ANNOUNCEMENT: 2017 Most Wanted Testing

ANNOUNCEMENT: 2017 Most Wanted Testing

Today, is a big day at MyGolfSpy.

2017 will be an even bigger year for the consumer.

We are taking advantage of our expanded capabilities, and for the first time ever will independently test all the clubs in your golf bag. That means the driver down to the putter.

This year, the culmination of my 18-year career and the purpose of MyGolfSpy will finally be revealed. I am confident you will once and for all see what #PowerToThePlayer really means. I truly believe what we’re working on will change the golf industry forever and for the better. And it all starts today. We have fought tooth and nail behind the scenes to bring you something we think all of you deserve. The truth. Unfortunately, many industry insiders have done their best to try and keep us from doing that. We have received legal letters from many of the major manufacturers to try and change what we report to you. From day 1, we have turned down all advertising dollars from all the major manufacturers. This is the only way to ensure that our testing protocols and the resulting data, remain pure and above the influence. We have poured our hearts and souls into testing the right thing for one purpose: You, the golfer.

Who Is In & Who Is Out

Today, we ask for your help for what we hope is the last time. And for that help, everything you give to us will be given right back to you (more on that below).

Below is a list of all the companies that are supporting unbiased testing for 2017.  The companies who chose not to support our testing are also listed.

2017-testing-confirmed-list

What We Want To Test For You

Marketing has unfortunately become more important than the actual performance of a product nowadays. We have all seen the claims and by this point, if they were all true, we would be hitting 400-yard drives by now. Any company can make a claim, the true test is seeing which companies stand behind those claims. Our job is to find out which products perform best when tested against the competition.

Companies decline to participate for many different reasons.  The companies that declined to participate in this year’s test have done a great job marketing their products and often have the most to lose by participating in independent testing. So, while we understand they may decline based on their individual business interests, our only interest is the consumer.

That means we have to test these products even when manufacturers decline to participate voluntarily.

The list of products we hope to buy and test for you:

What You Get For Donating

For everything you give to us, we will give back to you plus a little more.

All those that donate today and support unbiased testing will get the following:

I would donate but I’m not rich and on a budget, but I do love reading all info you guys put out on everything you do. this is probably my best site to go to for info on new clubs and balls and all things related to golf. not only do you do the things I’ve said but you also compare bags, balls, gloves, etc. and so forth. best site for all things golf if you ask me. like I said I would love to donate but I’m not Trump. thanks for all you guys and girls I assume do here at mgs.

I am contemplating visiting Club Champion prior to acquiring my third driver of the 2017 season. Will you be able to release your driver results prior to Memorial Day?

Chris, thought I would chime in on Club Champion, I did a full bag fitting with the intent on getting a new driver and the results were phenomenal. Don’t go there if you want to save money but if you’re serious about custom fitting then it’s awesome. I’m also left handed so my selection was a little smaller than RH but I’m used to that. I paid a fortune for my M2 but I picked up an average of 30 yards over my G25 and am now flighting the ball higher (which I wanted). I highly recommend them if you’re willing to pay top dollar.

While awaiting the most wanted driver testing results, the snow in Wisconsin went away; it returned in force; it went away, and now that it is April, the snow is returning. In the meantime, I have been able to do a fair amount of golfing in Wisconsin and I am onto my second driver of the 2017 season. While a beast on the monitors, the Exotic in stock shaft configuration failed miserably when the winds were blowing greater than what the temperatures were registering. Away with the Exotic and onto the Epic. The Epic is the straightest driver I have ever hit in the past 50+ years of golf with the possible exception of an ancient Goodwin. However, I may need a tad higher launch angle. Do you envision releasing the 2017 driver results prior to the OEMS announcing their 2018 models? Your test results will assist me in deciding on my third driver of the 2017 season and many of the contenders are already showing up for sale as slightly used.

First, are we there yet? When might the driver testing results be ready for release? Second, after spending 5 to 6 hours testing Epics and M-1s and M-2s, I am awaiting delivery of my new Exotic EX10. Its performance could not be topped by any of the Callaway or TM entries. Real world results may alter my opinion.

