First Look – TaylorMade M4 Driver

M4Crown

Pics of TaylorMade’s upcoming M4 Driver are making the rounds. Apart from the requisite teasing that everyone OEM feels compelled to do these days, we don’t expect we’ll hear anything official from TaylorMade until the first week of December.

The presumed follow-up to the M2, the M4 lacks the movable weights of the M1/M3.

Gone is white, back is a silver that the photos suggest if similar to that of the SLDR S.

There are also rumors of accuracy-enhancing Twisted Face Tecnology.

Finally…Hammerhead.

Hammerhead.

I work at TM and TM said they hard a helluva time improving the ’16 M1 and the ’17 isn’t much of an improvement….that being said the m4 looks much different than the m1, looks sort of a mix of the m1 and ’17 m2 head shape and the slider weight on the back looks like the Big Bertha. Honestly, I’d buy it lol I love my 17 m1 and until I’m not pleased with a TM driver I’ll keep hitting them.

i’ve wondered why equipment companies insist on rolling out new technology each year even if it’s not a dramatic improvement over the existing. do you think TM will ever adopt a model more similar to PXG where there’s no ‘year model’ concept but only what equipment they are currently producing that is best?

Agree with you Jess. I also work at MAJOR practice facility. Hackers come in with the idea that they HAVE to hit a drive 350 yards. It’s unnerving when you “try” to explain to them that they don’t have to hit it all the way with a driver. It is funny that when new products come out, people only buy the big 4( Callaway, Ping, Taylormade or Titleist) without even looking at others that actually fit them better. To fellow players, research the products you’re thinking about, go to a hitting facility, hit a FEW on a simulator, then for the love of all that is golf, go to a green grass facility and hit outside! Hitting indoors will tell you a lot, but NOT ALL. You can get a true read only from terra firma.

Stopped in at my local Dicks Sporting Goods store today ( Long Island NY ). Noticed a rack of new TaylorMade drivers I never knew existed. The RBZ Black driver. It was a nice looking club with a black matted finished head and a Matrix Ozik white tie shaft. It was priced at $220 and the salesmen said it should drop in price in a few weeks. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this club? Can’t find a dam thing about them on the internet. Most peculiar!!! Maybe I’ll l just stick with my ole reliable Cobra Bio Cell.

TaylorMade and Dick’s have had a long-standing partnership, where they got Dick’s only releases of equipment. I remember a TM Burner SuperFast 3.0 that was only available at Dick’s. One of the problems with that concept is that there is no secondary market, so you won’t get anything if you ever decide to trade them in. Plus, although named similar to an existing product line, there’s no real correlation – except for the name.

If you google “taylormade preowned” you get their clearinghouse site for older model clubs, and they usually are having sales. They have different levels of “used” and the best column will be “mint” and you will be hard pressed to see anything that suggests a mint club is anything but a brand new one. You can find M1s and M2s from last year and this year.

I bought the driver and 3 wood. Put my Oban shaft in the driver and instantly my accuracy improved. I honestly couldn’t tell a difference between the Rbz and the M2 as far as feel goes. But I definitely hit it longer and more accurate.

I understand the M2 is an excellent driver, has been selling well, is now 40% less than the M4 and is somewhat adjustable so you can change the feel a bit. So tell me why I’d buy the M4 that has NONE of the benefits or features of the M2? Awaiting your reply in Augusta.

The TM sldr was the worst driver I ever owned. I could not get it off the ground even with it cranked to a 13 degree loft.

I sold that club and was glad to take the $100 loss to get rid of it. Went back to my old R7 and it turned me off of TM. Now hit the Titleist 917d2. may never hit another tm.

I think it is easy to pile on TM right now. They were on top (and a bit arrogant while there) and now aren’t so it is a little fun to get a kick in. If they sell it and make a profit then who cares? The latter is the issue, but I doubt most here care about that when they are posting.

If this were a Callaway release would people be saying the same thing? It will be interesting when the new Epic Rogue drops in a few weeks.

