First Look: Tommy Armour ATOMIC Driver

Add one more to the growing list of 2019 drivers. The 2019 Tommy Armour Atomic has been added to the USGA’s conforming clubs list.

It’s reasonable to assume that the Dick’s house brand won’t get the kind of attention in the driver space that Callaway and TaylorMade will over the coming months, but we were pleasantly and repeatedly surprised by the performance of the Tommy Armour brand throughout this year’s Most Wanted testing.

Here’s the quick rundown.

  • The TA Impact Series #3 Alignment tied 1st in our Mallet Test
  • The TA1 Driver had a surprisingly strong showing in our Driver Test
  • The Tommy Armour Over N’ Out Wedge was our Best Value in the 2018 Most Wanted Wedge Test

That’s not a bad showing for a brand whose products typically retail for significantly less than mainstream offerings. For golfers seeking performance on a budget, across the board, Tommy Armour is tough to beat.

The USGA photos suggest the Atomic will be hosel adjustable, and will again feature multi-material construction (e.g., carbon fiber crown).

More details to come, but we certainly expect Tommy Armour will be fully represented in 2019 Most Wanted.

I just purchased the TA1 driver. $200 and came with a free hybrid. DEAL! Best part. Driver had PC Hzrdus Yellow 6.0. With Hzrdus Yellow this driver is longer than my G400 Max with Tour 65 and had better disperison. It also is as long or longer than my Epic Sub Zero and has better dispersion and sound.

      #winning

The only place that this driver slightly disappoints is in the head cover. It does not fit well and looks a bit cheap. Easy to rectify though.

I 2nd that motion my frugal friend! There’s definitely a lot of room and need for modest priced clubs that perform! I’d say off the top of my head, Wilson Staff and Srixon have a couple clubs in this class, but I’d certainly welcome a company devoted solely to offering High Performance/Modestly Priced equipment. Other than a few examples, customers in this market have to rely on buying used gear, 2 or 3 years old.

Have the TA1 driver after multiple markdowns of a seldom hit demo model, stiff shaft, etc. Ball speeds with TM TP5x within 1% of premium drivers plus old reliable, Titleist 915d. $70 on sale at GG.
      Better dispersion overall as well.

I am so stuck between so many great choices right now (Ping 400, Rogue, M4, F8+ etc…) on clearance and waiting to see what comes for a few hundred dollars more next year. I can’t imagine getting TOO much more for the money, but it’s so hard to sit and wait.

If Dick’s can go out and get product from China etc. and compete with major brands if at even a tiny level, how long before we see some direct to the public internet club companies like we see in golf balls. Not just the funky infomercial clubs but clubs that perform at a level to be considered very playable just as the golf balls have shown.

Ben Hogan is already a great option direct to the consumer!

I run a golf shop, and deal with a company called The GolfWorks. Check out their Maltby brand clubs. The performance and value are great!

I also bought the mallet putter last year and it works perfect for me.
I hope they make their future drivers and irons more low key
( satin finish and no bright shiny color) let the product speak for itself.

I can’t wait to see how the TA driver performs against the big names, I picked up the TA mallet putter after seeing your most wanted mallet putter testing, and it’s by far the best putter I’ve ever owned.

Too bad they treated all of their former golf staff like shit, fired them, and now they don’t have anyone to sell it.