OK, OK, I have donated to the first non-health related or religious entity during my life. Now let me be the second individual to inquire as to the possible schedule for test results being available. Consider this missive to be the first in a series of annoying “Are we there yet?” screeds. As I await your results, I will be endeavoring to conduct my own driver testing pitting the new Exotic EX10 against the Srixon 565, against both versions of the Epic and against all versions of this year’s M1s and M2. I am looking to replace my Bridgestone J815 which has served me well for the past two(2) years. I have already spent too many hours testing the Titleist 917 series, the Cobra F7s and the Mizuno JPX 900 to know that they will not be in my bag. I never fell in love with last year’s versions of the M1 or M2 so I am skeptical regarding this year’s new and improved versions but I will give the a fair and unbiased tryout. In the meantime, have you finished your tests yet?

I buy my drivers based on MGS results. They do it the right way. I currently own two Cobra’s, the FlyZ and FlyZ+ based on their data from 2015. I demoed an M1 but didn’t have much success with it. Wasn’t even close to my FlyZ numbers. I have tried the F6 and F6+ and did not purchase the F6 or F6+ but think I am going to get an F6+. Get the right shaft though and most all of them are long. I use the Project X Hzds red 6.0 and it is hands down the best shaft I have ever used. It replaced my GD DI6 SR that I have used for 2 years. My carry distance improved almost 10 yards with the Project X which is what I look for mostly and spin rate went up 130 rpm only at an average of 101 mph. Of course, this is my swing and the same might not work for you.

I love myspy and everything that it stands for. Pxg has made it clear they are not trying to compete against the big box brands so that doesn’t surprise me. Titleist, they should have sent some to save their ass but TM really surprises me, should of at least sent some woods with their new ball for testing. We have tested pxg, tm, callaway and mizuno all side by side on our trackman recently at a couple variety of swing speeds and have been very impressed with some. Look forward to your testing

I just wanted to note that you are listing the the MSRP for the clubs and you can definitely sell the clubs after the test. So the actual investment is most likely less, but still i hope people step up.

PLEASE 2017, make some clubs that are NOT f***Ingold closed!!!!! What the hell is the point of teachingredients people to hit the ball correctly, when EVERY CLUB on the market is based around ignoring ALL historical instruction and having everything be OFFSET and/or CLOSED to cater to money talking than preserving the game. Our founding forefathers of golf are rolling in their graves, and living legends like Nicklaus and Trevino shake their heads in disdain.

A few things stand out that are interesting…

      1) Why would Callaway not send you the Epic drivers? Everything I’ve seen of those who have tried them are saying great things and if Rory is switching to it from the M2 that has to be significant.

      2) Tour Edge not supporting you guys with equipment is very odd. I love my TEE hybrid and think it is arguably the best in the category. That said, they don’t have the marketing dollars of the big name brands so I’d think they would want to reach as many consumers as possible.

      3) Taylormade continues to be disappointing. I love my M2 and I think they do make some legitimately good product. And, even though the “new” M1/M2 isn’t any different in performance than the 2016 version there are still a lot of consumers out there who have older drivers and may be in the market for an upgrade in 2017. So why wouldn’t you send this product out to be tested alongside the rest of what’s on the market? Seems like they are so confused on who they are right now as a brand.

I had similar thoughts and think, that there could be the following reasons, for those manufacturers, to not provide their equipment:

      1) a) Callaway has its own Epic marketing strategy, which didn´t include MGS from the beginning…
…and they (the marketing department) refuse to change that epic strategy because of MGS.
      b) They are too greedy and even want to sell each and every unit of this driver…
…because they had to pay a THAT epic amount of money to Rory, that the financial department refused additional Epic expenses.
      c) They want to be responsible on their own, for an epic failiure…

      2) Tour Edge is maybe on the edge – and no one wants to be responsible?

