First Look – 2014 Cobra BiO Cell (Woods and Irons)

You’ve seen their new Tour Trusty wedges. You’ve seen the super game-improvement Baffler XL series, and yeah, some of you have seen some of Cobra’s New BiO Cell Lineup as well. While we’re still a couple weeks away from the Official release, somebody (I swear it wasn’t us) took the liberty of posting the entire 2014 Cobra catalog online.

For Cobra the early leak is a bit of a gasoline enema; an uncomfortable surprise as they gear up for the official launch of what I can tell you is a pretty big (and important release for them). Last year was a bit of a proof on concept for Cobra. While white worked (for TaylorMade anyway), for a company the size of Cobra, releasing an entire flagship line with red, blue, silver, and orange crowns (while not offering traditional black), was definitely a bit of a gamble.

While I’m not going to lie and tell you that Cobra was a dominating force at retail, the AMP Cell sold reasonably well, and more importantly, what I saw anyway, was that golfers off all ages were receptive to Cobra’s unique take on aesthetics.

The goal for Cobra golf in 2014 is to build on whatever momentum carries over from 2013, and to further convince golfers that the cool stuff they make really does work. The team at Cobra is anything but delusional. They know that competing with TaylorMade, and Titleist, and Callaway isn’t as simple as painting a driver blue, but the Cobra team strongly believes that if they can be part of the discussion…if theirs is one of the 3 drivers you take with you into the hitting bay…if golfers are willing to give their products a serious look, Cobra believes they’re going to win more often than they lose.

BiO Cell Driver

BiO Cell Driver Notes

Taking the bold colors out of the discussion for a moment, BiO Cell is a relatively traditional-looking driver. The BiO Cell pattern is visible towards the rear of the crown (some golfers do love visible technology). The hosel adapter has been updated with a new 8 position cog (sorry, not backward compatible), and SmartPad technology is a holdover from the AMP Cell.

For those who don’t love bold colors, BiO Cell Driver is also available in glossy black.

BiO Cell + Driver

biocell+driver

BiO Cell + Driver Notes

While BiO Cell + is the replacement for the AMP Cell Pro, this time around it’s fundamentally different from the standard model. The 440cc model features a Venollum alloy crown. What we’re talking about here is really next generation composite, which I suppose could make BiO Cell + the next generation ZL (which is going to make a lot of Cobra fans very happy).

Golfers are obviously going to notice the unique crown design. It’s slightly reminiscent of our own Callaway Versa Driver mock-up. The idea is to call attention to that Venollum crown. My gut tells me it’s going to be a polarizing feature, but thus far, among the golfers I know who have seen it, the response to the design is largely positive. It’s grown on me, but I’m interested to hear what you think.

This year’s model is adjustable from 8° to 11° (AMP Cell is adjustable from 7.5° to 10.5°) and  AMP Cell’s Fade settings have been replaced with draw options. 8.5° is very intriguing for me. The shaft is a “real” Matrix 6Q3 (Red Tie), however the custom white graphics are a Cobra exclusive designed to better match the 5 different crown colors.

We’ll tell you more about Cobra’s own CG story when BiO Cell is official and everything.  Stay Tuned.

BiO Cell Fairway

bio-cell-fw2

BiO Cell Fairway Notes

As they did last year, Cobra is releasing two models, a 3-4 and a 5-7. The MyFly8 adapter allows for 8 settings for each model, which gives the AMP Cell fairway the capability to cover what we’d call a strong 3 wood, all the way up to what some would consider a 9 wood.

While we have to hold the specifics for a little while longer, sufficed to say, Cobra is confident they can hold their own with the other big name fairway woods on the market.

biocell-fw-spec

BiO Cell Hybrid

bio-cell-hybrid2

BiO Cell Hybrid Notes

What can you really say about a hybrid? The models (2-3, 3-4, and 4-5) are available. There is some overlap in the loft range which will allow more savvy golfers the freedom to choose their model based on things like shaft length and ideal face angle.

The design is reasonably compact (it won’t easily be mistaken for a short-shafted fairway wood), and looks really sweet. What can I say…I love the idea of blue hybrid to match my driver.

