“I Don’t Know Any Other Way” – The Adam Beach Story, Part 2

In Part 2 of our 2-part series on MyGolfSpy owner, founder, and guiding spirit Adam Beach, MGS Staff Writers Dan Mann and John Barba examine how MGS got its start, the inner-workings of the unique partnership between Adam Beach and Editor, Tony Covey, and a preview of what Adam thinks will be the next big thing.

If you want to have a little fun sometime, click on the little magnifying glass icon in the upper right-hand corner of the MyGolfSpy.com home page and check out the archives. If you want to see how this whole thing started, type 2007 in the Search bar, and then go to Page 4 of the results. There you’ll find the very first story ever posted by MyGolfSpy, on December 1.

Your Secret Agent For Everything Golf, reads the headline. The story promises Spy Photos of unreleased clubs, golf stories that have never been told, insider interviews and close up looks at under the radar products.

“We will literally be everywhere to get the best pictures and stories for you,” the story promises. “There is nothing that will stop us from getting you what no one else has seen before.” Humble beginnings to be sure, but as the song says, From small things, Mama…

…Big Things One Day Come

“I knew I always wanted to become the Consumer Reports of Golf,” says Adam. “I did a focus group study before launching MyGolfSpy, and the message was ‘just tell me the truth, man. We just want someone to not bullshit us about all this equipment.’ There was no go-to place for that at the time.”

It took a while for that go-to place to actually develop. You don’t start a website and have the golf manufacturers work with you from day-1, especially when you don’t allow them any avenue from which to control or manipulate content. Credibility, trust, and legitimacy are earned traits.

“A year-and-a-half before I started MGS, I knew exactly what I wanted,” says Adam. “I saw it all, but I thought it would happen quicker than it did. It was slow play, man.”

“If you guys knew the evolution of how this happened, and how we had to do things differently all the time, it would blow your mind. But there was no way we could have started out day-one saying I want to test the way we’re testing now and have the golf companies buy into it. You had to build influence and build readership. You had to keep asking for another club because we knew doing six testers wasn’t enough. We had to get to 20.” – Adam Beach, MyGolfSpy

MyGolfSpy’s equipment testing protocol has evolved over the past 10 years, but always with the goal of giving the customer what that original focus group asked for.

“Every year we’re working to get better and smarter for the consumer,” says Adam. “There are always people trying to copy you or bash you. But hey man, you can come meet me and see how we do things.”

For years the Golf Digest “Hot List” had been the highest profile club “test” in the industry, but MyGolfSpy’s Most Wanted is hoping to change that.

“I had a talent agent call today to discuss a potential project,” says Adam. “He says no one wants to spend money on ads in the Hot List anymore because none of the companies – not just the golf companies, but the ancillary companies, too – trust what they’re saying anymore.”

Adam & Tony

If you want to know what it’s like to hang around with Woodward or Bernstein (millennials, ask your parents), walk a PGA Show with Tony Covey.

“He’s one of the smartest guys you’ll ever meet, and that’s no bullshit,” says Adam of Tony. “If I know something about technology, golf club design, etc. – and in the beginning, I am way ahead of Tony on all of that – he will eventually surpass me in all of that.”

tony-covey-part-2

Tony has been with Adam almost from the beginning. There are plenty of similarities between the two, but also enough differences to keep it interesting.

“He’s black and white, and I love black and white. It’s simple, it’s clean, it’s easy,” says Adam. “We’re both on the same path, but we’re riding in different lanes, you know? He’s so detail-oriented at his core that he won’t let me get away with not getting the details right, which is what I need.”

“I like to move fast , and I like people to get shit done fast. Tony does both. He’s a hard working son of a bitch and he never complains. We push each other hard, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.” – Adam Beach on Tony Covey

Tony was an IT guy who had his own golf website before hooking up with Adam. He didn’t go full-time with MGS, however, until the IT gig dried up.

“He called me and told me he’d been let go from his job,” remembers Adam. “I didn’t have enough money, or a pot to piss in, for that matter. He told me how much he needed to make and I swore to his wife that within 12 months he’d make that kind of money. She thought I was crazy, but I busted my ass to make it happen because I had to have that guy.”

“We don’t hang out that much in person – we’re both kind of introverted and odd. He has some things he doesn’t like about me, and the way I do business chaps his ass a little, but I love Tony to death. He’s one of the best human beings I’ve ever meet. I thought I was a straight shooter- but that son-of-a-bitch is a straight shooter.”

