bridgestone J40 445 driver review

We have reviewed a lot of equipment over the past few years but this one might be the “Most Shocking MyGolfSpy Review Ever!”  Why?  Well because the Adams 9064LS has ranked as the #1 Driver in our review system for the past 400 Days!…and it just got replaced.  Yes, you read that right…400 Days!  Quite an impressive run to say the least.  We knew one day its reign would come to an end…we just didn’t think it would be today.  The Bridgestone J40 445 Driver now stands alone as the #1 Driver on MyGolfSpy!

Bridgestone J40 (445) Driver Review

(Written By: GolfSpy T) What the hell just happened? Seriously…what just happened?

Those were my exact thoughts as I finished crunching the numbers on our test of Bridgestone’s new J40 driver.  Now I am most certainly not the smartest man in the world, but I’m a fairly observant guy. I’ve been testing, and watching other guys test golf clubs long enough that I’m confident that I know how well (or how poorly) our testers are hitting a given club, even when they don’t have the foggiest idea themselves. But…if you had asked me a mere 20 minutes before I started importing test data into our spreadsheets how the Bridgestone J40 driver performed, I might have said “probably pretty good”. To me probably pretty good means a slightly above average score, but certainly nothing that’s going to get anyone but a brand loyalist fired up. There’s not a chance in the world I would have told you that Bridgestone’s J40 would finish as the single best performing driver, and would have the highest total score of any driver we’ve ever tested.

Nope…I wouldn’t have said that, but now that the numbers have been crunched, that’s EXACTLY what I’m saying.  Seriously, that’s what just happened.

We’ve Picked the Winner of a Bridgestone J40 445 Driver!

Congratulations to Brad K. Your 9.5 degree, 6.0 J40 is on the Way!

  • Tell us your experience with Bridgestone clubs or balls to be entered to win a Bridgestone J40 445 Driver!
  • Or tell us why you should be the winner and get the chance to drive the new #1 Driver reviewed on MyGolfSpy.

The Marketing Angle

Before we get into the meat of this thing, here’s a few quick little things Bridgestone would like you know about the J40:

  • 445cc round shape with tour stability (A smaller 430 cc model is also available).
  • Improved Face Thickness design for additional stability and higher MOI
  • 6-4 titanium construction with thin crown wall section, which, as it almost always does, allows for additional mass to be placed at the perimeter for more forgiveness.
  • Stainless steel weight at heel and short hosel to optimize CG for mid to high launch with low spin.

Yeah, yeah…we’ve all heard the discretionary weight thing before, and there’s certainly a chapter or two here stolen out of a dreadful book titled “How to Market Golf Clubs”, but it is at a minimum refreshing to be totally free of propriety acronyms and buzzwords for a change. Kudos to Bridgestone for keeping it simple.

What is actually interesting (to me anyway) is the 445cc head. While Bridgestone is hardly alone is offering a sub-460 head, what’s somewhat unique is that at 445cc, the driver we tested is the largest in the current lineup. I asked Bridgestone why they chose to move away from the 460cc standard, and here’s what they told me:

“Bridgestone’s research indicates that better players still prefer a head profile that looks smaller than what can be achieved w 460cc. The J40 driver design cues were directly from input we received from our Tour team and some highly skilled ams. Better players (0-15) are the target for the J40 drivers”.

The Specs

Here’s the worst thing I’m going to say about the Bridgestone J40 445 Driver today; It’s available in Right-Handed only. Lefties…I’m sorry. It’ s not that you’re limited to a couple of lofts, or a single flex. You are totally, completely, and absolutely out of luck. Not cool, Bridgestone. Not cool.

Beyond that, the stock shaft is Project X Graphite, which plenty of guys (other than myself) absolutely love.  The J40 Driver can be ordered in 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, and 6.5 flex. And while maybe it’s not the fanciest, high-end grip on the market, given how bad some OEM grips can be, we’re more than happy with a stock offering of GolfPride’s Tour Velvet.

How We Tested

The 6 golfers for whom we collected detailed performance data were asked to hit a series of shots on our 3Track Equipped simulators from aboutGolf.  As usual, testing was done at Tark’s Indoor Golf, a state of the art indoor golf facility located in Saratoga Springs, NY.  Detailed data for each and every shot for which we collected data is now viewable in the interactive portion of this review, which immediately follows the performance. This data serves as the foundation for our final performance score.  Our testers were also asked to provide feedback in each of our subjective categories (looks, sound and feel, forgiveness, and likelihood of purchase).  This information is used as the foundation for our total subjective score.  Testing was done using a mix of 9.5° and 10.5° drivers in 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0 flex.

