First Look – 2018 Callaway Rogue and Rogue Sub Zero Drivers

It appears Callaway is getting closer to launching its next round of drivers. The 2018 Rogue and Rogue Sub Zero drivers have made an appearance on the USGA conforming list.

Notable, I suppose, is that the standard model appears to lack the track weighting system of the Epic, while the Sub Zero variant retains the front/back weighting that has become the signature of the Sub Zero franchise.

The rest of the story, we assume, will be boilerplate Callaway; regular Rogue for the masses, Sub Zero for the faster swinger with a steeper angle of attack.

What We’re hearing

Sources who have seen the new clubs are telling us that Rogue will not be a replacement for the current Epic. This part of the story certainly aligns with the current Callaway strategy. For all the talk of too many releases, the reality is that Callaway has shifted most (and if Epic holds, we can argue ALL) of its lineup to minimum 18-month lifecycles. Consider the Apex iron, which is now over 2-years on the market.

The timing is right for a new XR, but we’re hearing Rogue isn’t that. While Callaway marketing will offer the definitive word, our sources have told us that Rogue is (supposedly/allegedly) better in every way than Epic.

If that makes it Epic-IER, sign me up.

As I’ve heard it, Rogue features a number of enhancements that didn’t make it into the original Epic. As the story always goes, another year of R&D gets you a better driver.

How Callaway reconciles the notion of better (assuming that’s the play) with a 2017 Epic that remains on the shelves should prove interesting. It could be as simple as dropping the price on the 2017 model and sliding Rogue in its place at $500. It could keep Epic at $500 and offer Rogue at $700 (an odd play for a mass market driver), or Callaway could take an entirely different approach.

I’d wager on the first but would love to be surprised by option 3.

On a related note, multiple sources have told us that the Rogue fairways and hybrids are nothing less than exceptional. Both will have glued hosels, and while that can be a cost-cutting decision, for many brands, it saves weight and lowers the center of mass compared to an equivalent adjustable version. This is potentially significant for Callaway as it has among the heaviest adapters in the industry.

The Retail Challenge

The challenge for Callaway will come in trying to retain (and grow) its market share in the 2nd year of the Epic franchise. TaylorMade has M3 and M4 in the pipeline and an apparently healthy Tiger Woods playing its clubs (though getting the notoriously difficult Tiger to switch to a new model could prove challenging). PING’s G400 is strong, and Cobra will be looking to regain a bit of what it lost this season. Owning the driver market won’t be quite as easy in 2018.

Expect the fairways and hybrids to be a larger part of the story (and a key part of the strategy to maintain a leadership position in the metalwoods category), but don’t discount Callaway’s ability to generate fresh buzz for an Epic-IER driver either.

More details to follow, likely soon.

Sitting here getting a chuckle at these comments…….. while I’m shopping for a replacement shaft for my Hyper X Driver….. Which I love to swing. Which I can still hit it onto the fairway. Which I can still shape my shots with……..Besides, a $700 driver still isn’t going to get me a reach around from the girl at the pro shop….. Yeah, I’m good for at least another year. Somebody give me a jingle when Callaway’s technology advances to the point of making the beverage cart magically appear when I’m thirsty, or producing a sani-can on exactly the hole in which I need to take a leak…… Then I’ll gladly pony $700-$1,000 for a driver… Until then, has anyone hit the new Project X Evenflow Black shaft???

We just recently had sales reps for callaway come in and show us these new clubs that will be debuting at the 2018 PGA show. They are beautys all the clubs will have jailbreak in them. The the driver, fairway woods, and irons. They will revolutionize the way we will play the game with 4 times as much forgiveness in all the clubs than the leading forgiveness club retailors. The picture shown above is also just a prototype and will actually have a slightly dark baby blue finish. These following years will truly change the golf industry forever and this time and day will probably be called “The Golf Tech Advancement Era” considering all the new tech put into all these new clubs these days.