What about Cobra’s F7 replacement? I was recently in a big box store and the F7 stuff was all cleared out (either to completely stop selling Cobra, or making space for the next launch). Are people going to be screaming?

I’ll withhold judgement until I hit it. I think TM stepped back on 2017 M2 vs 2016 M2, but maybe this new one moves the other way.

I enjoy both drivers, and have knocked some decent drives out of them. Game the 2017 model more. I don’t mind the look of the M4, yet will hold back on buying it.

I’m 35. I work full time at a very active “practice facility “ that has A20’s dropping in …often enough. I bought my last driver when the 905r came out. I pulled a fti with “my shaft” out of a trash can. I carry it 268. I carry the ping G 21yds further. I have 10yr old mizunos. And a hot metal 4i. I hit my 5i 177. 4i carries 213.

      I don’t reach par 5’s in two.

      I don’t drive par 4’s.

Distance is not an advantage in most cases. It’s often a detriment.

When I find an epic or g400 for free, I’ll upgrade. Until then, I love playing the game. Nothing is going to make me love it more.

If so then nothing is “hotter” . Great call the speed sole slot HAMMERHEAD but that will only help low strikes approach the max Car limit.

      WHAT IS SO GREAT/better ???

Want to change the performance of your driver ??/ Get a premium shaft ( not an OEM COPY)OR BETTER, take a few lessons so you hit the center of your driver more often with a neutral ora sending strike !!!

In case you didn’t know, the USGA replaced COR Testing in 2004. “The USGA adopted the concept of Characteristic Time (CT).” Most of today’s drivers probably would NOT pass the old COR Test. If you don’t think today’s drivers are “hotter” all over the face, your missing out.

Yawn. Another new driver from TM. How many this year? Yawn. Snort. Get more coffee. Ok, where were we …. oh, right, the new TM driver. SLDR is in my bag and guys in my club were Gaga over the Edge this year, some got Gaga over the new Ping later in the season, and some will be Gaga over this. Want to lower your scores? Get a wedge game and work on your putting. A new driver isn’t the answer. Ask Julius Boros, who me believes is the guy who coined the “Drive for show, putt for dough” line. Take your three wedges to a field and hit balls with each, and measure the results and know precisely how far each goes with a full swing. Then develop a consistent repeating 75% swing and do the same thing. Now you’ll have six different distances that you can dial in when you need to. That’ll help your game more than another ten yards off the tee could ever do. And btw, you won’t get ten more yards with this. Unless you’re still using laminated maple.

My “buy cycle” for new drivers is settling in at about 3-4 years. That being said I still gamed 2007 Burner this summer when I was looking for consistent down-the-middle drives after struggling for a couple of weeks. That one seems to settle my swing down. Downside is that it’s a little shorter than my newer club(when I hit it well)….

Also, like a previous comment mentions – this could be the equivalent styling of the SLDR-S which gave you the head, without all the customizable options, such as moveable weights and adjustable lofts.

The irony of the TM drivers they are often copied ( not directly) by some of their competitors. TM makes good stuff, as does other brands. They have a huge market share like others, TM sells above and below the equator, so the release of some product does over lap. The SLDR for example sold at retail for close to 20 months, retailers loved this, yet the perception of the ill informed was that it was 6-9 months.

New ownership’s first driver release? Visually underwhelming. There’s no visible tech that makes the consumer think “yeah, this is different”, the color scheme is tired (somewhere between a BMW and a Callaway XR), and honestly, the Hammerhead thing feels like it’s been done before.

If this is what we can expect from the new TM I predict they’ll be on the market again soon.

Let me guess,,,It’s magically 10 yards longer than previous models. If you like Taylormade Drivers, Geocoustically buy yourself an R7 Superquad and just upgrade the shaft. Quit wasting your money on marketing gimmicks.

As a former job shop machinist and structural steel fabricator, To me it seems like their just redesigning the same tool over and over again and that applies to every equipment manufacturer.