PERFORMANCE SCORING

Like the Nike VR Limited driver, this test was conducted under our new testing protocols. Full details of our testing and scoring procedures can be found here. The short version is that scores are calculated based on a point system. Points are determined per shot using a formula of distance minus accuracy. Based on previous test results, we’ve assigned each of our six testers a theoretical maximum point value. The percentage of that maximum theoretical score that is achieved by each individual tester represents the individual score for the VR Limited. The total performance score is determined by the average score of the top 5 testers.

Distance & Launch

With the Bridgestone J40 Driver, our testers averaged 247.82 yards of total distance. That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 feet less than the first driver we reviewed under the new system. Of course, when we drop our shortest hitter from the equation, that average distance increases to a staggering 263.74 yards, which is nearly 4 yards longer than the previously reviewed club. Of that 263 yards, 250.54 is pure carry.

Looking at launch conditions we find that our testers posted an average vertical launch angle of 9.17 degrees (9.65 with the lowest hitter removed). Shots climbed to an average height of 33.65 yards, which is remarkably similar to the previously reviewed driver.

“I was kind of shocked by the consistent distance”Tim S.

Accuracy & Spin

While it’s hard not to be impressed with the distance numbers, for me, it’s the accuracy numbers that truly set the Bridgestone J40 445 Driver apart from many of the other drivers we’ve tested over the last couple of years.

When we look at the numbers we see that our testers missed the center line by an average of 14.32 yards. Based on the averages we’ve seen from previous tests results, I’m inclined to suggest to you that the results are exceptional. More impressive still, when we remove our least accurate tester (average miss of  20.70 yards), the group averages drop by another 1.3 yards (13.04).

Now to be sure, we did witness some shots that strayed way off their mark, but, those were more than offset by an unusually high number of shots that finished within single digits of center.

Bridgestone has billed the J40 Driver as an excellent option for those looking to cut back on spin. We all want high launch with low spin right? Looking at the numbers, it turns out that the J40 does indeed prove to generate less spin than many other drivers. Almost certainly the Project X shaft has something to do with that, but we can’t discount the head design either.

On average our testers generated 2868.75 RPM of backspin (that’s a whopping 2.23 RPMs more than the previously reviewed low spin driver). What’s most impressive are the side spin numbers. With an average of 383.85 RPM (368.98 Adjusted), the Bridgestone J40 quite possibly generates less side spin than any driver we’ve ever tested.

Overall Performance

I don’t want to mislead you and suggest that each and everyone of our testers loved the Bridgestone J40. That’s not the case at all. Our senior tester wasn’t a fan for a couple of reasons (smaller head chief among them, and our lowest handicap golfer felt he just didn’t hit it well). That said, our other 4 testers all managed individual scores of between 94.52 and a whopping 97.34. While we’ve had guys in the ~95 range before, we’ve never had 4 of them for the same review, and that perhaps tells most of the story here.

MGS OVERALL PERFORMANCE SCORE: 94.74

The Interactive Data

The charts below show the individual and group averages (black dotted line) for each shot our golfers took during our test of the the Bridgestone J40 445 Driver. If you click on the “J40 445 – Test Range tab, you can see where each shot came to rest on our virtual driving range. Hovering over any point will give you all the details of that particular shot. You can use the filters on the right-hand side to show and hide individual golfer based on handicap and clubhead speed. Clicking on the “J40 445 – Raw Data” tab will show you the individual numbers and group averages for our testers.

SUBJECTIVE SCORING

When it comes to subjective scoring, Bridgestone is basically starting with a clean slate. Yeah, we reviewed their wedges, but wedges are different from woods, and with the exception of those wedges, most, if not all of our testers have never seen, let alone hit, another Bridgestone club.

Looks

The Bridgestone J40 Driver is, from a looks perspective, as simple as they come. The sole is relatively smooth (just a couple of cut-outs – presumably for aerodynamic purposes). As they are on the J40 wedges, graphics are understated. All in all it makes for a very clean, very refined look.

“This driver looks like a sports car. And not the domestic variety. The kind that attracts good looking women to ugly men with bad Hygiene”. – Tim S.

Initially I was inclined to describe the shape as “traditional pear”, but after staring at the club for several minutes, I’m more inclined to label it quasi-traditional. It’s pear, with just the slightest hint of some triangle at the extreme rear of the club head. It’s only there if you stare long enough, and it’s hardly distracting.

The J40 driver is a very basic, somewhat understated, but extremely nice looking golf club.

MGS Looks Score: 96.75

Sound & Feel

This is the most difficult aspect of the Bridgestone J40 to wrap my head around, let alone describe. Generally speaking, I really like the sound and feel of the club. About half of our testers agree with my assessment while the others largely rated it in the average range.

