The Club Report: Buzelli STA-1 Putter

By Dave Wolfe

A little while back, we took a look at the brand new putter company Buzelli Golf. In case you missed it, we let Ryan Buzelli introduce us to his fledgling putter company, telling us all about his motivation for starting the company and about his putter making dreams. If you missed it, you can read all about it right here.

While we learned a bunch about Ryan Buzelli and Buzelli Golf in that article, one thing was noticeably absent, information about Buzelli golf’s putter. We learned about the man, but not much about his creation. Today we take care of that omission.

Congratulations Matt Lowrey. You have won your very own Buzelli Putter

The Buzelli Golf STA-1

Buzelli Golf-12

There she is in all of her ebony majesty. The STA-1 is the first putter model produced by Buzelli Golf. Now before the just another Anser crowd gets unruly, Ryan Buzelli knew full well that he was making a version of the Anser. Shockingly, he did this on purpose. He wanted something familiar, given that potential customers would not be familiar with the Buzelli Golf name (yet).

I think that this is a solid tactic. The Anser is a familiar shape, and as so it should be seen as a less risky purchase. If the first Buzelli putter was metal madness, it would be all to easy to dismiss it. The large manufacturers sell Anser variants buy the ton, thus giving them the fiscal freedom for more experimental designs like the Futura or Sabertooth. Those shapes would be a huge risk for a one-man-in-his-garage shop.

Those shapes would be a huge risk for a one-man-in-his-garage shop.

The STA-1 is an Anser-style putter, but why would one ever make the same putter that you can already buy? Though Ryan wanted to play it safe with the STA-1, he also wanted to make his putter an interpretation of the Anser, rather than just a pure copy. Here is what he says separates his STA-1 from the others.

What Makes the STA-1 Different from a Typical Anser?

  • Hosel shortened for more connection with your eye to your hands
  • Sole widened for more stability
  • Heel to toe lengthened for more balance
  • Center of gravity enlarged for more consistency
  • New micro deep milled face for feel
  • Biased bottom shelf for added control

Buzelli Golf-05

There is a whole bunch of Anser DNA in this putter, but the differences are noticeable. The tweaks in length and width definitely stand out, while some of the other alterations are more subtle. Let’s take a look at the specs of the STA-1 and then dive a bit deeper.

Specifications: Buzelli STA-1

Material: CNC Milled Carbon Steel Head weight: 355g
Loft: 3°
Lie: 70°
Toe Hang: 4:00
Length: 32.5-37 inches
Dexterity: Right (Left coming in 2015)
Offset: Full-shaft
Grip: Buzelli branded Pure Grip
Shaft: True Temper Stepped – Chrome
Price: $269.95

Impressions: Looks

Buzelli Golf-14

At first glance, we are looking at a very traditional Anser-style putter. Ryan went with a classic design with his first putter, but there are some Buzelli modifications there.

I found the visual effect of the wider sole to be the most appealing. It’s not as wide as an Odyssey #1 Wide or a Cameron Squareback, but it is wider than the typical Anser. That lengthening of the head from heel to toe keeps the putter from looking snub-nosed like the #1 Wide or the Squareback. I find it very visually pleasing at address.

The black finish on the carbon steel head is uniformly applied, and very dark. The white sight line really stands out against this black background. The face milling is deep, and sharp, and the milled lines on the bumpers add a nice touch of cosmetics.

Feel

Buzelli Golf-18

This is one soft feeling putter. I knew it was going to be carbon-steel soft when I rolled it, but I was still surprised a bit at just how soft it was. Perhaps I’ve spent too much time with stainless lately…

Even with the softness, it puts a firm roll on the ball. I chalk this up to the aggressive face milling. Those grooves are deep. There’s no lack of texture on this face. I would love to see how the ball reacts at impact with a super slow-motion camera. You can just feel the face grabbing the surface of the ball and rolling it along. On a wet morning session, the milling also was adept at grabbing all nature of green debris. It’s that deep and sharp.

