2021 Golf Ball Survey

As we look for ways to keep the ball rolling and leverage our Ball Lab to provide insights into the too-often overlooked golf ball category, we again wanted to step back and listen to what you have to say about the golf ball.

This 2021 iteration of our  Golf Ball Survey is an opportunity for us to learn about your buying (and playing) habits. In addition to taking the survey, feel free to share additional thoughts on all things golf ball in the comment section.

Oh … for those of you who have been asking, yes, another robot ball test is in the works for this summer. Stay tuned for details.

From online ball fittings to personal experience (in the past year alone I have literally hit everything from wound balls (still have a couple dozen given to me in a shag bucket) to premiums balls such as ProV1/V1x, TP5, Snell, etc.) and while I love the feel of premium balls I am not sure I am where using such would enough strokes off my game to warrant purchasing such. The most fun golf ball I’ve used is a cheap Wilson 2pc ball (cut one in two to see) that is sold in 2doz size balls at Walmart. My wife saw them on clearance for $3 a bag and was another 50% off at the counter. She got them for roughly 6cents apiece. Funny thing is they fly well, roll well, don’t scuff up quick and seem to almost impossible to lose. Something is relaxing when you can do just as well with a $0.06 ball as you can with a $4.00 ball….

If you play a course with firm greens, the cheap 2 pc balls can make the game frustrating when balls won’t hold the green. For what many of us spend on golf annually, playing a urethane ball that leads to better scores is a small investment.

I am a true blue ProV1x player. I also haven’t bought golf balls for 7 years. I play 5 days per week along with practice. During my practice rounds I relax and fish for balls. I’m a faithful MGS reader every day. I love these articles.

The survey was interesting, but one question was a little difficult for me to answer because it assumes I don’t make my choice based on experience – where the only factors to choose were “Brand Rep”, “3rd Party Reviews”, “Price”, etc., those rankings do not reflect my number one reason, which is experience with the brand, which I feel is different from brand reputation or anything a 3rd party has to say. That answer should be viewed in the context of “among the factors listed”, instead of “the most important factors”. Other than that, thanks for letting our voices be heard!

Just wanted to add….I am always ball testing. M favorite is ProV1x. But at a 14 handicap I lose my fair share of balls and usually purchase Snell mtbx

In cooler weather I play the Titleist Soft feel, Callway Hex Soft or Taylormade Soft Response. Once we get over 70 degrees I play the Titleist Tour Speed or Pro V 1.

Cheapskate – wait – value conscious geezer (71+) at a new low 6.7 since 2012. I’ve been working out and practicing – what an incredible idea. [insert smack face emoji here].
Taylormade Tp5x – because of a killer deal on pro tour practice balls.
      Fall back is Pro V1x – practice/tour

Both are a good match to keep my driver spin (bloopers) under control.

Distance with driver, spin around the greens. Consistency from the Ball Lab. Thanks

I play a lot of balls but my gamer is the Srixon Z Star XV. I like the combination of distance and I get plenty of spin to hold greens also. Yes, I do have more of the Srixons to cull than I would like when I balance the balls. I also play TP5x as my #2. I am always looking out for the best balance low price that produces good distance and enough spin to hold greens. I wanted to like the Kirklands 3 piece due to price but they just over spin on my driver.

Maxfli Tour in the green is still working for me. If price didn’t matter I’d be Pro V1 all day. The most consistently accurate balls out there.

But it does matter to me.

My preferred ball for the past 6 months has been the Snell MTB, primarily because of the cost. I previously played Pro V1 paying the usual full price, then I had started buying 2018 Chrome Softs from Amazon at substantial discount ($28 to $32 per dozen), but that deal dried up after awhile, so I moved on to Snell’ MTB.

I typically play a yellow ball because my playing partners always play white balls. I hate walking up to golf balls in the fairway and checking logos and markings to see whose ball it is. Playing a yellow ball eliminates that. Plus I play 2 courses, each with holes alongside driving ranges. At both these courses, it’s not uncommon to have 30 white driving range balls sitting on fairway next to the driving range fence, especially during twilight hours.. Playing a yellow ball, makes it so much easier to find my ball on this particular holes.

But that also has led me to a box of Vice Pro balls, recently since the Snell yellow MTB’s have been out of stock since last year. The Snells perform better than the Vice Pros for me, but playing a yellow ball is preference for me. simply from a convenience standpoint.

In the golf ball survey, you should include the questions, have you been fitted for a golf ball and rank the importance of fitting. E.g. if I could get you 5 extra yards on your wedge with 500 rpm more spin and possibly cheaper, would you be interested.

as Shank said. the most important factor is how the ball plays for me.

I could care less what the pros play until ya’ll see me playing on TV. I’ve played most of the flavors of Titleist and a few other +$45 a dozen balls when I won/was given a box and don’t see myself ever switching. Not worth the premium for a 12 handicapper and also no one is pocketing my ball from the fairway either.

I was playing the Chrome soft truvis ball and had some balls that were just poor performers. I also had issues with the stopping spin with mid irons.

I switched to the Pro V1x this year after testing several balls. I like the mid iron spin levels and they are consistent. I would love if the had colored balls readily available but finding them below retail price on line is tough in yellow..

I liked the Bridgestone Bs about the same as the Titleist and chose the Pro V1x based on your ball review. Thanks

The last question needs to have a choice for “Personal use/testing/fitting” added. I answered it honestly, but none of the choices are truly why I play my preferred ball.

Tried practically every ball on market and have to say.. I love feel of chrome soft throughout my whole bag.. titleist prov1 are another of my choices for all round game… but did find a Costco signature performance + and have to say are amazing for the money. They are now my ball of choice for everyday use and chrome soft for competition matches.

Still looking for you guys to test the $20-$25 offerings from Bridgestone and Titleist. These are available at every Target, Walmart and Academy Sports throughout the country. Most of us busy people that don’t want to throw down $50 at the Pro Shop are buying these. So, lets get em to the Ball Lab!!

On the last question, I answered the Top 6 but the real reason I play the ball that I play is because I did an actual golf ball fitting and the ball that I play was the best performer for me. Dispersion, distance, angle, spin, PUTTING etc.

I have been playing TM TP5X a the suggestion of my club fitter due to my tendency to overspin my driver. The TP5X, along with my new driver has allowed me to increase my fairways hit percentage by about 40% according to Arccos. I have also had good results with the ProV1x left dash.

QStar Tour, great ball for me. I hit a driver 245-260 yards. These balls spin well for me and stop on wedge shots. I was playing the vice pro but changed due to getting a sleeve of these from a demo day and they are easier to purchase local!

The golf ball test that you did made a big impression on my decision on what ball to play. I used to play whatever premium ball I could get on sale. Not realizing what a difference it could make. I have a ring gauge to check for roundness ( I’ve had it since the days of wound balls and they could be out of round after a wood hit let alone a topped iron) I took it to check the 3 dozen brand new balls that I had and at least one third were not round. That is something I would have never checked before right out of the box. And because there are hidden things that could make the ball not do what it’s supposed to do I put them all in my shag bag. I only by Titleist ProV1x now because of there quality controls. Thank you again for bringing this information to light. Oh I wish I could still trust the balls that I used to get on sale. But I wouldn’t play a club that was counterfeit and would not perform like it should
