Can it Continue Perfection? The Clicgear 3.5+

(by Dave Wolfe)  Back in 2011, I wrote what I feel is the definitive review of the Clicgear 3.0 push cart.  I took that cart out on the course round after round, over multiple terrains, and through as many different climates as any sane person would golf in.  Try as I might, I could not come up with a single criticism or a feature that I would change.  As such, the Clicgear 3.0 pushcart received my first perfect score in a review.

Now here we are in 2013 and Clicgear has updated their pushcart to the new Clicgear 3.5+ model. We have all learned from the madness that is iPhone updating that going from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4S is not the same as going from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5.  That was my first thought when I read the release about this new cart.  We are transitioning from a Clicgear 3.0 to a Clicgear 3.5+.  Like the smaller iPhone updates, I don’t expect a major overhaul.  Instead, I expected the Clicgear 3.5+ to keep the great features of the Clicgear 3.0, and add some new minor options to improve on the existing model.  Can you improve on perfection?  Or, is Clicgear running straight into the proverb of if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Basal Perfection

I am happy to report that the features that truly set the Clicgear cart apart from the competition are still present on the new model.  When you roll a Clicgear, you still get:

  • Clicgear Stability: The wide wheelbase and overall tube geometry makes the Clicgear 3.5+ one of the most stable carts out there.  Fully capable of long ghost rides down the hills.
  • Bag Versatility: While Clicgear does make the very nice B3 Golf Bag to pair with the cart, the truth is that the Clicgear can accommodate the vast majority of bags in the marketplace today.  You don’t need a new bag when you get this cart.  The arms can adjust to accommodate even the most diminutive to the most rotund golf bag.

  • Solid Construction: Longevity is definitely a strength of the Clicgear.  My brother is still using and loving my old Clicgear 2.0.  Little bit of cleaning, and a touch of lube and you are good to go.
  • Compact Size: The compact nature of the Clicgear often stops people in their tracks the first time that they see it fold or unfold.  It should fit into any trunk that can actually hold a golf bag.

  • Course Ergonomics: The Clicgear rolls well overall terrains, with the console/handle height easily adjusting to the golfer’s most comfortable pushing position.  The roll of the Clicgear is not effortless, but it is much easier than implied by the bulky tubular geometry of the cart.
  • Solid Tires: While this is now the industry standard, Clicgear’s lightweight and tubeless tires are exceptional.  They are subject to goose poop adhesion, but the treads clean with minimal effort.

So What’s New Then?

You can’t roll out a new model without some modifications.  While I didn’t expect the modifications to be extensive, I do think that they should be improvements, thus adding to the quality of the overall cart.  Here are the changes for the Clicgear 3.5+:

  • Increased Cargo Net Volume: It’s 80% larger!  OK, that’s cool.  More room to drop stuff in the net.  I’d call that a plus.  It’s not so huge that it gets in the way under the console, or that things get lost in its vastness.
  • Improved Braking System: This one is not as easy to see in the design, and I always thought the brakes were great, especially the transistion from the 2.0 to the 3.0.  Good gets better.

  • Improved Umbrella Holder Storage Bracket: Ummmm, OK this one is reaching a bit.  It works, and works better, no argument.  However, I don’t use an umbrella and I actually leave the holder at home to prevent losing it and excess weight.

  • Larger Adjustable Cup Holder: I always thought that the cup holder was great, like the brakes.  However, I think that the new one is an improvement.  It holds a 22 oz. beer bottle, so that’s all of the win this kid needs in a cupholder.

  • Improved Bag Strap System: This was the one thing that I was initially very puzzled about.  The great thing about the previous clip systems was their adjustability.  I thought it was pretty easy to adjust the strap length to match the diameter of the bag.  The new hook and ring system definitely looks different, and guess what, it’s a better system. All of the adjusting is accomplished on the ring end, with the elastic cords sliding through and fastening on both the top and bottom of the ring.  Pop the cords out, position the ring, and lock the cords back in place.  It’s an easy system.  If you always use the same bag, then you set it once and go.  If you change bags all of the time like I do, the ease of adjustment is great.

And So Perfect Is…Still Perfect!

There you have it, the perfect scoring Clicgear 3.0 has been enhanced and improved in the new Clicgear 3.5+.  Clicgear has added in a couple of features that make a great cart better.  Should you upgrade if you have the Clicgear 3.0?  Probably not.  While there are improvements, I would save the upgrade money this time for playing golf.  If you are thinking about getting your first pushcart though, I would say buy, buy, BUY! The Clicgear 3.5+ is the top of the pushcart heap and it continues the great legacy of the previous carts.  Perfection continues…

The front brake is incapable of holding the bag and buggy on even a low grade hill if the buggy is pointed up-hill. This design flaw renders the Clicgear unfit for purpose.
I’ve sent it back to the vendor to be replaced by the Rovic RV1S, which has back-wheel braking.

