Coming Soon – Mizuno JPX 919 Irons

We’re rolling towards the end of summer, and while that’s less than awesome, the upside is it means we’re rolling closer to the next release of Mizuno JPX irons.

Speaking as a guy bound by embargo to pretend to know less than I do, I’m finding it hard to contain my excitement. Unfortunately, Mizuno likely won’t have much to say until late August, which means we won’t have much to say until late August.

For now, we’re limited to what we can ascertain from USGA photographs.

As you glance through the pics, it’s worth remembering that JPX is Mizuno’s Modern technology line. That means modern shaping, straight edges, and different materials. The 919 Forged is Grain Flow Forged from 1025 Boron, while the 919 Hot Metal is cast from Chromoly Steel. There’s also a replacement for the JPX Tour which will end its production run having been in the bag for consecutive U.S. Open victories.

Will Mizuno add a 4th iron to the JPX lineup? I’m not ruling it out.

JPX 919 Tour

JPX 919 Forged

JPX 919 Hot Metal

Mizuno Pro 719

The Mizuno Pro line is currently exclusive to Japan. While there may be some material differences (the 719 features a copper underlay for softer feel), the iron is otherwise identical to the JPX 919 Forged, which means we get a little more glamorous early look than the USGA gives us.

Have Your Say

With concessions for the fact that the USGA’s priority is documentation and not making the product look its best, what do you think of what you’ve seen so far? Are you looking forward to the new JPX 919 lineup?

Got fitted for new irons recently and was about to get the the 900 Forged but saw this article so decided to hang back…Went into a major Golf retailer (in the UK) yesterday to inquire about these. The Mizuno rep had been in a couple of hours before to show them off and let the guys hit a few, they recon they felt awesome. They should get heads to use for fitting around 10th Sept… Just take my money now!!

I’ve read all the comments and all the ads and there is nothing in regards to the sole design of the JPX Forged. About a year ago Golf Magazine said the “con” of the club is that the leading edge has a tendency to dig. I question this review, but have never actually hit the club on actual turf – only on carpet at the local golf store. Can anyone give me some feedback on how your JPX FORGED irons interact with real turf?

Butter. They glide nicely over grass unless you want to hit further down on the ball. I’m a natural picker, and I have no problems at all with leading edge. JPX 900 Forged, C-Taper Lite Stiff. My favorite irons I’ve played to date. 9 handicap and trending lower. I like them so much that I ordered their gap wedge and use that over some of my SM6’s because of ease of use in grass (short stuff and rough).

I have the 850 forged, and wouldn’t say I’m in love with the sole design. As a 15 hcp, I have my fair share of shots I catch a bit fat and it can punish you. I will say that for the dry ground in SoCal, it is the lesser of two evils. With my x2hots if I caught it fat it would just bounce off the ground and would skull a rocket 30 yards too far. I do like the sole for the short irons though , makes it easy to hit those 30-100 yard shots clean off the turf. My personal preference would be to have a bit more bounce in the 7 iron up, or maybe a slightly different design…

Daniel, I noticed that they no longer have the beveled leading edge on the new 919 Forged and the sole is slightly wider. I just hit the new 919 Forged alongside the 900 Forged with the same shaft and the 919 felt slightly more forgiving and better off the face. I hit them off a mat indoors at Golf Galaxy, and the 919’s slightly wider sole dug less on the mat which makes me think it will dig less in the run as well. I hope that helps!

Well said Paul. Reminds me of the old adage…”Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have” I’m a 12 handicap. Hoping Mizuno will make the Tours left handed.

      Beautiful irons. And great article.
It seems to me and please correct me if i am wrong, that Mizuno is moving away from the MP line and concentrating on JPX line? In the last few years, they have noticeably lessened the choices available in both lines and now offering only one MP with variations.

Should I be waiting for the 919 or go for the MMC right now? I am a 12 handicapper. Tried the MMCs last week with a S200 shaft. Loved it.

I play off 5 and I have the JPX 900 forged! I tried the MMC and the MC and neither performed or felt the way the 900 forged do! If these are anywhere near as good as the JPX 900 forged then wait my friend as they will be superior and cheaper than the MMC’s.

      Richard,

Yeah, same! I tried the MP-18 Hi-Flis, and they personally weren’t for me. I too play JPX 900 forged… it’s the one part of my bag that I feel absolutely married to, and I’ve tried a lot of different clubs that theoretically should have been a better fit for me!

I’m interested in what you’ve got to say regarding the comparison between the 900 hot metals and the forged…I loved the mx line of forged they used to make, very soft and forgiving. Just wondering if the hot metals have a soft feel too or if I should look more towards the forged, and if the hot metals are way more forgiving than the forged…thanks in advance

It’s a little more nuanced than that. The overwhelming majority of Mizuno clubs are forged by Chuo. Chuo is not under the Mizuno umbrella in any capacity. It’s an entirely separate and unrelated entity. The bulk of Chuo’s business comes from precision auto parts and the bulk of that is for Mazda.

Chuo and Mizuno have a co-patent for the grain flow forging process which is exclusive to Mizuno. Chuo does ocassionally forge clubs for other brands, but only with Mizuno’s permission.

All Mizuno’s ‘western’ forging is housed in Chuo / Hiroshima – has been for 50 years.

You simply cannot go wrong with these clubs of sure. It will be interesting and exciting to roll into the Fall and compare/test these new irons to how they’ve improved. I too switched from JPX to MP 18 and have not looked back (sort of). Cant put my finger on it but I still have a sweet spot for these irons. Kind of like your old pair of sneakers. It will be nice to see what they’ve come up with. God I do love technology….

Can not wait to hit the new hot metal, was about to buy the 900’s but will wait to try the 919. I really do not like to break in a new set of irons in the fall/winter. Wish Mizuno had a spring release program, did not think the MP’s were for me. I am getting older and need a little more help with the irons. Seems like Ping is making stronger lofts now.

Before my Srixons I played Mizunos. If they keep this up, they’ll definitely be on the “A” list when my irons are up for replacement in a couple of years. My Srixons are great, but nothing has the feel of a Mizuno.

I have never said “Mizuno” in front of “puts out too much product too fast” or “really missed the mark on this one”.

I have said, and would willingly debate any opinion on the opposite spectrum of “Mizuno has made more quality irons for more length of time than any other top 10 OEM in the previous 15 years”.

I have never really cared too much about what the back of the club head looks like as long as it looks good at address and it performs. That said, a nice subtle clean cavity is always appreciated. I am a little shocked at how far from their minimalist cavity roots Mizuno has come with their latest offerings. Perhaps outside of golf forums, most customers no longer care or maybe they love the look of tech in the cavity.

Don’t believe the nonsense of the know it all golf crowd, you don’t need to be a scratch player to work a players iron or even pure blades. Playing a more precise iron will make you a better ball striker and they are oh so satisfying to swing. Those super game improvement paddles are hindering your progress.
