First Look – 2019 Callaway Epic Flash & Epic Flash Sub Zero Drivers
Callaway Epic Flash

Not that a few pics haven’t already leaked via Instagram, but you know you’re inching closer to a new release when the USGA greenlights a new driver. Given that it’s been nearly a year since the launch of Rogue, I think just about everyone who even loosely follows the golf equipment industry could have predicted that something new was in the Callaway pipeline, and so here you go.

For 2019 Callaway will offer up the Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero drivers. And while I don’t have any definitive proof – at least not from the USGA – I’m going to go ahead and assume that an Epic Flash Draw will follow, and I’m not ruling out an Epic Flash Star either, though that 4th one is less certain.

Epic Flash Sub Zero version 1

Callaway hasn’t shared its technology story with me just yet, but the most obvious point to share is that both the standard and Sub Zero models share a rear-placed, multi-position, sliding weight system. We’re all familiar with draw vs. fade settings by now, but it’s also worth pointing out that these types of systems also allow you to more closely align the CG position with your typical impact position. If you tend to hit the ball a bit on the toe, the fade position might generate more ball speed. The same holds true for the draw position for golfers who favor the heel a bit.

As you’d expect all models feature Callaway’s now signature Jailbreak technology, while the Sub Zero models are again differentiated by a forwardly placed weight. This time around, the Sub Zero doesn’t appear to offer any forward/back swap-ability, though the design certainly suggests that additional weights will be available for swing weight and other tuning purposes.

As has become typical for Callaway, the USGA has cleared 3 version. It’s a safe assumption that two of them will be for tour use only, so let’s not all freak out about too many models and whatnot.

Epic Flash Sub Zero version 2

Pricing and Availability

Given recent trends, I would expect Callaway to start teasing Epic Flash in the coming weeks via its social media channels with the official information dropping in early January. I’d wager the actual release date will be sometime after the PGA Show, so let’s call it late January to early February. Finally, while I don’t have confirmation from Callaway, you can expect the Epic Flash series to retail for over $500. In fact, I think $550 is a safe assumption. If that sounds insane, bear in mind that the trends you saw with Titleist and Wilson will continue. Average retail prices are going to be up industry-wide for 2019. We expect TaylorMade will also break the $500 barrier with at least one of its 2019 models.

I miss the old days when golf equipment wasn’t replaced by an OEM until they offered something that was truly better. Now, by the time you unbox them they are “outdated.” It’s ridiculous. I say remove the COR limits and then come and talk to me. If the USGA and PGA want to limit their clubs fine, but we Joe’s want to hit them far and straight as well. I ain’t a pro, will never be a pro, have no aspirations to be a pro, but would it kill a golf ball manufacturer or a club company to cater to the guys who wanna reach a green in reg. I hit my driver 260, and a 6i 170, and I have these concerns.

Funny how all these comments about drivers they have or had and whatever new is coming out, and no one talks about shafts(the most important part of the club). I followed up a Titleist 910D3 8.5 Diamana white 70x with a Epic Sub Zero 9 hzrdus black 75x both 45” and D-3. Guess what they swing identical except the spin reduced on the Epic and 5 mph faster ball speed, result: 20 + yards and accuracy maybe a tad better. So the lesson for all is to be fit properly and never change those specs unless you change. After that all drivers are pretty similar unless yours is 10 years old like mine was.

Spot on! i just got my shafts done on my irons. turns out i went from a reg flex 90g shaft to a 120g stiff flex. the results were insane. i habe the jpx900 still shaft but when i went in for my iron testing they said the shaft is more a reg flex and getting a proper shaft fitting for that would work wonders. people stop spending big bucks on all the new models. the head of the newer drivers are just fine. go get yourself fitted to a shaft that meets your swing and you will be laughing!. only way i would go now.

Prices go up…yeah, yeah – I know, it happens. But until some OEM company comes along and knocks the Callaway, Ping, TaylorMade, etc’s off their thrown’s, then it won’t stop.
For example, Snell, OnCore, Kirkland and a host of others came along with balls under $30 a dozen AND comparable to ProV1’s – and look what happened?!? Titleist ProV1’s are the cheapest they’ve been in years at $39.99 and TaylorMade and Srixon are $34.99 and lower!
The industry needs that to happen with driver’s, iron’s, etc – only when Manufacturer’s see that will they be forced to make a more affordable golf line…
My two cents…stepping back off my soapbox

Pro v1 are 39.99 every christmas, will be back to 47.99 when the new one comes. Same with every other ball on the market, snell and the others hasn’t made a difference in the number of balls we sell at my shop. Chrome soft went up in 2018. The prices you mention are all holiday promos they do every year.

