Have It Your Way! –  More = Better, For Consumer

I guess you can say Burger King said it best when they said, “When you have it your way, it just (fill in the blank) better”.  And that’s what Callaway is hoping with their second release of what they call the uDesign™. By the way is this still BK’s slogan, seems like it’s the only one people remember and it’s almost 50 years old.  I digress…

Mass Personalization Option For Drivers

Way back in April…(I say way back because in todays golf world 5 months seems like an eternity when it comes to new product releases) Callaway launched the “1st Mass Personalization Option For Drivers” called the uDesign™. And like I said back in April it was only the start of things to come.  The original version of the uDesigngave golfers over 70,000 unique possibilites to customize their big stick.

Well the new version has over 1 trillion (actually, have no idea how many) options for the golfer to choose from…but I know there are a lot.  And, no matter how many there actually are Callaway is thinking that more = better for the consumer.  We wondered if this would be an idea Callaway would simply sweep under the rug or something that they would give the attention it needed to succeed.  Well, I think they answered that question by saying not only is uDesignback but they think it will be better than ever in 2013.

Now I know what some of you are thinking, didn’t Callaway have ads plastered all over the mags and TV promoting the whole “Performance Over Paint” thing?  Well, yes they did…but all those guys who created those ads are no longer employees of Callaway Golf. So…when you think about Callaway in 2013 you need to think with a clean slate, you need to forget about what was said and done BC (Before Chip) and only think about what is happening AC (After Chip).  For those that don’t know that is a reference to Chip Brewer, Callaway Golf’s new CEO.

P.S. – That will most likely be the first and last religious reference you will ever see on MyGolfSpy…just sayin’.

uDesign Options to choose from:

This is just a SAMPLE of the udesign options they will offer. There will be a lot more options than what is shown.

The golf industry has changed due to the falling interest in the sport. People are not playing as much as they did in the past.

There are several factors in addition to the economy. One example–In Minnesota, green fees were increased too quickly long before the problems with the economy. Rounds dropped off and now they are lowering prices.

I saw, was just commenting on it. Although I can see the company changing directions AC, at some point you just need to look at things and wonder if they are going to come around and bite you. There was plenty of talk all over the internet on how Callaway would eventually fall to a different clubhead color, and it makes them look horrible.

Diehard golf fans will understand the CEO change and know how the company is different. But for the ones that are golf-channel commercials only, theyll call it a crock. Just makes you go Hmm.

I see your point Thain…and might agree. But there needed to be changes from Callaway for the golf-channel commercial only guys to let them know that things are changing. Is this what will do it? No. This just keeps their name on the tips of people tongues and has people talking about the brand throughout the year with easy little projects like this or another analogy would be limited edition releases. The true test of changing those GC guys opinions about the Callaway brand will happen over the next 2 years. They have to put out not only good product which they have done (but not many people cared) but put out product people care to bag and are proud to tell their friends about.

The industry has changed dramatically and one of the ways it has changed is the product life cycles. It has now become more difficult to stay relevant 365 days of the year. How do you do that, honestly it isn’t that difficult from where I sit and what i see. And some brands have adapted well, some are getting left in the dust and continue to believe that it will go back to the way it was or refuse to conform to the where it has gone.

That being said is this a great product launch and one with no holes in it? No, I don’t think so…but it is still more than some others are doing to stay relevant. Look at Cleveland and Titleist as an example. It’s not that they’re putting out an inferior product but you just hear less about them because they seem to want to refuse to conform to the new marketing strategies and product launch platforms. And what has happened, they are losing market share in golf shops across the country.

But once again it is not that I disagree with you that some of their decisions might come back to bite them, but remember all these past few product concepts were already ready to roll out before Chip came in to town. And the fact that he scrapped about 80% of what they were going to release is a HUGE undertaking. It was done in a very short time frame. I think you will begin to see less of this type stuff and more stuff people are going to care about over the next 24 months over at Callaway. But only time will tell.

Hybrid= Blue with gold dust in the paint with white racing stripes.
3wood= Red with a skull that has ghost flames for hair
Driver = Black with the pontiac dragon facing the club face.

uDesign didn’t really take off and Callaway took down the website and sold the leftover drivers in the stores. I don’t see this being any different.

Tough call here. The pricing to have the custom color just seems outrageous to me so I would tend to say it won’t work. However, we golfers have proven time and time again that we will pay more than we should for a driver and then do it again in a year or two.

Are you kidding me? No plaid or paisley driver graphics? How come no “loudmouth” driver with colors so bright I get a headache at address?????? I love my Razr fit but this will lose money for Callaway in the end. Tons of options that 1% of the golf market will latch onto. For Cally’s sake I hope I’m wrong.

Mostly i want them to add Oban shafts.

Well the colour options are very neat. Great to see it finally happen somewhere outside Japan, and for a normal price. I think its great.

But I am a bit troubled by the fact that the biggest ‘innovations’ and most hyped features in driver technology over the last few years has been the colour of the heads……

LOL- I hear you, Chris! Yeah, that split-second when the face is actually square to the target line gets bumped up by 4-6mph because of the paint. Just like the slots, lines, scoops and whatever else they put on the heads… Or the special paint they use on shafts.

TwoSolitudes, there’s absolutely nothing they can do anymore to increase performance and remain conforming- haven’t been able to for a few years now. The adjustability thing was it and even then it’s only for a small segment of the golfing population. If 70-80% of the golfing population fights a slice, what do they need an open clubface for? For the 20-30% that does need it, there were options before the adjustability craze took off.

Well since the advancements in technology have been pushed to the limits, what else are you going to do if you’re a manufacture?

Might as well cater to those who want to look good on the course and have their clothes and clubs/shafts match.

I like uDesign and I like to colors. I don´t agree with the argument that they don´t have anything new to offer when they do this. It´s going to be a big part of the industry. Or at least – they´re trying to make it important for us and the industry.

We have nothing to lose. We´re getting great products like Razr Fit and AMP Cell with exciting new colors. Products that perform and at the same time make golf more interesting for different types of golfers.

Not everyone is a hardcore, retro purist with a MacKenzie and blades. Embrace new ideas, be positive. It doesn´t ruin anything. It just adds a new dimension.