It’s not simply that the club has a muted sound, at impact it makes it feel as if your golf ball is softer than it would otherwise be. It’s definitely not a bad thing, and it’s a feel that, the more I swing this club, the more I really start to enjoy.

While I suspect not everyone will love the way the J40 sounds and feels, I also think there are plenty who will. And even those who don’t will be hard pressed to find enough negative in either to completely rule the club out.

MGS Sound & Feel Score: 86.00

Perceived Forgiveness

Smaller heads can make for interesting results here. Sometimes the enhanced gear effect can be a good thing, and for the most part that held up here. Looking at the range chart we can see that our testers were in fact relatively consistent from a distance perspective (no huge outliers for anyone save our senior tester). And of no surprise, considering the accuracy numbers, left to right dispersion was relatively consistent as well.

The results are impressive enough for two testers to rate the club a 9 in this category, while most others scored it above average for forgiveness.

Tester Perceived Forgiveness Score: 86.00

Likelihood of Purchase

I hate to say our testers completely missed the boat, but clearly some of them did. You would think that when 4 of 6 testers hit the ball better than they have with nearly any other driver we’ve ever tested (certainly the J40 was at least top 3 for most of these guys), LOP would be off the charts. Of course, when you consider that even I was surprised by the final numbers, I guess it’s reasonable to assume that our testers might come away from this not loving the club quite as much as they should.

Truthfully, the 4 who hit the club exceptionally well, scored it very well. Averages were brought down because the guys who didn’t hit it well, generally scored it well below average in the category.

Tester Likelihood of Purchase: 81.97

Looking over the final subjective numbers, I’m in almost total agreement with our testers. The J40 is a great looking driver which, unless you like a lot of flash and flair, should appeal to a majority of golfers. Sound and Feel are excellent, but a bit unusual as well. Forgiveness is very, very good, and although I would suggest the LOP score should be higher than it is, if we were to remove the malcontents from the equation, that particular score would jump over 92.

TOTAL SUBJECTIVE SCORE: 88.82

CONCLUSION

Prior to this review, I could have given you a list of 3 drivers that I think are the best we’ve ever tested. The strange thing is, with each of those other 3, I could see the results coming. Either the numbers were in my face, or the reaction of our testers made it impossible to miss the fact that they were hitting a club, hitting it well, and enjoying every minute of it. In the case of the Bridgestone J40, that didn’t happen. Our testers were certainly curious, and I’d suggest they remain curious about this club even after completing their tests, but there was nothing overt to suggest this club is anything other than pretty good.

And yet here we are. We’ve tested the J40, I’ve pulled the data, I’ve crunched the numbers, and although I never…I mean never saw it coming, the Bridgestone J40 445 now stands alone at the top as the highest scoring driver we’ve ever tested. I am completely shocked.

What’s truly a shame is that Bridgestone clubs aren’t nearly as widely available as at least half a dozen other brands I could name. There’s a very good chance your local big box store, or even your local pro shop (if you’re lucky enough to still have one) actually stocks Bridgestone. Having said that, if you have the opportunity to try the J40, you absolutely must make the most of it.  Hell, you may need to come back and hit it again…and again and again.

You may not believe the results the first time, but when all is said and done you might find yourself saying “The Bridgestone J40 445 is the best performing driver I’ve ever hit”. Yeah…that’s what just happened.

MGS TOTAL SCORE:  94.08

I traded my driver for a putter and have been using another guy’s Bridgestone J driver for about a month. My feelings are almost the same as this review. There is nothing that jumps out about this driver but on reflecting on my rounds I have to admit that it out-performs all other drivers I have used. This is true on controlability, distance, direction and even sound and feel. I haven’t noticed the sound as much, probably because it is not as loud as other drivers and that may be the key to not realizing this driver is pretty darned awesome.

