SHAFT REVIEW – Fujikura FUEL {I’d Bag That!” – Approval}

SHAFT REVIEW –  Fujikura FUEL  {I’d Bag That!” – Approval}

Introduction

People often refer to the shaft as “the engine of the golf club.”  Fujikura prefers to think of the golfer as the engine, and their new shaft, packed with their latest construction technology, as the Fuel.

With the new Fuel shaft, Fujikura is unveiling its Fuel Rod Technology.  This is comprised of a Combustion Chamber and a Load Injector Tip.  If that sounds to you like a lot of crap that a marketing department made up…you’re probably right.  But here’s what matters: this shaft is freakishly straight.  If you’re interested in hitting more of your second shots from the short grass, you need to keep reading.

Notes, Feel, Price, and Miscellaneous

For this review, I want to jump straight to the feel of the shaft, because I love it.  The first thing I noticed with the Fuel was that it’s slightly counter-balanced: you feel a bit more weight in your hands than in the head.  During the swing, the Fuel can be described as butt-soft and tip-stiff.  I felt a really nice “load” of the shaft in transition and a decent kick in the downswing, but the tip felt absolutely rock solid.  There’s very little torque-y feeling to this shaft, even in the lighter weight version.

The Fuel will definitely not be mistaken from any of the flashier shafts on the market: it’s a basic black shaft with orange graphics.  The one unique visual feature of the shaft is the transition from a shiny carbon-fiber black to a matte black.  While I was initially pretty underwhelmed by the look, it did grow on me over time.

The Fuel will be available in 50, 60, and 70 gram versions with flexes ranging from R2 (senior) to X-stiff.  The MSRP will be $225.  There will also be a complimentary hybrid shaft in 85 gram and 95 gram versions.

Performance

For the Performance testing, I hit each of the shafts in a Callaway RAZR Fit 10.5 head on a FlightScope X2 launch monitor.  I hit 20 “good” shots with each shaft, changing frequently so that fatigue was not an issue, nor did I get grooved with one shaft to the detriment of fairness.

Testing was done at Golf Nation in Palatine, IL, one of the best indoor golf facilities in the country.

*NOTE: Testing has moved back inside for the winter, and our FlightScope seems to be producing somewhat different numbers indoors compared to outdoors.  To greater or lesser extents, ball speed, club head speed, and spin are all coming in lower than they did outdoors, hence the carry number is smaller.  That said, it’s still an apples-to-apples comparison, so no attempt has been made to “normalize” the numbers: we’re publishing the numbers straight off the FlightScope, as always.

ANALYSIS

You can see from the dispersion chart that the majority of my shots landed in very playable territory, which is really the major selling point of this shaft, in my opinion.  The dispersion with the 70X and 50S were a bit worse because they were too stiff and too light for my taste, respectively.

One thing to know about the Fuel is that it really feels quite stiff-to-flex.  I’ve preferred a few X flex shafts lately, but with the Fuel my best results came with the 60S and 70S.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the launch and spin were very consistent across the weight and flex range.  If you want to try a light weight shaft, but you’re afraid of it being “whippy,” the Fuel is worth a look.

The Peanut Gallery

For this review, I was lucky enough to have a number of other people test the Fuel.  The first was Golfspy Tim, who sent me this straightforward text:

“This shaft seems to make the ball go straighter.”

Additionally, I had some of the regular Peanut Gallery members test the Fuel.  Not one hesitated about putting the Fuel in their bag.  One player, a PGA Professional who plays near scratch, told me that while he hasn’t liked much from Fujikura in the past, he really liked the Fuel and would like to put one into his 3W.

Finally, a master club fitter who tests absolutely everything told me, “Fujikura really has something with the Fuel.  I normally play a 60X, but even with the 60S I was hitting ropes.”  He loved the feel and said the results just couldn’t be argued with.

Conclusion

There are lots and lots of good products every year, but only a couple that are different enough to make you say, “Wow, that’s really good.”  To steal one of T’s favorite words, “the Fujikura Fuel is special.”

The Fuel is the first shaft that got 100% “I want to bag that” approval. If you need a little feel and kick, it has that.  If you want a stiff tip and limited “torque-y-ness” ©, it has that.  Bottom line: it’s just damned straight.  And long.

If you’re a longtime Fujikura fan boy, the Fuel will validate your love.  If you’re not, give the Fuel a chance to change your mind.  You can thank me later.

Just a quick note to everyone out there sitting on the fence deciding whether to buy this shaft. I have the Taylormade R15 and have run the gamut of shafts including the Speeder 661 that came with the club. I have struggled with consistent dispersion but the few times I connect, I can get a bomb. After reading tons of reviews I decided to buy a used fuel 60 stiff and try it out. As a comparison to you, I swing 102-105mph with a quick tempo. The first thing I noticed was that my ball dispersion GREATLY improved except on the most ridiculously sloppy swing. I also found that I lost a few yards BUT being in the short grass was easy to trade a couple of yards for. I really didn’t feel a stored energy whip, a shaft that was stiffer than the label rating or a shaft that was uncontrollable. When hit, the shaft was incredibly smooth no mater if I made a controlled swing or swung out of my shoes a bit. This shaft is advertised as having a low ball flight. I really didn’t notice that but it did seam to have a controlled medium flight that did not balloon and went straight more than not. I really don’t think I wouldn’t have an issue with the 70 weight version trading even more control for a little distance. For me this shaft compares close to the old Diamana silver blue board shafts that I still have in my 3 wood. I think if I find a great used deal, my 3 wood shaft will be replaced.

