2017 SPIKED GOLF SHOE BUYER’S GUIDE

Golf shoes are changing, and they’re changing fast. In 2017 golfers demand a shoe not only look good but also provide comfort, right out of the box. It must also provide stability in the right places and be able to handle the harsh conditions encountered on the course throughout the entire season.

The aim of this spiked golf shoe buyer’s guide is to ensure you get the functionality of a spiked shoe with the comfort of your favorite sneaker.

The process of buying anything in today’s time has become stressful and time-consuming. We feel the best reviews are those that help you make the right choices and help you get the most out of your time and money. This way you can buy with confidence and eliminate a lot of the guesswork. We are here to help show you how a product will perform before you buy.

spiked-2017

One key to our testing protocols is that we test products head-to-head. We select the top products from each category and put them through extensive and detailed head-to-head testing. We test both in the lab and in the field. We score each product across a range of weighted categories. We then rank the products, explain why, and give awards to the best performing products in the category.

Our rankings are based on many factors. This includes the stability provided by the shoe throughout the round. The comfort of the shoe a golfer gets straight from the box and during the swing. The ability of the shoe to resist golf course conditions without breaking down. We also consider the style of the shoe, and the overall fit of the shoe all the way from the heel to the toes. In our spiked shoe category, we also looked at the design and functionality of the traction technology.

We put in hours of testing utilizing data-driven protocols to test new metrics. The numbers are better than ever.

Over the course of the test, golfers hit balls while wearing each pair of shoes. There were opportunities for breaks in the test to reduce sweat and limit tester fatigue. We also closely examined each shoe, looking at the insoles, midsoles, outsoles, and undersoles for anything that could limit functionality or comfort.

Stability (20 points) – How much support does the shoe provide throughout the golf swing? Does it stabilize the ankle? If the ankle moves, by how much and in which direction? We also test how far the ball of the foot and toes slide forward and laterally. We find that poor performing shoes allow the foot to move, roll, or slide instead of forcing them to turn. Shoes that performed well have effectively designed heel cups which help lock the ankle into place. These shoes create improved balance by way of the added lower body stability. We also notice shoes with either horizontal patterns and or slicker material on the insole allow the ball of the foot and toes to slide more during the swing.

Comfort (40 points) – Straight from the box do you feel like you can play 9? 18? 36? While many shoes are comfortable while standing or sitting they become uncomfortable when walking long distances. We noticed that some shoes have uncomfortable contouring of their insoles while others had unpliable outsoles. The most comfortable shoes feel light on the feet, yet provided the stability needed during the round.

Elements (15 points) – On the golf course, one faces a variety of different conditions. A quality golf shoe must be able to handle these conditions. From dew to mud to rain a golf shoe must be able to keep your feet safe from the elements. The best shoes in this category have well-designed midsoles, uppers, and outsoles that seal the shoe from the elements.

Style (10 points) – Score is established by considering what we believe the majority of consumers would deem stylish, not whether the individual tester likes the look of the shoe. Survey questions provided to testers were developed to combat any brand-driven favoritism on the part of the individual respondent.

Fit (15 points) – We examined the length, width, ankle entry, toe box, midsection, and heel cup to ensure that each shoe provided a snug and comfortable fit. Shoes that rank poorly in this category caused discomfort stemming from the fit itself. On the other hand, shoes that perform well fit like a glove.

Final grades were awarded based on total scores. Best Overall is our highest overall scoring spiked golf shoe, and awards are given to the top five shoes. Also, more specific Best in Class recognitions are awarded to shoes in certain categories (like fit, comfort, and stability) that push the industry’s design envelope.

We also give an “Editor’s Choice” and a “Best Buy” award to those products that provide value products that compete with the bigger names on performance.

Got a pair of sketchers go golf pro 2 on sale for $90 cdn on seasonal clearance. They are probably the most comfortable shoe i have ever put on right out of the box. We do get a little rain here in the Pacific Northwest and so far they are as water tight as a frogs ass.(this is a good thing) . My previous Adidas shoes were a little wide for me but the build was great ad they have lasted very well. Shoe fit does seem to very from brand to brand so when i find one that fits well i often will immediately buy acouple pair of the the exact same shoe just in case the manufacturer changes their sizing model.

Still cannot take Sketchers seriously whilst they continue to copy other manufacturers designs. Walk past my local Sketchers store and you will see imitation Boost, imitation Stan Smith’s, imitation Free’s etc

I trust this review and bought Sckechers Go Golf Pro 2.
This is one of the most comfortable golf shoes.
I’m using Adidas Tour 360 with BOA, this is much better than 360.

I ordered a pair of the Sketchers Go Golf Pro 2 based on this recommendation. I’m excited to try them. Unfortunately Sketchers don’t stock them at their stores here or on their Australian online store, but I did find them at one Australian online golf store, but they wanted $250 AUD.

