First Look: TaylorMade P790 Black

“Paint It Black” isn’t just a depressing rocker from the Rolling Stones. It’s now a full-fledged movement by OEMs looking to inject a little life into irons in the middle of their product cycle. You can count Callaway, PXG and Hogan among those who’ve introduced black versions of current product, while Cobra made black the primary color for its King Forged TEC and King Pro irons from the get-go.

So why shouldn’t TaylorMade get in on the fun, too?

Especially if it gives legal rival PXG a wee bit of a tweak.

TaylorMade P790 - 3

The Dark Side

Yup, TaylorMade’s P790 distance iron, the one that started all the legal hubbub with PXG, is now available in black, with what TM is calling a “premium high-gloss PVD finish.” All-black True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 shafts round out the look, which TaylorMade says – honest to God – “inspires and intimidates.”

There’s no need to give you the SpeedFoam-heavy rundown on the P790 (you can read that here), but leave it to TaylorMade to spin black as a performance enhancing hue.

“The new appearance brings out the soul of what P790 truly represents by creating a look and feel that inspires an aggressive mindset, enabling the boldest of players to attack the course with confidence.” – Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade Director of Product Creation, in a company press release

That added boldness and confidence does come at a price. The standard chrome P790’s, which presumably are now for the cautious and meek, retail at $1,299.99. Aggression and confidence adds three bills to the price tag, as the new P790’s in black go for $1,599.99.

TaylorMade P790 Black -1

Baby’s In Black

When it comes to finishes, there’s black and then there’s black. The biggest concern is how long the finish actually stays intact, and TaylorMade has chosen the low road by using a PVD finish. Wear tests show black oxide or black nickel start showing wear after roughly 100 to 300 cycles, or pretty much once you take the plastic off. Diamond Black Metal – used by Cobra and Hogan –actually penetrates into the steel and is incredibly durable, lasting upwards of 4800 cycles before showing wear.

PVD, a relatively thin coating over the steel, lasts roughly 700 cycles in wear tests. It’s pretty much the least expensive way to go black, which is fitting as TaylorMade is positioning P790 as a sort of PXG Light. For the record, Callaway uses PVD on its Rogue Pro Black irons, while PXG uses Diamond-Like Carbon, or DLC, for the black versions of its irons.

TaylorMade P790-2

TM claims P790 is #1 in the players distance iron category, a relatively new classification for irons that go far but don’t necessarily look or feel like Game Improvement or Super Game Improvement sticks. Others in the category include PING’s G700 and the Callaway Rogue Pro, Titleist AP3 and Wilson C300.

Overall, TaylorMade remains #2 in irons, behind Callaway.

Price & Availability

As we said earlier, the P790 Black retails for $1,599.99, with the all-black True Temper DG 105 shaft and black-and-organge Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip standard. They’re available on the TaylorMade website starting today.

TaylorMade P790- 4

It sure looks as though “Paint It Black” has gone from fad to trend with OEMs and, realistically, it does breathe a little new life into the second year of product cycles. And there’s always a nice little price bump that goes along with it, which OEMs always welcome. Sure, it’s a gimmick, but it’s better than flooding the market with new irons.

And hey, black irons with a red putter? It’s Tiger’s Sunday dress code.

So, thoughts on the new black P790’s?

I think most people whom bash black irons don’t know what PVD finish is and how it wear. I have Callaway Apex CF16 Black which is PVD. Unlike other black finish, it look better and better as it wear. It took about a year and more than 200 rounds later to start showing it’s true beauty :-)

Is it just me or do they original ones look better? Don’t get me wrong I like most black irons but these don’t do it for me. Also the quality and longevity of the black is very questionable. Do yourself a favour and go cobra or hogan if you want black irons.

These really look stealth but………………I have yet to own a set of black irons that don’t begin to show wear marks after the first round. PVD is not the worst but close to it. If your going to charge $300 more per set (and I would pay it if they didn’t wear so doggone badly) then put a finish that lasts the 4000 on them. By the way what is a cycle? A round of golf, a stroke, what?

Just another way to get into your pocket, but,,,, they are very cool and great looking. My favorite of all my 7 sets are the Wilson C100s, Black with RIP Black shafts. But being a leftie I have no access to them, but no problem caused the Wilsons are great clubs.

The price that TM is asking it would be better to buy these irons with the currency difference of 35% between the US and Canadian dollar. At $1,600.00 US ( with the conversion it comes to $2160.00 CDN) while TM is asking $1,900.00 CDN in Canada. You would save a couple of hundreds dollars off the US price.