Guys have been playing blades basically my whole life, at least for for 35+ yrs? I have fallen off the wagon and played Eye2s, 845s but I always go back to solid blades. I play to a 5 and am a solid hitter but not long in today’s world (7/155). I came across a set of J33bs and went from light Nippons to S-300s with the bag change. All I can say is that immediately I fell in love and I am still loving them 9 months and many rounds later. These are the best blades I have ever owned. Yes they are legendary Endo forged but I had no clue when I got the irons. Research told me the facts and I guess the irons got even better in the 6 inches between my ears.
This fact may sum it all up. We all know Bridgestone makes tires, and that is their gig. Golf is their hobby. Now nike, titleist, Taylor he’ll everyone else is fighting to secure a markets share of let’s say 100 million/yr. (Which is probably very very high). Bridgestone sells well over a BILLION in tires. That said think of their staff….I read 900 engineers alone. I do not think some major golf companies even have 900 including their country club staff pros!!! So Bridgestone can have a small group of mr smart guys working solely on clubs and they are just part of a giant conglomerate. Think of the design and engineering resources available, such as a Cray computer…
I think the next big deal is that BStone does not need to make up technology to sell clubs. If they break even, great, if they lose money, what percentage of the whole could it possibly be? I think that is why we do not hear much about their sticks and what they change design with little frequency…ie TM evolving several times a year. Now they are pitching balls, but think about it. That is low hanging fruit, especially if you think tires are so close to balls.
Give these guys a chance and as posted get a club or two and try them out, perhaps they may not be for you, but as a decent player and one who has a lot of experience, I think BSTone deserves a chance, you may be surprised, very surprised……..

I’m only 19 but I’ve been golfing for 5 years and I’m a 7 HCP. I love the game but unfortunately college is expensive and I don’t have the funds for a driver like this but it would be a dream. That being said, I have played with Bridgestone balls throughout my high school career and I cannot find anything to complain about. I’ve also been researching the J40 irons and did not find one single complaint. As soon as I find the cash I’m definitely buying this driver!

I play with J40 irons and really I play off -1 and they are the sweetest irons in the world with PXi shafts, Bridgestone make a better product than all I have used and I have used the best blade irons money can buy at 50 years old, But dont forget guys its not about the head of a golf club its the shaft fitted right that makes all the difference. Have Graphite Design shaft DI currently in driver that beats any standard fit driver on market by 30 yard carry,If you want a deep penetrating driver you have to go deep face and J40 looks cool next to Cleveland classic deep face that I have at moment thats front weighted

OK, this may be a little hard to believe but after reading the reviews on the new J40, I just had to share my experience with your e-5s. At 54, I just picked up the game and I am in my 4 season. I have been a 24 handicap on average, until this past June. In June I did two things, #1, put my Driver & 3W in the trunk and #2 committed to only using my 5W and the e-5s. With that said, H.I. History – 6/1/2012 = 27.7, 8/15/2012 = 16.5! Love the feel of the e5s and after reading the reviews on the J40, I think the smaller head of the driver would fit right into my game. My 5W good for 210 – 240 and with the new J40, I think I can continue to drop my handicap. My fellow Club members would love to continue to be giving me less strokes:) Please consider my story to qualify for the J40 contest. Bill McLennan, PA

Bridgestone J40 – GO BUY THIS DRIVER!
I’ve purchased J40, 8.5 degree, 430cc clubhead last weeek and the result is astonishing.
First of all, Pear shape clubhead doesn’t look small as its 430cc unless it’s compared with 460cc clubhead next to it. I’ve used typical range balls and (risked) a sleeve of new Top Flite golf balls on driving range since range balls spins more. Second the ball flight is so straight and no wind uplifting effect. You can tell the ball explodes off from the clubhead like fully compressed spring. Some may call this soft feel. I’m carrying 260 yards splitting fairways. The funny thing is; I can draw it and I always fade even with my draw-bias driver.
This will be my life-time driver forever. Thanks mygolfspy for mentioning Bridgestone otherwise, I would have never noticed. Unfortunately, big stores like “Dicks” or “Golf Smith” do not carry Bridgestone. I couldn’t even find it at local store. I had to order it from Bridgestone dealer which is worth waiting for.

Oh Yea , why should I be the winner and get the chance to drive the new # 1 Driver reviewed on MyGolfSpy . Maybe because I have spent so much money on my childs junior golf getting him to the college ranks that I still use a Taylor Made 510 and I can not describe it as FUN ! You can put some FUN in my life !!! Best Regards –LB–

My son a freshman college golfer painstakingly tested drivers with no regard to name brands, price tags, or tour player endorsements for pay ended up by him choosing the Bridgestone J 40 – 445 driver ! His choice surprised everybody including himself but has turned the heads of many other brand head cover wielding golfers. His coach told me that the 30 plus yards he gained and improved accuracy with the Bridgestone driver has been truly amazing . I asked my son a couple of months after putting the club in the bag what the best word to describe the club was and he answered , “FUN” ! Thanks Bridgestone , best regards LB

I purchased a dozen Bridgestone e6 yellow balls at the beginning of the season. I have played with the same ball since then (10 rounds).
I have never experienced anything like this ball…….
I am a 15 hcp and am 71 years old with a swing speed I think well under 100. Never been tested. The ball is as long or longer than any other ball I have hit. It’s hit cement cart paths. hit trees, been out of bounds in dense woods, in the water (skipped out each time). I asked my Pro if it was time to retire it. “Nope” was the answer. “Play with it as long as it doesn’t get scuffed as this will affect the flight and spin of the ball”. I wash the damn thing in the ball washer each hole and it comes out bright yellow looking like it just came out of the sleeve. Having said these things, I have noticed the white e6 balls one of my friends plays with seem to scuff rather easily as do the Pro V1’s.
My dilema is this. Do I play with this one ball all year (100 or so games) or do I retire it and pull out another one just because…………?
      Yours Sincerely.

