2020 Golf Net Buyer’s Guide

PLEASE NOTE: Due to increased demand stemming from COVID-19, we were not able to obtain some popular hitting nets for this guide on the best golf nets for 2020. We will update this guide as more models become available.

They say practice makes perfect. Right now, many of us have plenty of time for practice but access to the range is limited. So, as we did with putting mats, we put together an emergency guide to help you find the best golf nets for 2020. Not only will a hitting net help you maintain your game during quarantine but it will also give you another practice option once things return to normal.

The nets we tested offer features like ball returners and sound dampers. Some models were easier to set up and use than others. The right net will offer the ideal combination of features for the practice space you have available.

Whether you’re looking to buy a hitting net today, buying advice to get started or just want a closer look at what’s on the market, this guide will help you find the right gear to fit your needs.

CrocBox - A Unique Semi-Permanent Solution

CrocBox - A Unique Semi-Permanent Solution

For those looking to create a semi-permanent outdoor practice space, the CrocBox Golf Hitting Net offers a unique solution. It's designed to be installed underground. At 70 pounds, it's an absolute beast (not the least bit portable) and it takes some work to install. The initial setup requires both time and effort (digging), but once it's installed, popping the net out of its sub-terranean box takes seconds, allowing you to start practicing in no time at all. Side netting add-ons, as well as replacement netting, are available. Word of warning, the metal frame isn't padded on the hitting side, which can sometimes be an issue.

It's the Wedge, Not the Driver

While many assume that it's the higher speed of the driver that puts the most strain on a hitting net, it's actually the greater spin produced by higher lofted clubs that will slowly chew through the netting. If you plan to hit a significant number of wedge shots, consider a net that includes a nylon or fabric target to protect the netting. For added insurance, practice with a new scuff-free ball.

Features That Matter To You

Ease of Use

If you only have an hour to squeeze in a practice session, you don’t want a net that requires 20 minutes to set up and another 20 to take down. If you’re looking to maximize every moment of practice time, you may want to sacrifice features for efficiency.

Size

Whether indoors or out, size matters. While there is some logic in buying the biggest net possible, if you’re working in a limited space, a 10-foot by 10-foot net may not be practical or even viable. If space is an issue, measure first, choose a compact feature-rich net and be sure to allow for a couple of extra feet behind the net.

Durability

There are several elements that make a more durable net but everything begins with the supporting structure and net itself. The strongest structures can hold up to the fastest swing speeds and won’t disintegrate if hit by a wayward shot. The frames for most hitting nets are made from either aluminum or fiberglass and should resist rust and corrosion. When the net itself is too thin or flimsy, it won’t be long before balls start flying straight through.

Stability

Stability is another factor that makes for a quality hitting net. The best golf nets for 2020 not only stay in place shot after shot but they should be able to withstand a reasonable amount of wind. In windy conditions, we found that single-piece nets can produce something of a trampoline effect, causing the ball to spring back at you at greater speed (and distance). That same design can also act as a wall, putting additional strain on the frame. With enough wind, these same designs can become airborne. Traditional net designs with large holes and less fabric allow air to pass through. These designs are more stable in the wind. Many of the models tested can be staked to the ground for greater stability.

Spornia SPG-7 - Fastest Set Up

Spornia SPG-7 - Fastest Set Up

The Spornia SPG-7 spring to life system opens at the touch of a button allowing you to start practicing within seconds. Its sturdy structure maintains stability even at higher swing speeds and returns the ball at a comfortable speed. Add-ons like a side net to catch those occasional wayward shots will increase the functionality.

EXPERT TIP - Reducing the Risk of Damage

If you are a beginning golfer or your hitting space is in close proximity to things that can be easily damaged, we suggest practicing with foam balls to minimize the risk from stray shots. Once your more comfortable in the environment, step up to real golf balls.