Make sure that it is not a problem due to bad tightening of the brake wire. Close to the brake there is a screw which you can adjust with your fingers. The more you tighten the screw, the more the brake “flap” goes into the cogwheel, which creates the stopping of the cart.

I had a severe problem with this in the beginning with my 3,5+ but now after tightening a lot, the problem with break weakness is gone.

So, just played my first round with the 3.5+ rather than my 2.0. I have to complain about the horrible redesign of the front wheel folding mechanism. On the 2.0 there was a patch that allows for a one handed fold..no need to touch the dirty wheel. On the 3.5+ you push a button with one hand and need a 2nd hand pushing on the muddy wheel to fold. Had I known this beforehand I would not have bought it.

I am a perfectionist and I do find points I don’t like with my 3.5.
On the course, it veers left when I push it forward to have my hands free for a few yards. Also when it rolls downhill on its own. Redistributing weights in the bag did not help. So this looks silly for a cart of that price class. But it is nice to observe how many different jokes my friends can make about it.
The brake may have a good grip on the front wheel, but when it’s wet, or windy, the virtually treadless wheel has no grip on the ground and you easily get a runaway bag even on slight slopes. You must always position the cart level or across the hill when parking for putting.
The drink holder is pretty unpractical, as it can get lost easily, damaged if left on the folded cart, tip over and spill higher bottles. Within the blink of an eye Clicgear could design a bottle-holder-holder that keeps the part with the cart all the time, even when folded. And best also the umbrella holder.
It’s winter, and it’s muddy. So is the bottom of the cart. So is the bottom bag strap if you don’t tuck it away carefully. And so will be your hands and your trunk unless you hose the cart down completely after use. That’s possible if you have 10 minutes and a hose and decent water pressure, as mud and goose poo stick pretty well on the wheels. Be careful not to squirt water and dirt on your bag and your clothes and fellow golfers. Wear water proof shoes. Bring an extra towel and 5 minutes more to dry your love. Or else it’s gonna wet your trunk and/or pick up extra mud during transit from the hose to your car. There is a wheel cover to prevent the worst, but it is a nightmare to put it on. I haven’t figured another way but to tumble the folded unit over the tarmac, having parts scratched that shouldn’t. Occasionally the cover of the carts compartment flips open during the process, as the magnetic catch is not strong enough. So the contents is sprayed over the parking lot. That really makes people stop and admire and envy me. I believe it is better to use a large strong waste bag instead of the wheel cover, and stick the whole unit inside.
All in all, it works and is healthier than a pull trolley, but genius was on leave during its design.

I hope you get a notification about this reply Lars.

I had the same problem with the steering left on my 3,5+. But there is a feature to correct that. However, when corrected to perfect straight roll without a bag, make sure it stays that way when the bag is mounted, otherwise keep going until the steering is straight with the bag on it.

      Good luck!

Can you do a review of the new for 2014 clicgear 8.0. I’m wondering if the 4 wheel design is better than the 3 wheel and what other features it has.

Hi Dave! Just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU! I was seriously considering purchasing the new 3.5+ for my husband this Christmas, but your thorough (and very honest) review helped me to realize that the 3.0 that I purchased for him 2 seasons ago, is just fine for now. He takes excellent care of it and it operates and looks practically like it did when he took it out of the box. (and he plays a LOT of golf) Thanks to you, I now have a couple o’ hundred extra bucks, that I can spend on other gifts (for him, of course) this year! If anyone from ClicGear happens to read this, they might be disappointed that they’ve lost a cart sale, but maybe the sting will be lessened just a bit, by knowing that I’ll be spending (at least some of) the money that I saved on some new ClicGear accessories! Have a Joyous Holiday season and a Happy and Bountiful New Year!

I must have boight a Clicgear that was defective. No matter how I adjust the front wheel wurh that stupid allen wrench the cart with a golf bag ir empty went to the right. Thank goodness for the Golfsmith 30 day guarantee.

Clicgear you may add breaks and other silly enhancements but how about making a cart and adjustments that go straight. Your cart is missing direction. Wrong purchase.

I am still using my Model 1.0(upgraded to the 2.0 solid wheels) and it still works great with many many many rounds of golf on it. I did a custom 3.0 cart for a friend. My only complaint about the 3.0 and 3.5 is that the new brake lever renders the holder for my GPS useless. it mounts to the umbrella mount. you can’t flip the brake lever up with it on the cart.

