2017 PUSH CART BUYER’S GUIDE

While push carts have steadily grown in popularity, for some there’s still a stigma attached to their use. Golfers may make snarky comments about them (see the responses to our June 15th tweet), but we’re confident in saying that the purists with the clubs strapped to their backs have this one wrong. Scientists and nutritionists alike extoll the benefits of using a push cart over carrying or riding. Perhaps that’s why, despite grumbling from the back in my day guys, push cart use is on the rise in college golf. Push carts on TV? Oh the self-righteous indignant horror

We’re Here to Help

The process of buying anything in today’s time has become stressful and time-consuming. We feel the best reviews are those that help you make the right choices and help you get the most out of your time and money. This way you can buy with confidence and eliminate a lot of the guesswork. We are here to help show you how a product will perform before you buy.

One key to our testing protocols is that we test products head-to-head. We select the top products from each category and put them through extensive and detailed head-to-head testing. We test both in the lab and in the field. We score each product across a range of weighted categories. We then rank the products, explain why products finished where they did, and give awards to the best-performing products in the category.

THE METRICS

The modern push cart is miles above those rickety ones from twenty years ago. Our testing focused on the maneuverability of the cart, but we also considered its durability, stability, and the folded footprint.

We’re always fine-tuning the process to make sure we’re collecting the best data possible. Continuing that trend we’ve updated and refined this year’s analysis to bring you the best buying advice possible.

We put in hours of testing utilizing data-driven protocols to test new metrics. The metrics and attention to detail are better than ever.

For push cart testing we set out to best replicate the stresses put on a cart during a round. Carts were loaded with a variety of bags each containing the same things. Inside the bags were 14 clubs, 4 gloves, 1 rangefinder, 1 set of rain gear, tees, and 1 box of golf balls. Testing included, but wasn’t limited to, evaluating the brakes, stability, handling, and maneuverability of the carts on the course.

Notes were taken on the durability of the carts as well as their available features and folded size.

Maneuverability (35 points) – Does the cart move effortlessly or does it take some effort to be push? Does it turn easily without lifting the front wheel(s) off the ground? We found that three-wheel carts are generally more maneuverable than four-wheel models. Four-wheel carts often require testers to lift the front wheels off the ground to complete turns. The top performing three-wheel carts handle exceptionally well. There were no issues with the wheels on grass or concrete, and their turning radii are exceptional

Features (25 points) – Does the cart include a water bottle holder? Ball marker? Extra storage? Umbrella holder? While most carts offer many of the features we just listed, some bring even more to the table. Carts for which the most basic features were omitted performed poorly in the features category.

Durability (20 points) – Will the cart last one season? Two seasons? Five seasons? A quality push cart should last several seasons or more. We examined the quality of the cart’s skeleton in addition to its straps.

Stability (10 points) – How stable is the cart on the golf course. Does it stay upright on uneven terrain? Do the straps hold the bag securely to the cart? The top performers can handle uneven lies like a tour pro while offering straps the fasten securely. Poor performers aren’t well-balanced, tip a bit more easily, and often have straps that are difficult to fasten and sometimes pinch fingers.

Folded Size (10 points) – Quite simply how small of a space does the collapsed cart take up? How quickly does it fold and unfold? We found was that while the majority of carts fold either flat or into a cube shape. We found that the carts that folded flat were more easily stored. These carts are also folded more quickly. The poor performers take up significantly more space, aren’t able to be fully collapsed, and are more difficult to collapse.

Final grades were awarded based on total scores. Best Overall is our highest overall scoring push cart, and awards are given to the top three submissions. Also, more specific Best in Class recognitions are awarded to push carts in certain categories (like maneuverability, durability, and stability) that push the industry’s design envelope.

We also give an “Editor’s Choice” and a “Best Buy” award to those products that provide value products that compete with the bigger names on performance.

I own both the tri-swivel and clicgear. The winner is clicgear pretty much because the tri-swivel tips over a lot for me, especially when its windy and on slopes. if the cart falls over its trash. you really don’t need to swivel the front, your not pushing it the aisles of the mall where you have to make tight turns. swivelling front is pretty useless. i have let my cart go down hill over bumps and stuff and the clicgear doesn’t fall over and is very stable, tri-swivel will fall over. take it from me that owns both, go with clicgear. I have my tri-swivel for my guest or let someone borrow my buggy when someone needs one.

If the terrain has huge elevation changes, i use an electric buggy. you will die using a non power buggy especially if you are pushing it up hill. it feels like i am doing crossfit. electric buggies are very expensive, but honestly worth it if you do play at least once a month. i pretty much play every weekend at the bare minimum.

Apparently the ClicGear ROVIC RV1S cart wasn’t available at the time of testing? I just ordered it from Amazon, $203.00 with tax and free shipping. Has the swivel front-wheel like the #1 rated BagBoy model in this test but folds up much smaller, which lets me fit both my bag and the push cart into the back of my BMW X3 without having to fold down the rear seat like I had to with my older BagBoy push cart. Like the MGS tests indicate, quality and durability of the ClicGear brand seems to be a notch above the BagBoy brand. No experience with the SunMountain brand.