More Tips

  • Unless you’re practicing outdoors with plenty of grass to destroy, consider purchasing a hitting mat as well. It won’t be long before you’ve ripped up the grass in your hitting area.
  • If your practice area is outdoors and the ground is too firm for stakes, use weighted objects that hold the structure in place.
  • Practice like you play. When hitting into the net, you want to carry out your same pre-shot routine to ensure better muscle and mind memory.
  • Set up your practice net in a safe spot with extra room behind to ensure your golf ball doesn’t hit whatever is behind it.
  • Before purchasing a net, take the time to research what accessories and replacement parts are available. Some companies don’t make replacement parts, which means if anything breaks, you’ll need to replace the entire net.

EXPERT TIP - Distance From Net Is Important

Depending on what ball return net you choose, along with weather conditions, can determine how fast the ball comes back at you. So don't swing too close otherwise you might get a ball to the body.

Best Golf Nets for 2020 – FAQ

Q: How far should I set up away from the mat?

A: A good rule of thumb is that the larger the net, the farther back you can hit from. For a smaller net, your hitting area will need to be closer. The net itself is also a consideration. The tighter the net is, the faster the ball will come back at you. The ideal amount of rebound will return the ball to your feet at a safe and comfortable speed.

Q: Should I get a net with sides attached?

A: All golfers hit bad shots, so consider add-on options to contain those wayward shots. We strongly recommend choosing a net that offers side nets that extend closer to the hitting area. They can reduce damage and danger should the dreaded “S” word makes an appearance.

Q: Can I use my golf net for other sports??

A: Some of the best golf nets for 2020 can be used for baseball, football, and many other sports. We advise referring to the manufacturer to determine if your net is suitable for other sports.

I would stay away from the Amazon Basics net if at all possible. My first one got a hole in it after about 3 months of use. They replaced it with a new one, which also got a hole within a few months of use. If I didn’t have a backup net behind it, there could have been some serious garage (or car, or body) damage.

Spornia net is great, quiet, returns balls, easy setup. I have a low end sim and hit around 650 balls a week into the net. After hitting maybe 20,000 balls it developed a small hole. I contacted them and they sent me a repair kit for free. Patched it and all is good again. Great service.

If I had the bread (& the space), one w/b on my property tomorrow. Even having the money, my over-riding concern would be, is this piece of equipment going to last, say, 10 years w/ steady use? If that’s a “yes”, then I’ realistically spending $70 a year (that’s what, 2-3 cases of craft beer!).. Anything that expensive is an investment, not a mere purchase, that’s why the durability factor w/b so important to me.

I’ve had nets like the Spornia – too damn loud. Neighbors come outside to see what all the noise is. So, I ended up going with Rukket’s 10×7 Haack Golf Net, which looks exactly like the ‘Amazon Basics Golf Net’ that was the Best Value. I’ve hit a ton of balls into this net with my SkyTrak and it holds up fantastic! The Amazon net is now showing sold out, but never fear – it looks like whomever makes this net does so for several companies, as EpicSports.com sells it for $85.99, so does ssww.com for $99.
I like that the ball kicks back towards to me after hitting it so I don’t have to keep stopping and picking up the balls out of the bottom of the net. The extra-wide 10′ net does a good job of catching those occasional wild shots too! Definitely recommend this set-up. BTW, if you do somehow wear out the net, Rukket sells the replacement under $50 and the hardware all has a lifetime warranty. Can’t lose with that deal!!
Finally, no I don’t work for or affiliated with Rukket, just was really happy with this quality net.

As many may have noticed golf nets are in tight supply. Have you got an old blanket? A clothesline or anything to hang the blanket from? It ain’t perfect but hey if you can’t hit a blanket from 10ft you’ve got bigger issues. Git’r done!

Having built and used an outdoor setup for years, I would suggest that none of these is all that good — and I researched or used almost all of them. They’re fine I guess if the goal is to set up and put back down, but if that is the goal then the winner isn’t really the best option (IMHO).

If the goal is permanence and you have even some minimal amount of space, then a 10 foot wide and 10 foot high cage with outdoor netting is best. What gets people is depth (people think you need something deep like a baseball batting cage), but my experience suggests you only really need about 5 feet of depth to “catch” the ball.