Most people don’t realize you can buy 4 dozen personalized Srixon Z star all year round for an average of $30 per dozen. They do a buy 3 get 1 free on personalized all year round. Would much rather have that for $30 than a Vice or Snell. 2nd most tour wins behind Titleist worldwide.

I haven’t tried the Wilson Cortex but I feel that Wilson missed a trick by pricing it in the same league as Callaway, TM, Titleist.

It appears that they really have something, that when fitted, performs and they could have changed the market but they didn’t. Their club will just get lost in all the other new releases.

After reading about the Cobra F9 Speedback, I’d have to say that their tech sounds a little more sophisticated than what Callaway has done. They also have a milled face but they also have Speedback which seems to be the real mccoy if you watch some of the Youtube videos. Can’t wait to see a head-to-head.

Hey guys – so I’ve been wanting to go for a driver fitting (currently have XR-16 Pro) and now is a good time because Club Champion is running some deals, but you have to do it by January 31, which is no doubt intentional on their end. Question is, should I just disregard savings and wait for the new releases? Or just go between now and then, knowing that Rogue, M3, and the current stuff is good too. Or, per the podcast, it really will be worth waiting for the newest items.

Funny, especially since the China trade war has not even started, and will not for another 3 months or more, so that’s not it; however, Trump may still be responsible in another way since the economy is on fire and manufacturers (of all types) are seeing record numbers in sales increases. The market will only bare what those are willing to pay. For example, if Callaway releases the new epic at $550 dollars and sales are in the tank, then guess what….they lower the price to increase sales. I’m sure that will not be the case though, seems golfers are willing to pay anything these days for the latest tech.

The trade war is on- ask a farmer., And you’re right about the market- it will only bear what the consumer will pay, but most companies are getting away from the huge early price cuts, so it will probably be more gradual. Also, there’s an article in the blog here about club prices being stagnant for around twenty years, and how this is a “correction” so to speak- nothing unexpected here. Main point- if you don’t want to buy it, don’t- but don’t knock the thing unless (maybe even if) you’ve tried it- it might not work for you, but could be great for someone else.

In hit the Epic when it was on sale but found the XR 16 Pro to be more consistent dispersion wise and only 5 yards shorter on the best strikes with both clubs. And at half the price of the Epic, it was a no brainier. Funny things is, I was shopping for the Ping G400 max but the XR 16 Pro was as consistent and much longer…and more than half the price.

In 2007 I dropped $400 on a Taylormade R7 superquad. 11 years ago people, I laugh at all of you complaining of the price of a new driver. Cost go up, technology cost money, R&D cost money- the manufactures have to make it up somehow. I’m in the beer business, 25 years ago you could get a 6pk of low end Meister Brau for .99 cents and a 6pk of Miller Lite for $2.99. You won’t find those prices now.
I am willing to bet the Golf industry has been one of the slowest to increases prices for years.

If you don’t want to pay full retail, buy used or wait until the next cycle comes out. What’s the big deal?

I won’t be buying this Callaway as. Just got the new Titleist and love it.

Like some some of the people who are in their mid 70’s, I have been trying some of the new drivers. I currently hit a Callaway Big Bertha Alpha and have tried all the new drivers which don’t give me more than 2 -3 yards more. I have now gone back to an old driver, the Adams Idea Tech a4 9015 prototype and have now gained at least 10 more yards than my Callaway and the Adams is only 44″ long. Looks like now I won’t be spending my money on a new driver but just onb new irons.

Something about the face is consistent from heel to toe and the hottest it can possibly be without being illegal or cracking. Some reps have said 2-3 mph ball speed increase over epic 1 is what they are seeing. ? Not sure what swing speed they were seeing that from.

Wow, I thought my Rogue was the “best” callaway driver on the market (that’s what the ads said last week, LOL!) This driver cr*p s/b expected, we’ve seen it constantly over the past 5-6 years. I do like the sliding weight back on the club (but can you still adjust for draw bias on the hosel?). At my level (16 index) & swing speed (mid-80’s). I love the lightweight lower launch, lower spin shaft I got w/ my Rogue driver but I doubt this new head itself will squeeze out any more yards. If it does, what 2 or 3, max? For $550?

At some point, the supply of morons will dry up in terms of consistently dropping big $ on a driver. I took advantage of some great trade-in deals when I bought my Rogue driver. But other than than my current Rogue driver (still in excellent condition but now worth only $159 on PGAValueGuide.com), I’ve got nothing left to trade. So that would mean about $380 out-of-pocket if I bought it new once available. If I wait till early-mid-2019, I’m sure I can find it on ebay for less. But then won’t Callaway be ready to introduce the Epic Flash replacement? And I’m sure it w/b touted as “longer/straighter” than the driver it’s replacing. A vicious cycle. I’ll stay w/ my current driver, take a few more lessons & then work out & practice more.

