First Look – PING G400 Max Driver

Just added to the USGA Conforming Drivers list in time for the Sony Open is the PING G400 MAX Driver.

There’s not much we can say at this time, but in recent PING offerings, MAX has referred to forgiveness and has generally been used on the company’s most forgiving game-improvement offerings. The placement of the large tungsten weight at the extreme rear of the club would certainly suggest that would be the case here as well.

gmax-sitewide

Given that PING’s typical release cycle is +/- 18 months, there’s no reason to think the G400 MAX will replace anything in the current lineup.

More details soon.

Travis~ I hear you as I about made the G400 purchase today to replace my regular G Driver I purchased just last year. So goes the marketing circus. I was hoping PING was different from their competitors with launching new products, ugh!!!

The max will be a 460 cc G400 rather than the three current models at 445 cc’s.
It is a return to the size of the former G and G30 with the “improvements” of the 400 technology.
The NET of all this is a bit more forgiveness/higher MOI, BUT THERE IS A TRADE OFF !!
As the CG is pulled further back and deeper into the head with the MAX, ball speed will decrease just a bit. How many yards shorter is a matter of a player’s swing speed.
Since this new driver may be aimed at the higher handicapper, this may not be an issue.
Ping was “forced” to bring out this additional driver into the line up do to the specializations their competitors are taking catering to every niche player segment.

Interesting, not one comment about short driver product cycles….Or nothing goes further and straighter than my Ping TSI.

I’m currently building a 40″ Titleist 910 with a steel shaft, it’s been a ummm…. difficult project. I built an Adams speed line with a 41″ shaft, the stiffest I’ve ever tried, steel, obviously, LM #’s on it were weird, sufficed to say with a club head speed of 95mph it is my lowest launching fairway finder that’s good for about 213 yards of comfortable carry distance – I am dictating this so please excuse the grammatical errors, I would definitely consider playing around with steel. Also, work at a busy gc with mats on the range and acquire heads and shafts at no cost….

No. There is no MOI limit. In general, the higher the MOI the less potential distance there is.

Remember Square drivers back in the day?!?! Ever wonder why it never caught on!?!? The MOI from those drivers were off the charts but didn’t send the ball as far.

I have one of the old Nike square drivers that had a sticker on it that said 5900 MOI. The G400 has 9200 MOI and the G400 Max has 9800 MOI. Nothing in golf is even close right now. Next best is one of the Taylor Made drivers at 7800 MOI but all are more forgiving than the old square drivers.

I think the idea was that the original G400 was already the most forgiving (highest MOI) driver made and by making it smaller it has the potential to pick up a slight bit of speed and hit the ball farther. Now, they are offering the absolute most forgiving model.

The Golf Club industry has already pushed the limits of USGA Standards for MOI n COR so now it will stop being about 5-10 yards more, and now it’ll be about Accuracy!

Ray, I understand the COR limit–it’s a specific number. Is there a MOI limit?

The USGA limit is 5900 GM-CM^2 (with a tolerance of 100) and it applies to twisting around the Y-axis of the club. In simple terms it’s a reflection of how stable the club is on heel/toe mishits. We don’t have the latest crop of drivers measured yet, but as of last summer, NOBODY was anywhere near the limit. Cobra, PING, Callaway, and I believe PXG, all have clubs in the 5000 ballpark. Nobody has been close to the limit since the run of square drivers. They weren’t pleasant to look at, and the peak ball speed just wasn’t there. They were consistent, but as I’ve said before, also consistently short.

We’re starting to see more OEMs talk about total MOI, which is basically heel toe + top bottom MOI. That top bottom number is important because higher MOI here helps provide greater launch and spin consistency on high and low face contact. As you’ll see in the coming weeks it will be suggested that anything above 7000 is very forgiving – at while that’s true when you look at the market in total – PING’s G400 is already above 9000, and there’s better to come.

I had to check with my R&D contacts on this one.

No published restriction on combined or horizontal axes.

No limit for MOI, only for COR. Totally different things that maybe you should understand before making your next statement.

That’s incorrect. The USGA’s MOI limit is 5900 gm-cm^2 (+/- 100). That applies to twisting along the Y-axis or what we would call heel/toe. I would add that nobody has been close to the limit since the square drivers went away. – TC

Interesting, the SFT G400 from what I have read and heard as well as the standard G400 were both very forgiving and offered ample distance. Wonder how much more so the Max will be, I guess by the added weight, it’ll launch higher and probably has a bit more offset than either of the other two, and possibly offered in a lighter weight shaft?

Between the Taylormade twist drivers and now the “Max” from Ping, we should all be ripping the fairways apart! Well maybe not so I’m looking forward to proving them wrong or hopefully right!