      3) a) Taylormade just continues to be reliable – in the good and the bad…
…at least one company you can rely on!
      b) Or they are just fed up with the accusations, that they pay each and every test, which yields a good result, with their good clubs…
      c) Even the theoretical threat, that some of the less helpful people in the marketing (and financial) department may not survive a switch to a new owner, doesn´t scare the responsible, because they are not used to, to be made responsible…

That’s really disappointing by Tour Edge. Their clubs have done well in the past, and they need all the free marketing they can get. Sometimes I don’t think they understand their business or how to grow it.

If I were TM, I’d go for it. They crushed it last year, and seem to be riding a lot of momentum in the metal woods. That’s what moves the brand. I guess there is risk given they’re trying to be sold, but I actually think they have the product not to have to worry.

Have you thought of “sourcing” clubs other ways? Maybe users have some spares that they’d ship you to test with? There have to be a lot of M1/M2 drivers, FWs and hybrids among our site members.

Yes, we have thought of many ways to source product and will do everything we can to get those products that were not provided. That being said if this is a fair test we do not want to test used clubs borrowed form others. We prefer to have them to the exact specs we need them for apples to apples testing. For example we could use some of our own PXG irons but the grooves are used and therefore would not be a fair analysis of that product.

Donated a small bit, I normally lurk but wanted to chime in here. Recently, and I guess not so recently, there have been a lot of really stupid comments trashing MGS and their testing methods. In my opinion they have gone to GREAT lengths to ensure they are testing in a fair, statistically important and correct way, regardless of marketing dollars. I simply cannot believe we have so many people coming by that don’t seem to get it. My question to them would be: “Why are you still here?”.

The MGS staffers responding on here have the toughest job in the world, typing up responses to those people every day, they deserve a medal!

Anyway, to the MGS staffers, I would like to sincerely thank you for all of your hard work in getting us lowly golfers the BEST information available in the market. Do not get distracted by the idiots and keep up the good work!

One more point: one thing I would like to see robot testing on is the Evnflow putter compared to the top 4. Straight strike vs 1/4″ miss left/right vs 1/2″ miss left/right. I think for that particular test it would be very valuable, not so much with the other testing (I’m with you guys on the robot testing being of lesser value).

I can get the Callaway, Taylormade, and Titleist stuff to you for less than the prices you have listed just by selling it to you at the normal everyday price we offer to everyone out of the shop I work at. And in my opinion, the Epic will live up to its hype. It has very low spin numbers off the face. And I believe the tighter dispersion numbers and straighter ball flight will improve many players game.

TourEdge drivers cost $800 plus demand is low. The rest of their line-up has almost zero demand at all. Bridgestone does not seem to be doing much with hard goods for 2017 also very low demand. We get the most demand for reviews of PXG, for the cost, consumers want to see how they perform the most from the feedback we have gotten. Those are the reasons. It comes down to what you guys want to see most and that is how we prioritized the list.

Maybe you could change the demand, if you test them…

…like you did, with EVNROLL and MLA putters…

I bet, that the demand of those was also very low – before you tested them.

The most interesting things are those, who are not that obvious (to the consumer) – isn´t it?

Thank you for your response. If you have any money remaining in the cookie jar, I note that Tour Edge just announced the release of the EX10 which will sell for $344.99. It also appears to be available with a decent amount of no upcharge shaft options. Just begging.

I’m confused, no one is forcing anyone to give any money. MGS is simply asking people to donate if they can to help support this testing and add clubs that manufacturers’ are not providing.

Where is all the hate coming from? If you don’t think they do a good job then don’t donate, there is no need to come here and spew venom at them.

Just a few thoughts of my own on recent testing. I’m 48, 5.7 handicap and live in Florida. Recently hit the Epic Driver, on a range with real golf balls, not range balls. A PGA pro buddy has it in his bag, not set up properly for me, just wanted to see how it felt. Ever hit a nail with a sledge hammer? That’s as solid a driver that I’ve ever hit, and I’m not a huge Callaway fan, can’t wait to give it a try, properly fitted. That thing could and might be simply amazing, we will see how Rory likes it and the numbers compared to the previous year. Was also looking for new irons, went to get re-fit, and the fitter had PXG on hand and I had to try them. After getting my numbers for my new set, Mizuno JPX 900 Forged, tried the PXG 0311. What a major disappointment. Was waiting for that “holy crap” moment, and it never arrived, and thankful for that. Would never pay that price for irons, but with all the hype, stories and articles written, at least I can say I’ve hit them. No feel, not soft what-so-ever, sounded hollow and between tinny and thunky. Now this is just me, a good friend hit them a few months ago, and absolutely loves them, so he was surprised by my assessment. They are cool as hell looking, especially the dark finish, but not for me. But as I said, that’s my thoughts after hitting them, some may hate my Mizuno’s, and that’s fine. Thanks for reading, Happy New Year to all. “Fairways and greens pards”

