First Look: Cobra King Forged CB-MB Irons

Forged distance irons may be all the rage as we slide toward the end of 2018, but Cobra’s latest iron release sings a slightly different and darker tune. Created in tandem with Rickie Fowler, Cobra tags the King CB/MB as an integrated combo set, based on tour validated technologies which result in a “buttery soft feel and unrivaled precision.”

When distance isn’t the primary focus, aesthetics and workability take center stage.

Effectively, Cobra pairs cavity back long irons (3-6) with traditional muscle-back shaped scoring irons (7-PW). The slightly revamped muscle-cavity boosts forgiveness while maintaining sufficient trajectory control on long irons while the traditionally blade-shaded scoring irons place a premium on distance control and shot-shaping. Both the CB and MB irons undergo a 5-step forging process, the result of which is a more refined grain structure and signature feel.

Non-Japanese based OEM’s generally struggle to successfully market irons based on a tangible forged feel although Cobra does have a solid resume of such offerings (remember the S3 Pro MBs) and Fowler’s seal of approval.

In addition to the sleek black on black on black aesthetic, Rickie’s influence is most visible in the addition of two tungsten weights, placed in the toe and center of each club. The purpose is to fine-tune CG (center of gravity) in each iron to maximize forgiveness, feel and trajectory.

From a manufacturing standpoint, each head features machined faces and CNC milled grooves – the same grooves which are found in Cobra’s current generation of wedges. The DBM (Diamondized Black Metal) finish is purportedly Cobra’s most durable, and although all finishes will show wear over time, it certainly should fare better than a standard PVD finish.

Additionally, this is the first set of Cobra irons to feature Golf Pride Tour Velvet COBRA CONNECT grips which work in conjunction with the Arccos Caddie app to allow players access to the Arccos stat-tracking platform.

OPTIONS-PRICING-AVAILABILITY

The stock 7-piece set (4-6 CB and 7-P MB) carries an MSRP of $1099 and comes with a PVD black finish KBS S-Taper shaft in regular or stiff flex. A matching 2-iron, 3-iron and gap wedge are also available.

Right-handed players can opt for a full set of either the CB or MB irons and left-handed players can select either a full set of CB irons or the stock flow set with muscle-back short irons. Creating molds for forged irons isn’t a cheap endeavor. As such this set isn’t likely to sell in volume and therefore left-handed players limited access to the MB helps to mitigate the cost to procure a full set of MB molds for right-handed players.

The King Forged CB-MB is a nod to what matters most to better players – consistent performance, tight dispersion, and sticky distance control. It’s an offering for which Cobra faithful have been eagerly anticipating and now that it’s here, we will see if the inspired by Rickie tagline is enough to move the needle in any appreciable manner.

Are they the same size as the King Combo?
Gorgeous irons, never seen a set in anyone’s bag, and rightfully so, I don’t know anyone will the balls to play them.
Wish they were more forged Tec size

From the pics they look to be the same shape and size as the prior model, but with an additional tungsten weight and a less orangy paint job, which aesthetically is great. I own the prior model in 6-pw (Mb) and combo it with king forged tec black in 4-5 irons, and have the lofts tweaked for gapping. They are stunning in person and the feel matches the look, when you’re on they are an absolute joy. But as you would expect when you are off they dont offer you much help… I mean theyre still a blade so set your expectations accordingly and you will absolutely love them.

Chris – how does the turf interaction differ for you between the Forged Tec and the CBs? I’m looking to build a set now and trying to decide between a full set of the forged tecs and a blend of the forged tecs & CBs (not MB), but if there are major differences I probably wouldn’t bother with the blend. I also plan to test this out myself but curious for your thoughts.

While I am not the target market (handicap) for these, they look fantastic. Cobra makes an under appreciated iron, and does so in every category.

The CB’s are pretty much still the same head shape as the last generation of these, the fly z+, and the amp forged. Tungsten is just in a different spot now. I grabbed a set of fly z+ for 200 bucks a couple of months ago. One of the best deals I’ve ever found. Hopefully the prices come down on the last generation of these guys and I can score another deal.

Yup, I will take 2 sets of these please! I started to sweat thinking once i wore my current set of these out i was going to be SOL. Though even after A LOT of shots with my current set the DBM is showing minimal signs of wear. Best feeling, looking and performing club out IMO. If you dont like the colors on the back some stuff called Goof-Off will take all the paint off and doesnt hurt the DBM finish one bit. Then you are left with a flat black blade. They look REAL good once you do that.

What goes around comes around. In this case the comebackers are the Wilson Progressive and Mizuno Grad irons. Yes there’s a little Ti in these but I suspect that, for the single digit golfers to whom these will be marketed, the difference is slight.

Cobra’s been doing the black finish correctly from day 1! I play clubs that also have the DBM (almost a pencil graphite dark grey) finish and it is far superior to the PVD garbage that other OEM’s have tried. After 1 year of very regular play, the finish has only dulled to a slightly lighter shade rather than worn completely. Additionally, the previous gen version of this club was a stunner in all facets. I had a chance to use CB version when fitting for my Maltby DBM’s as they were similar in profile, look, loft, etc. Superb feel, surprisingly forgiving given their small player’s profile and very workable. If money were no object, this would be my set without question.

Damn these are sweet looking! Love the all black and only orange accent in the initials. Well done Cobra, if only I had the game… And money to play these. Between Srixon, Mizuno, Hogan and Cobra, there’s some seriously sexy and likely awesome performing irons this cycle

Looks more or less like the last gen King combo set with the addition of tungsten inserted into the sole of the club and black shafts. Not a bad thing at all. I’ve been clamoring for a set ever since the last release, but this one is arguably better because it uses far less of the OSU orange. On my short list of irons to try especially with S-taper shafts and a more reasonable price point.

I think they look great, not over the top, and wont look dated the following season. I like that they have the blended set which is one thing I LOVE about my Mizuno MP-18’s with MP-18SC’s. I’ve always coveted a set of Cobra Irons so this may have to be that second set I want to build.

I think the King Pro MB is the most badass looking set of clubs out there, but you’ve got to be spot on to use them. So I’m glad they’ve come out with this updated combo/flow set of irons.
Still great looking but with the additional tungsten weights (which made my Adams CMBs great) and cavitiy help in the 6 and above I think they’ve really stepped it up in the Players Club category. Well done Cobra!!