Ted, they’re great drivers, no question, but I can’t really recommend them for a lower swing speed player. Not knowing your swing, I can’t say for sure, but generally lower swing speed players need a little help getting the ball in the air (higher lofts), and often need help keeping it there (more spin). The Bridgestone J40 really doesn’t offer either of these things. If you can get your hands on one, it might be worth demoing the 12 degree model, and probably more ideally with a different shaft.

I can’t speak for your, but most of the seniors I encounter (and really golfers of any age) have a pride issue with higher lofted drivers. As we start to put them in our senior tester’s hands we’ve seen his numbers go up. My point is to not discount anything, and whenever possible, work with a reputable fitter to find what works for you. If you love the J40 head, go for it, just make sure you’re able to isolate a shaft that can help you get your numbers close to ideal.

Picked one of these up today off of Ebay. I swore a while ago that nothing would replace my TaylorMade Superfast TP as I hit it further than any other driver I’ve had. Well, that all changed the first time I hit the J40 445. This thing is the real deal…not only do I hit it further, but I hit it MUCH straighter than my previous driver. I’m guessing this is a result of the shorter shaft, as well as the fact that the face is more square than my Superfast TP. My miss generally tends to be to the right. The first time I took this club to the range I hit probably 25 balls with it and only one missed right…and this miss was more of an inadvertent cut/fade than a slice. I have to agree with this review 100%, amazing club, so underrated!

Love Bridgestone equipment, own 3 sets of their irons, including a wonderful set of J33 Blades with project X 6.5’s, my favorite clubs. Have not had the opportunity to try or purchase any of their wood’s, they are not readily available here in Canada. Would love to give this one a try in the 330cc head, currently using a FT Tour with Diamana red 73, great drive but always looking for something better, this could be the one!!!!

I have been rooting for Bridgestone to take a shot at the top brands out there, and this might be the driver to do it. The B330 series plays like the Pro-V, the J33 irons are fantastic, and their wedges perform as well as my Vokeys, It would be great to see another driver that can quiet the R11 and 910 groupies out there.

I played the j38 and it was a great driver. The bridgestone golf balls continue to rank at the top for many golfers. I hope that more places will choose to stock bridgestone products. Those that do play their products should make sure that they provide these stores with their positive feedback and show their support for Bridgestone so that can be passed on to the company to consider.

I bought a set of J33 Cbs and a J33R driver when it wasn’t avaliable in Vancouer, Canada. They were excellent clubs and superbly well made. Unfortunately they were stolen from me and still haven’t found anything that suits me as well as the J33R driver did. I’ll definitely be purchasing the J40 driver, but will be the 430 version.

I do club repair at a nationally known golf store and am familiar with the Bridgestone line of clubs and balls. I consider Bridgestone irons one of the best built iron sets out there and their range of golf balls super. I look forward to seeing J40 445 driver available in our stores soon.

Early on, I was the proud owner of J33R 460 with a Fujikura Rombax 6W06 BT-31 shaft. This was cutting edge when I got it. I was impressed by the low spin rates and great feel it produced, especially as hi spin was something I struggled with.

I went through a long and rigorous Hot Stix driver fitting and trial process that lasted 6+ months before I made my purchase. The final cost of buying the driver and reshafting with the Romabax produced a total cost that was insane. But it was a great driver. I would love to get back into a Bridgestone J40, although my Razr Hawk Tour is pretty sweet.

The J40 would be a welcomed addition to my bag. Fingers Crossed……

Bridgestone makes high quality clubs, the problem is they don’t market the clubs that well and are hard to find and the prices aren’t cheap. The B330 balls are very good and I play them often.

I am starting to really like some of their balls and the entire J40 line looks amazing, I might buy the new wedges and I will definitely look at this driver. Bridgestone may be small but they are starting to really put out some good products.

