First Look – Callaway Rogue Star Driver

Joining the PING G400 MAX on the USGA Conforming Drivers List this morning is the yet another variant of Callaway’s forthcoming Rogue lineup. If you’re keeping track, it’s the 5th Rogue variant to appear on the list, though we don’t believe all of them will make their way to retail.

Based on where Star fits in the Epic line, and the placement of the single weight, we’d expect Rogue Star will be a lighter-weight (senior/low swing speed focused) version of the Rogue Draw, and may be available in the Asian market only – at least initially.

Given that TaylorMade launched its 2018 product last week, it stands to reason that Callaway won’t sit on Rogue for much longer.

More details soon.

I bought two close out RIP’d NV Aldila shafts.
      Put a titles 910 D2 on one
      Ping G25 on the other
      both regular flex

      REALLY liked the 910….

I’m in the northeast so only made it to the driving range once.
But if I had the $500 in my golf budget I’d still have a lot of beer money!
So maybe in a couple years I’ll grab one of those jail things and give ’em a try!

It’s really about driving the cart and enjoying the afternoon…

I think that lightweight drivers can favor people who are lighter. I weigh 145 pounds and sometimes find the standard drivers heavy… to the point when I try to gain extra yards I end up out of balance during the swing. After switching to a lighter driver I feel I can be more aggressive with the swing and still stay in balance. Lighter driver = faster swing without losing control. There may be a matter of swing weight (?) within a give. Driver weight which then would be quite individualized. For me though, the Star line of Callaway makes a lot of sense. Was thinking of the Epic Star. But seeing the Rogue Star makes me want to wait for this one instead.

My XR Callaway Kuro Kage shaft $150 brand new last year, will stay in my bag until the head falls off. I’ve tried latest and and and much more costly greatest drivers out there but XR is by far the best one for me. Just because it’s the old model doesn’t make it the wrong model and it’s only a little better then my older Callaway FTiz . I know there in business to make money they’ll have to wait at least two more seasons.

I’m so for technology that’s helpful, it’s the $500 price tag that gets me!? Next year it’ll be in sale for$299, maybe I’ll buy last year’s model or the year before that if there only a small difference!

Men are like woman when it comes to buying new drivers. If it ain’t being advertised as the greatest thing since sliced bread, then just maybe, they think, it’s the driver’s fault! Never watched a golf tournament where the driver won ONE PENNY! The drama for me gentlemen is on the dance floor and that club will always be the equalizer! That’s if you’re still holing out and keeping your score!

How many top of the line drivers can be invented every other day? NONE? Just bought a Series V Callaway Driver in great shape for $90 and will try it out tomorrow. Then I will compare it to the Epic.. Hmmm

I’m with you. I’m a 1.5 hdcp. I just thought the sweet spot was dead after a half season of rounds(80). And definitely had more distance off hits closer to toe than sweet spot with he GBB Epic Sub Zero. Fingers crossed for ROGUE consistency.

Looks as if they are still running with the “jail break bars technology”. Anyone else notice the inconsistency of the hitting area in the Callaway Epic GBB i.e you know when you’ve hit off centre, it makes a different sound but often the distance achieved is further than a sweet spot hit. Might be just me but others on even lower handicaps than my 8 have made similar comments.

I noticed a lot of inconsistency with any Epic I hit,,
And I must have taken 200 swings with each over the course of at least 3 sessions when shopping for a driver last year,,,
for say a 10, 12 handicapper & up,,, (like myself),,
      find something more forgiving,,,

Are you kidding me. Another product to separate us from our hard earned dollar. What ever happened to lessons, to practice, to club fitting from an independent club fitter no a big box retailer. Just because you part with $500.00 something magic happens.. If you believe it, I have some swamp land in Forida for sale.

Amen. I saw a guy in our club hitting a g400 on Tuesday and an Epic on Thursday. Has to be the club. 10 gram weight will cure anything.

Even at 76 I find the light weight (not a new idea) trend to be of little or no benefit. Perhaps in another 10 years.

OMG – this is blasphemy!! Golf manufacturers are releasing new models EVERY year and different variations of them?!? Who do they think they are? Automotive manufacturers?!? At least this gives the “hater’s” of Callaway (or Taylormade) something new to complain about…

I grew up hitting end loaded baseball bats and find it takes me a while to get used to the light weight of the new drivers. I eventually get it down and still get good results though. I’m 66 as if that matters.

I wonder if there could be a test comparing some of the older models against the new models but with shafts that are matched as close as possible to present times ?If so how would the old compare to the newest version?!!!

I too agree that lighter, more flexible is not always better,,,,
It’s the swing, balance & ability to feel a comfort level with whatever club is in your hand,,,
As I approach 60 years,,, I can still manage about the same distance with my irons & even woods(?) I had 10, 15, 20 years ago….

given that it wasn’t just Taylormade launched the new M’s but that DJ killed it with the driver it was a big launch success

DJ would have killed it with a driver from 5 years ago. There is no comparison between the pros and the average golfer and TM even suggesting that is laughable.

Add me to that group of lower swing speed (88-90) players that doesn’t necessarily love the light weight drivers. The only one I can remember feeling real comfortable with is the XXIO Prime I believe that has counterbalance in the grip end to offset some of the lighter weight. But I’m not 100% convinced it’s provides the best results for me based on demoing of it vs standard weight drivers.

I am a decade earlier but agree that you can have a different feel but I think it can also be a matter of fitting.

      Lefty 60

A question of fitting… it’s not only lightweigt shaft, it’s all about 1) Tempo, rythm, cadence, speed… 2) Distribution weight all around the shaft… and ben point, stiffness 3) Two golfer with the same speed shaft doesn’t make a same flex shaft… General rule say a less weight shaft in CONTROL = more speed= more distance
