Top-Secret Callaway Driver Head?

We got this interesting email the other day…only thing is don’t really know if it is real or not.  When I say real…I don’t mean that I think this is a counterfeit…in this case I am suspicious that this image has been doctored to cover up something about the name of the head.  But other then the “mag” lettering on the head being possibly photoshopped…the rest of the story we think is legit.  And we hope it is for Callaway…because it could mark a major change in the future of driver head design for the coming years.

That’s because if these pictures are real and this thing does actually go in to production it will mark a huge change in the way Callaway makes their FT drivers.  This prototype was supposedly made almost entirely out of Magnesium.

No…Magnesium is not some new high-tech metal and no this is not the first magnesium driver ever to be made. Dick DelaCruz which we wrote an article titled “One Of The Most Important Men In Golf Club Design?” had designed the MagCruzer long before this driver…which is still ahead of its time. (Pictured Below)  This driver was also constructed from Magnesium.  And a few others have used Magnesium over the years as well.  So no it is not a top-secret metal being used only by NASA or the military (but there is some pretty cool stuff that might be coming out soon that is from these industries though that has magnesium in it)…but in this case the metal known as Magnesium might just be “in the right place at the right time”.

So What Is The Big Deal About Magnesium?

Well for one it is a very versatile metal for making golf clubs and is super cheap to produce.  An entire head can be cast in magnesium in the $4-8 range.  Yes…you read that right $4-8 Bucks! Secondly…it is extremely light (about 60% lighter than Titanium).  This is very important…because the average head weighs about 200 grams.  So if you want to have 30 grams of weights to redistribute around the head like almost every other driver has nowadays…your head will needs to start out weighing 170 grams.  This way you have that extra 30 grams to play with.  Which can be done…

But if you really want to be able to move the Center of Gravity (CG) around and be able to allow golfers to move the ball almost anywhere they want then Magnesium is the metal to do it with. And that is why this is such a big deal now with the whole Adjustable Weight Technology that is available.  I actually had a design 10 years ago that incorporated many of these same adjustable weight technologies that are used today but could not be produced because at that time none of the foundries overseas could make a head light enough to allow all the adjustable weight I had incorporated into the design.

But Magnesium changes all that…because an almost all Magnesium head can get the raw head weight down in the 120-140 gram weight range.  Which allows for 60-80 grams of extra weight to play around with.  And that amount of weight can actually allow you to move the ball not only left to right but up and down as well.  So sorry to tell you…but all those 4 and 8 gram weights on your drivers that golf companies have been telling you can supposedly fix your slice or give you that draw you have always been looking for…really is just a bunch of hogwash.

It does have a couple downsides though…for one you typically have to use adhesives to connect it to different types of metal like titanium and when it catches on fire it is about impossible to put out.

The Callaway FT-MAG Driver?

An anonymous source who happened to get a peak at what is allegedly the replacement for the Callaway FT-Tour driver line sent us the pictures you see below.

Not a whole lot of details and specifics about this Super Top-Secret Prototype just yet…but we will give you what we have so far:

  • MAG = stands for Magnesium
  • Head Size 420cc
  • Made almost entirely of Magnesium (75% or so)
  • Production model will be more appealing in the looks category our source said…this is just a prototype

Phil Mickelson Was Allegedly “Blown Away!”

Hard to say if this rumor is true…but the quote we got from our source was the driver was designed to “enable golfers to control and shape shots like nothing on the market today!”  And that Phil Mickelson was “Blown Away! Guess we will just have to wait and see fellow GolfSpies!

to add to my first comment, if it brings the price down for the average golfer, I’m all for that too. I hope the manufacturers don’t keep the prices artificially high and just pocket the excess profits.

I’m excited about the prospects for this new driver. If it does what it claims in terms of moving large masses of weight around the club, it may have huge implications for the average golfer.

Telling people that magnesium is super cheap isn’t a good idea when you charge 400 for a driver, what’s supposed to be the innovation? It’s the same shape as a driver that was replaced 3 years ago.

Looks like play doh around a titanium face.

I agree, I will be checking out the Titleist drivers today. I am thinking of going back to 9.5. Most likely I will change the shaft to fit my swing!!!

Played Forest Dunes, Roscommon, MI yesterday. Golf Mag. has this course #1. Check them out.

the ft tour was a solid stick but im not sure where CALLAWAY is gonna be in 3 years. like i said before they had better scrap that I-MIX mess and get into the FCT game ASAP!!! in an unrelated comment the TITLEIST rep was in today and the 910’s will sell like hotcakes. they have a winner in that machine!!

Actually I like the “HOGWASH” comment about the other performance drivers. I just can not imagine “HOGWASH” ever being used to describe any club product. After all don’t we all have a perfect stroke or swing plane?

So if magnesium is so much cheaper to produce do you think we will see a decrease in the driver prices? I can’t imagine these companies are selling a ton of $400 drivers in this economy!

Wasn’t carbon/graphite crowns (like in the SuMo 5000) supposed to deliver on this as well? Anyway, thanks for letting us know the going rate for Mg- when it rolls out at its $400 price tag, we’ll have a pretty decent understanding of their mark-ups. Oh, wait- it’ll have the “it” shaft (for that particular moment) in it, not to mention all the “R&D” it took to come up with an idea that’s already been done before… what, five times now? But since it’ll say “Callaway”, and Phil was “blown away” by it, it’ll be worth every penny, I’m sure… Wake me up when some ACTUAL innovations come along.

Might have to think about changing the name cause as far as I understand TMAG stands for TaylorMade Adidas Golf. Just a thought.

No, because it technically says “FT-Mag”… just enough of a difference to avoid a lawsuit. Did I mention the face on that thing looks horrible? Just throwing it out there.

The Maltby Tricept Magnesium is a great driver. If they had better asthetics last year (no writing on the crown), I would have bought it rather than the KE4 SSF

That is just a painted X460, nut it could be a test head for a magnesium construction no doubt. I had a Nickent 4dx supermag, which had a magnesium crown, and that was one of he best feeling drivers I’ve ever hit.

Pretty similar to the 460 you are correct but not the exact same. And yes the Nickent was nice but the Magnesium didn’t assist in the feel of that head.

What makes you say that about the SuperMag? It felt much softer than any all titnium head I’ve hit, in fact it was more along the lines of the FT Tour thinking about it.

I meant the face was titanium that and the shape of that head contriubted more to the sound then the small amount of magnesium.

I’m guessing some kind of aluminum alloy (magnelium).
Was only half kidding about the fire starting aspects of it though… it is used as fire starter in some emergency survival kits.
It will definitely be interesting to see what comes out of this. Its a heck of an idea if someone will do the work necessary to bring something like this to mass market. Your write up about the possibilities of weight location transfer are intriguing.

I’ve got a couple questions… 1 – What is the magnesium alloyed with, because magnesium by itself is a very soft, malleable metal and wouldn’t stand up to beating a golf ball very long. 2 – You alluded to being hard to put out if it catches fire. That stuff is used as fire starter… is it going to cause a fire like the one recently reported here on the site? Hope ya never hit a flint rock with it! 3 – Is it going to taste as bad as epsom salts or milk of magnesia?? LOL!!
At about 1/3 (a little more than that but not much) the weight of titanium and a little lover a buck a pound (~ $2900 per metric ton) it definitely has a lot of promise! Can’t wait to see further developments!

Dont have the exact details on what the specific type alloy magnesium they are using. But their are some on the horizon.

Also the fire issue is related to the production aspect of making the club and not the retail drivers.