The putter does feel a bit head heavy, as one might expect with a 355g head on a (as requested) 34.5” putter. It’s not a true hinderance of feel, but to make the STA-1 my gamer, I would probably pull the standard Pure grip and put on something just a touch heavier and/or larger.

Alignment

Buzelli Golf-06

Nothing fancy here. The single sight line complements the squared geometries of the STA-1 head. Perhaps Ryan can add different alignment options, such as top line dots, multiple lines, or no line at all, to future versions. It would look amazing without that line.

Though subtle, you can see in the photo above that the milling on the bumpers also helps to visually square the face at address.

Performance

Buzelli Golf-13

The true test of performance for the Buzelli Golf STA-1 will come in the 2015 Most Wanted Blade Putter competition, but I’ll share with you some of my performance impressions.

The review putter was built to my specs (34.5”, 2° flat) and immediately felt at home in my hands. The putter swings with a very balanced cadence. At no point did I feel the need to manipulate my swing to compensate for imbalances in the head. It opens and closes just like you would expect it too.

Even with the sight line, not my usual preference, I found the STA-1 very easy to aim, with misses being primarily due to distance. Distance control should improve with familiarity and is likely because the head does feel a touch heavier to me.

Fit-For-Stroke

The Buzelli STA-1 putter fits a Slight Arc Stroke

Final Thoughts: Buzelli Putters

Buzelli Golf-07

Ryan has a long road ahead of him if he is going to be able to quit his day job and make putters. I say this not because of the quality of his putter, but because of the competitive nature of the marketplace. If it was just about the putter, I’d say that Ryan would easily be able to use Buzelli Golf to pay his mortgage. It’s a great putter, especially when you consider that it is his first.

$269.95 for a milled carbon putter is not outrageous based upon competitor pricing, but it does put Buzelli Golf into the ring with the big operators. It’s tough for the small guy to carve out market space against such milled  behemoths as Cameron, Bettinardi, and Odyssey. Ryan Buzelli has a great attitude and a pretty fine first putter. Perhaps those are the only weapons that he needs.

It has been a very slow process. Baby steps essentially. I am just a normal guy, living the ultimate dream. A hands-on, trial and error type of person. A no name just trying to outshine these major manufacturers. It will take some time, but I am certain, Buzelli Golf will prevail.

First off, thanks to golfspy for this opportunity. To all the readers: This venture of mine has been one of the most difficult endeavors I have ever faced. Not only the hurdles of putter production, but a no name to emerge is a large task in itself. Your wonderful comments, make doing what I do all worth while. The love of golf is what drives me. For others to share what was created from an idea, to now a putter, is my inspiration. It is my goal to produce high quality products to the end user with endless pride behind it.

My future plans include: a new design early next year, and a left handed STA-1. Even possibly a high end limited series.

The first rendition of the STA-1 was designed safely. I did not feel a out of the box design was a smart first move. Once established, then I feel I can move on to different designs. My love is blades, but there have been many requests for a mallet style, we will just have to wait and see.

I would love to have multiple models designed and produced, but let’s get to step two of my plan before step ten. I believe failure is higher if there is a over stretch of funds and resources.

Once again I thank you all for the great comments. I wish the best of luck to all participants. Any questions or comments, you can always contact me. All emails are answered by me.

      All the best,

      Ryan Buzelli

Currently gaming a Taylor Made TM 880 Pure Roll SU 32″ Long with a Super Stroke Slim 55 grip. If I am fortunate enough to win one of the beautiful Buzzelli STA-1, 32″ in length with a Supper Stroke Slim 55 Grip, with a standard lie and loft. This simply is an amazing looking putter with some incredible craftmanship and would be honored to be a lucky owner. I would take every opportunity of showing it off, especially since I am now retired after 35 years in the Military and spend most of my retirement golfing in Arizona. I say that word of mouth is a great way to advertise and would love the opportunity of being one of your owners that would be very happy to advertise your product for it’s quality and design.
All the best to Ryan and his team in their business and I know with product such as this putter the Buzelli company will thrive.