The Next Big Thing

Milestones are often cause for reflection, and this December MyGolfSpy will reach its 10th anniversary. Adam’s decade-long mission of #PowerToThePlayer brand-building has carved out a unique niche – that of truly untainted, unbiased and unapologetic equipment reviews and honest profiles of the people and companies making that equipment.

Will the next 10 years bring more of the same?

Well, if you know Adam, you know the answer is an emphatic yes.

And also a definite no.

To longtime readers, that seemingly paradoxical statement shouldn’t come as a surprise. The MGS you know will continue on, better and bigger than ever. But there will be something new coming, something Adam calls the next big thing that will, in his words, “blow the f***ing industry’s mind.”

true-golf-fit-screen

“It’s called TrueGolfFit.com,” says Adam. “And the best way I can put it to you is imagine being fit without ever swinging a club. Now imagine it being guaranteed to outperform everything you currently own.”

“We have cracked the golf fitting code, mapped the golf fitting genome. Every single golfer in the world will now be able to buy with more confidence. It is a TRUE Fit to YOU and every individual golfer in the world. It eliminates the guesswork for consumers and matches clubs to their unique swings. And it will all be guaranteed. Longer, Straighter, Lower.  Or your money back.” says Adam.

No more guesswork. All major brands tested. Matched to your swing.

TrueGolfFit.com is the culmination of 10 years of product testing, recording hundreds of thousands of swings and millions of data points from every variety of golfer you can imagine.

TrueGolfFit.com will be “The World’s First Personalized Golf Fitting Engine.”

“95% of the golfers are not properly fit for their equipment. That means 95% of golfers are not reaching their full potential. We will solve one of the golf industries biggest problems, one golfer at a time by using the largest set of connected golfer swing data ever collected,” says Beach. “You will no longer have to physically walk into a store to get a good fitting.”

“We are going to put the power back in the player’s hand and make everything about one thing: performance.  The days of marketing being more important than the actual performance of the clubs these consumers are buying, is over. Golf consumers have become tired of the same old stale marketing ideas and claims made by golf companies.  So were we. So we are going to change that, forever.” says Adam.

truegolffit2

Adams says the inspiration came from an episode of Shark Tank, featuring a Mom who couldn’t find her daughter a pair of shoes that fit her unique foot.

“She created an app where the kid would put their foot down on an iPad, and it would instantaneously measure their foot,” says Adam. “Based on those measurements, the app would pull up shoe recommendations from retail partners that would best fit the child. In that one instant, all the ideas I ever had came together. All the technologies weren’t there yet, but right when I saw it, my entire career, my entire purpose for what I have been doing clicked.”

“Ideas are interesting; they’re both everything and nothing at the same time. Almost all of us have big ideas, execution, however, is the tough part. Tony Covey not only makes many of my crazy ideas come to fruition he makes them better.”

Adam still remembers the email Tony sent, “Don’t call, don’t want to talk about it yet…I think I’ve cracked it…it’s the holy grail.” And he was right. He had developed the formula for how we were going to make this thing become a reality.  He turned the idea and millions of data points in to something that was going to solve one of the golf industries biggest problems.

Speaking of data, are you ready for this? Hope you’ve been paying attention up until now because Adam has been waving his master plan in our faces all along. You can see it in one simple hashtag.

#Datacratic

Pretty bold, huh?

Well, that’s Adam.

“At the very first golf shop I ever worked in – they weren’t hiring at the time,” explains Adam. “I walked in and told them I’d work for free. They said ‘why would you do that?’ I said give me two weeks, if you don’t like me, get rid of me.”

So far, so good, but craving an opportunity and toeing the company line do not co-exist in Adam Beach’s world, and he never forgot the lessons his grandmother taught him.

“I don’t like seeing people get taken advantage of. Never have,” says Adam. “Back in the mid-90’s there was a set of Wilson clubs selling for $400 that were really good, but there was also a set of Callaways that was $1,500.00. The first guy through the door was an Asian guy, and the owner had said never let an Asian guy see anything but the Callways because of the higher price tag and the spiffs they got. I thought that was wrong.”

Needless to say, Adam didn’t last long there.

“It was unfortunate, you know? When African-American people would walk in the store, they’d tell me not to even bother with them. I got to see behind the curtain a little bit at what white, upper- class business shit looks like. Remember, I grew up on both sides of the railroad tracks.”

“That’s not me, man. That’s not how I roll.”