Mike, wait until Callaway Preowned has a 150% Trade In deal for the Flash. You’ll get 150% of normal trade in value for your club if you buy the Flash. They usually run that deal a couple of months after the new club comes out. Currently at CPO you can get $200 for your Rogue, so when the deal hits it would be worth $300 trade in. Just something to think about.

When I look back and count the number of Taylormade Drivers I’ve had these last 6/7 years I shudder- and ask myself what was I thinking ? Was I trying to get nominated for Taylormade’s Fish of the Year Award ? Especially with their Slider model, which a leading golf shop in the area would not allow even $ 50 in trade ! But I did better with the M 2 Druver I had custom fitted by a leading fitting firm ( I like those last two words together ). $ 675 and three months later I snagged a $ 100 credit towards a new three wood, which I really like along with a new driver and two hybrids, all from the same mfg whose name doesn’t start with a T. And now I’m at peace and rest now using the best afore mentioned driver, three woods, and hybrids I’ve ever had. It was an expensive journey.

I’m glad to see the sliding weight back in the line and added to the Sub Zero. I also notice a difference between the movable weight on the standard Flash and the Sub Zero, which leads me to believe the front/rear weighting may be changeable. Many customers wanted the original Epic Sub Zero but had a dispersion issue, & this sliding weight should eliminate that issue.

The picture do nothing to attract me to this club. It doesn’t look different from most other drivers (including the new Wilson). The price REALLY does not attract me to this club. If prices keep going up this fast, it will tempt me to again make my own clubs from components, like I used to do. BERNIEZ40, I agree with you on the 2016 M2. I have a M2 3 wood that I love as well.

Thanks GOLFMULE!—–Yes, I redid my fairways with components too! Snagged an old Adams 9032Ti 14.5* Model for Peanuts. The Aldila VooDoo was a good shaft or its time, but never allowed the 9032 Ti to reach it’s fullest potential.
These heads were always notorious for an amazing feel, but you could tell it was leaving distance on the table. Found a new old-stock Cobra Blur Fairway shaft, which always felt like a dud but delivered unbelieveable results—-I mated those two together, and now I literally have a Fairway Driver that can be hit off the tightest of lies—proving once again that feel does not always equate with numbers. Longest straightes fairway I have ever owned….and I have owned quite a few.
Right now my M2 Driver sports a Mitsubishi Tensei Red Shaft—re-fitted last year instead of the old mid-flight Fuji Pro after trying every new thing out there The Tensei Red is is great for getting the ball airborne, but in these cold windy Winter months, everyone loses distance. Maybe a new shaft on the cheap will change the ball flight for the better once again. I’m going to try a few shafts on a proven head rather than dump a boatload of money on the unknown factor.
Yes I believe in fittings—that’s how I got my M2 and my Srixon Irons, but $500+ the cost of fitting, and welllll……..Better I experiment a little more. It sure worked on the fairway wood.

I would like to propose a new project for MGS. Take 20 heads from the last 7 years (Or from whenever the removable shaft option became available) and fit 10 players into the best club using strokes gained driving, and not just the longest driver.

Create some sort of formula for ranking the clubs based upon their current second hand value. Forget these new clubs, I would like to see how much has really changed over the last few years.

I believe that this was done by Rick Shiels but it would be interesting so see the impact on amateur golfers.

      David,

I’m for something like that, and it would be valuable (or at least entertaining). I’d like to see sort of a low, mid and high handicap version of this to kind of substantiate where the gains really are, and I think it may be more poignant if it’s a test of maybe a half dozen companies over maybe as much as 10 years.

I think what we’d see is that the improvements will be meaningful in different ways for each expertise of golfer, but I think you’ll see a dramatic diminishing returns even for high handicaps over the last 5 years.

What strikes me with this new Callaway release is that I feel like all I’m seeing is an update of an adjustable 2016 GBB with jailbreak. I guess you can say it’s bringing weight adjustment to the Rogue, but unless you are in that very small percentage where 2-3 yards on drive is the difference between money and not, I’d say go get the significantly marked down and still excellent 2017 GBB Epic. Every Roger Dunn/WWG has more of them sitting in bins than you can shake a stick at!

I second that. Give me stats comparing each new generation with its predecessor so I can make a value-based decision. Even after 3-4 years my GBB was nearly as good as Epic but I pulled the trigger anyway. This becomes more important as prices continue to soar: with custom fitting there’s no such thing as “retail.”