I love the 3.5. Sure I could save maybe $100 and get something that still works but it won’t be a clicgear. I’m one of the guys that looks at the big pictures and am in it for the long haul.

I play a ton of golf, I love to walk but my back just can’t take carrying the clubs so I went with the clicgear 3.5. What a great choice, it’s serving me better than well! I love it.

Great review! I really like my ClicGear 3.0, and don’t anticipate upgrading. As a former Armor/Cavalry guy, I appreciate a cart built as solidly as my old M-60A1 tank! (but definitely more maneuverable!) However, one aspect of the review intrigued me: What is the specific improvement to the umbrella holder? I rarely use mine only because the inside diameter is just slightly smaller than the handle of my super-awesome golf umbrella, so the handle only goes part-way in. If the new version has a wider diameter, but uses the same size threaded post, then I will buy that new holder as an accessory.
      Thanks!

Great review. Coincidentally, I was just in the golf store yesterday looking at these same two models, the 3.0 and 3.5.
I didn’t ask a store associate, so I was wondering what the differences were, other than about a fifty dollar increase for the 3.5.
Now I know, and I also know that the 3.0 got that superb original review when it came out.
      Thanks for the info, MGS.

Looks to me like the new Clicgear 3.5+ has taken a few of its “improvement” ideas from a little-known 4-wheeler called the Flip-n’-Go from Axglo. Same idea of adjustable straps (really easy to load any bag), one hand opening/folding, stable braking (operated from the handle – one flip), and both a net and a storage compartment with a hinged lid that holds the scorecard. Folds up as small or smaller than the Clicgear and comes with a zippered/Velcro carrying bag (helps keep the trunk clean and free of grass clippings. All-in all as good as or better than the Clicgear. See at http://www.axglo.com.

I had the 3.0 for about a year and absolutely loved it. It handled my go to hilly course with ease! Before i pulled the $200 trigger for the 3.0, i researched all the push carts out there and talked to plenty of sales associates at different retail shops, Golfsmith, PGA Superstore, Golf Galaxy, and Roger Dunns. To a man, they all recommended the ClicGear and I could not have been more pleased. So when the 3.5 came out, there were some bittersweet moments of loving the 3.0 but wanting to see how much better they could have made the 3.5. After a full review, there was not enough there to make the change from my trusty 3.0. If I didn’t already have the 3.0, I would be the first to buy the 3.5 don’t get me wrong. Well, long story short, I listed my white 3.0 on eBay and was amazed to have sold it for $170!! Needless to say, the 3.5 was in my hands the same day as I shipped the 3.0 to another ClicGear convert. The 3.5 is like a favorite pair of jeans, familiar and reliable. The improvements are great but the best part is with a $20 coupon I had from the PGA Superstore, my new white 3.5 only cost me $30. I know guys that have gone with the “less expensive” models with the thought process of, “well, if I get a years worth of use, its paid for itself”. Like all things in life, you get what you pay for and I have seen many of these economical carts simply fall apart. I lwill take my ROI on my ClicGear cart anytime!!

I’ve got the 2.0 for a couple of years now and it’s a very good push cart. The only thing I dislike about it is that it doesn’t fit tour bags very good. The bar it leans on always leaves a dent in the bag. Even if you put them side ways. Next cart is probably gonna be something like a Stewart Z3. Handles that much better. And to be honest, an improved bag strap system? What was wrong with the old one? And it doesn’t look that much different. The old strap holds my bag just fine. And what about an improved breaking system. It’s not a car. Come on. Dave, no offense, it’s a nice blog, I enjoyed reading it, but what Clickgear is doing starts to sound more like going from one version of the iPhone to the next with a small update. I think that comment in your blog was spot on.

I’m still using a clicgear 1.0 and I LOVE the tubed tires. My buddy has a 3.0 and he likes my wheels and tires better also, he says it rolls better. A few things I really don’t like though are the brake on the 1.0 and the lack of storage space for headcovers, etc (and also the narrow cup holder). The brake is difficult to set and release compared to my buddy’s 3.0. I haven’t purchased a lot of add-ons that I would like to have because you have to mount the brackets to hold everything. Do you think it would be worth the switch? One word of advice to anyone who buys a clicgear, your first purchase should be the wheel cover! Keeps a LOT of dirt and goose crap out of your car.

      I owned a 2.0 & migrated to a 3.0.
Overall I loved both although I find pushing it especially in wet a bit of a chore… Others say it’s fine I feel a bit too wide with tires…

I loved the net and improved console in 3.0 so worthy upgrade. This new one? Meh…

One thing I hate is the separated bottle holders versus version 1. I have lost mine versus a built in method. I have also forgotten in car trunk.
I also have had taller bottles of whatever invert and spill contents…
… So I don’t like the design of hanging on the extras…
But it’s built like a tank. Console huge and we’ll designed although I would like some padding as other carts have… Add most people like me put their expensive smart phones in there bouncing around.