Beautiful finish on that carbon steel putter. I grew up using putters with similar shape, though they were cheap zinc clubheads chosen from a barrel, costing around five bucks (late1970’s).
The Ping App in the golf store told me I should use a slightly toe weighted putter, which the Buzelli is.
I currently use a few of mallet style putters. Main putter is a Nike OZ-6, which has the widest putter head you’ve probably ever seen, and one of the strangest looking putters out there, but it works well for me. The backup is a TaylorMade Corza Ghost.
Also have an Odyssey Dual Rossie from the very first year they ever came out.

If I won the Buzelli, I’d get it at 34″ length, all other specs standard. Right handed.

My current putter is a Ping Redwood ZB 36″. Long I know but I’m tall. Winn AVS midsize grip.
2 degrees upright. My Ping is stainless and I would love to have a carbon steel putter. Head weight of 350 would be good for me. I can always adjust with grip weight. I have never been married to any one grip as long as it’s a midsize pistol style grip. Love the face on his putter. 3 degrees of loft would be great. Thanks for the contest. A custom built putter would be too cool.

Main gamer is a Cameron Mil-Spec 34/340 w/black studio grip. Florida gamer is a Ping Isoforce Anser ƒ, (stainless head w/copper pixels) at 34/333 w/SuperStroke 1.0 grip.

Must confess the slightly wider sole and sightline with the milled bumpers look perfect… I love the Anser style and plumbers neck, and a bit longer sightline is a good thing by me. With the 355 head and 1 degree up at 34″, that would be one great gamer for the northern public courses I play mostly.

Currently gaming a small mallet Edel which has saved me many, many strokes this past year. This Buzelli reminds me of my Piretti CW, albeit 20 grams lighter and slightly narrower sole. If I were to win one of these putters, I would want it 34 inches long, 71 degree lie and 1 degree loft. I would also love to have three sight lines on the flange I can only hope.

I currently game a Ping A-Blade 36″. About 10 grams of lead tape added to the bottom of the club. I play it with an 18″ Winn grip and putt “Kuchar style.”

I’m looking for a more traditional flat stick these days, this one looks like a beaut! I would play the 32.5″ and wouldn’t change a thing else.

      Hi,
Currently playing a customized Scotty Cameron Circa 62. It’s 36.5″ long and has been counterbalanced. It has an iomic midsize grip built up to a jumbo with tour deep milling and an added sight line. I absolutely love it. Only thing I am contemplating changing is to shorten it a half an inch.
The Buzznelli looks awesome and if I were to order one would definitely get it at 35″ with a larger grip and standard lie/loft. If Ryan can get the right publicity I could see him doing quite well.

Spec would be 32.5 inches one degree flat 3.5 degrees loft if possible with standard bottom line and single dot on top and std grip
I like the look of the standard Buzelli grip.
The larger center of gravity is a very good attribute that is hard to find in some of the anser style putters. My dad thinks I hit too many putts toward the toe so this may help along with the shorter heel.

I am a 13 year old junior player playing regional junior tours throughout the Southeast. My current handicap index is a 6.8. I really want a putter just like the Buzelli.

Currently gaming an Odyssey Black Series #1. I would take one at 34″ and a 340-345g head (not sure if different head weights are available but if not, I’ll take it as it is) and standard lie and loft only because I’ve been dying to own a putter of this quality but sadly will never be able to afford a new one on my own. When it comes to putters for me, I’ve always wanted to get a putter that nobody has or has heard of “yet” and have people ask me about it. It’s a great way to expand your business, word of mouth. Either way, I want to wish Ryan best of luck and don’t give up!!

I’m currently rolling a Odyssey 2 ball BackStryke, with my previous putter being an answer-style Golden Bear. If I were to win this, I would go to the local pro shop to get properly fit for length and lie as my BackStryke is 35″ off the shelf. For my putting set up, I usually align the circles, flatten the sole, then proceed with strokes, so a proper fitting would be essential for this Buzellii soni could get it right. Additionally, the heavier head on the odyssey was beneficial, so the the extra weight on the Buzelli would be key.
The fact that it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship only adds to the sweetness factor.
