First Look: Tommy Armour Atomic Driver

We’ve reached the point in driver discussions where $500 has become the norm for flagship models from major OEMs. It turns out, not everyone is thrilled with this new reality, and one byproduct is a growing list of worthy alternatives which don’t require buyers fork out extra cash to subsidize major OEMs marketing and advertising budgets.

At $399, Tommy Armour’s Atomic driver looks to relieve some of the price point pain and give golfers plenty of performance in doing so.

For starters, the Atomic features a DAT-55 titanium cup face, which is 25% stronger than standard titanium and is routinely used in top-tier JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) drivers such as Miura’s Hayate. Marketing materials state the DAT-55 allowed engineers to forge a thinner and lighter face, which when combined with a cup face construction, allows for more face flex (higher CT) and improved ball speeds, particularly on off-center strikes.

The multi-material carbon crown is 40% lighter than the previous edition, which freed up 10 grams of discretionary weight which has been used to move the CG lower/deeper in the head. The net result is improved heel-toe MOI (+150 points) higher launch (0.6 degrees) and lower spin (-200 RPM) as compared to the 2018 TA1.

The adjustable hosel on the Atomic driver has six settings as compared to four on the TA 1, and aerodynamic Airfoils dot the topline, sole, and heel to reduce drag by 20%. Considering the depth of high-performing drivers in our recently released Most Wanted testing, the Atomic driver ranked in the top 1/3 of the field for ball speed and shot area – not too shabby.

The stock shaft is the Project X Even Flow Max Carry. Project X HZDRUS Smoke Black and HZDRUS Yellow are available at no upcharge.

Somewhat quietly, the Dick’s Sporting Goods house brand continues to impress and evolve. The 2018 TA driver performed surprisingly well in our 2018 Most Wanted Driver Test and its TA Impact Series #3 Alignment tied for 1st in our 2018 Most Wanted Mallet Test. Additionally, the Over N’ Out Wedge ranked as our Best Value for 2018. What’s becoming clear is that Dick’s is determined to put forth the required resources to reinvigorate the Tommy Armour brand, and because value never goes out of style, this might be precisely what cost-conscious consumers are looking for.

The Tommy Armour Atomic line of clubs will be available at retail beginning March 15th.

Who in the world thinks $399 is any kind of bargain?!? This is still just silly. Especially when you can still pick up a new G400 driver for $299 or less when stores run sales or promotions.

I have the TA-1 driver and it is a great driver. The irons are just as good. I’ll wait for the price to go down as I normally do. I’m never one to rush to the store or demo day and shell out MSRP +++. I do know though, that the Tommy Armour brand is making a comeback so do not dismiss it, just wait until the price is lowered and it was simply an easy decision when I purchased the TA-1 driver for $199 and got a hybrid for free.

What would be the cost of this driver if Dick’s did not have an old OEM name to put on it? How much would this driver sell for if a direct to market bought it from China and sold it over social media and on line? If quality golf balls can sell for less then $28 a dozen that compare favorably with the ProV why not a driver that compares favorably with the big OEMs sell for $199 or even less?

Question, if Dick’s sold this driver for $199 would the big boys (Ping, Callaway. Taylormade etc) pull there products out of Dick’s?? Dick’s maybe making more on this driver at $399 then selling two of the big OEM’s drivers.Think?

Are they providing the true aftermarket hand made evenflow red shafts or are they a “made for” version? The true version shaft retails for around $300.

$400 for what appears to be a very competitive driver? Not bad. But to me, it just further reinforces the stellar value of the $300 Tour Edge Exotics EXS. Three Hundred Dollars? … Astonishing!

Not sure if saving $100 means that much to someone who doesn’t buy new clubs every year. I’d have to hit it (launch monitor / range) vs my current driver (or against other brands) justify the technology claims. Plus, the $500 drivers that came out in Nov, for those of us in the Northeast, you’re barely playing till March. Wait until May & buy that same new-condition driver on ebay @ 25% less than MSRP. Drop down to a ‘mint or similar’ condition one & you’re at 35% below MSRP.

Exactly what I request people do when I’m fitting them. Bring in their old driver to test against a new one. If a new driver can’t increase your distance by 10-20 yards, why spend good money on a new one?

Well, sometimes just shaking things up can give us a boost. I don’t buy new clubs often, but the process of researching, testing, and ultimately buying is a genuine thrill for me. Then there’s the joy of unboxing brand new equipment, and the anticipation of the first trip to the range. Finally, nothing makes me want to get out and play more than putting a new toy in the bag.

Why not start the price $200 and after 6 month $ 100 I’m not saying this is a
bad driver but Golf clubs are like Euro auto’s over price but when people see
you driving one they think that guy has money. Tommy Armour once was a
player in golf irons then turn into a Hugo it’ll take time to regain and one high price driver won’t do it.

This TA Atomic Driver is on sale now at some Dick’s Sporting Goods stores. In looks alone, it compares very favorably to the Epic Flash and Taylor Made M6. Dick’s has a great display for Tommy Armour Golf just like Callaway and TaylorMade. Now that Golf Spy has let us know that the Atomic is the real deal in drivers, a trip to Dick’s to save over $125 vs. the Flash and M6 is in order. You won’t be embarrassed or thought of as a cheapskate when you hit it as far as that heavily advertised equipment.

It’s nice to see a quality driver at a lower price point than the big guys. But I’d hardly say $400 is low. I think that manufacturers have modeled themselves after drug companies and they think we are all addicts. Unfortunately, they may be right.

I’m all for trying it out and actually dig the small ridges toward the face, but I’m not sold on the long ridge on the center of the crown. Much prefer a smoother look.

Funny thing those air disruptors on the top and sole – the aerodynamic advantages of those cannot be ignored with a 20% increase in airflow – that is like lowering the CD factor of a normal sports car to that of a supercar plus nature uses them to better airflow and lift so I think TA are ahead of the other OEM’s with this innovation…….. yes others have them but not both sides!!!
