ANNOUNCEMENT: 2018 Most Wanted Testing

ANNOUNCEMENT: 2018 Most Wanted Testing

We are independent, unbiased and always put you the #ConsumerFirst. Our job is your game. Our mission is to inform and protect you the golf consumer.

That being said, the road to finding the best performing golf equipment every year for consumers is a difficult one. We use a science based testing system and a proprietary data algorithm to help solve this complex problem for golfers all over the world. This year we will collect over 50,000 swings and 1,000,000 data points. These tests will be seen and help over 7 Million golfers in 2018 make more informed buying decisions. We test equipment head-to-head so you will know how the clubs perform best for you before you buy.

The majority of the golf equipment manufacturers support our unbiased testing along with other testing done by other golf media outlets. However, there is the occasion where a company declines to participate. The companies that declined to participate in this year’s test have done a great job marketing their products and often have the most to lose by participating in independent testing. So, while we understand they may decline based on their individual business interests, our only interest is you, the consumer.

That means we have to test these products even when manufacturers decline to participate voluntarily.

Who Is In & Who Is Out

Today, we ask for your help. And for that help, everything you give to us will be given right back to you (more on that below). Below is a list of all the companies that are supporting unbiased testing for 2018.  The companies who chose not to support our testing are also listed.

I always said Taylormade and Callaway were in love with themselves. Their failure to allow their products to be tested just shows they think they are better than everyone else. They Keep putting out new clubs every couple of months. Epic , Rouge, M 1, M2 ,M3 ,M4 and the list keeps coming. Was always a Callaway guy all my life so now? I went out and bought the New Ping G400 Irons and driver and absolutely love them !!!!!

I’m glad you like your new Ping products. I guess you’re not aware Ping also brings out a new driver, hybrids, Irons and wedges just like TM and Callaway , Cobra, Titliest do every year. Last time I check Ping products don’t come any cheaper and maybe a little more then others.

PXG not being in is not a big deal since they are a niche company targeting high-income golfers. Taylormade and Callaway are only concerned with each other, besides, their clubs always get reviewed by other sources anyways, not necessarily unbiased.

Maybe you should just compare their models from last year and ignore the new stuff if they don’t want to be included.

It’s been said, and needs to be reiterated: why are we rewarding Callaway and Taylormade by buying their clubs? If they decline, then they’re left out! I donate every year, and this year I’m commenting! In the past, we haven’t tested Tour Edge because they’ve declined. Callaway and TM are abusing their popularity to not contribute, but still make money! Btw, glad to see Tour Edge came around, must have felt the pain. Let’s send a message, not our money.

I guess that because they ARE (arguably) the two biggest OEMs, not having them in will dilute the quality of the testing that MGS does. And it might affect the reader base if they aren’t included.

      DB

Or at least source some used clubs from the bargain bins at Edwin Watts. No sense in rewarding TM and Cally with the purchase of new clubs. The trade-in clubs have already provided profits to those two companies, so buying used will only reward the shop you purchase them from.

Those that declined have spent the most money telling you what you should think about their brands, no real surprise they would not rush to allow someone else to control that information

What I don’t understand is that they know MGS is going to test them anyway (at least Cally and TM), so why risk the negative PR of declining to participate?

For PXG it’s actually really smart not to participate. Their products cost so much that they know MGS won’t shell out the $$ to buy them at market. They will then be able to continue to make claims that they are actually better b/c there won’t be any objective data out there saying otherwise.

But not participating does tell the consumer one very important thing: they are clearly not confident enough in their own product to live up to their claims in unbiased testing. That’s all you need to know.

I understand why Callaway/TW didn`t participate, as my experience with their product quality and durability has been poor. First, many of their irons have had quality issues and once the warranty period is up then its too bad even though their product shows that line is defective. I had TWs irons with gel inserts and they fell apart over time. The new Callaway drivers with the rods are also having issues with displacement. Now I have a Ping g30 driver on which the hosel cracked after 3 years and Ping replaced it with a completely new driver with an improved hosel. As a consumer, I will not be buying any clubs from TW or Callaway as it shows me they are afraid of being shown as producing an inferior product. As for PXG, that is the biggest hype since Gary Players Irons in the 80s. Parsons is probably trembling in his shoes hoping you dont test his clubs and let everone know what overpriced clubs he is selling.

I see M’s and Epics and G’s daily, I’ve got one regular with a CHS of 120’ish, he’s busted the face into the crown of his M 3w for the 3’rd time. Replacement process has been so friendly for him (not from me/us) is only reason I believe he’s stayed with it. We sent an Adams back…. to…. well, TM, it was a 2014(?) or ’13 nearly never hit hybrid that the ferule failed on. They sent back the same length loft lie grip shaft in whatever their newest M hybrid was.

I still don’t care if their rep does or doesn’t stop by. If we sell 20 sets a year, of all manufacturers combined, we make…. friends with the customer? Seriously.

Epic came in brand new in October, I got to see the jail break tech after six tee shots. The crown, in its entirety, flew off. Wasn’t impressed, but what do I know about those rods?

The two companies who stand out as far as their reps going above and beyond for our customers are Mizuno and Tour Edge. TE rep is genuinely one of the most legit I’ve met. Mizzy has some characters in this region.

Cobra…. well, PXG might be arrogant, but my impression of arrogant goes Cobra Titleist PXG. Only with Titleist….they’re arrogant and they tell you upfront and are what they are…. quality. Lol.

I will add that unless you are at least a single digit handicap it is doubtful that the club is not going to make much difference (Titliest vs Taylormade etc). There is no valid test to help someone who seldom hits the center of the clubface.

I can do my own testing. Unless you swing like me same speed and same tempo your test will not help. Not much different in heads. Get the correct shaft for you in whichever club head you choose.