Like the drivers and the fairway woods, BiO Cell hybrids are available in red, blue, silver, orange, and black.

Street Price: $189

BiO Cell Irons

bio-cell-iron2

BiO Cell Iron Notes

What we’re really talking about is Cobra’s answer to SpeedBladez and XHot/X2Hot, and whatever else you want to throw into the emerging distance iron category. The key for Cobra is the perimeter undercut that allows for BiO Cell’s unsupported (fast) face. There’s actually quite a bit of interesting technology built into the BiO Cell iron design (check back after we’re official), but we’re not sure how they’ll fair up against more streamlined designs.

Like everything else in the Cobra lineup, color is a part of the BiO Cell iron story. You can order these game-improvement irons with orange, red, blue, or silver cavity badges.

BiO Cell Irons Combo Set

2014-Cobra-BiO-Cell-16

BiO Cell Combo Notes

For those who prefer hybrids over long irons (and I think most of us do these days), Cobra’s BiO Cell irons will also be available in a combo set. “Real” BiO Cell hybrids can replace 3,  4 and/or 5 irons.

Jesper’s Hat

2014-Cobra-BiO-Cell-17

Up Bill Cap Notes

I might be the only one who cares, but Jesper’s signature Up Bill Cap has made its way into the Cobra accessories lineup. The one-size fits all cap is available in white, black, and tradewinds (how Cobra and PUMA will say “grey” in 2014). Retail price is $26.00

Womens Clubs & Carry Overs

For the ladies out there, Women’s versions of the BiO Cell Driver, Fairway, Hybrids, and Irons are available in more female-friendly colors.

Two year life-cycles are the norm for forged player designs, so not surprisingly, the more player-centric AMP Cell Pro iron will carryover for the duration of the 2014 season.

Have Your Say

Tell us (and anyone who happens to be reading) what you think of what you’ve seen so far. We know Cobra’s clubs will perform, but as far as the designs are concerned, what works for you, what doesn’t?

Most importantly, what will it take for Cobra to become part of your own internal discussion when it comes time to buy your next driver, fairway, hybrid, or iron set?

Here we go again. More of those useless adjustable plastic hosels. When are people gonna learn that they can not change the loft on a driver with those things. All you can change is the lie angle and the face angle. That goes for the fairways and the hybrids.
All they’ve done to the irons is what everybody else has done and de-lofted everything by up to four degrees per iron.
THERE IS NOTHING NEW TO SEE. It has all been done before.
OK, they may play alright but they ain’t my cup of tea

NEF you are obviously drinking kool aid from the Obama gangs punch bowl. Cobra went into my bag with the first Amp driver and now I play the Amp Cell with an excalber +6 shaft plus I hit the Amp Cell 3 wood. And I can and have out shot guys with what I call the over rated clubs. Also let me guess your a Mizzy guy? Lol if so enough said just my opinion.

I miss the old Cobra black and gold color scheme. Maybe because I’m from Pittsburgh? I used to think their sticks were all business and looked cool in the bag, like a jet black Mustang. Now I think they look like starter clubs from Wal-Mart, like a Kia Soul. My wife disagrees, she likes the “pretty colors”. Oh, and I hate Ian Poulter too.

Color. That’s the great innovation. They still make a second rate club. You cannot boost yourself into the first rank with window dressing. It takes actual quality and a golf basis to create a need for a club. Cobra misses by a mile.

Love the look of the bio cell + drivers. It will be my leading candidate for new driver next year. Tough call between the red and the blue. Leaning towards the red. Love it!

Umm, holy crap. That Bio Cell+ Driver is GORGEOUS! I want the white and red one!

Bye bye g15 that I repainted in matte black… Hellooooo beautiful. I don’t even care how it performs. I’m sure it’ll launch like a beast like all the other drivers out there. All I know is that thing is HOT. Hope that white on the crown is matte while the red bit is a glossy finish. That would be amazing. But I’ll take an all glossy crown too.

Seriously. That’s the hottest driver I’ve ever seen.

I own a cobra amp iron set and driver , but i think this time they overdone it. A little too much for the look but im pretty sure they fell great. Is it just me or these companie try maybe too much?Titleist, ping and mzuno are staying very traditional and they look great!

