Sub 70 Putters
  • Sub 70 putters are all fully CNC milled from carbon steel billets.
  • The line features popular head styles all finished in black PVD.
  • Prices range from $149 to $179.

Did you know there is a golf company that is making fully milled putters for less than $200?

Sound impossible? Well, Sub 70 is doing just that.

While other companies’ fully milled offerings consistently break the $400 mark, Sub 70 putters somehow cost about half of that.

For me, this raises a bunch of questions.

First, are these putters as good as other milled putters? Do they use cheaper materials and manufacturing? Does Sub 70’s direct-to-consumer model allow them to bypass costs that the larger OEMs all pay? Are these putters that people would actually want to have in their bags?

Obviously, I’m not going to be able to completely answer all of those questions, but let’s see what we can figure out.

Are Sub 70 Putters as Good as Other Putters?

Of all of the questions, this is probably the one to start with. Are they good putters? If a putter doesn’t perform, it’s not going to sell for $500. Or $5. So, again, do they perform?

Let’s take a look at how the Sub 70 putters have scored in the Most Wanted putter tests. In 2021, we see that the Sub 70 Sycamore 004 mallet finished in the middle of the pack but had a strong showing at the 20-foot range. The year before, their Sycamore 002 mid-mallet finished seventh out of 44 entrants and was excellent from five feet. The Sycamore 001 blade did not fare as well in the 2020 Most Wanted Blade putter test, finishing in the bottom third of the test pool.

Although the three-putter data set is, of course, limited, the strong showing for the two mallets does suggest these putters have some game. Though the blade didn’t fare as well, it still finished above putters from big companies like PING, Toulon, Cleveland, Odyssey and Bettinardi. It may not have dominated the competition but it was competitive.

Based upon what we have seen so far, I’d say that the Sub 70 putters are definitely as playable as their competitors.

Do the Sub 70 Putters Use Cheap Materials and Manufacturing?

In a word, no. While some putters in the Sub 70 price range are marketed as milled, they are actually cast putters that are surface milled post-casting. The Sub 70 putters are completely milled from carbon steel billets. No casting involved. This is a more time-consuming process and, as such, more expensive. Since carbon steel can be prone to rusting, Sub 70 had added a black PVD coating to improve durability and looks.

Carbon steel, fully milled construction and PVD finish are not typical characteristics of putters that cost less than $200. Whatever Sub 70 is doing to keep the costs low, it is not happening on the manufacturing side of things.

Are Direct-To-Consumer Savings Influencing The Price?

I think this is the best place to explore when trying to figure out how these putters can be so inexpensive. By selling direct to the consumer, Sub 70 doesn’t need to spend tons of money on the typical things that OEMs spend money on—like advertising. Big companies spend crazy dollars on flashy ad campaigns promoting their latest and greatest creations. This money, along with the salaries of the people involved, must be factored into the price of the golf club if the company is going to turn a profit.

A large company’s putter needs to be $300 to recoup the production and advertising costs. If a company like Sub 70 is not paying these costs, their putter need not have these factor into pricing and therefore can cost less.

Would Golfers Play a Sub 70 Putter?

I would hope the discussion of performance would be enough to answer “yes” to this question. However, we are talking about putters and golfers are strange beasts sometimes when it comes to putter selection.

The Sub 70 putter cohort is loaded with popular head shapes. You’ll see an Anser, a #7, a #9, a wide blade and other familiar styles. Sub 70 is not really pushing the design envelope here but rather giving golfers the styles they are familiar with. This is a good move on their part. I think a customer is more likely to try an unknown brand if they recognize the head shape.

When you dive a little deeper into the customization side of things, you’ll see that Sub 70 also is giving you some choices in how your putter is built. One of the more interesting options is that you can select a single- or double-bend shaft on some of the heads. Not only will this affect the offset and look at address of the putter but changing the shaft will definitely change how the putter plays. As far as I can tell, the price of the putter only changes if you want a more expensive SuperStroke grip. The stock Winn Medalist is a pretty solid stock grip so a change is not really needed.

Sub 70 Putter Takeaway

I was skeptical about these putters when I started looking into them. However, the more I researched them, the more impressed I became. It seems unlikely that a company can produce CNC-milled carbon steel putters with a PVD finish for prices ranging from $149 to $179. Sub 70 has done just that, though. Amazing pricing aside, the combination of popular head shapes and preliminary Most Wanted performances makes these putters worth checking out as well.

Are you still not convinced that these are worth a look? Sub 70 offers a 60-day refund guarantee with “no questions asked.” How about that? You could even treat these like Amazon Wardrobe. Order two or three that you are interested in and then keep the one that works best. Even if you keep a couple of these putters, you are still out less cash than a new putter would cost from other companies.

I recently purchased the Sycamore 004. Very pleased with it, I was able to have some customization (1* flat, double bend) for no additional cost. As others have said, it comes with several weights, head cover, ball maker, and tees.

