(4) TESTERS WANTED: Honma TR20 Driver

Let’s start with a statement so obvious it’s almost not worth mentioning. The only thing better than bombing a drive…is bombing a drive several yards farther.

In fact, it’s probably safe to assert that there isn’t a golfer on the planet who would turn down a bit more ball speed by simply switching drivers.

I know, “you can’t buy a game.” Blah, blah, blah. But, you can buy better technology…right?!

In our Most Wanted testing, Honma’s TR20 driver finished 4th overall and produced the 4th highest average ball speed. Moreover, Honma states that nearly every professional who has tested the TR20 has picked up speed. Prior to his departure, former staffer Justin Rose stated that Honma’s driver was 4-5 MPH faster than the comparable TaylorMade model.

Is it hyperbole or a bona fide Japanese driver that can hang with the big boys?

TESTERS WANTED

We’re looking for FOUR golfers who are motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to providing a thorough review to put the TR20 to the test.

Testing is open to golfers in the US or Canada.

Think you’re a good fit?

Over the years, I’ve had fittings from Ping, Cobra, & Titleist. Have demoed Taylor M1, M2, & M6. Currently use Titleist 915 D2, 11*, slight fraw bias, firm shaft, which goes 220-230 yds.
More recent Titleist /Trackman fittings with 917 & TS2 mated with other shafts. Results were a few yards gained; not much change in dispersion; so newer models didn’t warrant purchase.

I think I would be a good tester.

I am a sixty-three year old man and have played with hand me down clubs for awhile. It would be great to play with a brand new Honma Driver and show the fellas I play golf with a new and exciting product to show off with.

Given my swing speed is low to mid 80s, I’m certainly not going to see the 4 or 5 yards that a pro would see at 110 mph. I play a Ping g410 LST and just went a little bit nuts and upgraded my shaft to the ventus red (the “real” one). I’m definitely seeing better ball striking in terms of what the face tape tells me. So realistically, though I love to mess with clubs, I’m good for now. And even if I did get 2-3 yards father how much is that costing me per yard?

So there’s a new driver a the market that give you 3 to 5 mph in head speed , like I never heard of that one before. . BT Barnum once said, there’s a sucker born every minute and even more if you’re a golfer.

I would love to test the TR20 460. I’ve been switching between a 2016 Taylor Made M2 with a Sr. shaft and a XXIO Prime 9 with a R-flex shaft. The XXIO is a bit longer but the TM M2 is more consistent. Will the Honma TR20 460 be as long as the XXIO and as consistent as the M2? I hope so!

I would hope that it’s AT LEAST a little faster seeing as how it costs a hundred bucks more!

There are a couple dealers that are unloading a bunch of Honma TW747 products on ebay. I won an auction and got a brand new driver, headcover and wrench. I id low and won. I’ve been curious about Honma but never found one to try. I am impressed. My longest drives are no further than my Ping but my misses are almost always straighter and longer. Seems like I can hit it all over the face and it doesn’t vary much. I’ve played 3 rounds with it and have had great results. when I miss the fairway it’s not by much so I’m never scrambling for bogey like I am with my Ping when it goes off line. Honma may have something the others should be looking at. The quality of “made in Japan” trumps the Chinese stuff IMO.

One would think distance would be basically a function of club head speed at impact, face impact location, face orientation and path, cg location, cor, etc. All factors that should be relevant in a purely objective robot test. But what if there is something about the club that induces the golfer to swing faster?.

I can think of only two ways (within the rules) to get 4 mph more club-head speed out of a driver: 1. Reduce its moment of inertia (as measured near the top of the grip), or 2. Reduce its coefficient of wind drag (by reducing the projected area that it presents to the wind or/and by improving its streamlining).

A club that induces a golfer to swing faster? Like its enchanted? Sounds like Harry Potter’s domain.

Golly, now you’ve got me to wondering: Do you suppose Harry Potter has a hairy putter??

If they made a senior model – I cannot generate the same swing speed I did 40 years ago. Maybe the industry can provide senior only models?