I ended up ordering a pair of the black/silver color via Amazon and even with shipping from the States, I was able to get them for $137 AUD ($98 USD). And that’s an absolute bargain!

I’ll be sure to post my thoughts in the forum after I get them.

Vet been wearing sketchers for a few years now, and have always thought they were way more comfy than the rest.
But my last pair cost me $150, at the Sketchers outlet store,
So either you have bad info on your pricing, or I got suckered..

I suspect that their prices are a bit off, or at least different than shopping at your local golf shop. I looked up the prices of the top 5 shoes, and they were all higher priced at Golf Galaxy online than listed here on this page. Rounding up a penny or two, here’s the prices of Golf Galaxy: Skechers is $135 to $150. Under Armour Spieth One is $170. Adidas Tour 360 Boost is $170. The Footjoy Hyperflex II is very close, just two bucks more than listed here. Nike Lunar Command 2 is $135 with laces and $155 with BOA.
Now MGS listed prices might be the lowest prices they were able to find on the internet. Personally, I like to try on a pair of shoes prior to purchasing them.

Tony, you are so right about the unfortunate placement of the logo on the Sketchers Go Golf Pro 2’s. Naturally, the optimum placement is inside of the shoe – hidden from sight, where it belongs, but unfortunately we continue to be in the throes of a cultural devolution where the manufacturers of sporting apparel view their paying customers as nothing more than poor, unfortunate schmucks who are more than willing to pay, and often pay a premium, to be their indentured sign-board carriers.

Unfortunately, this current cultural devolution is all but inescapable, so I have a couple of questions for you and anyone else who wishes to provide sound guidance on the matter :

      1. Do we look more ridiculous when all of our sportswear logos match or when they don’t all match?

      2. And since we are the ones who are actually paying for this apparel, how many of these unfortunate logos should we allow to be plastered all over our bodies? Is one enough? Is seven too many?

It’s been mentioned before but it is worth reiterating. Very few of these shoes are available in large sizes and wide widths. Evidently, the golf industry has decided that golfers with wide feet can just cram into a D width shoe. This is very aggravating as I am an avid golfer who happens to wear a size 14 4E.

I am totally with you on that. Finding wide shoes in a style that I like is difficult. The only shoe company that I have had an easy time with is Truelinksware, they have a nice wide toebox and are very comfy. Nike, Addidas, even Sketchers don’t seem to fit a wide foot very easily.

I’m sure there wonderful shoes if you can get them to fit. But if you click on the hyperlink to purchase roughly 20% of the reviewers say the shoe fits either somewhat small or too small and it doesn’t come in wide. That’s the problem with Adidas, Ecco and a lot of the Euro cut shoes. Many US purchasers cannot rely on the converted sizing to order a confident fit. Again, not taking anything away from the shoe as it is obviously a great shoe. But if a large percentage of US golfers can’t get a pair to properly fit them it should be a consideration in awarding “Best” Spiked (or for that matter Spikeless golf shoe

Shop with a golf retailer in person. They will know their shoes inside, and out.

I’d love to shop with a retailer in person for golf shoes but let’s get real. What are the odds that any retailer is going to have my size or anybody’s size in a wide selection of styles and prices. Probably the biggest boost to on line sales is the popularity of on line shoe options with free returns. I mean let’s assume one was an 111/2 2E looking for golf shoes. Who in their right mind would advise that person to start by going from retail store to retail store to see what he could find in stock?

Questions for MGS re: the Nike Lunar Commands…

      (1) Did you get an opportunity to test the BOA version, and if so, how did that rank alongside the laced version?

      (2) For the weird sound and pinching around the big toe (due to the material), do you feel that’s something that will go away as they break-in, or is it something that’s just an inherent flaw in the shoe that you have to deal with?

      Thanks!

What’s up with the Amazon pricing on the Skechers? The various styles all go from 65 up to 150? Is there really that much difference in demand that the price would fluctuate so much? Really odd. Of course the syle/color options I want are on the high end.

Seems like a lot of these categories are very subjective and would be hard to rank. Fit, comfort, style are all very personalized categories and I’m bound to like something different than someone else. That being said, I’ve worn Puma shoes for a few years now, both spiked and spikeless, and feel they are far and away the most comfortable and stylish stuff on the market. To each his own!

I’m with you. When I switched over from Nike two years ago, the comfort level through 18 (and even 36) was night and day. I get Nike gear on a discount and still would rather pay retail for the Puma stuff.

That said, fit/feel is such a subjective thing that I take these reviews, no matter how thorough, with a grain of salt. It is helpful when going in to try gear out though.

Agreed… in fact, I’d argue that for golf shoes, style is probably the MOST important category in terms of what the public looks for when purchasing. I’m willing to bet that most people would rather wear a shoe that looks great, but is slightly less comfortable or doesn’t fit as well over a shoe that is hideous, but is the most comfortable and best fitting shoe ever.
