8 Can’t Missing Putting Trainers

By: Matt Saternus

If you ever get the chance to go to golf equipment mecca (the PGA Show), you will see that one thing this industry does not lack is putting trainers.  From elaborate devices in beautiful packaging to products that were literally created in someone’s garage, everyone seems to think that they have the next big idea in putting.  Yet, in spite of all these training aids, the average golfer is still a rotten putter.  Why?  Well, we could look at the obvious reasons – lack of practice and talent – but I’d prefer to blame it on the fact that most putting trainers are terrible.

To help you wade through the piles of trashy training aids, and hopefully become a better putter, I’ve created this list of the best putting trainers on the market today.  These are all devices that I have tested extensively, used personally, and used in my teaching.  While a couple of them aren’t billed as “putting trainers,” they all share the most important characteristic for a training aid: they give the user clear, accurate feedback.

#1 Trueline Putting Coach

What It Fixes: Line, Speed, Reads, and Path

Simply put, there isn’t a more versatile putting trainer out there: Trueline can help you work on your path, face angle, speed, and reads.  Additionally, it’s compact, easy to use, and effective in every application.  Though it’s not the cheapest trainer on the list, I think your search for a putting trainer should definitely start with the Trueline Putting Coach.

It’s also the putting aid trusted by US Open Champion, Justin Rose, and his coach, David Orr.  So it’s got that going for it.  Which is nice.

#2 Tour Tempo

What It Fixes: Tempo

If you think Tour Tempo is just about the full swing, you’re dead wrong: it can have a near-miraculous impact on putting as well.  The best part?  You don’t have to choose between putting and the full swing: for $25 the Tour Tempo Total Game app includes tones to help improve your skills on the green as well as the ones that get you there.

#3 The Putting Fork

What It Fixes: Line, Reads

The Putting Fork is easily the most demanding putting aid that I’ve ever tested.  Decent players shook their heads in frustration.  An aspiring tour player texted me to ask, “Is getting the ball through there even possible?”  Though it will cause more than its share of headaches, the Putting Fork also causes bad putters to become good ones.  If you can consistently get the ball through the Putting Fork, you know you have control over your line which should translate to more made putts.

Bonus: The price of The Putting Fork has dropped $30 since the original review!

#4 Tour Striker Educator

What It Fixes: Stroke mechanics (wristy-ness)

The Educator is the biggest surprise entry on this list.  When scanning my archives for possible winners, I totally missed the Educator because I (and most others) think of the Educator as a full-swing trainer.  However, as I started thinking about the training aids I actually use in putting lessons, the Educator was very near the top of my list.  No other trainer is as effective at helping students feel how “wristy” their stroke is.  And, much like Tour Tempo, it’s versatile and highly affordable ($30).

#5 Puttist

What It Fixes: Line, Speed

Distance control is king on the greens, yet few putting trainers help you improve your speed.  Puttist is one of the exceptions.  A devilishly tough test of touch disguised as an in-home putting game, Puttist fools you into working on a part of your game that will absolutely impact your scorecard in a positive way.  Though the price places it out of the reach of some golfers, Puttist is unquestionably effective.

#6 The Putting Alley

What It Fixes: Line

The Putting Alley checks off many of the Wish List items I would have if I were dreaming of a putting trainer: usable indoors, no set up, instant feedback, and inexpensive.  The main drawback of The Putting Alley is the lack of versatility: it helps you work on starting line (face control) exclusively.

#7 3Bays GSA PUTT

What It Fixes: Path, Line, Speed

For those that would love to own a SAM Puttlab but don’t have a spare $10,000, 3Bays GSA PUTT is an affordable alternative.  With data on everything from stroke shape to tempo to face angle, all packaged in a user-friendly app, this device can add purpose to carpet putting and a higher degree of precision to work on the green.  One drawback is that the app does not include any built-in instructional information, so some players may struggle to figure out how to change their numbers.

#8 The Can’t Miss

What It Fixes: Line

Possibly the most unorthodox trainer on the list, The Can’t Miss uses precision-made gyroscopes to train your hands to keep the putter face square to your stroke.  For players who prefer learning by feel, this training aid is hard to beat.  While the price tag could be a deal breaker for some, The Can’t Miss does offer a money-back guarantee to anyone who doesn’t think TCM has improved their putting.

