Titleist to Release Yellow Pro V1 and Pro V1x Balls in 2019

Over the weekend we heard from sources that Titleist Sales Reps have started sharing information with their accounts about the next iteration of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls.

While we haven’t been told anything specific about the performance advantages (or even differences) over the current model, the potentially exciting news – insomuch as pigment can be exciting – is that the upcoming version will be offered in yellow.

It’s about time.

Currently, colored balls, a term which covers anything other than standard white, account for a bit less than 20% of the market. It’s reasonable to expect that number will climb a bit when the #1 Ball in Golf hits shelves in yellow.

While it seems unlikely that a yellow Pro V1 will boost Titleist’s market share in any significant way, I suppose it’s at least possible that there are some golfers whose absolute preference for yellow tour balls has kept the available-in-white-only Pro V1 out of their bag. It’s also possible that yellow might cause golfers who have moved on to other brands to take a fresh look.  If nothing else, yellow a nice option to have, I suppose.

I’d be remiss to point out that Titleist has lagged a bit behind with respect to adding a splash of color to its flagship golf ball. Srixon has offered yellow for years, Callaway offers yellow variants of the Chrome Soft, the same is true for the Bridgestone’s Tour B. Earlier this year, Dean Snell began offering the MTB in yellow.

For Titleist, making a yellow Pro V1 has been a  bit of a chemistry problem. With thermoplastic urethane (the cover material used by most of the above), adding pigment isn’t particularly difficult. Coloring the thermoset cast urethane material that Titleist uses isn’t as simple dripping some yellow dye into the mix. It takes a bit of work, but the company apparently found a formulation it liked with the AVX, and now it’s trickling yellow up the line into the Pro V1 franchise.

Chemistry aside, it’s fair to acknowledge that while Pro V1(x) usage has ticked up slightly of late, the company is feeling pressure at retail, particularly from Callaway’s Chrome Soft, which is available in both yellow and Truvis colorways. The addition of yellow to the lineup, like AVX and Tour Soft may be part of a larger play aimed at regaining some retail momentum. The recently published Acushnet Q2 financial report suggests, so far anyway, it’s working.

We weren’t able to get any photos, but we were told the new coloring will be similar to AVX. Call it something between glossy and opaque, not matte or flat; more Srixon than Callaway – albeit with a slightly greenish hue.

If release patterns hold, you can expect the new Pro V1 to be launched at the PGA Show in January. Yup, we’re about 5 ½ months out. There hasn’t been any indication the Titleist feels any sort of need to lower prices, so expect both yellow and white versions to retail for +/- $52 a dozen.

More info as it becomes available.

I have been wanting Yellow ProV1’s for years. I asked a Titilest rep and PGA show years ago and he said that the Pros don’t play them so they would not make them. Pro’s don’t buy golf balls, we do! I have tried all the other top golf balls but I love the ProV. It is about time they catch up with the times.

Played yellow for years because I happen to see it better. Everyone’s eyes are different and are able to see some things better than others. I had a cousin who was color blind and his whole world was orange, brown, gray, and white. Yellow and white looked the same to him. I am able to pick out that yellow but white does not stand out and I cannot follow to ground when out a couple hundred yards.

I’ve been going to the Titleist Ball fitting lecture/session every year when demo days comes around. Every year someone asks about colored balls and why they don’t have them.
Every year the Titleist rep tells the same story, ” we don’t believe in them, will never make them, we don’t make pink or women’s balls….”

This past year they had the orange and pink velocity balls for trial. They had to do some back peddling to explain why they now make these colored balls, with an aim at women. Breaking both their rules.

Each person could choose 2 balls to try. 1/3 were prov/provx, 1/3 prov/ATX yellow, 1/3 orange and pink velocity.

I switched to yellow years ago. love the look against the foggy morning sky we often get. can’t see white against that mess.

      side benefit of new color.
When you find a lost one on the course, you know how new it is.
they have made so many white ProVs over the years you never know how old one could be.

The rep who said those things about titleist not having colored pro vs was an idiot. If they were so tough-guy traditionalist about colors, the trusofts, nxts, etc would be only white also. The fact of the matter is that adding color changes play with many materials. In the tennis industry, grips and strings are similarly affected. Changing the color of a string can make it stiffer, and grips can be less tacky. In MGS’s interview with Dean Snell, he says straight out that making yellow would be an engineering obstacle, as well as a production question. I don’t know why that rep would give you that BS line other than to sound tough.

I like matte orange in particular. I found it to be the easiest to see in flight and on the ground in the rough. Surprisingly even more so than yellow. The Wilson FG Tour in matte orange would make me buy 50 dozen of them!!

I HATE yellow balls!! They are so much harder to find when they find the rough. I could care less about the “innovation.”

A few years ago I made the switch to chrome soft yellow only because all the guys in my regular group all played white. All 4 of us are single digit hdcp so often we pull up to a green wondering who’s ball is who’s. That went away once I switched and I became hooked on the color. Although the thought of $52 dozen doesn’t excite me, I will take advantage when they do the buy and get! Glad to hear the change is coming.

They won’t be 52 off course. Every online and off course retailer will sell for 47.99

So sad that price is a “controlled” $47.99…almost all OEM products are price “controlled” retailers have to sell at set OEM prices or they cannot sell their products……just think how much we would save on top line golf equipment if it was not somehow legally fair traded…People are all up in arms over Trump and his tariffs what do you think all golfers are paying when they buy OEM golf equipment…even older models are price controlled by OEM’s…If Dick’s came out and said they were selling ProV1’s for $43.99 today, tomorrow Titliest would pull every Titliest product out of Dick’s and more then likely hire a hit man to go after “Dick”.

Yellow balls are the flavoured martinis of golf. I’m a purist and will stick with white…like vodka or gin.

Whether they are played on Tour or not, about 20% of all golf balls sold in the U.S. are of a color other than white. In Japan it’s 40%. By not offering the best selling ball on the market in any other color option has GOT to be affecting their bottom line.

Tiger played well at the PGA using a Bridgestone it should give a boost in sales. He was able to stick the pin and putted well. You could see the “B” as the ball rolled.
      Bridgestone is cheaper too!

I had been told by several Titleist R&D Ball people, that the reason the ProV hadn’t been offered in yellow was the particular urethane they used wasn’t conducive to the yellow paint. But the AVX had a different material 4C so they could use yellow paint, so I’m curious if that means they have changed the urethane they are using or found a paint that works with it.

Depends. I spent most of my life in the North East. Now I’m retired in SC. Here the Bermuda rough is not overseeded and it goes bleach white in the winter. It stays thick and deep. Love me my yellow

Switched to Chrome Soft because the Pro V 1 was not sold in yellow, the only color I can follow in flight anymore. Surprised it took them so long to figure out that they were losing sales. Tennis got over the all white decades ago. Welcome to the future Titleist.

Not having yellow in the ProV1 was the reason I went over to Srixon many years ago. I just find the yellow easier to follow and find out on the course and I’m usually the only one playing it so I know which ball is mine right away. Unfortunately for Titleist I also discovered how good the Srixon balls are and have no plans to switch back. Titleist is late to the party as usual.
