First Look: PING BLUEPRINT “Prototype” Irons

Loius Oosthuizen just posted pics of what we can only guess is an upcoming PING iBlade replacement to his Instagram account. Named, at least for now, Blueprint, the new irons appears to leverage the same construction as the current G700 and i500 irons. It’s worth noting, they also share a similar aesthetic, which is part of a continuing trend at PING towards cleaner, more modern design.

The custom tuning port visible in the toe suggests hollow body construction, albeit it a compact, traditional-ish blade shape. That hints at an iron that should offer a bit more forgiveness than your typical muscleback. The heads are stamped Forged, but it remains to be seen if the entire body is forged, or just the face.

Whether truly prototype or not, the irons appear to be plenty far along in the design process. PING traditionally releases product mid-summer and around the time of the PGA Show. iBlade is within its replacement window, so I expect we’ll hear more about these in January.

Have Your Say

What do you think of the new design? Is this a blade you’d consider putting in your bag?

I believe its on fare since the Ping Anser putter has been duplicated a million times by every mfg, that they can copy the Mizuno’s MP line

as always ping delivers with sleek no nonsense design. I have always felt that all the ping products that have been introduced as of late have been amazing looking clubs and they all performed well in the tests that I have witnessed. These blades are no different!

I hate when companies stamp clubs forged that just have the face forged! Welds offer a point of weakness that a fully forged iron doesn’t!

They do look nice but I want to feel the butter

Nice irons, but the same problem as the G700 —- the club becomes easily marred and discolored. Does not affect playability, but they begin to look shabby fast.

The fact that there isn’t a notch in the hosel area tells me this iron will be a true solid forged head

These look very nice, but I doubt the body of the iron is forged. If these are a hollow design as they appear to be, I’m not so sure they are going to have the appeal to the Tour players or better amateur players unless they’ve managed to improve the sound and feel of these compared to the i500 and G700. In that regard, I’m a bit surprised that Ping has followed the same design principles in the iBlade replacement as they have in the i210 – just making a good thing even better. It would be easier to obtain a better sound and feel using the elastomer rather than a hollow design. Maybe they’ve filled the body of the hollow iron with elastomer?

Currently loooove my iblades. The feel so superior to the i500 and G700. If the Blueprints are solid forged then these blades will move the needle – I’m in! (unlikely – see tuning port) If filled with, frankly, any elastomer, then copy of P790/PXG. Still could be a fabulous club. If hollow body, then the difference between G700, i500 and Blueprint is what?

The screw has to be for weighting. And I’m betting these are a solid forged blade. There would be no benefit to make just a smaller version of the I500.

I hope you’re right. You cant get the swingweight changed on the i500’s. I hope that’s not the direction Ping is headed in.

You can get the i500’s weighted – I was very specific with mine and they were perfect – not even all the irons are the same weight and they nailed it. Just an FYI

PIng forged irons know the look classic MacGregor and Ben Hogan among others. A can’t miss in that look, but a little dated?Hollow filled on the in side?

Forged or cast Ping makes wonderful clubs I have hit the i200 and they felt fine but the bottom lineup for me is Ping’s clubs just performed so great. I will look forward to these no matter how they make them.

Ultimately, it is like any other golf club I consider. How well do I play with them? They look awesome and Ping has done a great job as always with styling. Sure, I would love to see these in my bag but, only if I perform with them as good as they look! Can’t wait to try them at my local fitter. I still have Ping Zing’s in my back and just have not found clubs I feel as good with. Maybe, these will be the replacement.

Nice to know i’m not alone in my fondness of my Zings – I doubt i will ever stop using them – I’d still be playing my Ping Eyes if they hadn’t been stolen. I can’t say i care for the style of newer Pings irons – but my Anser driver has been good to me as well – so I’m not totally playing with Dark Age gear. If it isn’t broken – u don’t need to fix it.

My guess “forged” is deceptive. Forged face welded on a cast body.

I like Ping. But, I’ve hit their forged offerings and they still don’t have the feel of a Mizuno or Titliest forged iron. The forging process is a combination of art, science and know how and in my opinion Ping is not quite there, YET.

Love the look. But after playing cavity backs for a while, I mistrust irons the are inconsistent with distances. Nut one and it just rockets. I worry that hollow clubs aren’t as consistent as a single piece of forged steel, which is the only thing I trust.

I totally Agree!! I hit the i500 cause I totally Luv the look…but when I nutted the 6iron 30yds over the green I scored Terrible. I hit them well but caught two or three shots that blasted 15-30yds gone!

Is there any club company anymore who does not have a forged blade iron? It seems that everything old is new again. Everyone is on the bandwagon to improve the muscle back forged iron. This is really good for golf and players everywhere!! Go Ping!!

As with all clubs PING at the moment………… very clean, well designed and if they work as well as they look……… I’m in as I love blades and I think with the built in tech here (which fortunately we can’t see) these should be worth a real look/test and will slide them into my bag with no problems!!! Nice one PING

They don’t appear to have the “cut away” on the hosel that allowed for easier lie adjustment.

Since they are forged, they are soft enough to bend without needing the “cut away”.

The forged Ansers had the ‘cut away’ back in 2013

      Brad

The lack of a hosel cutout could be due to these being prototypes. They were likely custom built for Oosthuizen exactly to his specs.