What MyGolfSpy is today is very much a reflection of Adam’s life story. He’s no-nonsense, direct and honest, sometimes brutally so, but always with a heart as big as the Ritz. He will call it like he sees it, he’ll tell you the truth as he sees it, and he always, always, always puts the consumer first.

Because that’s how he rolls.

Before buying my golf gear, I would always start with the Hot List.

Next step is MGS or Golfalot. But most of the time MGS is the deciding factor. Thank you Adam and team.

After reading both parts, what I’ve realized is that Adam must’ve walked some really lonely roads to get where this site is today. Not forgetting all the negative comments on every posts. But thank you for not giving up.

To not have to physically go into a fitting centre or range fir a conclusive fit out is a joke!!! Let me know how many tour players are using this fudged fit out???
On earth for starters are you going to test lie angles, spin rates, launch angles etc etc.
Golf spy have lost all the decent to elite players I know now due to this obvious shift towards selling online frim a warehouse!

      Nathan,

Before you get too busy throwing out !!!’s and ???’s let’s start somewhere hopefully all of us in the business of helping golfers can agree.

PROBLEM #1: Currently the majority of golfers do not get fit.
PROBLEM #2: Competent fitters are not available in all locations on the globe.
PROBLEM #3: Fittings are not consistent. You can go to 10 fitters and get 10 different recommendations.
PROBLEM #4: The majority of golfers will NEVER walk in to a store to get fit. Never have, never will.
PROBLEM #5: Time. Fitters have limited time to give a recommendation typically only based on how a golfer swings that exact day using those exact X amount of swings during that fitting. That is not nearly enough data to make a proper fitting.
      .
      .
      .
      .

These are problems the industry hasn’t solved after decades of knowing these problems existed. And when you look at why, you see fairly quickly why they never will solve these problems. It is not in their best interest to solve these problems for bottom line reasons and many others that conflict with how individual entities do business. The solution to these problems takes someone that is 100% agnostic, 100% unbiased and 100% dedicated to testing for all consumers. That typically has not been how you would define most golf manufacturers or fitters up until this point.

Now, during the initial launch and Phase 1 of TrueGolfFit I still think that the 5% of golfers who do walk in and get a professional fitter they “might and most likely” will be better off. But before Phase 4 of this is over, I do 100% feel we will be able to give not only a more consistent fitting but show bigger gains/benefits for all golfers. That will equate to longer shots, more accurate shots and lower scores based on Strokes Gained. And it will all be backed by data. If you or any other fitter is able to do that for golfers I applaud you and wish you the best because I will be your #1 fan for helping us solve the problem I have dedicated my career to solving.

      Good Luck,
      Adam Beach

Your first two sentences are what keeps average golfers away from fitters. Average golfers really don’t care about that at all. they don’t watch the PGA Tour, or golf at all and could care less what some player has in his bag.

That is not what is important to an average golfer. Fitters don’t understand that. What someone plays on tour will do 0 to help someone. Who cares is Dustin Johnson uses a TM Spider putter, how is that going to help me?

Big whoop, that Titleist is #1 ball on tour. Why does that mean an average player has to play that?

If you can’t hit the fairway 62% of the time, like the average on tour is, how is selling more distance going to help that? Furthermore, how is caring about spin, lie, bounce, etc going to help on the approach shot from the tree line? Then, what is their chances of making GIR and how close do you think they’ll be to the PIN?

Fitters, and pros, are out of touch with the common average guy. The average guy doesn’t care about being scratch and most likely, doesn’t care about his handicap. When you figure that out, you’ll finally understand, there are literally two different worlds in golf. The pros, and those who wish to improve, and everyone else.

As Adam has pointed out, there are a lot of problems with the current fitting system. I’d add another problem being sponsors and bias. Good luck going to fitter for a set of Mizuno clubs if they don’t carry them. Good luck getting a proper wedge fitting, when the only wedges they use are Titleist and Cleveland. How is that helpful? Good luck getting a putter fitting, and finding any non-name brand putter to try as well.

1… 70% of golfers in Australia are fitted!
2… Extremely competent PGA fitters are available widely across Melbourne world famous sandbelt!
3… Go to a highly regarded Fitting centre with great success rates.
4 Majority of American golfers dont walk into a store to be fit, over here they do 90% of the time because they are well educated on why they should.
5… In our store we make the time 90mins minimum for our customer for the most extensive one on one fitting of a real person not a number.
And reference to JB at no stage did I suggest anyone should be using what tour players use! But if true fit works the all PGA tour players will use the system wouldnt they? I think not!
To be capable of fitting out the average golfer is something you can do only once you are capable of fitting the most elite also.
At no stage did I say anything about having to be scratch.
Fitting a 20 marker is something all good PGA fitters are great at doing, the amount of shots I and my staff have helped our high marker handicaps is phenomenal.