This is exactly why we have 35 golfers participate. All with different swing speeds, tempos, angle of attacks, face impacts, etc. This way we can help break down a data set that represents your swing.

I know the heads don’t all look the same. But they all will perform the same providing you have the total weight and swing weight the same, lie, etc.

I hit them. I am also convinced we groove a swing according to the driver we are used to hitting. No test is going to get me off the ping 400 lst.

Been a big fan of your most wanted testing and I’m very interested in buying a Toulon putter (customizing a Memphis model). I see Callaway isn’t participating in your tests and you don’t have them listed on getting them to test.
I’m impressed by their designs and heard they have zero skid on ball rolls. Would love to see how they compare to Evnroll and Ping’s TR Face technology with regards to distance control on mishits.

I have 2 Evnroll models and they are incredible. Never putted with a Ping with TR so I can’t justify their distance control but have read and seen it’s terrific

Toulon putters are very expensive and high end quality but so are Scotty Cameron’s and they don’t outperform Evnroll nor Ping with TR so I need some testing to see how they rank.

If anyone has a Toulon would like to hear from you. Would love to see mygolfspy add them to your most wanted testing (Memphis for most wanted Mallet) would be awesome

      Thanks

Please remind us, every test, the companies who have not donated clubs for testing.

Do relevant decision-makers in these arrogant companies know how many subscribers you have, world-wide. Your influence is even greater. If other members are like me, they share relevant reports with friends when required.
I noted that Callaway and Taylor Made feature significantly in 2017 Editor Choices as did the PXG hybrid.Certainly proof of unbiased opinions.
Taylor Made has new owners, now. I cannot believe you guys who test so well are unable to persuade these companies to get on board. Share these comments with them.
And to help you, even though I currently use Taylor Made golf balls (and before that, the Callaway Chrome Soft), I will not use their balls until they get on board. Will others get on board to exercise consumer power?

I understand why MGS still needs to include them in the tests as they are trying to best-inform the golfing consumer of his/her choices, but as a consumer why would you be willing to purchase products from a company that doesn’t want their products to be compared to others?

For now I won’t be pulling my Callaway 5-wood or my TM gap wedge from my bag, but as others have posted I won’t be purchasing anything new from either company.

Dicks Sporting Goods acquired this and all the other priveate label brand rights as part of the $4m “intellectual property” purchase from Sports Authority after the bankruptcy auction. I see Dallas Golf has some inventory of the brand but that makes sense because they were the ones who handled all of the warranty claims and replacements for Sports Authority. Most Pro shops only carry Taylormade, Callaway Ping and Mizuno so to go around paying to demo clubs on trackmans can be an expensive search for the right club. Atleast with MGS it narrows the parameters a bit. I based my new irons , Adams CMBs a few years ago on reading their review.

I donated, but I also have an idea if you don’t get the amount you need. If it comes up on a test, let’s say the driver test, and you are missing the M4 Draw. Put up a post stating that unless donations are received you won’t be able to add the M4 Draw to the list of drivers in the test. Knowing exactly what they are donating for helps people donate. That’s why this original post is excellent, but I think doing it on a micro level will help as well. Thanks again for everything you guys do and hopefully it won’t come to that.

Really getting old the griping about product cycles, I have family and friend picking up golf for the first time. They ask me what clubs to checkout. Should I tell them TM or Callaway has great clubs that update every two years and you will have to wait another year for new clubs to come out or i can say they have new clubs coming out every 10 to 12 months with new stuff in between model years. New cars come out every year and sometimes sooner, new tools all the time, new whatever you like to do is always coming out quicker than a two year cycle.
Is Callaway or TM telling you to buy every new club that comes out, No. Just remember hopefully new golfers are starting out and just might want the newest and best new Clubs out.
Thank you for the testing it helps me tell new golfers clubs to try and even recommend.

They don’t need testing to show their results. Tour players want them in their bag. That’s enough proof their products are good. If anyone uses testing to make a decision for THEIR club, then you’re doing it wrong. You should test the clubs yourself and see what you like.

You shouldn’t use off the rack either… get fit and custom order them straight from the company. Those tests don’t give you YOUR numbers. Just because one thing works for someone doesn’t mean it will you. The worst club in this bunch could be the best for you. Too reliant on a testing. I have a shop I can go hit all the major brands. Buying golf clubs should be a big deal if you really care. If you have to drive an hour, then do it. I drive 45 minutes because the place I go fits me well, is unbiased in my fitting and will let me try anything I want for free before the fitting. I just pay for the range balls.

They are tired of testers disproving their “new technology”. Watch YouTube and you can see the same thing happening. Some club testers are being given the clubs to test and some are not. Seems the ones who praise Taylormade are being given clubs to test. And those who don’t always praise Taylormade are not being given clubs to test.

I am TM Guy, mainly because of the people that I have meet over the years. I also test all the equipment and write reviews for a large net store. Pretty much Everyone makes a good club. Some will look better, feel better and or produce better results than others. The key is to find one that does it all for you. Hard to do. The 3 OEM’s on the right side spend a ton of money on Marketing, plus their products have produced great numbers in the past. It’s hard to improve every year, but the smart shopper figures out when this happens, though it does not happen very often and buys then. The OEM’s spend a ton of money to make a great product better with the same limitations every single year…marketing and minor break through’s make new clubs into winners. Maybe these three OEM’s on the right, have no real breakthrough‘s this year.

I to support Consumer Reports I love the magazine I refer to a constantly and use it as a guide for major purchases unfortunately Consumer Reports the vibe in the feel is entirely different at times compared to my golf spy as much as we hear over and over again that they have the consumers best interest I cannot help but think that occasional emotion slips into the decision making and banter of product reviews.

That something is never found in consumer reports in my opinion
