First Look: Snell MTB Black and MTB Red

In 2015, Dean Snell launched his ball company based on a single premise: Tour quality at a fraction of the cost.

It was never a matter of if Dean could produce a tour level ball and shave 40%-50% off the going rate. He is, according to the bio on the Snell website, a “prolific golf ball engineer and co-creator of the industry-changing, Titleist original Pro V1® and TaylorMade Penta®.”

The question was whether it was possible to succeed in golf with a DTC (direct to consumer) model where consumers buy a product straight from the manufacturer without a third-party retailer, thus eliminating a significant layer of cost. Seems like a wiz-bang idea, but there’s the matter of getting information in front of prospective consumers without spending a ton on advertising, thus eliminating the savings realized by cutting out the middle man.

SnellRedBlack-6

The model isn’t revolutionary, but its application in this portion of the modern golf industry differentiated Snell from competitors. And there was a question of whether it could actually work.

If three-years suffices as a data set, the answer is a resounding “Hell yes.” Snell golf has posted nothing less than triple-digit growth each year and in doing so one could argue has paved the path for a new generation of DTC brands.

The first generation of MTB (My Tour Ball) and GET SUM models has exceeded all expectations and now Snell Golf is releasing its second generation of tour level balls; the MTB BLACK and MTB RED.

MTB Black

While both models are technically new, the 360-dimple pattern MTB BLACK maintains nearly every design element players enjoyed with the original MTB. In fact, the only substantial (if you want to call it that) modification is a new core with 7% lower compression. As core compression drops, so does driver spin, so everything else being equal, the MTB BLACK should spin ever so slightly less off the driver than the original MTB. Otherwise, expect it to play like the same 3-piece ball with a thin, thermocast urethane, cover and exceptional short-game performance.

SnellRedBlack-3

A quick refresher on urethance ball covers: Basically, there are three options – Thermocast, Thermoset and Thermoplastic (TPU). Thermocasting is a more expensive process and historically has only been done by Snell, Titleist and Taylormade (um, notice a theme here?) Thermoset is less expensive, but more common in the industry, and until recently, TPU wasn’t a viable option on tour level balls as the covers couldn’t match the performance of the other two methods. TPU covers (also used in Callaway’s Chrome Soft ball) have advanced significantly over the last 5-7 years and all things being equal, offer more spin off short irons and provide a nice platform for ball coloring.

MTB Red

In eliciting feedback from consumers, the two most common asks in a new ball were more spin off irons and scoring clubs as well as a yellow option. The result is the MTB RED, a four-piece ball with a TPU cover and proprietary “Dual Feel Technology”. Specifically, the two feels are a firmer (I suspect more solid) sensation the off long irons and driver, and a softer feel with more spin on mid/short irons and full wedges.

SnellRedBlack-14

Some may jump to the erroneous conclusion that the 4-piece MTB RED is the likely choice for better players. Keep in mind, spin is only good if you need it. For players who like to flight the ball down or play in windy conditions, more spin may not be advantageous.

As always, Snell suggests selecting a ball based on its performance inside 150 yards and around the green. If you see absolutely no difference between balls, go with the cheaper one and save the extra cash for a tasty adult beverage or pint of Ben and Jerry’s.

The MTB will also be available in an optic yellow colorway.

SnellRedBlack-4

MORE CONVO

Snell isn’t trying to go toe to toe with Titleist or Callaway, but just because the companies aren’t competing directly, doesn’t the mean their products aren’t. In our testing, the previous generation MTB offers similar (in some cases better) performance to other tour-level balls, many of which are priced substantially higher.

Because availability might be the most important ability of a DTC business, Snell ensures it won’t run out of inventory on any of its models. When you sell online, the store is always open, but a lack of inventory means lost sales, which likely won’t be recaptured.

As one would expect MTB BLACK comes in a black dominated packaging and the MTB RED’s is well, quite red.

SnellRedBlackb-1

Pricing will stay the same at $31.99/doz. or a $163.99/6 doz. (which brings the per dozen cost down to a little over $27). Also, shipping remains free.

Pre-orders will start January 15th with initial deliveries expected in mid-late February.

Following on from my last review, games the MTB Black today vs playing partner of 20+ yrs who used a TP5. We both have similar swing speeds with the driver 110 – 115, and similar handicaps 5&6. So what we found was that the 2 balls were almost the same distance off the the, a few yards each way depending on strike. Interesting was that the MTB Black seemed to be a club longer (same lofts) and just as good spin control and putting. My personal opinion is that the MTB Black has a better feel and sound off longer shots than the MTB Reds. Its currently winter here and I’m looking forward to gaming both balls in the summer when more spin is needed.

Winter game Conclusion: Loved the MTB Black all round excellent ball.

Played the Red today for first time, loved them 6I – Wedge. Nice off the putter. For me they felt a bit hard and sounded clunky off the driver face but yardage was fine. ?️‍♂️

Played 9 with the MTB Red this past weekend…Was wary of the higher spin ball but found that my good swings carried great and stayed on course through breezes. Putted very well with nice feedback.
Anxious to try the Black now. Getting older and have lost a little distance but hit a few irons with the Red that made me wonder if it was my first good swings in a long time or the ball. I DO prefer the Red vs the original MTB around the greens and with the putter. Bought a dozen and look forward to playing with it more.