      Nathan,

I think it is great that most golfers in Australia get fitted. The system in America is quite different. If I wanted to buy clubs I’m limited to 1 golf shop, or big chain stores, namely Dick’s, and they closed down their Golf Galaxy store. I’ve also done a lot of traveling around the country and the same thing applies. In fact I’ve been in places where you had to travel hours to find a store.

The next piece is the goal. In America the system is heavily tied to who the fitter is sponsored by. I kid you not, it is extremely difficult to get fitted for a set of TM irons when the local pro fitter is a Titleist staffer.

There is also the lack of choices. The golf shop near me, has a full Mizuno fit cart, a half-ass Calaway fit cart, and a few popular other brands for irons. So you can’t honestly compare clubs with equal shafts, etc. If you wanted to get fitted for Titleist, you would be out of luck.

Next, is how fittings work. I went to the local pro at Golf Galaxy before they close. They charge upwards of $200 bucks for a full fitting from ball to driver and every club in-between. This is great an all, but of course, limited to what is in the fit carts (and no one has Cobra, Wilson, Nike, and Ping to name a few). However; all new purchases come with a custom fitting, but you have to buy the clubs first. This is totally backwards, because now you are tied to the clubs you buy.

Then there is the dreaded “what you should play” mentality. This is the worst. You are judged by handicap, rather than what actually works for you. I don’t have an official handicap, but I fit into the range of GI based irons. I play a more players iron. GI irons inherently have a lot of bounce, something that my sweeper style swing doesn’t mesh with. Every time I go to see a fitter they point me to the GI clubs because of my handicap and don’t care to hear about personal preference, or goals.

In America it is more about money and sales, and not the education piece. To me this is a huge problem. I would absolutely love to be full fitted, however; I can’t stand bias opinions and one directional sales pitches.

In an ideal world, a golfer should be able to step into a golf shop and immediately be met by working, accurate launch bays with available heads from every club manufacturer and available shafts from every shaft manufacturer. At that point, a fitter can fit the customer based on preference of the club head, weight of shaft, and desired ball flight. Then build a test club and give it a go. Swap out heads for comparison using the same shaft, etc.

When that day comes, maybe America will change their mind about fittings.

I quit reading and listening to the “Hot List” years ago. There’s no real data and almost everything is considered “GOLD”. So how do you differentiate?!? If everyone’s a winner, then no one truly is.
As a consumer, I was always looking for more REAL information. I’ve found it, again and again, at MyGolfSpy.com. Real testers, testing real products with real results. Thanks to Tony and Adam, and the entire MGS family for all they’ve done to get the facts to the golfing community!!

The “Hot List” is easily predicted year after year… Simply scan the magazine to see which manufacturer is spending the most on advertising and magically their products show up on the list – normally in the “Gold” category.
Comments posted by various handicappers as to what they liked in the product never offer anything truly helpful. Just generic babble to be consumed by the masses.
MGS reviews have been very helpful to me as a mid-high handicapper because they offer equipment that makes my game more fun. Imagine that! It is my go to source for honest equipment reviews and I have been spreading the word.

Nice read and short bio on Adam. MGS is definitely beneficial to the OEMs with a smaller marketing budget to its peers. I have to believe there is data to back up the hot list in Golf Digest, but also believe there is some politics and money involved.

I am more interested in the True Golf Fit program/algorithm. You guys alluded to this early in the year and it’s almost here. Thanks for always sharing your workbook, but is your algorithm proprietary? Will your calculations work across different golfers of the same handicap? For instance, a 6 handicap may have a different swing profile another 6 handicap, hence why one club may fit one and not the other. Does the True Golf Fit account for that or is it looking at the end results only? If you get a different set of golfers with the same handicap, will it yield similar results/rankings?

Can you confirm that your app is only viable due to the technological advancements made to the smartphone camera. What else can the app do?

      Thanks.

