TOP-SECRET: Drivers With Computer Chips Could Be Next!

Could This Bring The $400 Driver Out Of Extinction?

What will be the next REAL technological advance in drivers?  No…not the type of “hype technology” we are becoming accustomed to.    I mean one that will actually make golfers shell out $400-500 bucks for a driver again?

In my opinion the days of $400 drivers are very close to becoming extinct and the only thing that can raise them from the dead and keep them off the “Endangered Species (Drivers) List” is to actually come out with a driver that will make golfers be willing to wait in a line wrapped around a building to be able say “I got one of the 1st FILL IN THE BLANK Drivers!  You know…the feeling Steve Jobs creates every time he launches a new iPhone…like the new iPhone 4 which just launched that had some buyers waiting in lines for over 10 hours to be able to snag one of the first new gadgets

Technologies To Be Added To The Extinction List

So what will this next technology be?  Well…first I can tell you some of the technologies that it WON’T be.

  • new adjustable weights on sole or on exterior of drivers that supposedly change ball flight characteristics.
  • minoot aerodynamic improvements with the shape of the heads
  • guaranteed longer drives – especially when the technology responsible is simply making the shaft longer or lighter

Now…I keep a list by my desk with my personal brainstorming sessions that include everything from sketches to club concepts to theories of ideas that could be the next REAL technology used in golf club design.  You know like the way Titanium drivers were when they first hit the shelves.  No…I might not be the next “Golf Nostradamus” when it comes to golf club technological advances…but I am quite sure the above list will only be 1-2 year fads that further frustrate the golf consumer over time.  The golf industry desperately needs a game changing technology.

Are Computer Chips In Drivers Next?!

So when will companies start to actually begin releasing products that we feel like we HAVE to have again and ones that justify us spending $400 for a driver again?  And could this be one of them (below)?  The rumors have been flying around for over a year now about a driver with a computer chip inside the head.  A computer chip that could tell you exactly how fast your swing was, where you contacted the face, etc. etc.  Well this is no longer a rumor!

We have been contacted by insiders from more then one of the major OEM’s now letting us know that yes it is true that they do both have this technology in the works.  Never know if they will make it to production but the questions is:

Would this be a technology you would wait in line for?

P.S. – Can you guess what company this concept comes from?

I think this is very exciting. Nice to see some real advancement. Technology allows us to improve our game either through equipment or knowledge. The computer chip would give instant feedback to every golfer. Great job Cleveland!

I am a traditionalist and think people are getting way to much informing which doesn’t help them at the end of the day. Custom fitting someone a launch monitor is one thing but this seems like it’s going to overload the every day golfer. You don’t need to be that analytical to play this game…

I’m not really sure you would be allowed to use that kind of driver in a tournament, because you can’t know how your swingspeed is etc…

Anxious to hear who’d be coming out with this, but Mizuno perhaps. They did come out with the shaft optimizer.

Don’t know how many people will actually buy into this technology anyways. Sure it is neat to have on the spot shot to shot info but, if you can’t tell where you hit the ball on the club face then you need range time not a $1000 driver. Get fit properly before you buy your $300 driver and then you won’t have to have a notebook with you on the course keeping your stats for every swing. This technology just screams 6 hr rounds. No thanks!

I am definitely going with Adams. For a while you could actually get the first generation Dixx Putters for roughly $75., but that’s because they had to blow out the inventory to make room for the 2nd generation. They have obviously been in this game for a while, and after resurrecting the hybrid concept (which actually dates all the way back to Harry Vardon, and most of us will remember the Stan Thompson Ginty) Adams has proven time and again that they are in The Game Changing field. I have no doubt that Taylor Made was a good guess, however, as when Hoeflich flew the coop to take over Nickent, many of Taylor Made’s best designers bailed, and went to Adams.

I would guess Apple – some people outside of the golf industry that have a technology that they think might make golf even cooler.

I mean, know your swing speed, impact position and smash factor on your drive? Cool.

Of course, a good player “knows” these things right after contact and as he is watching the ball get smaller in the sky.

Tony, those Adams putters (Dixx it was called- just looked it up) are going for about $200 on Amazon… still too expensive for my taste.

Adams. They had a putter a few years back (can’t remember the name) that had a micro-computer that would tell you face angle and stroke path. Intriguing technology, but didn’t sell very well (VERY expensive).

I still don’t think this technology makes a driver worth $300, let alone $400-$500. No standalone club, whether it’s a fairway wood, driver, putter, etc. is worth what most people pay for a car payment. Just plain stupid, if you ask me.

I wish there was an affordable putting technology like this that could attach to any putter, I know there was a putter that had data built in and you can get those put lab things the pros have but why can’t there be a cheap, simple version for regular joe’s.

………and on the driver I’d say Taylor Made or Nike
