Callaway Launches European Market Exclusive XR Speed Driver and Fairway Woods

Regional products have always been a thing in golf equipment. There’s a small but noisy chunk of golfers who go loco for Japanese equipment, extolling the virtues of their craftsmanship, often without being able to quantify any performance benefits. Seve used to use different brands of irons depending on what continent he was playing on, and Henrik Stenson has used a set of Japanese Callaway Legacy Black irons for as long as we can remember.

In the modern world, product is generally split geographically between Japan and Asia as one market and the rest of the world as the other market. Very rarely – Mizuno being a notable exception – does Europe (Africa and the Middle East as well if we’re splitting hairs) get exclusive product. Yep, unfortunately, we got the Jetspeed too…

xr-sitewide

So why is the European Market getting a new equipment line that the USA isn’t?

Two words: Price point.

Epic was an unprecedented success for Callaway. Rogue is looking like a strong follow-up, and the one thing they have in common is they are bloody expensive. In 2017, 70% of all the drivers sold in Europe over £400 were manufactured by Callaway. But the reality is around 70% of all drivers sold were well under that threshold. That’s a lot of sales opportunities missed.

The XR16 was a tremendous success for Callaway, but despite having two major victories to its credit, it wasn’t replaced…at least not on the expected schedule. The new XR speed line is the replacement. Callaway is claiming that the new XR is the best driver on the market without jailbreak. Of course, it is.

So what has the XR Speed got under the hood? Well, it hasn’t got Jailbreak. The biggest tech innovation in Callaway arsenal was the first to be cut. Callaway is saying ball speeds are 1-1.15mph lower than the Rogue and Epic. Yet, according to Callaway, that still makes the XR Speed faster than every other driver on the market. The MGS Most Wanted driver test might have something different to say.

xr-crown

What it does have is the X Face VFT from the Rogue, which is said to be lighter, thinner, and more flexible than driver faces that have come before it; a combination designed to produce more ball speed across the face. It has has a Triaxial carbon crown, 45% lighter than the one used on the XR16, helping lower the CG for higher MOI. It has the Speed Step Crown for improved aerodynamics. And finally the adjustable hosel. Callaway’s adjustable hosel is still one of the most versatile out there, offering 8 different loft and face angle options. It comes with what’s advertised as a premium Project X Hzrdus graphite shaft, but in reality, it’s a repainted HZRDUS T800, which you may remember from the Epic. Shaft upgrades are offered, however.

Designed to be a lightly draw biased and slightly higher spinning than Rogue, the XR Speed is positioned to hit that sweet spot for the everyman golfer. It’s sole plate design and blue color scheme may even evoke some nostalgic memories of the Callaway SteelHead Plus and Hawkeye woods.

Matching fairway woods are also available. Sharing the same face profile and an overall shape that goes back to the Diablo Edge Tour, the fairway also features the Hawkeye sole which should make it forgiving off the deck. A Hyper Speed Cup face is the source of the clubs power, while Speed steps again are there to improve aerodynamics.

xr-speed-fw

We’re sure these clubs will perform decently, but it would be a hard decision to pick an XR Speed over pretty much any other driver on the market. TaylorMade may launch an M3 and an M4 but they launch them at the same time and their marketing never tries to tell you that one is superior over the other, just that one is more adjustable. Here Callaway is saying that their other driver is noticeably better. The keen price point is only reason for a golfer to buy an XR Speed. Is that enough?

Available March 8th in 9°, 10.5° and 13.5° HT options at an rrp of £339. The fairway woods are available in 3, 4, 5, and 7 at an RRP of £229.

I find it odd that everyone with a opinion who don’t own a Callaway find the need to rip them about the cost or distance yet the other club makers bring out new drives every year with the same price point and stats . All the high end club makers make a good product and not one of them force you buy a new one every year..

Despite all the offerings, I have been waiting for a new 440cc driver from Callaway here in the states. If you follow my consumer like mannerisms I have owned an x2 hot 440, an XR 440 and currently I game an XR16 440. To date Epic and Rogue are not offered in a 440CC,
so is there room for another offering from Callaway or is my 2 year old driver going to get traded for a TM?
Good article but no mention of what size heads will be available.
      Sincerely,
      Bloody US Consumer

I don’t get what people are all fired up about. It’s a European product, not in US at a price point price point.