I wish I could say I’ve tried Bridgestone sticks (god knows have tried them ALL), but alas I cant as they have an aversion to producing for lefties. Just as I’ve tried all clubs, I’ve tried all balls in a search to shave some strokes and I’ve never found a difference. That is until I switched to the Bridgestone E7, what a great pill!! This ball gives me the extra distance I need, great feel off the irons, and super around and on the greens. I no longer have a potpourri of balls in my bag, only E7s.

Oh, so why should I win the driver and especially since I’m a lefty? I’d like to give it to my pops who’s in desperate need of an upgrade and intro’d me to this great game to say thanks.

I never have owned a professional brand-named driver, always used a knockoff. Winning this driver would allow me to see how much better a brand name is (or isn’t), and hopefully increase my driving distance.

Why should I win the Bridgestone driver?!! Well, I’ve used Bridgestone balls, irons and wedges for a number of years, I am a professional, tried to get an equipment sponsorship from Bridgestone, but, since I’m out of the continental US, they can’t help me. Or, at least this what I was told by a rep. I currently use Cleveland equipment, but would gladly change to Bridgestone! I appreciate the dedication to pursuing the very best in quality materials, the designs are simple and conventional, yet, very appealing to the eye, and have excellent feel! I think no matter what, for the upcoming year on the Jamega Tour, I will change my bag completely to Bridgestone, and the driver would be a great start to filling the bag. This is why I should win the driver!

The club looks great & I love that Bridgestone is using Project X shafts in the driver, as well (I love my shafts). I also used a couple dozen Bridgestone B330 Blue Box balls this year. I love the tires so one day I decided to try the ball. I tried and really liked the B-330 Tour S. My swing speed isn’t quite up to getting the most from that ball but it still performed most admirably for me. And then, one day, I decided to swing a friend’s J38 irons. They are blades but they seem to be easier to hit than any blade I tried previously. Bridgestone makes good equipment for golfers who want to be good. The new J40 driver looks becautiful and now we know it tests great. So count me in.

I use j38 DPC irons. Having switched from a pure player’s iron (Nike TW Blades), it’s just pure bliss. It’s fun to hit, really responsive and a lot softer than the Nike blades. Surprisingly, it sounds / feels better on the course and on par on the range. In addition, I have hit extensively with my friends’ MP-53 and AP2; they don’t come close to J38 DPC. At the current price, I’m seriously thinking of buying a back up set.

The new craze will be the smaller drivers because you don’t need 460cc to hit a ball. If you need that much space you must be a hacker. My favorite Bridgestone product includes the e6 golf balls, hoping that the driver is just as good.

I am one of the old school Bridgestone guys, I guess. My memories of Bridgestone go back to a ball that was marketed as their “REXTAR” brand. They had a balata ball that was crazy soft. So much so that I could cut it with a thin drive from a persimmon wood, LOL. I swear, I did it.
I have the J38 CB’s in my bag, next to the J40 Hybrid and 3+ wood. It is stocked with B330 RX-S balls and I have never been happier with a ball in my golfing life of 40+ years. When my new J-40 430 driver shows up, I’ll let you all know what I think and give honest thoughts. It is very nice to see that 12* model in the 445 line up, as well. My daughter does not know it yet, but she is excited for that one, as well.

I play the Bridgestone e6 ball.

I’ve tried Srixon’s Tour offerings which are admittedly far better off the putter, but If it takes me a stroke (or two) over GIR to get there, or my ball spins back completely off the green with my approach shot, does it really matter?

So, I always come back to the e6 as it compensates for my swing flaws and keeps me in play, in the fairway.

The e6 goes and it stops – which is all you can ask of a ball.

Note to Bridgestone, I’ve turned many a golfer on to the E6, the 330 Tour S, and now that I’ve gotten older, the RXS. I haven’t heard one complaint about any of these balls and most of the guys I play with have made the same ball progression as me. I’ve been playing Bridgestone balls for over 12 years. I tried them on a whim and I fell in love with the quality
right from day 1. It seems that every year or so a new Bridgestone ball, or line of balls, is introduced to the market and I get more impressed each time. It’s like they’re reading my mind in terms of what the consumer wants out of a ball. The “E” line is the prime example. And then the 330 Tour line. A ball for everyone. And now, the RX and the RXS. I can’t wait for the next line to try. In my opinion, other companies are trying to keep up with the progression of the Bridgestone technology in the ball market but they’re followers, not leaders. Yes, they’ve tweaked just about each and every ball a little better. That’s a remarkable statement for a company that can just rest on it’s laurals and sell the same old products. Not Bridgestone. You guys are the leaders by far. Thank you for wonderful products.

I have used the orange e6 golf ball, but like the e5 a bit better. great golf ball! never tried any of their clubs, but this driver sounds awesome, and i haven’t been able to retire my TM r7 superquad (even for a new white driver!) so this could be the one!