I’m a Cobra fan and have been for some time. I’m a new golfer but an older guy. Picked up gold very late in life last year at 37 and have fallen in love with the game. I live in a great state that allows me to play all year so I probably got more rounds under my belt in 1 year than most in colder areas.

The thing that has really stood out to me about golf since day one has been the Cobra look and feel. I know some guys are a bit more traditional but I love the colors. I like the companies attention to detail and their overall fun approach to the game.

I started with the Bafflers from last season and it really helped me learn the game. I’m a 15 handy cap now and have moved over the the Amp Cell driver and irons. Really loved the look and feel.

In the past year I have owned the R11S, R1, XHot, and Ping Answer. They all ended up being great drivers but after all that I sold them all on ebay and went all Cobra after hitting the Amps.

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know that on a personal note they are really nice clubs to own if you are new. I’ll be in line the day these come out to make sure I grab the first test swings in the cage.

Nice article MGS, you guys do a great job. I’m a big fan.

Stuff I just learned: Jesper has a daughter (or I think it’s a daughter, anyways) named “Pebble Peach Philippa.” I guess “Bing Clambake Bobhope” was a little too too.

The Bio Cell looks great and the shaft offerings seem to be real nice. Should be a big hit ‘cos the Amp Cell was definitely a sleeper this year – lots of glowing reviews around.

I think the Amp Cell irons looked way too feminine for most guys. Just didn’t look right. The new offerings do look very mechanical / transformer-ish like has been stated. Not a fan sorry.

Bio Cell+ driver – unfortunately I think they messed up the crown design. Too much going on!

Bio Cell driver, f/woods and hybrids look great. Can’t wait to see the black driver.

Wow, they did well to keep all this a secret for this long – still, they’d be bummed it was released early. The Bio and Bio+ drivers look great – actually, I think the whole line looks really good, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Bio Cell irons stack up against the competition. For me, the look is a winner.

I have played the amp line exclusively since their intro and truly buy into the what Cobra is doing. I will most likely replace all my woods and hybrids with the new ones as well as giving the new tour trusty a try. Not sure about those irons…I hated the Nike Machspeed and these look damn near identical. I will hold judgement until I have hit them though.

Wow! The Bio Cell + driver looks awesome! Too bad my game is tuned more for the Bio Cell option. Cobra keeps putting out solid clubs that more people should try out. I have a set of S3s that are great irons and will try this generation to see if they beat mine.

I think they look great. First white on a driver I’ve ever said that about. The only thing I don’t like so far is that I can’t adjust the swing weight on the woods. D5 is OK, but I want D1 or D2.

I can not say enough positive things about my Amp Cell Irons so I am not sure how they improved them but I will check them out when they are released. I was hoping they would be offering some more steel shaft options other than the Dynalite’s. It probably does not make sense to offer more than the one stock option since everyone is going to want something different anyway. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Pretty good looking overall, except for the irons. These look really odd, chunky and like they’ve been ‘fixed’ at the last minute. Let’s face it their ugly. It’s too bad as the Amp and Amp Cell irons were pretty good looking too and they had the opportunity to build upon that image, but from the look of it they failed miserably. We’ll see once they come out I guess. All the other offerings are pretty nice and should be worth a look in the spring.

FWs and Hybrids look really good. And glad they have a grey/black colour in there. I will try these. Driver is OK- but the look of the Pro is really bad.

Bad, but not as bad as the irons. I think they look just terrible. I play chunky irons, but these just look like transformers or something. Maybe they will transform and walk themselves to the ball after you hit them?

Funny you say that about the irons. The first word that came to mind when I saw them was transformers. They look like toys. I’m not a fan.

I am however, a fan of the + drivers. Not sure how confident I would feel hitting one but it’s definitely a driver I want to try. I think they look SWEET!

I’m going to reserve judgement until I get to see some in-hand pictures. I think the blue, silver and black look pretty good, but in the pictures in the article that red and orange look really muted and ugly. I did check out the catalog pictures as well though and the red/orange look much bolder (and nicer) in those pictures.

I’m really curious to compare the new irons to the Amp Cell’s that I reviewed this year. I love the Amp Cell’s so if these are an upgrade they must be fantastic!
