I recently bought a used set of Callaway RAZR Forged irons. They are extremely easy to hit. Ralph Maltby rates them as way easier to hit than most of these yet it looks like a blade.
I have an old set of Palmer Forged “the Standard” blades sitting around. They look great.. Haven’t ever hit them.

The KZG ZO blades were made by Kyoei Golf in Japan. That same head model has been sold with several different name stampings. (all made by Kyoei) Prior to KZG it was the Roger Dunn Staff model with the Bullet .444 name. I had those. I have also seen them with an Epon stamping on them. KZG happened to be in the right place at the right time. Dunn sold the Bullet name and those heads became available from Kyoei again. That was the year KZG was founded (1994). They are similar to irons designed by Lou Ortiz of Orlimar Golf and produced for both Orlimar and TaylorMade around 1980. They were the first irons TM sold. The were very low COG which made them very easy to hit for a blade. Ironically TM later claimed Orlimar stole the design even though Lou Ortiz designed them!

I just bought a whole set at since they look super dandy. Seller doesn’t have much info to share but would love love to hear from you about performance and around what year it was brought to market. Set will be delivered in a few days and it looks divine from the pics though. Greatly appreciate any info mate.

MacGregor VIPs (re-introduced in the mid 80s). gorgeous satin finish with gold inlays. curtis strange did alright with them, winning 2 US opens. i went from a 10hdcp to scratch. what many people dont appreciate unless you play them is how good of a chipper you will become with thin soled and dense club heads. should be at the top of any MacGregor club listing

I would suggest to add the John Letters47 Master Model. Play them since 1990 and haven’t come across irons with a better feel and control (distance and shape).

I have a set of FG51’s and love them. The problem is they don’t go anywhere. I have the original Firestick shafts and easily lose two clubs distance. Would different shafts help? Thanks

Shafts should help. I’ve always hit TT DG S300’s (just always felt right) and been super. A note – classic blades with traditional lofts and shaft lengths (and traditional [lack of] technology) are just going to be shorter – but the control, feel and ultimately the enjoyment I get make them worth the extra club or two of distance.

I’ve played Mizuno MP 29s, 33s, 37s, now playing old set of Mark O’Meara’s Taylor Made Tour Preferred, but alas just yesterday I scored an immaculate set of Founders 200 Forged for an awesome price. I like the Founders b/c “no one else has ’em”, much less in such nice condition. I am done looking, I have bought my last set of clubs.

The Founders 200s remind me of the KZG ZOs. Both are brilliant blades. In an earlier post I forgot to give kudos to an set of Palmer “Standards” I once owned, and still with I did.

ive played taylormade icw5, ,mizuno mp14 ,wilson fg17 , jack nicklaus murfield, top flight, kgz,wilson sam snead signature,,titleist 660 ,,and peterson blades ,, after trying all of the above ,,with the murfields being the best then the mp 14s,coming in a close second, i now play a set of pga cameron blades and these are the best by far as far as distance accuracy and feel ,, i can hit them high low ,, fade draw and straight ,, try out a set and you will never look back ,, GUARANTEED ! they are beautiful with clean lines and set up beautifuly behind the ball ,, dont force them and you will be amazed ,, !!!

i still have a soft spot in my heart for my first set of irons- that were my dad’s before me. probably purchased in ’60-’62. i dont know if they’re special or not, but they felt great (or awful, if you missed), and taught me alot about how to play- namely patience, satisfaction. they were (are, i still have them somewhere) wilson signatures, no. 16062, glide-thru sole, designed by Dr. Cary Middlecoff. memory lane being what it is, i fell in love with the wilson staff fg62 the first time i swung one- looks beautiful, feels better- i’m considering picking up a set just for those special days- nice and cool and calm, a little morning mist still hanging on…

I agree.I discovered these irons at the goodwill store. got them for next to nothing and they actually send the ball to the spot you are hitting at almost every time. what a mystery

no mention of the unique and peerless RAM FX Tour Grind nickel blades, made in the early 90s – gorgeous irons, softer than the softest forged blades (and I’ve played many of your 35), long, pro traj, excellent workability, and they never rust!
plus, Nick Price and Tom Watson combined for a bunch of majors playing these – look ’em up

(I second the vote for Maxfli Aussie Blades, also, btw – fantastic forgings)

I have a set of the Northwester TW 276 blades 2-PW which are in fantastic shape. I have been unable to find out much about the history of them or what they may be worth. It would be great if you could provide me with any information regarding the year they were made, what type of golfer they were made for, what the original price was, what they are worth now, etc… Any information would be much appreciated.

The nicest set of blades I ever owned were the Diawa Advisors (DG-273) used by Ian Baker Finch when he won the British open. I recently learned that these were the same irons Tiger Woods played with for much of his amateur career. I won my club’s championship with them for the one and only time so, admittedly, I am biased. If I could have my pick of those shown I think I’d go for the Epon Technica Pros or the Mizuno MP-14s.