I had a Callaway XR Steelhead 5-wood that was the easiest swinging best club I have ever used from the fairway. At 62yrs old I have lost some swing speed through the years & that little club put some zip in my step. Then I thought the Rogue 4-wood would give me 10-15 more yards….mistake….bought it & traded it back in after 6 rounds for another Steelhead XR 4+ wood that is the bomb. Asked Callaway 18mo. ago if they would ever create an XR Steelhead Driver and they said emphatically, NO. I see they were holding back…..! Now waiting to order one from the English contingent & test it here in the USA where their HQ is at & where we should have 1st rights to all of their products….just saying……?

Drivers are the new P.T. Barnum circus act. The PGA and RNA restrictions have for all intensive purposes capped the potential distances to be gained. They can only repackage and rename tweeking where weight is to improve spin but they really can’t make them longer. The gains over the last 5 years are negligible.

Let me guess…… it’s higher, longer, straighter and with more penetrating without Vaseline ball flight.

Boy anyone who says companies like taylormade release product every 6 months really has to look at callaway, for the past 3 years they are averaging 6 new drivers per year- yes you read that right.

Now as far as this driver is concerned looks like the same steelhead/ diablo crap found in the back corner of golf shops collecting dust. The only unique difference is this adjustable hozel , B.F.D.

If this thing is half as good as my Steelhead XR 3 Wood, it deserves more than a cursory glance. It could be that I just got a good one, or that the Mitsu Tensei is a great shaft for Seniors. Either way, it is by far the best 3 wood I have ever owned. No I am not a shill. It is the only Callaway club in my bag. Perhaps there is more to this driver than meets the eye.

Gee I wondered when they would do this. Sure glad I never got caught up in all the Calloway b.s. Will stick with my G25 woods and mizuno irons. Can’t believe they are doing this to their customers again and again.

The “new off the shelf” prices astound me. Here in Japan I can get the last model and sometimes the new model from a second hand store for less than half the new price, or even less!! The equipment may be a little better but consistent practice/ play and lessons would be more effective to the end result.

There must be something added into the water in Carlsbad, Ca. !!!!
So now the new marketing hype is ” only 1.5 mph slower than …..”

Ever wonder why the number of golfers has decreased over the past decade ???? Even the dullards amongst us same smell BS.

The reason that Europeans have not embraced the impulsiveness of their American counterparts is that P.T. Barnum was an American revolutionary.

I might think this is designed to compete with Benross clubs in the UK and Europe. Benross is a UK club company who offers their top of the line driver for 199 pounds ($281.00 USD). All the reviews I have ever seen of Benross clubs rates them as excellent and a great value for the money. Unfortunately, they are not available in the States yet.

I am also disappointed that I have not seen any golf equipment in Costco so far this season. They have had Callaway clubs, bags, balls, and gloves in the past and i always liked the balls and gloves. Maybe they should bring Benross to the States.

more callaway b.s. to sell a new club, that no one needs or really wants. There are always plenty of fools that think their puny drives and lousy scores will get better by buying a new club or clubs. tell them to spend the money on lessons and practice and they will be rewarded faster and better.

I also have the epic jailbreak driver I to wanted more club head speed so about two weeks ago I went To my pro and he gave me some drills to increase my speed so I went to the range and I had an idea I removed the weight in my epicdriver and guess what I’m driving the ball further straighter and more carry and I saved 500 dollars on a new driver

I just started playing again last year after taking nearly 2 decades off. Clearly I would not be considered an average golfer since there is no way I would spend upwards of $400 for one club.

Too bad the big OEMs don’t have alternatives for us budget conscious players in the US. But money talks.

For what its worth, I thought I was going to get an Epic SZ fairway. Picked up the XR16 pro and hit it almost Identical, so I couldn’t justify spending the extra $$ for same results. How’s that for non-biased testing! So, you never know!

Most probably required because the Rogue sells for $610 in the UK, versus $499 in the USA.

What’s the justification for us paying so much more than the US, Both are imported from China?

Maybe VAT vs State Sales Tax?

Sorry, but not impressed with Jailbreak or the XR in general. I fit Callaway and feel the Fusion driver has the highest forgiveness stats. With Jailbreak, off center hits squirrel left & right. XR just didn’t have the punch of competitor models.
