Cleveland Niblick – A Blast From The Past!

Will You Bag It?

cleveland niblick

It has been a long time since any of us sported a “Niblick” in our bags. Well you might have but if you

did…you most likely needed a tetnis shot from all the rust on the shaft. But Cleveland is trying to change that, with their soon to be released new 2009 Cleveland Niblick.

Will Others Bag It?

Cleveland claims that their new Niblick will combine the best features of a putter, wedge, iron and hybrid. They are hoping that the Niblick gains popularity similar to how the rise of the hybrid has over the past 5 years. Actually this is a clever marketing idea…come out with a club that no one else has….sets you apart. And setting yourself apart has become more and more difficult in the golf club world…well unless you are a gimmick. In our opinion its a great idea but it will not catch on…and not because it isn’t a valuable stick to carry. Cleveland’s Niblick kryponite will be the rule regarding how many clubs one can carry in there bag at one time. Think about it…which club would you give up to put a Niblick in the bag?

How It Will Help Your Game

The Cleveland Niblick will be available in a 9 or a 10, the 9 being a 37 Degree and the 10 being a 42 Degree loft. They will have 8 Degrees of bounce, which is 4-6 degree more then the typical short iron. They will be similar in width to a putter and will be available in a 35″ length. And will also have Zip Grooves similar to their CG12 and CG14 wedges.

I bought the 37 deg model from a used shop today, hit about a dozen balls on the range and chipped around the practice green for an hour. I gotta say so far first impressions I am disappointed.

Soft chips were really hard to pull off – the ball won’t get in the air. Longer chips work ok but get ready for a lot of roll. Ball seems to roll about 4 times farther than in travels in the air. Something about the address position is odd- normally I chip with an open stance, but had to adopt more of a straight-on putter style stance to get it to go where I wanted. I could see trying this club on a shot from around 8 feet off the green to a pin way across the other side, but for that matter I could probably just use my 8 iron.

On the range I tried some 1/4 to 1/2 swing punch shots. It comes up fine and flies straight — but so did my wedge trying same swing. It traveled farther and lower in the air than I expected. Regarding the fat-shot-fixer aspect, I found that it dug into the ground as much as any other club. In fact the length is so short that I had to intentionally flatten out my swing, setup farther from the ball, to keep from hitting fat. I also couldn’t see attempting a full swing with this club due to it’s short length.

On the positive side, I did like the way the club felt at impact, forgiving but yet confidence inspiring. I think I would like to check out the Cleveland CG14 (not sure if that is the model) wedge with the gel insert on the back.

I’ll try it on the course for a couple rounds before making up my mind to put it on ebay. I also think that the 42 deg version would probably be more like what I was expecting for chipping.

Anyway, that’s just my experience so far. I understand a lot of people love it and maybe it will work for you, I’m just not convinced yet that it is for me.

I’m about a 13 handicap, and I was skeptical, because I thought it was basically a glorified chipper. Boy was I wrong. This is a great club, and I’ll tell you what to take out of your bag — if you get the 42 degree version, take out your PW. If you carry a lob wedge, you’ll have no need for a PW with the niblick in your bag. From 110 yds, in, it’s very accurate, forgiving, and easy to control. It is also a GREAT chpping club. It has more feel and more versatility than any club I’ve ever played. I think it has knocked about 5 strokes off my game. Demo it if you can.

I tried one of these at the driving range a few weeks back, they’re fantastic in the wind and would be a great club for the wind swept links course. Even though I’m a long hitter and low handicapper I’m seriously considering getting one of these before 2010. I’d probably ditch my 4 iron for it.

I ordered the 37 degree niblick from the local Roger Dunn Sporting Goods Store and it will take 4-6 weeks to receive the item. That was in December 26th 2008. I wonder if I will get the 2009 model? Cleveland makes only two models with either the steel or graphite shaft. I was told it was a special order for the graphite, hence the 4-6 week delay. One would think since Cleveland is selling the club that they would have it in stock, makes one wonder if the club isn’t produced in China until it is ordered then the boat trip from China takes 4-6 weeks.
