Ball Fitting at Titleist: Field Testing

After his recent ball fitting at Titleist’s Manchester Lane Testing Facility in Acushnet, Massachusetts, MyGolfSpy Editor, Tony Covey had a chance to take the ball to the course with the Titleist team. Understanding golf ball performance is only part of the story. Along the way Tony and the Titleist team discuss the MyGolfSpy Ball Test, how to fit yourself for a golf ball, the USGA’s rumored golf ball rollback, and more.

Are you guys doing another ball test next year to see if anything has changed (Callaway) as a result of your test?

So what ball did they recommend for you.

Interesting response from the Titleist rep regarding a potential rollback. The Old Course plays reasonably differently to the way it has for much of the last century. Five of eighteen tees are off the property, greens have been altered, rough grown, fairways narrowed and bunkers added. To suggest everything is OK with the distance issue because Zach Johnson won The Open is glib and blinkered at best, and at worst, ignorant and disingenuous.

Let’s break this down. It’s simple. There are “people”, in certain organizations” that think we need to roll the ball back because there are 200-300 professionals who hit the ball too far. In the meantime, there are 2,500,000 amateurs who can’t hit the ball far enough when playing the most difficult sport they will ever attempt. Yea, that makes sense to me. By the way, I’m a 9 handicap, I play golf 5 days a week, and my daily observation tells me the average male golfer hits his drive maybe 200 yards. Why in Gods name would we want to roll the ball back!

Too bad we couldn’t get many direct answers from Titleist, (not unexpected) but then Tony is not a professional interviewer.

I have had ball fitting two times. In both instances, after they asked which ball I currently played, the fitter ended up recommending a ball that was close in price to the ball I use. They never even suggested a higher priced ball even though one of their range was advertised for my swing speed. I did not find it a very rewarding experience.

Your camera had dirt on it. I was trying to clean my screen! :o)

Aside from that, good to hear the thoughts of the OEMs