P790 are wonderful clubs. I would not badmouth them till you try them. The black is great looking. Really Jim, 195 yard 9 iron? Have i heard of you on tour? Why people have trouble with Taylormade is beyond me as every company does about the same thing and MOST of the time like other companies their products work. I carry a mixed bag. Titleist driver, Ping 3w, Cobra hybrids etc… but the P790 irons have dropped me from a 13 to a 5. What else is there to say.

Think its obvious now why Taylormade was bought by KPS Capital. A company that specializes in poorly run businesses….. Its like they are trying to catch bluefin tuna by just throwing tons of rotten chum into the sea with no hooks anywhere to be seen. Only thing thats holding that business up is the loyal fan base that was built years ago. Dont get me wrong they offer a few good products and im not a total basher of the brand. The design does look really good but at $1,600 plus the tax man for something thats going to look like crap in a month? NAH im good with my Cobras that have DBM (under $1k out the door) and after 1.5 seasons show almost ZERO wear.

I guess the time has arrived. No more hype on new improvements can
be made on the irons so now all TM can do is add color. I guess the black color will tell you if you are hitting the ball in the center of the face
or not. Better than using tape on the face?

I just bought the Hogan Ft Worth BLACK irons. Bad ass! Black Recoil shafts too. As noted in this article, they use the DBM process. Not only does it last longer, but it is said to make the steel (grooves) stronger meaning the grooves will last longer. AND, they don’t cost a penny more! How low will you go, TM?

The Marketing Department must have run out of the things to do!

I have been playing Black Cleveland Wedges for as long as I can remember. They look great to start with but after a half a season the 58 * I use as a sand wedge starts to lose it’s luster.

Probably about the time that the grooves start their slide towards ineffectiveness. I put up with this because I like the black. It also serves as a not so subtle reminder that I need to replace the 58* anyway, probably sooner rather than later.

But though my 58* is basically a consumable, that needs to be replaced probably more often than I do, I don’t consider the rest of my irons to be in that category.

In any event I would not pay more for black wedge that I replace every few years. So why in the world would I consider paying such a hefty premium for irons that presumably would start looking shoddy a lot earlier than I would ever even begin to consider replacing them?

The irony is I have only one TM club in my bag, a putter, the new TP Mullen 2 and it’s a good putter and looks nice. I guess I’m the opposite of many. Everything else is Ping. I believe too many people want to play with “what I want people seeing me play” rather than what fits them. I hit the P790’s but settled on the G700’s, a little easier to hit and a little more distance. The stock shaft is the P790 is probably not going to work well for the target audience as it launches too low. A better stock shaft would have been a KBS 105 or Nippon Modus 3 105 if that is the weight category that TM wanted. TM wouldn’t even discuss putting the Nippon shaft in the P790 when I looked at them.

Like I mentioned in the Callaway black iron write-up.. it’s really a shame that OEM’s are using this angle on “none-the-wiser” consumers. PVD finish is just another name for “fancy black spray paint”. Sure they might look cool but that look quickly gravitates to cheap POS once the finish rubs off after the first range session. It’s obviously inexpensive for the companies to apply the finish, but to bump the price up in a manner that says “you’re really getting something special” is just a shameful way to make a few extra bucks.. And when this finish has been around for quite some time and is notoriously known for being cheap and non-durable.. this really says something about the character of the company. The sad part is that many consumers just don’t know any better. If a company like Maltby can make a club with a premium DBM finish and not stab a guy through the neck to sell a set.. extra shame on the big box bullies for trying to take peoples lunch money like this.

23% premium for a PVD finish that shows wear as soon as you take the plastic off.

TM has a winner on their hands with the P790 and they shouldn’t cheapen a premium club with a finish that looks good until you hit it.

Unfortunately, even PING is doing something similar with their hydropearl finish, which looks terrible after a few weeks of use.

I think this cheapens their brand.

DLC coating is usually about 4-5x more expensive than PVD, so let’s say TM added only $900 (3x (300)) more for the black instead of $300. Total $2,199. Would you buy then?

@JOE – No, I wouldn’t pay that much – though I think there might be some fuzzy math in your figure. I’d simply buy the Cobra King Forged MB/CB set that somehow mysteriously manages to keep the price below $1100 despite using the more expensive DBM process.

Reality is that they looks awesome in black, love the tungsten bar fitted in the back which should get balls in the air pretty quick and the wide sole so should be a good offering – at the price I’ll stick to my bottom weighted power bar Echelons (which hardly anyone knows) but will probably still stick it pretty close to where the P790’s hit it……… but then again to have those black 790’s in the bag would make you walk a bit taller…. !!!