I have been a fan of the bridgestone driver since the local rep introduced me to them. It is truly a spin killer. I have hit a ton of drivers and the J36 was the first one that didnt have the balloon effect. I did not find another driver until there J38 came out. I made the switch as soon as I hit it. I should receive the new J40 because it is almost impossible for me to get one unless the rep comes to our club.

I have hit the J33 for the last 4+ years with the specific intent of flattening out my ball flight and reducing the spin with remarkable success. Best driver I have ever hit, but it sounds like Bridgestone has made some improvements, and it might be time to upgrade. Can’t wait to demo the J40 and swing away.

Like a lot of the commenters, I’ve never hit any Bridgestone clubs before but I’ve definitely been interested, especially the J series irons. I have played quite a few of their ball variants and have been impressed, especially with the B330-RXS. I might make the switch after I’ve used up/lost the Pentas I have.

I’ve never had the good fortune of hitting Bridgestone clubs, as I’ve not seen them sold locally. I have however, made the switch from Titleist to Bridgestone after a fitting earlier this year. I play the e6! I love it. Its helped straighten out a soft fade I could never correct in my swing, even after changing shafts, heads, weights, etc!

Would love to try out more of what looks like a stellar product line! That is one beautiful driver, I must say, that’s coming from a, albeit former, Titleist loyalist!!

I love that you guys extensively review clubs that some of the more commercial magazines do not. I have had a taylormade R7 Superquad that I have been meaning to replace for a while, and I am definitely going to consider this as an option.

Great review. I have played a couple of demo irons and have a wedge from Bridgestone and really like their products. It is hard to find their clubs anywhere but would rate the ones that I have seen and tried as some of the best! Simple looking and very effective. Fit IT. BOOM IT. Believe IT. Happy Turkeyday.

I wanted to write my thoughts down as to why I should not only win the Bridgestone J40 Driver, but I should be hired by Bridgestone and be made the face of the company and the focus of all marketing.

As a youngster growing up, my father built bridges both large and small. The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the huge Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This gives me a unique perspective on Bridges, a huge part of Bridgestone. Having a working understanding of their construction would go a long in me promoting their product.

I have always admired Stones, so much so I have devoted my life to challenging sport of Stone Watching. Traveling the globe, sneaking up on, searching out, and discovering new species of stones is my passion! There is nothing better than the sun just peaking over the horizon, bundled up with my friends in a gravel pit, watching the quartz catch the first rays of light.

You can see why Bridge-Stone would love a person like me to have their driver, and work for them. Their clubs seem to have a hip, slimming effect which would be perfect for my type of body shape.

I have a face you would love to club, making me the perfect pitch man for their products. My style of plaids, tartans, 70’s and Kilts would accent their balls and mine, as well as their clubs.

Bridgestone if you are watching, don’t let this opportunity pass you by, get in touch my agent, we have a deal to work out.

MGS SHOULD have a contest judged on pure creativity and wackiness. I hit a bridge once, with a 2-iron and an old top-flite, in 40 degree Fahrenheit. Felt it in my hands for a week. Thanks for the laugh John “The Stone” :)

Man I hope my local shop gets these in to demo…
      Love the 330-RX / e6 balls.
I live near a huge shop and they don’t carry the Bridgestone clubs.
Maybe time to look for an online retailer with a solid return policy.

      Hi My GolfSpy
Seeing we live in South Africa we always seem to be the last to even see bridgestone golfing product in our local pro golfing stores. The only products readily available are tyres and if we’re lucky golf balls. If it was’nt for the internet we would not be aware of their well rated products.
Been an ardent golfer who started playing later on in life, I’m always looking for products to improve my game in an endeavour to reduce my h/cap which unfortunately is taking longer than anticipated.
I’d love to win this J40 driver to assist with distance and accuracy off the tee box as well as to show my fellow players that it’s not only the latest name known brands with 460 heads that look like weber kettle braais that really work. Sometimes the older type designs with prooven technology and smaller heads are just as good or even better as in this case.

I’ve played Bridgestone Clubs balls and i have to put them in the same category as Cobra. They are highly underrated and have always use quality forging house to forge their irons ENDO comes to my mind. I’ve played the J33cb’s the J33 blades and even the J33 Driver, which was one of the longest lowest spinning drivers I have ever hit. I just happen to always move on to the next driver or clubs that perform better for me. Now if the J40 driver fits that bill I would love to give it an honest run through against my TM Superfast 2.0. Right now it’s either TM or Callaway as my personal two top performing drivers. But who knows maybe Bridgestone can prove me wrong with their NEWEST offering! Count me in please!

