First Look – Callaway Rogue Draw Driver

First Look – Callaway Rogue Draw Driver

Call this an addendum to last week’s post, I suppose. A heel weighted Draw version of the upcoming Callaway Rogue has been added to the USGA’s conforming list.

If the count holds, that means there will be 3 versions of Callaway’s 2018 driver. I expect that news will serve to increase the grumbling over too many releases just a bit, but the reality is that with the absence of a sliding perimeter weight, including a draw-biased model for those who need shot shape (anti-slice) correction makes perfect sense.

At this point, our expectation is that Rogue will be priced below Epic. We’re still unsure of what Callaway’s marketing strategy will be, but the company has begun the process of subtly getting the word out on social media.

By every account thus far, the fairway wood and hybrid will be the big stories with the Rogue line. So while I don’t think the approach to marketing the driver will be one of neglect, we could see the company take a RocketBallz-like approach where a competitive advantage with the fairway wood is used to boost sales of the driver in what is shaping up to be an off year for the flagship Epic franchise.

Time will tell.

More rubbish, worse than Titleist in the ugly department. 500 quid for a driver is just pandering to the golf junkies that believe they will get 15 more yards since the last release, but they won’t. Cobra clubs are the best bang for buck out there, and they perform. If they had a recognizable golfer that looked older than fourteen (sorry Rickie) they would be in everyone’s garage.

I switched from TM r15 to Epic last spring and found a lot more fairways over the season. But the big thing for me was the epic heavenwood oh my best fairway wood I ever tried. Long, accurate, and easy to work.

Love Callaway woods! Just not willing to pay top price for anything new. Still playing Diablo Octane driver(42″) and 3 wood. My game is just not good enough to justify buying a new driver and woods every other year. Maybe I should invest in new clubs, as this Rogue draw driver sort of calls to me, but I love the way my Diablo feels off the tee. Hitting 175-190 yard lasers with the 3 wood off the fairway. I just keep looking for the magic ball. Currently, played a TM Aeroburner Pro, and just loved the feel and the distance, with a ton of accuracy off the tee on every hole. Tried a bunch of balls over the years, and like soft feel balls, so tour balls are out for me, as most are too firm for my swing speed and my feel. Aeroburner is in the middle for me as far as softness, but love the accuracy. Going to check out this Rogue when it comes to market!!

I always look at the Callaway drivers with anticipation, and my greatest desire is always thwarted.

My driver of choice (when I use a driver) is a Callway ERC Fusion 10° at 43″. I hit it better than any other driver, including my OptiForce 9° 440cc. These days I mostly use a Steelhead III 13° 3 wood as my driver. I give up some distance, but gain accuracy. Not a bad trade-off.

If the golf designers want to make a driver that is aerodynamic and easy to hit, a smaller head (380-400cc) on a shorter shaft would do it for most of us amateurs, and the pros would love to get it in their bag. Remember Phil’s 2 driver strategy at the Masters? When he absolutely needed to get it in the fairway, out came the Frankenwood.

I hit my razr fit extreme farther than the epic because of trampoline effect of the club face. Jail break stiffened the club face. Newer isn’t always better

I’m just wondering why these golf manufactures can’t be truthful with we golfers about “DRIVERS”. Let’s face it, the USGA has set the limits in size, cor etc. Manufactures cannot exceed these dimensions. Sure you can add 3-4 yards with a driver, but what are we willing to pay? 5 yards is not worth $$$$$.

I will never understand the number of viewers who keep accusing you of being bias. If I did not trust your sight then I would just delete it. I personally think you do a drop dead job. I may not always agree but always appriciate the total effort you put out. Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL YOUR STAFF.

I love Callaway stuff but they took the challenge of replacing Taylor Made way too seriously. “Think we can’t put out a confusing array of equipment? Hold my beer!”
Big Bertha for SGI – Apex for everything else and leave it alone. The Epic is hideous looking and it doesn’t go one yard further than my M2.

No, but I’d love a driver that sits square instead of 4o closed!

Callaway does it again. A FUSION look a like, just a different name. But thats all the company does, pump out new drivers which in the real world are mostly just replacing previous models that did not perform, or bring in the revenue they expected.

      Just a thought!

Hi Tony, why would they market a driver below price if the technology remains the same? Their edge was the Jailbreak system, but if the Rogue has it, why not sell at the same price?

Possibly the lack of weight track, and like you said same technology just a year later.

The heads also don’t seem to be replacements for the Epic offerings, but they augment the catalog.

Thanks for the story. Interesting as always. So, this is not a replacement for my Epic sub zero. Or at least not supposed to get me to open my wallet for this driver?

U have a good question. Well said..
Might be trying to bring down the price with putting the 600.00 driver on sale. Drivera are out of reach for many, I think the top has been reached sales down. 350.00 is a good top of the line price
      Merry Christmas