With any build that you plan on leaving outside, you’d better anchor it. If not your hitting net becomes a sail that is now flying towards your house in high winds. Stakes and sand bags aren’t enough. Don’t ask me how I know that. ;-)

I bought the home version of the Net Return two weeks ago. This is the slightly narrower and cheaper version of the winner here. It was delivered to England within a week.

I cannot praise Net Return enough for their swift service. The net is amazing. It is sturdy, quiet and beautifully made. It’ll clearly last for years and Net Return sell parts so I see this as a long term investment alongside a mat and SkyTrak. I now have an outdoor sim.

Before getting the Net Return, I wasted money on one of those tent-like nets that you can get on Amazon. Because of the virus it was expensive. It was also useless. The net bent double with each shot. It clear would struggle to last the lockdown.

So whilst not cheap, I agree that the Net Return is amazing and a worthy winner here. Built to last and chucks the ball back to you – unless you hook the ball as I do when it rolls it past me on the left… can’t win them all.

      Brian,

I have had this particular net from Rukkett for years and I love it! Your question on the distance is going to be determined by the club you’re using. I don’t hit anything lower than a pitch wedge into it. I also used foam balls until I found the distance I needed. If I had to guess, I would say approximately 8-10 feet away and you should be ok. Also, I use mine outdoors with a hiting mat. Hope this helps.

Although I generally seem to have the worst timing ever, I bought a Rukket RukkNet Pop Up Net during a pre-Christmas sale figuring that I would get some practice in before our Winter golf trip. I didn’t realize how much use this net would get. I love it! It opens up almost too quickly if you’re not careful, but also folds up easily and tucks back inside it’s relatively small carrying sack. I wanted something mainly for my garage in the winter that would be easy to use and this net has been great. Too bad you couldn’t review them, but hopefully next year.

I purchased the Maxfli 9′ x 8′ net from Dick’s Sporting goods, $125, and so far so good. I like the bigger size to insure any errant shots don’t end up through my neighbors window. Easy to set up although you may need a second person to help with attaching the net at top. Stands up well in the wind. Had gusts up to 40 mph and it was fine. Comes with ground stakes and a hitting target. So far I give it a thumbs up.

Most of the cheeped nets problems are the netting not able to withstand hitting with real balls at full swings. The problem I would have is I don’t have a large enough area that’s flat that I am not facing windows. What ever one I purchase I will probably cover the back of the net with fabric or one of my blue tarps.

I have been using a net and mat in the yard for several years. I really feel unless you go with the high end one (not even sure that wont eventually wear out) that you need to buy an additional net to put behind the one that comes with your model. That will protect you from the 6 iron shot breaking through, which happens. That being said skillz quickster is my go to. The ones that require you connect small metal tubes are not as good. The skillz is ready to assemble and only has 4 big pieces.

Glad to see the Spornia net do so well in the results. It is the net I use. Having said that, my garage height only allows for me to hit irons but I love the fact that the balls are returned each time. The only thing that stops the ball from coming back to my feet is the thickness of the mat I play with. I do have to say that personally it takes me a couple of minutes to setup and maybe 15 minutes to take down and fold up the first time I used the Spornia net. After watching a couple of online videos, I can now have the net folded properly and placed in the bag in a matter of 2 minutes or less. The only only only downfall for me is the grommets (if that is the correct word) are getting rusty and I imagine that might become the weak point to where I will need to buy another net.

Bummed to see none of the Rukket nets included, but understand why – COVID-19 sucks… Anyway, I’d be curious to see in a future test if the Rukket Haack Net would best your 2nd or 3rd place finishers in this test. It’s somewhat similar in design to the Amazon Basics net, but definitely more sturdy. If space and price aren’t significant factors it’s hard to argue your #1 pick. The Net Return Pro is something I’ve wanted for many years now. Thanks for all the additional testing and content guys!

I’ve been using this Rukket net for three years now, in Skokie IL, on my driveway 12 months a year (because I don’t have any 10′ ceilings) and it performs flawlessly. Literally takes seconds to set up and take down. They sell a replacement net for it and I replaced the original two weeks ago. And not even a mention? Really?
