The inconsistency and depth of some of the grinding marks is almost off-putting.

I love oil-can and rusting finishes. My favorite finish of all time was the RTG finish on the CG12. That thing rusted like a champ and would create an incredible amount of spin if you hadn’t used it in a while due to the rust build up.

I’d be really happy if this meant that a raw PM grind is on the way.

a glare free look that tour players love! well if that don’t beat all! A wedge that has so much spin Sergio could not control it!! Booya!!! Ha! Ha!…………O.K. `guys it’s a given that these are very good wedges but the 149.00 dollars for these utility clubs will keep me and many other golfers from dropping one in the bag. On the flip side, thanks for the update.

$149.99 is the price for the MD4’s even with a finish, and considering how much up-charge there is from other companies for raw (Titleist), these are really well priced. I’ll definitely be picking some up!

Kudos to Callaway for making raw wedges the same price as their other wedges (looking at you Titleist) and for making them available for lefties (looking at you Cleveland and Wilson).
