// Growing Trend – Now Available For The Driver

About 3 years ago in a radio interview I was asked what I thought would be the “5 Biggest Trends in the Golf Equipment Industry Over the Next 5 Years”.  The first on my list was no shocker for the radio host…it was adjustability across a broader spectrum of products. But #2 seemed to surprise him…I told him it would be the customization & personalization of just about every piece of equipment in golfers bags. I told him he is going to be shocked at how much different golfers gear will look in the coming years.  The trend was already catching on in many other industries.  And yeah sure…golf had dabbled in it a little bit with some of the boutique putter brands…but 3 years ago not many people would have imagined what would be in store for the rest of the clubs in the bag.

Since that time the golf world added some C & P to wedges (Vokey WedgeWorks & Cleveland Golf’s – MyCustom Wedge)…and from the rumors I’m hearing a few of the other BIG golf companies now have more products slated to allow golfers to add their personal touch to drivers and even irons in the next couple years.

// Callaway Launches uDesign – 1st Mass Personalization Option For Drivers

Which brings me to what is being launched today by Callaway Golf.  They’re calling it uDesign.  First products won’t ship until May 1st…but out of the gates it will allow golfers to customize & personalize their new Callaway RAZR Fit® Drivers.  Now employees won’t go on record with this but it sounds like this is only the start of things to come from Callaway Golf. The uDesignsystem features an online interface, that allows golfers to select their own color choices on RAZR Fit’s clubhead and grip, as well as custom shaft models and a few other custom configurations.  There will be more than 70,000 unique possibilites with the uDesign™ online tool.  And the cost for the customizations will run you $50 (not including shaft upgrades of course).

// Will This Catch On?

Now all this sounds like a pretty cool new option for Callaway Golf fans…but my concern when I first heard the news was…is this just going to be swept under the carpet and forgotten about after a couple weeks like some of the other things Callaway has done in the past.  Or would they actually give this the attention it needs like a Taylormade would with the “White Drivers” or the “Rocketballz” product launches.  Because let’s be honest…having a good idea is one thing but actually making it something golfers care about is another.  And not many people do that better than TM.  I mean seriously they make people care about hearts on hats, the number 17 on shirts and white paint on the top of drivers for god’s sake.  Something almost no one would care about if any other company released it.

// Next BIG Thing For Callaway?

So how can Callaway do this?  Well…the main difference right now between the previous #1 brand Callaway & the new #1 golf brand Taylormade isn’t quality of their product.  Because if we’re being 100% honest here…Callaway might have a better product line from top to bottom.  The difference between the two is simple…it’s all about “Tour Player Presence”.  Tour players are and most likely will always be the most influential part of the “Pyramid of Influence” in the golf industry.  For whatever reason…if golfers see Joe Blow on tour winning with a purple driver you can bet your ass your gonna see more purple drivers in consumers bags the following week.  And I bet if Taylormade deployed their army of staffers with purple drivers at next weeks tournament…it would prove my point.

Taylormade deploys that army of pro players with what some might consider ridiculous pieces of technology almost on a weekly basis nowadays…but it works.  Just ask those thousands of readers that told us “RocketBallz” was the stupidest name they had ever heard…and the ones that told us it would be the biggest flop they ever produced.  Well guess what….

So…can Callaway make this the next BIG thing?  Or will it be something you’ve already forgotten about when they next major rolls around?  Well…from what we have heard so far they’re definitely going to make a big splash with this and it’s going to get a lot of media attention.  Sounds like your gonna see a lot of their staffers customizing and personalizing their RAZR Fit® Drivers in all kinds of ways in future events.  Don’t be surprised to see Phil Mickelson and others matching their driver color to the outfits they wear…or playing their alma maters colors in the next tournament.

// Take It For A Test Drive – uDesign It

I went through the process myself yesterday and below you will see a couple of the ways you can customize your driver in the new uDesignsystem.  But give it a shot yourself and see what design you can come up with .  Then tell us what you think.  You can also use the “Share” option and post your design to your favorite social media site.  And you might want to give that a try…cause I’ll give you a hint…that will most likely be a part of the contest we have coming up soon for the one we giveaway to a MyGolfSpy reader.

Nice idea which I’m sure will catch on to some degree. Can’t exactly get my head around the $599 price tag for what is being offered, even with the shaft upgrades. Should be an interesting direction for equipment manufacturers to take, though.

Not bad, but nothing exciting. I guess when you spend 36+ weeks watching 43 cars far more colorful than the uDesign for 3-5 hours plus qualifying and practice, you need a little more to get sufficient AMPed.

I didn’t read all the comments as I am busy this wonderful day. I think it will be fine if they don’t charge an arm and a leg for shafts that are “made for”. It already looks more expensive. I could give a rip about color of shaft, grip etc. Does it preform or not???? Customization of length, lie, loft, and shaft are important.

