First Look – TaylorMade P760 Irons

Jason Day has joined Brendan Steele, and Loius Oosthuizen on the list of Tour Pros presumably tasked with leaking photos of new gear from the 2019 catalog. In an Instagram live video yesterday, Day showed off TaylorMade’s upcoming P760 irons.

PGATour.com’s Jonathan Wall grabbed a couple of screenshots of the iron that will, as the name so obviously suggests, between the P750 and P770 in the TaylorMade lineup. Early judgment on the cosmetics hasn’t been positive, but I’m a firm believer in a wait and see approach. Sometimes photos don’t do products justice.

Wall also shared some additional information from TaylorMade’s Tomo Bystedt.

Speed Foam is at the core (sorry) of many of TaylorMade’s recent technology stories, so it’s not surprising to see it trickle from the P790 into what I’d describe as a more traditional iron. 2018 was the year of the Players Distance iron. 2019 is shaping up to be the year that hollow-body (or filled hollow-body) designs make their way into more player-centric iron offerings. While golfers who play irons from those categories aren’t necessarily looking for more distance, if you can get it without sacrificing launch conditions, consistency, or control, wouldn’t you take it?

Additional details will surely follow soon, but it’s reasonable to expect that the P760 will retail for around $1100 (+/- $100) in either direction.

How do these injected irons compare with the feel of soft Japanese forgings.

The P790’s are such good looking clubs. I thought TM turned a corner somewhere. I guess I am mistaken. These are not pleasing to the eye.

I finding it rather sad that a number of posters here deem these irons “ugly” on the basis of ONE SINGLE PHOTO… without even seeing the most important view: the look at ADDRESS. You really care what the BACK of an iron looks like? This minds me of posters who see a picture of the BOTTOM of a new driver and — again — claim that it’s “not for me… too ugly.” As if anybody really cares about the bottom or the back of a golf club. Here’s my suggestion: wait until there’s a top view and wait until you can actually DEMO this new iron. Only Then should you declare your opinion of TM’s new offering. (And, of course, this goes for EVERY new club introduction.)

You can say that about a car. Who cares how it looks like from the outside, its the interior. Aesthetics matters to some if not all. You don’t, but others do. For me, it looks ugly and cheap. To each their own.

With the “$peed Foam” in these irons, they will likely cost a pretty penny to buy. And, if you’re spending good money for clubs that you are going to have to look at both at address AND in the bag – then you probably want to like all aspects of them including the performance, feel, AND looks.

Most people like to drive cars that are reliable, perform well, are cost-effective and also look nice. Then, there are people who wouldn’t care to drive a beat-up, bondo filled, wreck of a car as long as it runs like a champ.

Ugly is ugly. They might perform very well indeed, but they are still ugly. Some people can get past that, others can’t.

Bought a set of TM Rocketblades for the wife in 2014. She’ll mever give them up. Might have been one of their better looking GI Irons ever. As of to day everything they make is ugly!!!!

Man…I don’t even know what to say. How about… use that $1100 and buy Mizuno.

Pathetic that golfers are still succumbing to the TM effect. Ok I get it, their woods are good, but if you’re bagging their irons or considering supporting a product like this – you’re wasting your money.

Not sure why you would say that. Everyone I know who hit the P790 wants them (some bought them). I’m a Ping guy myself, they just seem to fit my swing, but to each his own. You couldn’t possibly know that Mizuno fits everyone better than TM does.

I hate that TM and the major brands feel the need to do annual releases. The P790 seemingly already has everything, and is definitely the better looking child in the family!

Then why do you care? If you’re happy with P790s, their new releases shouldn’t affect you.
As a business they need to still develop new things to sell and feed many families.
I stick to my 790s and have no need for 760s, but many are looking for them

Would I take it? NO! I want distance control and workability, not hitting a 200 yard pitching wedge! A rediculous philosophy unless advancing age is robbing you of distance. You cannot buy a good golf game, it must be earned by practice both mental and physical.

I’m completely in the minority here, but I think they look pretty good. I’d certainly give them a try when they’re released.

These look bad. I thought the P750s looked decent. I saw a comment on Instagram that said these look like the square strike wedge and had to laugh. They are losing at least the aesthetic iron game to Mizuno, Ping, Callaway, etc. and are losing the craftmans touch. Not sure what the sales are, but hope Taylormade gets hit for a rush job and the consumers’ voice is heard. Not sure if I agree with putting speed foam in these. Will have to see testing and how the numbers play out.

I wonder how many companies would be at a loss if they did not bring in all their so called ‘goodies’ like speed foam filled cavity backs and if any of them could do away with that other stuff and design some straight forward, clean clubs with tech designed weighted soles and power ribs and if need be help that along with weight screws in the toe to help with draw or fade biases. I am busy with this at the moment but don’t hold your breath…….. financing this sort of thing does not come easy as most people couldn’t care…….. pity!!!

I can’t figure out why TM keeps making these ugly irons. I thought the P750s looked bad, but these are worse. Good luck with that

I’ve played Taylor Made clubs for 25 plus years, starting with my PGA apprenticeship in Japan, and am disgusted with the route they’ve gone! It’s all about money rather than quality! These latest irons are a product of “rush”…that’s it! Taylor Made needs to fire and revamp their whole company!