I don’t have any experience with Bridgstone Golf; I would say my knowlegdge extends to knowing who Matt Kuchar is and watching the World Golf Championships (Bridgestone Invitational). I think Matt Kuchar is a world class player who exuberates kindness and consideration. He’s great for the game. Makes me want to trade in my r11 for a J40. Bridgestone needs a stronger marketing campaign.

I have always had interest in Bridgestone club offerings but have never had the opportunity. The Bridgestone ball is tied for my favorite premium ball with the Penta. I will gladly play either ball without hesitation. I am totally interested in waving goodbye to my R9. I don’t need all the bells and whistles that come with the r9 as I play the driver completely neutral. This driver is exactly the type of driver I would be interested in putting in my bag. As a low handicapper, I have to agree that they have marketed this driver correctly to my segment. Exactly what I would be looking for.

I’ve been around golf for awhile but never really had the chance to try out any Bridgestone equipment. In my circle of golf buddies, we seem to stick to Wilson, Macgregor, Taylormade, Cleveland, Ping equipment. Bridgestone seems to have an exotic flair that is slightly out of reach. I have hit their balls though, and have been impressed. Sure, why not?. I’d be a good candidate to take a Bridgestone J40 Driver for a test drive and maybe even convince me to bag one.

When I picked up golf 2 years ago… I was paired with this nice 40 year old guy (11 HCP) during my first tournament. There were 3 of us in that flight: my wife and I as complete beginners and the 11 HCP guy.

He was playing the J38 cavity back irons with no hybrids, no woods, no driver. Being new to golf, I hadn’t heard about the brand Bridgestone… I thought they only made tires! :D

Seeing a 11 HCP walk around with 8 “unknown brand” clubs and hitting them all so perfectly was new for me. From that day on, I had Bridgestone engraved in my head. Which led me to try out the J38 black oxyde wedges (which I couldn’t hit to save my life… but oh boy were they beautiful!) and their whole e series trying to find the perfect ball to fix my slice. I play the B330 now when I can find a good sale and I definitely recommend Bridgestone balls to those who have only heard of ProV1.

Needless to say, that 11 HCP guy was like a mentor to me. Imagine the patience you need when carrying 2 first-timers around a 18 hole tournament. He explained things we didn’t get, gave us tips (although forbidden) about our swing, short game, putting, etc.

I got first place and my wife got second place that tournament (net score) and I never saw the guy again :(

      Hi MGS
I’ve owned J33 Black wedges in the past and absolutely loved their performance. I’ve always liked Bridgetsone balls and find they are very underrated in terms of performance, considering their Seamless Cover Technology.
I would love to win the driver and test its performance at the standard length with the Project X Shaft. Then I would remove the shaft and replace it with something heavier (GD Tour AD or Motore F1 75) to help me shorten the overall length of the club. The reason for this would be to see if I could improve its overall performance.

If this one builds on the J33r platform’s driver, then it’s not real surprising that it’s testing so well. The J33 was a cult classic driver.

Don’t know why it cut it off there. Regardless, I still have an old J33 lying around somewhere in storage. Pair it with a shaft like I did in the Whiteboard, and you’re hitting knuckleballs all day long. I’ve had the J33 irons, and a few of their blades, and Bridgestone/Tourstage has been building solid clubs for a long time. Their forgings are right there on par with Endo, the old Hoffman foundry’s, and Kyoei’s. Don’t know who their forging house is, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it were one of those.

Their forgings are right there with ENDO because ENDO has done Bridgestone’s forgings since the J33’s that I know of and maybe even in some of their earlier lines, and still doing them today! Heck they (ENDO) might have even done their Japanese Tourstage irons as well, but I haven’t played any of those offerings. but that would make sense.

At the beginning of this summer I purchased the Bridgestone J33 driver after hearing great reviews. I was not disappointed in my purchase. In fact, I’ve been hitting more fairways than ever, and my confidence has skyrocketed with this club. I’m definitely considering the J40, although it might take a lot for me to change from its counterpart

I dont really have any experience with any Bridgestone products except for when they did one of those ball fittings. I did no warming up, not a single swing, then proceed to nail the radar instead of the ball, the next shot went straight up and the third went 2 feet above the ground max. Then they tried to fit me to one of their premium balls. I laughed and left.

i purchased a J33 Bridgestone iron set and my game just changed right away. By far the best club i have ever owned. Love the feel and especially love the balance of each clubs. Seriously considering moving to the J40 Driver… Unfortunately Bridgestone is just starting to sell their clubs to the US market. This is the beginning of bridgetone USA dominance…