Question and comment: I assume I am not alone in having previously committed to a monthly donation; I assue that means we don’t have to re-up this this time. Is that correct. There is a reason for preferring donations to subscriptions. That latter limits the number of eyes to those who donate and any sound web business knows that there are two keys to success: eyes and content. You need both and have great content. Restricting eyes to subscribers restricts the number of eyes and that is counterproductive. Of course that means that many subscribers are free-loading which is unfair to donators but there is no way to avoid a version of this problem (game theoretically speaking).
It would be helpful in the name of transparency to indicate the number of donators (both individual basis and monthly), the average donation; and the percentage of subscribers who donate. It would also be helpful to know if there is a monetary shortfall or whether costs are fully covered. I am sure that there are several of us with requisite financial expertise to help with business model if necessary.
I am a bit puzzled by the hostility some readers have exhibited not just for the brands that have declined to participate — after all, a business decision is always about whether the marginal gain exceeds the marginal risk/cost. If you are Titleist, you have more to lose than gain in most circumstances of this sort; and even if that is true in the case of Golf Digest, there is an expectation developed over years that they will participate; I am most puzzled by some of the hostility expressed towards MGS, which only goes to prove you can’t make everyone happy —
BTW, I play PXG irons after years of playing just about everything else and they are anything but strong lofted Pings — and I much admire Pings. PXG drivers — at least in this iteration — would be much better were they no more than rebranded Pings. But the irons are genuinely special.

Regarding PXG, I agree with several others that there are not many golfers who can afford or be willing to spend those amounts for their clubs. Please at least reconsider whether your money would be better spent on buying and testing other companies’ clubs.

Anyways I threw a few bucks in to support the testing and I suggest my friends do the same. It comes as no surprise that the leading market brands declined to participate. They have nothing to prove, but at the same time they also know that each individual end-user will be different and have a completely unique set of user requirements. Titleist has certainly done this before in not submitting clubs for testing because the results are completely meaningless to anyone else.
No surprise either that those struggling for a chunk of the market share have no quibbles about getting their product to market by any means – after all, any publicity is good publicity right? What I would say is that magazine and website testing does play a role in making consumers aware of products and how they potentially stack up against the competition. What is a fact however is that consumers also have a pretty good chance of making their OWN minds up with a simple demo – and it can cut through the BS pretty quickly in terms of what looks, feels and performs to personal taste.
So naturally, I always encourage anyone to try for themselves before reading too much into what someone else has written about a piece of equipment, regardless of how impartial it may be. With the possible exception of of the more “niche” brands, it’s pretty easy to demo any of the products on the list and make an informed opinion on it – making the quest for $34000+ rather pointless. Seriously though, you really expect to go and buy a Scotty Cameron to tell someone how to putt? Get over yourselves.

I don’t have any numbers. I do know that when I’m swinging well I hit the 816 pretty good but when I wasn’t swinging well it was pretty bad. I really haven’t swung in a month and when I took the Epic to the range I was pretty surprised with spin and distance (used same shaft as in 816). Jeff Brennan I only know who I’ve talked to who own the clubs, I can’t speak for “everyone”. All three haven’t seen the performance difference between their irons that cost $1000 and the PXGs. And I’m not hating, just a guess that any “chink” in the armor from performance that likely won’t show to be head-and-shoulders above the rest would diminish the interest by some. Lord knows, I can afford them, I just haven’t seen justification for purchasing them. Some buy them JUST to show they CAN afford them… Anyway, just a hunch on my part.