This is not so much about customization but rather getting people to buy direct from Callaway. Retailers would not be able to offer this level of customization and Callaway will pocket their margin (roughly 40% of total retail price) making this a margin play as opposed to a customization play.

The only custom option not available today is the bottom of the club. What good is that? You can put any of those shafts and any of those grips on your clubs now. I would much prefer to have a custom driver cover with my name and custom colors but with the brand logo also. Unless they are going to customize the top of the driver I think it’s useless.

I think this is just the first step and it’s fairly cheap for Callaway to implement. Plus, no big company put out every good idea at the same time, how would they sell the club next year?

I’m guessing if this takes off, and I think it will, then crown and ferrule color will be in the next version. Maybe face color for version 3.

Looks like Tiger Woods has had some influence on another Golf company….

Sorry EA Sports and the game with Tigers name on it, that has been a feature for some time, changing shaft, head and grip color and make playing a little more fun….sorta.

Very cool. Her name is “White Lightening”. 8.5 degree Razr Fit, Silver/White head accent, Fubuki Alpha 60 stiff shaft, Golf Pride New Decade 55G Black/White grip…… maybe some TrueAim on the crown and a Harrison Shotmaker inside……. OK, now I am excited!

I had a back operation March 8 and decided then and there to start playing left handed. A couple of months ago I bought a Callaway Diablo Driver from a local shop while I was waiting for a set of new Cleveland 270FL woods. This was the most beautiful driver I had ever seen and I have, since the operation, put together and entire set of Diablo Edge clubs, including a new red Hot Z bag. I sent my two 20+ year old Odyssey Rossie Blade putters off last week to convert them to left hand and to refinish them. Red is my favorite color and the plastic kind of see through insert in the woods really rocks….also I think the red inserts in the back of the Edge irons makes them one of the best looking clubs around.

I am 100% for more colors and customizations, bring it on!! Speaking of colors, I live in Thailand where I have amassed a collection of golf shirts in all colors mostly bright colors with lots of cool designs…….I was watching the Masters last week and noted how BORING the clothes are that most of the guys wear; and these guys get this stuff free and surely have some input as to what they would like to wear. It’s time for men to get out of those boring clothes and wear some great looking stuff…….Peacocks can do it, so should us men.

While I’m on the subject, wouldn’t it be nice to go back in time the days when we saw some colors on our car interiors besides grey, tan and black…..my Mother had a 1962 Ford Fairlane , red, with a red and white tuck and roll interior…………….now that was a great looking car, and right off the showroom floor. You also got to pick good looking car colors in those days………..I think it’s about time we had a revolt! Cars are sooooo boring now unless you’ve got 75+ thousand of dollars to spend, or less than $15,000. Why is it they make multi-colored bottom of the line cars but such very boring middle of the road cars????

I currently have a RAZR Fit in the bag and now I want another one because of the color options. Would like to see the colored Lamkin 3Gens as an option though. Purple head, ‘ahina 70, -.5 inch, +2 wraps with purple grip please.

This is a great idea… The number of golfers hunting for something new and customizable has grown exponentially. It became well known when Scotty Cameron made it so accessible with custom stamping and paintfills on their website, and now many other putter customization sites have popped up… its very possible the “next big thing” in golf. Now that Vokey and Cleveland have “full customization” of their wedges, I was worried that this custom thing was going the wrong way… who wants to pay $200-$250 for a club that you’ll wear out and need to replace in 6-12 months. A putter can last you a lifetime, and, theoretically, a driver can too.

This is a great idea. As long as they don’t get too crazy with the pricing, I think that many people who might not have otherwise considered Callaway might start buying. I’ve been a strict Titleist or Taylormade TP driver guy for the last 5 years. I haven’t SERIOUSLY considered a driver from any other brand… but now I find myself on the Callaway website, seeing what MY CUSTOM driver might look like… and it’s looking pretty good!

Okay so my gripes I went through this process quick and easy but an upgrades shaft for a total of 600 bucks come on dude!!!!!!!! also, you can goes as low as minus 11/2 inch in length am I missing the starting length? that would help!!!! finally, the grip size with wraps how about us dudes that have smaller hand sand need -1/32 or 1-64 for grip there are only plus sizes unless I missed that as well.

NOTE: the colors are cool but only onth ebottom of the face yes they have a marketing scheme here but the colors are vague and tradional and will not liely be seen unless upside down. forgetting them already!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed, I think this will really catch on. But downside is the stock shaft options. Nothing on their part, but if they are offering to custom color aftermarket shaft offerings then they are onto something huge.

My scheme is black and yellow, I kinda made myself play the Axivcore tour series :)
Luckily for me, they work well.