Played the TW276 for 20 years. G reat blade. Friend that worked at Doral got them for me said they are worth app $1000.00 Is that true and if so, where do I sell them?

Awesome list of clubs, Some of the Mizuno’s I owned MS5, TP11 still hold fond memories as do the Maxfli Australian Blades and the original John Letters Master Model.

I suggest adding the Maxfli Australian Blade. I still bring my old set out a couple times a year for grins.

You can’t go wrong with the Titleist 681’s or the Mizuno MP-29’s and you could add the TM 2003-4 RAC MB’s to that list as well. Now you may have to be a low single digit handicapper to get the full performance out of these irons I listed above, but I will tell you when I was a 10-12 handicap I decided to put MP-29;s in my bag and doing that with a lot of practice I went from that level a player to a low single digit player. I strongly believe that when you play a club with a smaller head and less forgiving it gives you much better feedback on where you hit the ball on the face. I didn’t mean to get off topic but I believe these irons mentioned above are some 0f the best designs ever.

Excellent choices- have the 3 plus the following, which are in the same ball park-
14’s, Hogan PC, 695mb w/ TC x1, VIP 1025, 675s, Mizzy Trues, Aussie Blades, Ttour models custom grind, bullet back, and forged 84’s, all excellent feel, all various shafts- DG x100, 6.5, 7.0, and SL, and TX90 in the 681s. Having said that, I’ve had a set of Boo’s 2007 CG1’s he played in Loch Lomond, actually slightly better than the 681s and 14’s.
Hit a Mac Scot Tourney 50’s possibly stainless model at a range once, amazing feel!
I’m searching for a set as i speak-

Fantastic pictures of some serious clubs. Tried or owned loads of the Mizuno offerings but always come back to TP-11. Clubs getting on a bit but they are like old friends.

Probably the most beautiful blades ever made were the Porsche 901s. Made only around 2000-2001. They can still be special ordered directly from the auto factory for 2,000 euros. They even won a PGA tournament (forget pro’s name). They look like of like KZG zero offset, but they are softer mild steel with a thick layer of watt nickel on the face and then a layer of hard nickel chrome, which gives them an extra soft feel. Ebay had a black set a few months ago which sold for $1,700 plus… I understand that a grandson or grand-nephew of the Porsche owner’s family got in the accessory business and had carte blanc to find designers to made high end products, such as Louie Vitton luggage. I believe the 901 irons were made by either Miura, or Ishibara foundaries, which are both top notch. Anyway, if you ever get a chance to hit these, you will not forget them.

Does anyone know where I can pick up a BRAND NEW SET of MIZUNO TP 9’s in Left Hand? I have been looking everywhere online and can’t find them. In my opinion, these are the most beautiful blades ever produced. I read online somewhere that Nick Faldo won one of the majors with them some time ago. Also, those Titleist Miura’s that Tiger used (Picture # 6) are pretty damn fine as well. Does anyone know where I could get those in Left Hand? Thanks for your comments!!!

Good call on the Daiwa’s! The Monodyne blades are a work of art. I’ve heard Tiger used these for a while in his early days. If true, it’s about the only thing we have in common dammit. I just picked up a set in great condition and they are the bomb! Hit two pins with the short irons in the first week and had not touched a pin with the PingEye2’s in years. Go figure.

Loved the two posts about the Daiwa blades. I just put a set of MonoDyne DG-8301 irons back in my bag. I’ve read on the web, that Tiger used the DG-273’s around 1992.

We will have to change the list to be named “irons” not “blades”. But besides that…we chose 35 irons we liked at MGS. Everyone has there favs…and these are 35 of ours. There are 100’s of great blade and CB designs out there. But thanks for your choices….and…remember we didn’t name this 35 “classic” irons ;) But if we did then maybe we would have included some of your choices.

Fair enough. However, although the Wilson FG17 are a classic and not a modern blade, they are still “kick ass” looking. Clean and sleek with a thin topline and beautiful toe design. Do yourself a favour and have a look at these beauties!

Nice list but what’s with all the cavity backs!! They aren’t BLADES!!! And what about Wlison, they along with Macgregor have made some of the best blades in history. This is a serious oversight! How about the fg17 or the 84-86 staff fluid feel. Or fg51. I can’t believe you have all these modern cavity backs (however good they are) and have ignored some of the classics. The J33 cbs you showed aren’t even the J33Bs, which are a nice looking blade.

A little slow responding….sorry, work and all. I’m currently playing J33 Combo’s and love them. Can’t see changing anytime soon. I played the MP14’s, KZG ZO’s, and MacGregor Muirfields. Muirfields had the sweetest soft feel but not the most forgiving. 14’s and ZO’s are still some of the best performing blades in my opinion. Playing once a month doesn’t support Blades however, hence the Combo’s.

great work guys, only wish i could find half of these sets on ebay!! makes a change to see only a couple of sets from the big boys which rule the market, mass produced, bring a set out every 2 weeks…..ps .love the japanese clubs!