I am a 5.4 and have been at this game for over 50 years. Started off with X-stiff Wilson Staffs because that was all that was on the rack and the pro thought I could handle them at 16 years old. Hopefully this fitting system will be a game changer. I only know of one pro (former LPGA) who will even entertain the idea of “silver” products as a recommendation. Testing equipment is prohibitively expensive for the small club making/fitting/repair shop. Stock clubs are all one length (Notable exception Epic having 44.5 and 43.5 options with non-standard weighting. Only the above pro had even the 44.5 for testing, and then only one shaft and not the correct weights. Still, Kudos to her for being even that far out of the OEM box). There has to be a better way. For me it is a matter of matching tempo to shaft, getting the right lie angle, and getting the right length to hit the ball on the center of the club face as often as possible with “your swing.” No one short of elite players “needs” a $500 driver, much less the more expensive options and $2,000 irons. Maybe attacking the cost of equipment and making that equipment work better for the average player/novice will draw and keep more players to/in a game that OEM’s play a big part in mystifying. A solid shot that goes where you want it to go is a special feeling. Sell access to the feeling, not the badge on a club.

True Golf Fit? With no face-to-face? If anyone other than MGS were to offer that, I wouldn’t swallow a shred! Started golfing three years ago after a looong hiatus. Was introduced to MGS two years ago somehow via the internet. To quote Jack Bruce, “I’m so glad. I’m glad. I’m glad. I’m glad!”

Luv this site. The only site that actually cares about the average joe who has a passion for the game and more importantly the equipment. No agendas, no sales pitches, no skanky wannabe LPGA players claiming to get 20 yds extra because they switched to PXG, no no loud mouth instructors on TGC shoving Titleist clubs in your face, no fake instructors in their artificial turf back yard pedaling Cleveland wedges.
Bottom line, no BS. Simply pure data and facts. Keep doing what yur doing, cause I for one rely on this site to help me make an informed decision on the equipment I purchase and I greatly appreciate that.

Looking forward to the True Fit” details. Matching up your performance test numbers with golfer profiles should prove interesting. I fit with Flightscope+V1 video & have found that most recreational players don’t know their true equipment performance numbers or swing sequence positions. Anything that would help start a fitting closer to reality will be a welcome time saver. Thanks!

Looking forward to your club fitting method. I’ve never been down that road because I never really could trust anyone to “do it right”. If yours is base on math and physics, which I assume it will be, then I will be a customer. Assuming I can afford it. Bottom line is that like most human “fittings” (eye glasses, contacts, dental appliances, prosthetics, etc.) computers can do it better than humans.

Can you tell me how this Truegolffit can see ball flight, timing and tempo of any golfer out there. Will this system be able to fix a slice or hook by recomending loft and lie adjustments. What about M.O.I. of a set of clubs, or frequency measurements of shafts. Will it reccomend a set to be soft or hard stepped to suit a swinger or a hitter?
      Please tell us more.

Are you a clubfitter? You sound skeptical. Or worried?

      To Dave S.
I am neither sceptical or worried. I am looking forward to what they reveal. If the app works, I will use it. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. As golfers say, you can have ten different fittings and come up with ten different set make ups. I think that really confuses golfers. My attitude is if it feels good, use it. And no, I am not brand washed like a lot of golfers out there.

Love what you do and represent. But, wondering when do we get to see the “how” of what this is going to look like.

Love the straight shooting approach that MSG has. Really enjoyed the first part of the article, but left somewhat scratching my head about this most recent read- I was expecting the second part of John and Dan’s interview with Adam, but find the introduction of Tony (ok, the second founding father, I get it) and the introduction of the “Next Big Thing” which comes off more as a teaser advertisement than the normal, unbiased reports, written by numerous spies from scratch to 20+ handicapers, and how it worked or didn’t for them. So, I look forward to how we spies are going to get the opportunity to test this just like everything else across the market, and let our voice be heard, regardless if it is Adam and Tony’s baby. One of the most important -critical factors about MGS is the honesty behind everything in the data. If the baby is ugly, and it is mine, I will be the first to say so- Please keep that approach going!

Enjoyed the follow up – it’s about time the Hot List got fully exposed. Everything is Gold – at least what’s platinum ad sponsor. Spend less get Silver. Worst part is complete lack of data to support ANY rankings. Cheers gents – Crush them

Great stuff. Tony and Adam are a team that I wouldn’t want to be going up against if I was in this business. So glad they are on our side!!

I’m curious why my comment below your first part of this story did not get posted. Most of the comment was very positive to MGS but I did question a few things. If you are as clean and honest as you want us to believe, shouldn’t you post all views? But perhaps now I understand. You have found the Holy Grail of club fitting and will be selling clubs. Good luck. Jump in the water is warm!