It fits with a fairly big bag into my mustang convertible trunk. The only folding model that did that… I tried several…
I would recommend it to anyone despite any small design issues I have.

      Great review as always Dave.

Clicgear makes one of the best pushcarts out there… but the lack of 4 wheels (like the Sun Mountain) seems odd, given that the industry is heading that way. Four wheels makes pushing the cart more effortless as the weight is distributed over 4 wheels instead of 3… simple physics. Also, the wider base mean less chance of tipping over to the side (in case you leave your cart in odd places or play very hilly courses).

Also, $219 for a pushcart is very steep, no matter how good it is… they all do basically the same thing… hold your bag, hold umbrella/drink/balls/misc crap and (most) fold up small to fit in your trunk. Quality is def worth something, but I don’t think the Clicgear is made THAT much better than most cheaper ones.

Do yourselves a favor and before you buy the Clicgear, check out this one on Costco’s website… only $100. Find a friend that has a membership and have them buy it for you.

I have found the cup holder too shallow for anything but my phone.

Given what goes into a premium push cart like the clicgear or the speedcart, $200-$220 is an absolute bargain! It’s comical that many people don’t think twice about paying $130 for a grip, a steel shaft, a ferrule, and a CAST club head when buying a Vokey wedge, and they’ll drop $10-$15 extra every round to ride, but instead of spending $200 up front on something of quality that will easily last you 200+ rounds if taken care of is seen as over-spending.

      David W

      I completely agree Steve!

I think I prefaced my post by saying that the Clicgear is a great (one of the best) push carts. My point was that the one being sold at Costco is a fantastic push cart as well (my friend has it) and it’s only $100. I cannot rationalize spending an extra $119 on the Clicgear… it just doesn’t seem fiscally smart given what pushcarts are supposed to accomplish.

And I agree with you Steve, I also think it’s silly to spend extra $ on a new Vokey when a 2 yr old Callaway Jaws is just as good (and a fraction of the cost). That analogy supports my point.

      Steve P

How would anyone know it’s a “fantastic” push cart unless they’d had it for at least a couple years? The best carts are BUILT TO LAST. A brand new Yugo sure looked purdy when sitting on the show room floor too.
I looked at ALL of the pictures of the cart on Costco’s site, and any time there are plastic clips and buttons involved in putting on and taking wheels off, you’re asking for trouble. Buck up and get a Clicgear or a Sun Mountain is my advice to all.

      Steve P

I stumbled across this picture earlier this spring when I was shopping the market and researching carts to replace my original Clicgear that had tons of rounds on it.
(I still got $75 for it when I sold it.)

Cut and paste the whole thing into browser to see picture:

      https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151542356253923&set=pb.73846083922.-2207520000.1370464811.&type=3&theater

So, 600 rounds of use comes out to 33 cents per round of use.
Please, spend the extra and get something good!
(BTW, I ended up buying a Speedcart SV1 and it’s great.)

About three years ago I purchased the Caddytek Caddycruiser for $ 119.00. It seemed like a fantastic value compared to the Click Gear and Sun Mountain carts.

Unfortunately, I discovered last week the flaw in the theory. While unfolding the cart last Saturday morning one of the support bars for the left rear wheel simply fell out of the socket in the frame. Now the left rear wheel just flops around like a perch just dragged out of the pond.

Attempts to reinsert the bar have proven futile.

I guess if I want to replace my cart every 2 – 3 years this might make sense. However, I find it a bother to deal with change. Especially undesired change.

Therefore, I ordered my new, and hopefully final, Clickgear 3.5+ cart Monday.

If I’m back here in less than four years looking for another replacement all of you will be certain to hear my frustration.

I expect that $ 100.00 additional investment to provide at least six years of service.

I like using a push cart, but I don’t enjoy the fumbling around getting the bag on and off and everything in and out of the trunk. That is usually the least relaxing part of my round, especially if I’m running late for my T-time. Don’t know if Clicgear can help me here, but It sounds like they’ve thought about just about everything else.

I can open my 1.0 (which if anything takes longer than the 3.0/.5), mount my bag (ok, stop laughing), and be ready to go in less than 2 minutes.

Thanks for catching that Jason. I am certain that I made that mistake, and had to fix it, on previous cart reviews. Mental block on that one, or maybe a deep affinity for Turbo and the broom dance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVrWDPi12zE&feature=share&list=UU7LCH24-HfpRAjrjf3X_V5Q