I have seen the club-to-club comparison Sheils has done on old vs new. Not earth shattering results. I’m sure a more extensive test will yield similar results. Club distances and control are not much better today. At least not enough to justify the price, in my mind. Remember it is the marketing hype that draws us to these new clubs. When I start reading golfer’s posts on legitimate sites like this that a new club has changed their game, then perhaps I’ll give it a look.

I can’t get excited about “retail” prices like (almost) everyone else does. “Early adopters” will pay full retail and then there will be a cooling of sales and we’ll start seeing sales and discounts. The reductions to the retail price for the “on sale” merchandise will wind up with the manufacturer and retailer selling at price levels that will be more profitable than if they set a lower retail price. This is a classic marketing scheme that started when “discount stores”(Kmart) first came on the scene. I’m surprised golf companies didn’t start doing this sooner.

I know that it won’t be long until I find it used for a good price online because someone will buy it and when it doesn’t fix their bad swing they’ll get rid of it to find some other “magical” club.
I can’t fault companies for the increasing prices, people are buying them after all.

$500 FOR ANOTHER PIECE OF )(*(*&^&*(*() THAT WILL DO NOTHING FOR 99.9999% OF GOLFERS. HEY GUYS AND GIRLS—SPEND HALF THAT ON LESSONS AND YOU’LL BE WAY AHEAD OF THE GAME.

      Right On…

Got the Cobra F7 measured up and everything two seasons back. Hit the Ping G10 longer and about as straight.. We call her the slapper because everyone of my friends had her when they get a crisis off the tee..

Lesson are most improtant after you get half reasonable equipment

Supercomputer/AI created face. Unlike anything else on the inside of the face. Every driver type and dexterity hasa different face. No more cone shape.

The over $500 is going to kill sales unless this thing is crazy longer, which I doubt. I didn’t buy the Rouge because the numbers weren’t that much better than the Epic I already own. What I’m REALLY looking forward to is the Mizuno driver. Nice tour buzz and a $400 price tag. Much more in my budget.

Marty, I’m with you. I play a Mizuno JPX 900, and I couldn’t quite justify the current ST/GT run, but it sounds like the 2019 run is going to be a lot more like the Epic/Rogue with a carbon crown. If they manage to blend the the Mizuno and Callaway worlds in a driver, and I can pick it up later on Mizuno markdowns, I’m interested.

Not surprised to see the $500 barrier breaking. I will be interested to see the testing especially off center towards the toe

Tony, great article is always. Quick question: does it say anywhere the difference between the three sub zero models? I noticed that two of them have a small diamond on them and the first of the three pictures does not. Guessing Tour vs Retail? If the diamond versions are Tour could One be 440 & One be 460?

SO we take the epic from 2018 (now only $400) Add the sliding weight so set up can get you 3 more yards just another $500 please…..let me guess next year we get both side to side weight and middle sliding weights?

There is actually quite a story behind this one. Not just Jailbreak. Will be $529.99 not $549.99 Its all about the face with this one.

Looks cheap tbh. Is the only new “tech” the new adapter where grip/shaft grdphics stay constant?

That tech has been on all the changeable Callaway drivers for a while. The tech is in the face. This article obviously doesn’t talk about it but after seeing the backside of the face in a cutout you will understand.

I don’t normally pick on the looks, but Callaway has historically done a great job with styling and design, and I agree, the track body seems weirdly “chunky” and not refined. They married a Rogue front half with an earlier GBB butt end, and somewhere in the middle, seems like they ran out of ideas.

Rogue Draw will continue in the line and as of now we will not see a Epic Flash Draw as far as I have been told. They will continue to produce the Rogue till early spring, but Rogue draw will go forward till End of next season.

Certainly they are releasing a good product and have top position in the driver category, but it’ll be interesting to see what shakes out. The MGS podcast talking about this was very interesting and has me curious.

Recently was fit (not really fit, just compared other drivers on a launch monitor) for a 9.5 degree stiff shaft M4. Decided not to buy because of the cost until I was at checkout with a different (cheaper) driver and found out I got 1 1/2 times trade in value on the Taylormade which allowed me to get the driver and some “change”. I hit it farther than any driver ever about 2 out of 10 times, mishit it 2 or 3 times out of 10 trying to duplicate the great ones and was just ok the other 4 or 5 out of 10. My older go to is a Wishon 919THI 13 degree with a 45 inch shaft that I hit very good most of the time and every now and then almost as far as the best ones with the M4. On short par 4`s I grip down about an inch and hit it way past a 3 wood. Talk about a faiway finder! The point is this, why can`t I and lots of other people just go with what works instead of constantly throwing away money? So no I am going to resist this new Callaway! And yes the M4 is on ebay!