Clicgear best on the market by far. Second to none. Outstanding customer service to back up their products. Do not missing have to pump tires on my old Sun Mountain carts. Like pushing air.

What happened to the Sun Mountain Reflex? Why/How did it lose it’s appeal so fast from previous evaluations?

I game a 2002 Sun Mountain. Pneumatic tires. Couldn’t imagine paying $200 plus or minus to upgrade. Keeping the tires filled is a pain. But I have pushed my buddies clic gear with the hard tires. The Sun Mountain glides through the grass, not nearly the resistance. Liked it so much that for $60 at Play It Again Sports, I bought another Sun Mountain pneumatic tire version for my wife, she loves it.

I’d rather spend the money on buying a new sand wedge every couple of years.

Just like with cars, cart manufacturers needs to ensure that there’s a great cupholder built in.

I’ve been looking to upgrade my earlier version Clicgear (2.0?) to the 3.5. However, Clicgear’s clip-on cup holder isn’t up to snuff (I know I will lose the snap on/removable cupholder very quickly).

I agree! That is one of the reasons I purchased a Bagboy Quad XL last year. It holds a extra large drink and straw with no problem.

I have the Clicgear cart and it is fantastic. It has a wider wheel base than my Sun Mountain, and doesn’t tip over as easily. No flat tires. It has two sizes of cup holders available. One that will hold about any large size drink. As far as losing the holder the clip holds it on the cart tight. You can take it off but it wont fall off.

I had a Clicgear 3.5 and traded it for the 8.0 4 wheel version. It is by far the best I have had. My lady has a bag boy and I had a sun mountain a while ago. Living in Pacific Northwest where it is very hilly and damp to say the least and the swivel wheel does not do as well. Plus stability on the hills is severely lacking. The 8.0 is the only way to go. It folds super easy and works awesome.

Just in time, I am definitely in the market for a new push cart because the last time I golfed 15 minutes before my tee time, the marshall ran over my push cart and broke off one of the wheels…she’s lucky nothing happened to my clubs…anyways back to the carts. We’re you not able to get a Caddytek EZ fold three wheeler to compare? I’m actually looking to getting the Caddytek because it looks sturdy, looks good, and price is great at my local Costco’ s. Wish you had cokmpared it to the others. Great article non the less.

I have the CaddyTek and absolutely love it. Came with cup holder and umbrella holder. I can get it together in 30 seconds from pulling it out of trunk and it is sturdy. Not to mention cost was much better than most. Honestly don’t have a bad word to say about it.

I wouldn’t get the Caddytek EZ fold, it’s worth it to spend a little more. I have one and I use it often but only for its umbrella holder (used often during summer sun and random storms). I have another 10 yr old 3 wheel push cart that I like that much more bc it has rubber air filled wheels (repaired once) and is very light, also light on accessories. Caddytek EZ is significantly harder to push, other than that its a really nice sturdy cart. you can remove the bottom storage.

Apparently they don’t make carts with rubber wheels anymore. My babies got amazing strollers I wish I could turn in to a push carts.
Just jumped on that kickstarter ewheels w/ rovic rv1s combo even though its compatible with caddytek ez. can’t wait to not have to push my cart.

Clicgear cart is still the best in my opinion. I’ve had mine for 3-4 years now and other than a broken strap it’s been remarkably durable and able to handle any terrain. The ability to collapse the cart easily is also a great feature. Don’t see the need for the pivoting front wheel and feel that it would be another thing that could break, especially on uneven terrain. Buy a Clicgear and never worry about it and expect long lasting durability.

One thing I didnt see here that I have found to be important and that is the availability of accessories. I walk and use a push cart exclusively and love my 4 wheel cart but there is no a silability of accessories, in my case a sand bottle holder.

Also a list of the accessories on the various carts would help with selection

You missed perhaps the most important criteria about a push cart… rolling resistance! Bigger wheels are easier to push than smaller ones.

I’m curious how the swivel wheel would manage the rutty terrain at my home course. I could see the wheel binding in a rut and sending me flying. My clicgear handles them just fine.

I want a push cart that will hold my bag as close to vertical as possible. It is maddening to have to push clubs out of the way to get to the club you want when the bag is laying near a 45 degree angle…

Why not include at least one pic of each cart folded up? That would have made this review better. Saying “comparatively large size when folded” really means nothing to me w/o pictures for context. Folded size may not seem that that important, but for those of us with coupes or sedans with smaller trunks, this can be a dealbreaker. You need to be able to carry both your bag and pushcart comfortably in the trunk most of the time.

I miss pneumatic tires on push carts. I have the Clicker 3.5 and I love it, but I wish pneumatic tires were an option. The smoother rolling is worth the hassle of carrying a pump and filling flat tires.