I was recently introduced to the Zen Oracle putter trainer which is just being relaunched with new features including a new face called roll wave face. It has a hole in the body in which you place a ball and then line up your stroke. When you complete your stroke the ball in the hole follows through to the ball you have hit showing you are putting down a straight line where you are aiming. It is endorsed by Pete Cowen the top coach to many PGA and European professionals. The latest one will be available at the end of August 2015 and I was fortunate to try the prototype one this week and it is awesome. It has the advantage that it is a proper putter that you then go out on the course with to play. look up Zen Oracle on google for a link

I tried the zen training putter as well and can’t seem to find it in the USA. I live in California. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for me?

I purchased a “Can’t Miss” and it took weeks to get to me. i got the same line that it was in production. When i got it the gyro was off and it worked like s***. I have sent more than five (5) emails to the owners with no reply. This is a product that has potential but the owners are non responsive to their customers as proven by their failure to respond to my problems with their product. The product may be good but the back-up “Guaranty” is worthless so be very careful with these owners they do not back up their guaranty.

You guys should have a look at “the putting stroke teacher” training aid endorsed by Larry Rinker who lead the PGA Tour in putting after working on forearm alignment.
This aid is amazingly simple but extremely effective and provides a realistic feel with ones own putter.

      The Flex Putter

I got the flex putter from this guy out in Vegas. It’s the best putting training devices I’ve used and has helped me soften my hands and control the speed and flow of the greens much better when transitioning back to your original putter. I sit in my office all day playing with the damn thing and after a few weeks I already notice a drastic increase in my short game! Check it out all, you won’t be disappointed – http://flexputter.com

The TCM website doesn’t work and no one answers emails. Not even a contender these days for your honored list, when they don’t respond. How do they run a business? TCM gets a FAIL…. MGS you should delete these guys. Other products are terrific, great reviews.

Great article on a facet of the game we all can improve on! I’d encourage everyone to check out the Core Putting Coach – overlooked in the article, but worth looking in to. Simple to use, concept being the core muscles must be engaged for a solid stroke. Developed by a 30+ year PGA Teaching Professional. It’s helped me immensely…

I’d put my favorite in there. The Butch Harmon Inside and Down the Line putter guide. That IDL putting stroke style has been mentioned by Butch of course and Tiger (even after he left Butch) in several issues of Golf Digest. I’m certain Tiger learned that from Butch during their years together when Tiger putted the lights out in early 2000s, and still maintains that stroke today evidenced by the 2009 article (pre-fall era in his life…). It helped me eliminate flaws that crept up at critical times and made my putting far more stable and reliable, especially on those inside 10 footers that make or break a round. The technique it teaches is natural and excellent.

As the proud owner of both Tour Tempo and The Putting Fork Pro, I have to add another fine instrument to this list: a metal yardstick (~$3.00 at your local hardware store). I have found it to be the perfect alternate trainer to my Putting Fork. It’s perfect for the job: low profile so that it doesn’t alter your setup or stroke (which is why the thinner metal yardstick is preferable to the thicker wooden ones), a single hole on the end in which to sit the ball, and immediate feedback if your stroke is off line. I love the Fork because it is maddeningly strict– I know it is making me better. I keep it at work to serve as a quick exercise to get me out of my office chair. But I keep the yardstick at home to practice on and it works nearly as well. It doesn’t hurt that it capable of serving more than one purpose, unlike most of the way more expensive trainers out there!

I have been using the TCM for the last 3 months and it is incredible. I use it for practise but also as a warm up when possible before a round and my putting stroke just feels super solid and this brings confidence which is key for holing more putts!

Pat Sellers – The putting arc is great as long as you have an arc in your stroke. If one wants a straight back straight through stroke the putting arc is no bueno.

As someone who makes a living teaching putting on the tour, I find it remarkable that you didn’t mention the Putting Arc. It is not even close that it is the most used putting aid on all tours. At any given time I can spot at least 4 arc’s on the putting green. It’s not exciting but it’s the best.

Matt, I concur with your statement about lack of practice. My previous home had a large family room with carpet, I had a putting return cup plugged into the wall and would spend evenings with the family watching tv and rolling putts. Then my average putts per round was less than 30. My current home has no carpet, the practice green is in the garage and I don’t practice as much, hence my putts per round is usually around 32 – 33. I do have an occasionally use the mirror with the side boards for eye line and shoulder line. Side boards irritate me, because I don’t feel like I stray from the line, until I use the side boards. There are a couple of devices you have listed that have piqued my interest, but price prevents me from further investment.
Thanks for the great article, RM