It is on the heavy side, which I quite like. I ended up going with the 10g kit in the head. The feel off the face is superb and the alignment features on the alignment features on the 004 are very good. Paint is okay, the putter does seem to get dinged a bit if you aren’t careful keeping the headcover on in between holes.

Sub 70 took about 4 weeks to build and ship though. They are that busy! Price and quality is worth the wait.

While I am not at all unhappy with my current irons, I’ve been considering trying their clubs through their Demo program. That sounds like a real option to play with a couple of clubs and compare them in a real world application vs. just on a launch monitor; which also does have advantages. Anyway, I’d be hard pressed to swap out my ER2, but this company definitely interests me. Thanks for the review.

I recently purchased a Sub70 Sycamore 002 Mid-Mallet as it was just the difference I was looking for – a slightly heavier head (390g). The weight difference has been helpful and my putts per round are slowly dropping as I become more used to it. I bought without demoing, but knew the 60-day guarantee was there if needed. It is not!

I’d really like to see you guys do reviews on the Maltby clubs. They have milled putters for under $150 and you can pick the head, shaft and grip. There are other clubs as well that look like they’re a great buy. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to find any unbiased reviews on Maltby.

Please read reply on Maltby products. I have been using a Maltby blade putters for over 40years. Maltby clubs are of excellent quality. I purchased his 25th anniversary model 131/500 and I am still using that putter. I’ve been playing golf for over 40years with a handicap of 2/5 I have tried many of the new models but I always end up going back to the Maltby blade.

I recently started gaming the 001 Blade the past month and it’s fantastic, I would definitely recommend Sub 70 to anyone else (I also recently added a fw and wedges from them that are both huge upgrades to my bag for half the cost). The putter’s feel is as good or better vs. other blades I’ve played and it looks amazing too!

It’s not the arrow. It’s the Indian. A good putter can putt with anything. A bad putter does nothing but chase a dream that he can buy a better putting game. The fact is that fails time and time again. Fools buy putter after putter and have a basement full of them. No one ever learns. It’s the Indian, not the arrow.

Exactly… And I’d go further. All these putter lab analysing what happens after you hit the ball are worthless. I was playing around at my local golf shop while my wife was testing a wood and saw an old hickory stick putter, guest what, it still works!!!

First off, your analogy is incorrect, the ball is the arrow, the putter/club is the bow. And different style bows(like clubs) have different strengths. Getting the right bow(putter) can help the archer(golfer) achieve better results for the target you are going for and the style of biomechanics your have.

Like to see lower priced putters. Not sure I can justify even the lower price with all the other options out there. My manufacturing background says that even at this price they are making good money. It’s not like putters need the kind of R&D that goes into metalwoods. All the manufacturing is automated except for assembly, which is a small cost. I’ll bet the profit percentage in putters is higher than all other clubs.

They look great and can’t beat the price, but they appear to be on the heavy side at 370 grams with the light weights in. Might be tough to handle on fast greens.

I have a sycamore 005 wide blade center shaft that I like so much that it knocked my scotty phantom x 6str out of my bag. I have to say that I’m impressed. What I’ve learned about the most wanted lists is that it’s a good starting point but I really need to hit all the clubs before I buy. Only once (cobra fly z back in 2015) was the most wanted club the best fit for me.

What country are they made? Big part of the total cost. Carbon steel? I’m sure there are different levels of quality. Where are the billets produced? Factory yields? Rework allowed? Specs compared to other manufacturers? All part of the total cost.

He never says that Sub70 putters are cast. He says some putters in the Sub70 PRICE RANGE are marketed as milled but are actually cast. That doesn’t mean putters made by Sub70, it means putters by other manufactures that cost the same as the Sub70 putters.

Performance of the sub 70 putters tested is encouraging. However, I ask when you say “some putters … marketed as milled…. Are actually cast” how does the consumer identify with this? Also, are the “carbon steel billets” when used made in USA or elsewhere? And, is the milling done in USA or elsewhere? Simple Q. The answers may have something to do with quality and with price?

I recently purchased their Sycamore 002 mid-mallet and I have been very pleased with the it. The finish looks premium and the feel and roll off the face are as good as any milled putter I have tried. The only partial knock is that I ordered the putter at 34in and when I got it, it was about 35.5in. No worries, they are a small company, mistakes happen. I have the means to trim the shaft myself so I reached out to customer service and they apologized and shipped a grip to me straight away so that I could trim and regrip without the hassle of returning the club. I strongly suggest you give one of their putters a try, you will not be disappointed.

After driving, I think putting is the most essential part of a good round. I overlooked the importance of putter fitting until I had it done. It seriously took 4 strokes off my rounds. With that said, I think the $350 I paid for my putter is outrageous. I would be curious to try one of theses Sub 70 putters to see the difference.