I would love to trade in my old model for the latest and greatest BUT I still like my XR Callaway a great drive . I know it’s a few years old but if I followed the golf club Merry go round and treat everything else in my life the same way i’d would have to trade in my wife for a new model every other year and I’d be to broke to buy the new Callaway Rogue.

Sounds great, looks great performance is the same but with enhanced feedback it makes it feel and sound more forgiving..
The epic rogue x iron is a joke… 41* pw haha

Some of the Epics have been pulled from Dicks Sporting Good Sports where they’re not selling because of $$$$ probably some of stores will stop selling golf where its not a factor, since there is usually a Golf Galaxy nearby.

Thanks MGS for all the great equipment reviews. It’s always interesting to see the latest technology. Longer, tighter, lighter, faster, better feeling, larger sweet spot, more forgiving, more workable – it all helps me play better. Especially 4 years from now when I buy a 2-year old “new” club! By then cheaper is also better.

Golf retail must be the worst business to be in! How do you juggle inventory with all the new clubs arriving every 12-18 months? It all seems like a big hustle of trying to sell the false promises of the advertising. I think Ping and Titelist have the most integrity by not bringing out new clubs only every two years. I will keep my Pings for a long time and spend my money on playing better courses.

According to my staff information the Rogue driver & fairway will be available in the Aldila Synergy, Project X Even Flow Blue & Project X HAZRDS Yellow (stock shafts). They also have 3-4 new irons models in the works; replacing the Apex line. Driver, FW, Hybrids & Irons will be released at the same time, as opposed to the sporadic Epic release.

Another year, another batch of new Drivers. I almost bought the Epic SZ last Spring and decided to wait. Be interesting to see how the Rogues perform vs the Epic SZ. Can’t imagine Rogue being more than 3 to 5 yards farther all for the low low price of $700ish. Keep in mind it is 5 yards more for the guys who are already hitting it 290. For those of us who hit it 225, it is 3 yards more. Well even though I will be tempted I think I will pass once again this Spring. But count on me to go hit these when they come out, I will probably drool over one of the new ones but ultimately stay on the side line.

For you people complaining about them introducing new drivers all the time: YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY IT!!! You shouldn’t be replacing your driver until it either breaks or a new one will give you an extra 15 or 20 yards. Remember, the more you hit your driver the hotter the face gets. The face is at it’s hottest right before it breaks.

I think Mr Knuth and his High Heat driver are probably the best driver going. 1) they are not adjustable as most owners almost never change their setting after being fit, 2) designed for the amateur golfer with high MOI (low and back). Since the average golfer shoots over 100 why keep buying clubs designed for the pros.

Of course the next iteration will be better than the last. After every year of R&D, they always are … better for this reason or that.
Myself, I’m tired of hearing it. I assume it’s the only way they make money, but damn … it really gets old. Plus the retail price is ridiculous for an extra 5 yards, if that.

Gee, a look a like of the GBB FUSION driver that bombed in sales. Speaking of sales, you can pick a FUSION up for less than $300. Some are selling closer to $200, come on Callaway, it’s time to slow down introducing new drivers to the gullible public.

It doesn’t look anything like the triagular fusion and it has jailbreak technology like epic, the big difference is in the feel, which of course is sound. I hit both side by side. Didn’t see much gain in distance but did in accuracy and the feel was much tighter and better than epic.

Went into my local golf shop yesterday to look at Callaway and Cobra drivers. Didn’t find much Callaway and no Cobra. Talked to the owner. He has dropped Callaway and Cobra since they both decided to compete with him by selling direct on line. He’ll still special order for you but I want to hit a club before I buy it. He’s decided to carry Titliest, Ping, and TM(also Mizuno irons) Tells me he’s sold a TON of Ping this year, so even after dropping Callaway his sales are up this year. Also saw that Dick’s and Golf Galaxy have dropped Cobra.

So basically their s no one in the area that carries Cobra (metro area of 2 million) so it looks like they won’t be getting a chance at supplying my next driver. Too bad because on line makes sense for lots of products but, for me, not something as individual as gold clubs.

IMO This driver has more to do with a slightly lower price point
