(4) TESTERS WANTED: PING Long Game Fitting/Gapping

Fairway woods, hybrids, and crossovers are the Jan Brady of golf clubs (Marsha-Marsha-Marsha!). Drivers get all the love and attention, and irons are the bling we love to flash. But a fairway wood or hybrid fitting isn’t likely going top the Must Do list for most people.

But according to top fitters, that’s a mistake. “The gap between driver and your last iron is an area that most golfers pay very little attention to,” says James Lee, Master Club Fitter at PING Golf. “But it’s an area that if done properly can make huge improvements in a players game.”

Can the right mix at the top end of the bag make a difference in your game? Let’s put that to the test, shall we?

TESTERS WANTED

So how do you pick the right crossover/hybrid/fairway mix? We are looking for FOUR of you to be fit by an authorized PING fitter for the right set of G410’s. Not only will you be testing/reviewing the specific clubs, but you’ll also be reviewing if the Jan’s are every bit as important of the Marcia’s, and should get the proper love.

The fitter will help you determine the right mix of fairway woods, hybrids, and crossovers for the long end of your bag.

As per OEM guidelines, this review opportunity is open to any avid golfer plying his trade in the US of A.

HOW TO APPLY

All of MyGolfSpy’s Community reviews require a serious commitment on the part of the reviewer. You will need to be motivated, detail oriented and savvy with online forums, so please make sure you read the following instructions carefully and apply in the proper place.

Please note this is not a giveaway or contest. We’re looking for four people committed to making a full evaluation and writing a detailed review for our Community Forum. Testers will be selected based on how well they demonstrate that commitment in the Forum Application Thread.

Great chance to fill in the much need gaps from driver to my longest iron. Seems as if my yardages are widely spread out between my driver, 3 wood and hybrid sometimes they are similar as well. Would like to be more consistent with clubs that are fitted for my game ??

Ive been working on this for the past couple of years. Right now my biggest problem is that I hit my 3 Wood (14.5 degree) about 260 off the tee, but generally struggle to get it off the turf on the fariway. I have a 17 degree hybrid thats consistently 220-225, a I switch between a 20 degree hybrid thats about 210 and my 4 iron is about 205-210 depending on where IM playing, how its been going lately, etc.

Ive been searching (lately) for a higher lofted three wood (a 16 might be ideal). But most of what I find is 15 or 15.5. In my head I keep thinking that one-half to one degree extra likely isnt enough, but if I do go to 16 (even if its called a 4 wood) then does that make my 17 degree hybrid useless? WOuld I be better off without a 3 wood if thats the case (even though I still like it for semi-driver distace and a little more accuracy off of the tee)

these are the questions I roll through over and over. Im sure Ive even left some out here as Im not going to subject everyone to the vagaries of my psychosis.

What I do know is that I scored an awesome deal for a membership this summer so I will be playing more than ever. A minimum of 27 holes a week (one 9 hole after work league and one 18 hole weekend buddy round). Id love it if I could not buy the beer EVERY week (I have a 16.4 index and am still the worst in my group)

Anyway, thats my story. Pick Me! Pick Me! LOL

I was in the same boat as you Max and never seemed to get enough loft from my 3 wood, so i turned my G400 14.5 to plus one @15.5 deg. last season and it hit closer to what it got off the tee. But having just switched to a G410 LST 159CC 3 wood with the Mitsubishi CK orange S flex, I have to say it launches better than any 3 wood I have ever played. Even at the stock loft of 14.5 deg. it launches around 15-16 deg. with ease. But the 3 and 4 G410 hybrid hit extremely well also with the CK blue shaft. Now i have to decide on my G210 4 iron or to keep the G410 4 hybrid in the bag this season.

I had the same issue that you have with the 14 degree 3wood. I had a hard time to get it airborne but started using the 15.degree Cobra F9 and have no issue getting the ball in the air

I am a 64 year old, high single digit handicap with a mixed bag. I would love a chance to see if I am gapped correctly from driver through hybrids. I am in AZ and play year round.

I would be a good candidate for the test due to having a titleist 913 fairway wood (15 degree) and a Nike covert 20 degree hybrid that has withstood the test of time, however I’m guaranteeing I’m losing distance and control with the constant use as a college golfer. At my current home course at school, we have a top 100 Ping fitter at South Side Country Club. I would either need a stiff or extra stiff shaft with low spin specs. But it has been since high school since I’ve been fitted for fairway woods so I’d assume there would be a vast improvement of distance and dispersion of shots if I were to be fitted for newer, and technologically advanced clubs.

I play a 13deg 3wood a 17deg 5 wood and my next club is a 4 iron…. I’m sure there are some gaps in there. I would love to go through a fitting to see where those gaps are.

John, I have a mis-matched set of Taylor made 3-wood, Titlist 19 & 23 degree Hibrids and I live in Scottsdale so I would be a great selection for testing the Ping products.
