Can the decision to include last year’s winner(s) in this years testing be reconsidered? I think a common question in golf consumers’ minds is whether the new technology in golf equipment is making any difference in player performance or is it simply marketing that is generating demand in latest and greatest equipment. I understand that it increases testing overhead in completing the results, but is this increased overhead negligible in that 1 extra club is 3-4% more effort?

i use a six hybrid to get to that 150 to 155 range . I win more money playing guy who think just because I use a eight iron at 128 and they use a pitching wedge that makes them a better golfer. Short and to the right is there flight so go ahead break out that seven iron at 150 yards and be short and tell me I hit it fat. Club up and hit more greens.

After reading Matt Snell’s golf ball review, it was suggested you should test a better (more layered golf ball) to a cheaper ball to see which performs better around the greens for your game. Let’s just say we agree with Matt. How bout MyGolfspy do a test of three layer balls with a in-between price from high to low? I am suggesting from a price standpoint between $45 high to $19 low.

You test only the equipment of the bigger companies :you nearly or never test the stuff of smaller companies like KRANK GOLF ,HONMA BERES ,MIURA .I play HONMA BERES irons and KRANK woods and hybrids and they work fine ,better in my own feeling than the “big guns ”
I’m past over 83 ,I play golf since 1958 ,I’m still playing to a handicap of 7 and beating a bunch of youngsters , I had the best golf teachers in the world and I work a lot on my physical fitness and short game ,so I don’t believe the best equipment does the job for you.
I guess I would play nearly as well with a wooden stick (Like SAM SNEAD at his beginning ) a broomstick ,or a spade .
So though I am interested in your findings (You do expose interesting views ),I take them with a touch of scepticism!

Your feeding the stereotype of the “get off my lawn” senior. I too, am tending towards the elderly, working out and playing the best golf of my life. Current equipment has a LOT to do with it. If you think you can play as well with “hickory sticks” then go buy the replicas available (since you seem to have the resources buying Homma and Krank) and try playing them. I’ll bet you $100 you’ll be at least 10 shots higher.
As far as testing goes, MGS has tested Krank drivers and they finished in the bottom third. They no longer want to participate. If you want MGS to test them buy some and send them to Tony.

I guess it speaks to the masses. Not too many people know about those companies, nor care. I surely don’t. I can’t buy any of those where I live. Krank did participate and got smoked in some testing a couple of years back if I remember. I would rather MGS spend their money wisely, and that’s sticking to equipment people care about and have access so.
Oh, and thanks for the life story, it was very humble.

Your question makes no sense. Top Flite is the 2nd largest golf ball manufacturer in the US trailing only Acushnet. They sell a complete line of clubs and equipment geared heavily to youth, ladies and beginner markets. Their youth sets are very popular and affordable for parents introducing this great game to their kids. No other club manufacturer that I am aware of offers such a range of inexpensive gear to that market which after all is Golf’s future. Bought by Callaway then sold to Dick’s Callaway kept the patents Top Flite had on their balls as I recall and has seen much success with their newest offerings. “Bad golf company” don’t think so.

Topflite and Tommy Armour haven’t been companies for a long while. After passing thru multiple hands both names are currently owned by Dick’s but they are just brand names at this point, not companies. BTW, Topflite’s most recent driver (Tour model) sports an Adila shaft and performs as well as the other top brands for a moderate speed swinger(85-95mph). And for me their Gamer ball is as good as Titliest NXT.

Top Flight lasts because it has filled a niche in the market. They sell inexpensive clubs and balls, a lot of them. When my son was 19 he decided he wanted to start golfing with me so I looked at reviews and shopped around landing on a complete set of Top Flight clubs. The quality is pretty decent and the performance for a beginner is very good. I hit his clubs a few times and had no issues with their performance. He has been golfing a lot since he got the clubs 4 years ago and has now decide that he will continue to play and is ready to upgrade. For a golfer like this there is no need to get custom fit or spend $1000 until they learn to strike the ball and get their swing established.

