2017 GOLF CLUB CLEANERS BUYER’S GUIDE

Do you use a towel and a tee to clean your clubs? Or, maybe a wire brush from your local Lowes or Home Depot? Not surprisingly, many golfers do.

If the results of this Buyer’s Guide are any indication, then you should make a change. A good brush not only makes cleaning your clubs easier, you’ll do a much better job, and you’ll be more likely to spin wedges back like the pros. Who doesn’t want to do that?

We’re Here to Help

The process of buying anything in today’s time has become stressful and time-consuming. We feel the best reviews are those that help you make the right choices and help you get the most out of your time and money. This way you can buy with confidence and eliminate a lot of the guesswork. We are here to help show you how a product will perform before you buy.

One key to our testing protocols is that we test products head-to-head. We select the top products from each category and put them through extensive and detailed head-to-head testing. We test both in the lab and in the field. We score each product across a range of weighted categories. We then rank the products, explain why products finished where they did, and give awards to the best-performing products in the category.

Club cleaner scoring centered around how well the brush did its job. As you’d expect, the ability for the cleaner to clean was the most important factor in the scoring. We also considered the ease of use, size of the cleaner, and its durability.

THE METRICS

We’re always fine-tuning the process to make sure we’re collecting the best data possible. Continuing that trend we’ve updated and refined this year’s analysis to bring you the best buying advice possible.

We put in hours of testing time, utilizing data-driven protocols to test new criteria. The metrics and attention to detail are better than ever.

The most important factor in terms of club cleaners is their ability to clean. Because of this, our testing centered around the cleaning ability of the products tested. We also noted the weight and size of the submissions. Then we took the dirtiest set of clubs we could find and got to work cleaning.

We asked our testers to rate the ease of cleaning with each product, we also asked specific questions about the durability of the club cleaners tested.

Cleaning Ability (40 points) – How well does the club cleaner do its job? Does it offer both a brush and groove cleaner? Does it offer different types of brushes? Over the course of testing, we found that there are many ways to clean clubs. The best performers in this category offer versatility. Not only to they provided multiple useful ways to clean the clubs, but they’re also easier to use. Enhancements include electric brushes, groove cleaners, and detergent containers. The worst club cleaners provided little more cleaning power than what you’d get with a tee and a towel.

Ease of Use (30 points) – Straight from the package, how easy is it to clean your clubs? Testers ere allowed to read the product’s instructions before the test began. Points were not deducted if a product needed to be charged, or required detergent to be added prior to use.

Durability (20 points) – Most club cleaners cost less than $10, but there’s little value if you have to replace your brush every month. The top finishers in the category should outlast the average brush. Poor products in this category likely won’t last very long at all.

Size (10 points) – We determined both the weight and volume of the club cleaner. While most golfers simply clip their club cleaner to their bag, a bulky brush can be annoying. The best performers in this category were small and simply clipped easily the bag. The poorer performers were bulky and lacked a fastening mechanism. This means that these club cleaners must be stored in the bag as opposed to attached to the side.

Final grades were awarded based on total scores. Best Overall is our highest overall scoring club cleaner, and awards are given to the top three submissions. Also, more specific Best in Class recognitions are awarded to club cleaners in certain categories (like durability, ease of use, and cleaning ability) that push the industry’s design envelope.

We also give an “Editor’s Choice” and a “Best Buy” award to those products that provide value products that compete with the bigger names on performance.

      I’m surprised a Ping or Srixon brush didn’t win…

Great review guys. Right now I use a towel, been looking for a brush that won’t scratch up my clubs.

I use a wet towel during my round and an Oral B tooth brush when I get home. This keeps my clubs looking like new.

I checked it wasn’t April 1st when I saw the article. I’ve made 35 years plus in the game without one. Don’t think I’m leave shots out there for lack of a brush.

I just bought the frogger, love it. I did buy separate retraction device. Worth money, one that came with it is POS.

I use a small micro fibre cloth which I wet at the beginning of the round and wipe my irons after every shot – grooves immaculate and no need to brush; came in a pack of 10 for $4 from Target. Got the idea after seeing a pro’s caddy wet the end of the towel on the staff bag

Wish they had a cleaner than can retract the metal brush so that it wouldn’t snag clothes and prick fingers.

I have a little pocket brush with retractable brushes one wire one nylon with a retractable groove cleaner… size of a zippo lighter… always there when you want it. Been using these for 20 years, would never go back to a brush attached to my golf bag.

Have been using the same Frogger brush since 2013. Have only replaced the bristles three times since then and I play over 50 rounds a year/clean my club after almost every shot. Should only ever use the nylon bristles and really the nylon is all you need if you clean your clubs after every shot or at least every round. I play MP-59s and know that the metal bristles will in fact scratch the finish…stick with nylon!!!

Get a club glove towel, get half of it soaking wet before your round and keep half dry. This, paired with the Frogger brush is all you ever need to keep your clubs performing as intended and looking absolutely mint.

I coach a high school golf team, and some of my players play with so much grime caked up on their clubs I think it actually changes their swing weights!!! Drives me crazy seeing dirty clubs.

Once you master attaching the Frogger to your bag it’s all down hill from there. Had mine for years and not only cleans great it is very durable.

Thanks for publishing this review. Interested in the Lowe’s brush. Just curious what they had to say, because I use a dollar brass brush that I bought from Daiso.

I have used Frogger brushes for years…always replace the brass brush for the nylon…my only issue is the clip….every single one I’ve had has broken and I have to keep it in a zipped pocket but overall a comfortable brush to use

My wife and I have had our Frogger brushes for 2 years and have never had a problem with them! They are great for a quick clean on the course!

I swear some people just think there are grooves on golf clubs simply for a decorative touch. Clean your clubs people!!

The Frogger’s are great brushes, we sell them at our course, but we buy brass brushes at Home Depot for a little over a buck to clean our members clubs in the bag room and they work great.

I second this! just like alignment rods, which can be bought a home depot for a fraction of the cost. while you’re at it, buy yourself a bbq grill brush, I keep one in the trunk just to clean the bottom of my shoe after.

Won’t the brass brushes gradually remove the chrome plating from forged heads?

      Reply

      Jeff

Yes they will and they scratch the heads but they clean the grooves faster. IMO if there is a lot of dirt in the grooves just score them a few times with a golf tee and clean with a wet towel, no brush needed. The brass brushes are better if you don’t care about scratches and they do the job faster. They are better for clubs that don’t have a chrome finish, also don’t use brass brushes on woods unless you do so extremely gently! It also helps to soak your clubs in hot soapy water for half an hour before cleaning but I realize you cant do this out on the course lol.

Will the metal groove cleaner on these cleaners damage forged irons?

I’m super ocd when it comes to clean grooves, never had an issue with my forged irons. You’ll probably get from damage from bag clatter.

I’ve always thought you aren’t supposed to use metal brushes for your irons at any point. Is there any opinion regarding the effect on the grooves when using the bronze/nylon combination?

Brass bristles won’t scratch your irons as the brass is softer than the steel in your clubs.
