(Video) – Finding the Right Putter for Your Game

QUESTION: Do you find yourself consistently pulling or pushing putts?

If so, today’s video could help. We are going to help you not only find your stroke type but also identify a putter that may work better for you. The majority of golfers don’t know their stroke type or have a putter that doesn’t match. This can lead to less made putts and increased dispersion.

It should go without saying that the putter is essential. While Strokes Gained methodology has taught us that drive for show putt for dough perhaps isn’t quite as true as we once believed it to be, it remains a fact that you’ll take more strokes with your putter than any other club in the bag.

That’s why finding a putter that fits is essential to scoring your best.

Is changing the balance of an existing putter from face balance to strong arc as simple as changing the shaft ?

Great information!, Used the ping app on a I phone that a Pro had a few years back and found out I needed a face balanced putter. Went back to the putting greens several times over a week to confirm. I highly recommend this.
I just got a new putter and went with the face balance, However the same putter with a slight toe hang was just as effective in most of my trials of both putters.
      Once again good info.

Adam, thanks for the info. When I first watched your no tech putter video that was a real eye opener. I have the cradle and ping app now and have been keeping my handicap. I use a face balanced putter but am fit to a slight arc or sometimes a strong arc. But my putting is gradually getting better with practice.

Do you or anyone one believe that having a face balanced putter helps in not twisting the shaft/face? A fitter actually told me he recommends a balanced face for everyone. Another well established local fitter doesn’t even fit for putters.

Some putters come with replaceable weights…I’m curious what effect changing the weights on these putters has.

For example you can have a 15g weight in the toe and 10g in the heel/or vice-versa. Does this prevent the need to buy a new putter due to the swing arc?

I was fit at Ping using the Ping app last year. It said I had a slight arc, and I putted OK with putter that they suggested. However, I like the feel of a heavier putter and tried the Ping Sigma G Doon mallet which is face-balanced and counter-balanced. Works for me. The Ping app was very useful in finding the correct lie angle so I could special order the Doon. Very happy!!

I am one of the few that had a putter fitting. I was custom fit 13 years ago and was told at the time that I needed a slight toe hang. I used that putter for 12 .5 years. After seeing Adams video about putter tech I researched The evnroll putters and chose the ER3 and have made more midrange and long range birdies than ever before. I was playing to a 5.8 before the ER3 and now I am playing to a 2.1 and trending toward scratch again after four years of increases. I feel like this putter will be the difference for me. Thanks Again Adam and My Golf Spy!!!

Very informative video to help us GS watchers. On a second note, it never fails to amaze me how some individuals come back with stupid-ass comments either because they’re extremely ignorant or possibly because they’re trying, and failing miserably, to be funny. GS is here to help folks with their analysis, studies, and general info and people should be more appreciative of their efforts. Just one man’s opinion.

If you miss 90% of your putts to the left it would seem to me that aiming a little to the right of your target would be a cheaper solution than a new putter!

Really helpful video. I’m in the market for a putter this year and this is the clearest explanation I’ve found on swing arc and toe hang. Two points.

      1. It would be very interesting to compare one of the expensive putting analyzers like SAM Puttlab to the Ping app.
      2. It’s almost impossible to find someone who can do a proper fitting. I live in the NYC area and I’ve been able to find one place that has SAM Puttlab or anything similar, but they want $125 and don’t credit it to the purchase of a club. Anytime I’ve had a driver fitting they waive the fitting fee if you buy. I went to a PGA superstore when I was in Florida and a very nice member of staff watched me hit a few before saying what type of swing arc I have. That was their version of a fitting.

Perhaps if more stores offered a proper fitting service more people would use it.

Love the video with great information. I would suggest that if you don’t have someone close to you that is certified do NOT just go to anyone. I was actually “fitted” incorrectly for a face balanced putter when that wasn’t at all my stroke. Luckily I did some more research on my own before purchasing a putter.

I’ve been searching for a putter that will fit my stroke better.
currently using a Cameron Studio Select 2.6 center shaft. seem to miss most if not 90% to the right. Needing to know what type of putter face balance I would need. i think I have a straight back and through stroke, but not for sure, hopefully, the Ping app would help. but what type of putter would be better?

Hi guys, great video. I used the Ping App which told me I have a strong arc, but my misses are always to the right and I use a face balanced mallet. Based on what you have said, a strong arc putter would make my misses worse. Do you think a face balanced counter balanced putter might help?

      Reply

      JasonA

The MOI of the mallet probably means face is not rotating naturally with your swing. Any arc means that your putter will start open (miss right for right handed golfer) and finish closed (point left of target). I can easily see combination of effects that would have face balanced putter constantly missing right.

      Humm…
Due to the facts that 1/ the head speed at putting is very slow, 2/ the axis around which the head turns is close to vertical and, whereas the head is horizontal and its radius to center very small, 3/ the putter is held and not swung, the interaction of the forces that apply on the head of the putter and that help it close are very very vey small ane only a very small number of golfers on the planet could feel the difference.
Then many othe factors interfere much more , noticeably, the lie -flatter more arc, upper less arc- , the weight of the head, the weight of the whole putter, its balance, and the putter shape and weight.
However, no doubt this is a very good marketing video.

So do you or Ping or anyone have any data on the breakdown of putter swing paths (straight, slight arc, strong arc) for the pros? And for the avg amateur?

It would be interesting to see a difference; i.e. the best putters in the world tend to be straight back putters while the average golfer tends to be strong arc.

Great information. I have the Ping App, stopped using it. Now will look to go back, ( if I can find the cradle:(). Interesting insight on data collection, based on this I need to hit putts from different lengths to see where and how missing.
As putting is the most important part of the game, seems like there needs to be more support.

Another good hi-tech tool for fitting and tuning up your putting stroke is the PuttMetrix (www.puttmetrix.com). It give you a LOT of useful insight into your stroke. It’s similar to those digital swing analyzers, like SwingByte for instance, but it’s made specifically for putting.

Fortunately I have actually been fitted, and I was one of the lucky few who actually fit the straight back and straight through model which I thought I had developed to overcome a timing issue which gave me a case of the yips. Since that time I have been a shoulder rocker for years, and use a large grip to keep away from any chance of wristiness, or worse yet, handsiness overcoming my larger muscles. The good thing about my fitting several years ago, is that it helped me realize that the 38″ counter-balanced putter was actually the best fit for my game. I was throwing away strokes with 36″ andd later 42- and 43″ putters.

iPing app was good for me BUT a few things to note:

the Putter influences your arc. With old putter I was just into the “Strong Arc” classification. But using a more neutral putter meant I fell well into “Slight Arc” classification. Never close to straight-back-and-through regardless of putter.

Ping dropped support for older iPhones – which made my cradle a expensive piece of useless plastic. The could just have left old version on app store.