Great video. I think now that the USGA is working with Jack on limiting distance the equipment mfgs might be crapping in their pants. I have no idea if this problem can be solved? I did hear a good idea today tho from a golf guy I know. He said they need to make the pros play balls that spin like the old wound balata balls. Then let’s see if they can still hit fairways. Maybe a harder ball to control would throttle their swings and thus shorten their games. I know my game is longer and straighter even though I am much older and have lost swing speed. It’s obvious the amateur needs the new tech but the pros are killing the old classic tracks.

Now that I’ve seen and heard Tony in action I like him. Not that I disliked him before but I had formed an opinion. All I had known was his writing (perhaps a little edgy for my tastes a time or two) which I think is pretty good. The other is the dark, grim, angry? photo upstairs in his brief bio. So today after seeing Tony and hearing him speak I’d invite him for a round of golf. Hopefully he’d join me. Seems like a nice straight forward no BS kind of fellow. And no theatrics.

I hope you folks consider doing a driver length set of tests again. I suggest that 43-3/4, 44-3/4, 45-3/4 inch lengths should be the ones tested. Yes you need to add weight to heads to get MOI / Swingweight of the shorter clubs to the level for the longest – but hey, lead tape is your friend! And custom fitters are always adding weight to heads if necessary. Finally I believe average driver length on PGA Tour still 44-1/2 inches. So….keep at it!

I have a few questions
1) Does a driver lose it’s pop after so many hits or years? If so is it because of the face or shaft?
2) I love how you try to save us money by recommending other balls with about the same performance but for less money! Please also share where these product are produced so anyone who would like to buy American can.

In response to your #1 question. I have read in many places that as your driver ages the face acquires more of a “trampoline” effect from springing in and out so many times… thus increasing the Coefficient of Restitution and in effect giving you longer drives but also becoming potentially illegal in terms of COR.

If you’re looking for American Made, high performing golf balls, at a fraction of the price, look no further than a company located in (chilly) Buffalo, NY (where they are lucky to get a 7 month golf season). The company is called OnCore and they produce some great golf balls.

Walt, apples and oranges. The new findings need to be relative to this year’s tester’s. Maybe last year all the testers were Dustin Johnson wannabes. Perhaps this year they’re Jim Furyck disciples. To be statistically accurate last year’s winning driver needs to be re-tested by the group of new testers.

Tony, thanks. I enjoyed the video. I especially like that you didn’t dawdle. You moved things right along. I like a man who gets to the point.
However, I don’t buy your reasoning for not including last year’s winner in the current Most Wanted Driver testing. I think most of us wouldn’t mind if you threw out a small name driver in favor of including the past winner. In short, this gives us all a “benchmark” to judge the new drivers against. Please reconsider.

Two questions. First one: In your opinion and I know about being fitted and other variables, would it be a wise decision to compare my 2017 M2 to the Rogue. I’m looking for distance and forgiveness. I was fitted for the M2 but, am curious if I can gain an extra 3-5 yards with a fitted Rogue. Second one: What is your opinion on the M4 irons. I’m looking to getting back to hitting my 7 iron 150 yds again since I’m 65 and I’ve lost some distance in my irons. I will of course be fitted. Thank you, Dan.

Just bring your M2 to the fitting. IMHO you should always bring your current gamer to a fitting especially if the fitter is using a launch monitor

The easiest way to hit your 7 iron 150 again would be to buy a new one since the lofts are now much stronger for a given iron you might even be able to use an 8 iron.
You need to compare irons of similar loft for a given yardage. Physics does not lie.

Am focused on buying either Cobra F7 1 length or F8 1 length.
As they are in clearance mode; how many differences are there aside from the F8 being approx. $400 more expensive right now.
As a Senior on fixed income, $400 is a bunch of Green fees.. LoL