Wouldn’t a lower compression ball spin more, as it’s on the face longer?

Have played the MTB since it was introduced. Good ball and the price made it worth trying. I liked it a lot although I still preferred the Pro V around the greens. The spin off the driver was a little higher than I expected but played some very good rounds with them. Distance was good, not outstanding. Very good ball for the money.
I ordered a dozen reds to see if the little issues I had are improved. Will report back. The black sounds like it might spin less off the tee..

For me the MTB is comparable to the prov1 at a lower price. I have been using it for two years. My only complaint is the wearing off of the Snell logo fairly easily, even after a few rounds. I see others mention this as well, but no answers? What’s up?

Been playing Bridgestones RXS for three years until I read the MGS article about Snell. Bought the MTB and it outperfomed the RXS except around the green. All in all, a very good well priced ball. However, I also read your OnCore article, tried the Elixr and it out did the MTB, especially around the greens. Still, I’ve purchased the Black/Red Dozen Test Pack, an ongoing search for the best.

I have previously purchased Snell balls.
Because we travel a lot in the summer and my wife is unable to gold anymore due to tennis elbow, I don’t get to play that much golf anymore, so I really don’t play that well. I just can’t justify the cost of these balls at this point in life, age 75.

I loved the 2017 MTB ball. I played it all year & ordered another dozen when they went on clearance a few weeks back. I’m excited to see the difference in the 2018 version, so I’ll be placing a sample order for both the Red & Black.
I’ve met Dean & he is a really great guy. Very down to earth & tells it like it is. So I will support Snell Golf in any way I can.

I work at a course as a marshal and have found a few Snells balls tried them out not bad at all. Certainly beats pro v 1’s when it comes to the cost. However I’m in Canada and off the website even though shippings free they still cost 41.99 a dozen. I currently game Wilson duo soft love them, get a dozen for 31.00 Canadian so for now I’ll continue with Wilson but will look for the new snells this summer hit astray at our course.

I played the Snell MTB for a good part of last season. Prior to that, I had settled on the Bridgestone 330-RX, which one can find at Walmart occasionally for $33.99. I think the Snell MTB ball is a better performer around the green and is long off of the tee. For my money, the MTB is a great value and a good price point. I’m looking forward to trying both the the new Black and Red.

I bought the sample pack of MTB and Get Sum. I liked them and found both to be good balls. My only complaint was that I could not tell much of a difference between them hitting into a green. I did like the feel of the MTB slightly more. I would imagine these are just as good as the original MTB and probably better.

For elite golfers who can actually benefit from the use of a ProV or equivalent the cost difference is minimal. For the rest of us, who needs to spend that money on a ball that does not return any better benefit. Drop the price to a reasonable level and more golfers will consider them.

I bought a couple dozen MTB a while ago but had to switch back to B330. The ball itself performed as well as any other tour ball on the market. However, as a neurotic golfer some of the aesthetics ruined me.

The first issue was the logo. Compared to other brands, it’s a bit oversized. I’d assume it’s rooted in a cost saving effort related to the resolution of the graphic. To be honest, that one was easy to get over after a couple rounds with the ball.

The second issue is the seam. I prefer to hit a ‘blank’ ball on the tee as well as any putt. On the tee, it’s slightly easier to ignore since you’re standing a decent distance away from the ball. On the green, it ruined the alignment. I don’t line up the ball, I line up my stance and where I want to start the ball which is thrown off by the massive seam.

I know the request for comments was an effort to provide Mr Snell some pro bono market research, so I’ll make sure to say it is in fact a great performing ball. If one can be made with a seam that isn’t a 2mm equator, I’d order my next couple dozen.

I’ve been playing the “My Tour Ball” aka “MTB” ball since it’s inception and love it. I reviewed and tested this ball for another website and recorded results that showed MTB performed better in distance and spin against ProV1, Chrome Soft and Z-Star – and a much better price!

I just ordered a trial-pack with the MTB Red and Black. Would’ve liked to seen an option to get one sleeve of white and one of yellow for the new Red balls. I’m definitely trying out the yellow version – though I rarely play colored balls. Must be the new offering that’s spurred my curiosity. I expect I’ll be ordering a value pack of the MTB Black in the near future!

Snell’s just aren’t that cheap unless you buy 6 doz… I just don’t need another year’s supply in my garage… $32/doz -vs $39/doz for TP5’s is $.58 a ball… I’m pretty sure I like the TP5 better than all other balls right now and for $42 more for 72 balls (a year’s supply for 52 rounds for me) it’s less than green fees for one round.. or my usual bar tab… Sell them for $20 for (1) doz. and I’d buy some. Bet I’ll find a few soon and try them out for free..

Stocked up last year when they came out with the Limited Edition American Flag ball. However, I play a few blind “go for broke” courses each year and really don’t want to lose the special editions. At this price, it beats ball-hawking for my “go for broke” buddy’s lost Pro V’s.

Kenny B, the comparison ends at “4 piece”. K-Sig: two cores, one mantle, urethane cover.
Snell Red: one core, two mantles, urethane cover.
The mantle layers define spin rates.