Had a quick questions when would you have a preference over the Kuro Kage 60 or the Fujikara Fuel 50, I am looking at the cobra amp cell drivers and that is the shaft choices, swing speed 94 on average, also trying to decrease flight and spin somewhat. I have hit both sort of on the fence Fuel felt better in stiff 57 gram shaft, very close
      Any help is greatly appreciated

      Hey Matt, Great Review!!

How would this shaft (60 or 70x) compare to the Motore Speeder vc 6.1 0r 7.1x? I have about a 107-110 mph driver ss and am looking for something with low/mid flight, low spin, and a tighter dispersion than my f1 75x.

      Thanks for your time!

      Vince,

As always, the best thing to do is to get fit.

That said, my GUESS is that the Fuel would be a better choice than the Speeders you mention for lower flight and tighter dispersion.

Great review and after reading it decided to buy the Fuel 50 reg for my R1 TP. All I can say is WOW…this shaft is really nice. I was hitting a lot of slices, fades and some straight shots with my TP shaft. After I put the Fuel in my R1 I’m now hitting straight drives and some fades. Indeed this shaft is freakishly straight. I have not hit one slice in 2 rounds since changing to the Fuel. My scores are coming down because I’m landing in the fairways almost every drive now instead of being OB or under tress to the right. I’m so impressed with the Fuel I’m going to put one on my Stage 2 3 wood next! Thanks for the great review it was the deciding point me for buy this shaft.

Incredible shaft. I have been a struggling 13 handicap (former low single digit). My drives have been a problem and I have been searching for “the driver” and should have been searching for “the shaft”. First time out with the 60s fuel missed one fairway and that was because I drove it through the fairway. Freakishly accurate is right on and picked up nearly 20 yards to boot!

I just went to a fitter, a real fitter not big box. And they had these shafts in the mix.

My smash factor went from 1.5 to 1.52 and distance was up, spin was down and my dispersion with with the fuel 70s x flex was 40% tighter than anything else i tried. I just had a hard time hitting a bad shot with it….

      Obviously I’m putting one in.

      Thanks for the review

To everyone asking for shaft recommendations and comparisons:

While I’m sincerely flattered that you want my opinion, the only answer I can give you is “I don’t know.” If you read our labs articles, you know that fitting is individual and there are no simple rules. Please see a good, reputable club fitter like Club Champion and let them set you up with the best equipment for your game.

      Hello Matt,
Sorry to bother you about a review that you did so long ago. Its actually my first time seeking advice on the web so I hope you are still out there and can help. I was fit for the 910d3 with the made for ahina 72 last year and am now about to purchase an adams super ls and initially was going to get it with a d+62. However after reading your article it seems as if in an apples to apples comparison this shaft outperfoms it hands down. Now I know nothing provides a true answer except for a proper fitting as to how a shaft is going to perform for each individual but I was fit for the d+ as well due to its low launch and low spin characteristics and am not in a position to try the fuel. The person I am ordering the club from says he can get one for me though so I just wanted to ask real quick. The fuel in general seems to have just about the same traits with better feel and produced significantly better ball speeds. All things considered would you say that is accurate? Again sorry for the bother just wanted to ask as it appears those involved in your testing liked the fuel much more than the d+62. Thanks for all of your help and hard work helping us!

      Clinton,

No trouble, thanks for reading a review I did so long ago. :)

While I would say that I, and other testers, did like the Fuel better than the D+, I would be hesitant to compare the numbers from one review to the numbers in another. The only numbers I like to compare are ones gathered from the same session. Over the course of the winter testing season, we’ve had numerous updates to the Flightscope firmware, I’ve had it set up in a couple different locations at Golf Nation, I dropped some swing speed then picked it up again, and my swing is not the same every day. These are a few reasons, off the top of my head, why I don’t like to use different sessions as apples to apples comparisons. That’s not to say the numbers are worthless, they’re just not gospel.

All that said, if you have no possible way of getting to a fitter who can let you try the Fuel vs. the D+, and you twisted my arm and forced me to recommend one blindly, I would recommend the Fuel. I simply haven’t met anyone who doesn’t think the Fuel is really good. But again, if you can, try before you buy.

      Hope that helps.

      Best,

      Matt

All I can say is Thanks so much!! I didnt know if I would hear back from you and I certainly did not anticipate hearing from you the same day!! I will say after being fit and seeing the benefits of it I am truly hesitant about purchasing something I havent hit. However, all of the reviews of the fuel sure are tempting me! Thanks again for getting back to me and in such quick fashion as well. It is truly appreciated!! by the way did you like the D+ more or less than the ahina? Just curious and if theres no time to respond its understandable. Thanks again!!

      Clinton,

No problem at all. I feel that if someone takes the time to ask a question, it would be pretty rude not to answer!

Personally, I like the Ahina more than the D+. To me, it feels smoother.

Hit the feul in my rbz today thanks to Matt and the great fitter (Jim) at club champion philly. What a great place the atmosphere when you walk in everything is professional tithe max.

Now on with the shaft. The tightness or lack of dispersion on the shaft held up well against my xcon 7. With the feul shaft being a little heavier Jim tried some extra head weight with my matrix and we had the results close but there was a slight edge to the feul shaft. Worth a look probably! for the minor consistencies again probably but at 225 I don’t know if I am ready to drop another couple bills just yet. If I get the new r1 maybe ahahahahha.

I really went in knowing something was up with my 3w and low and behold Jim saw good numbers but realized my feedback was again leaning toward weight and feel. added the needed swing weight and bam I was sending them on ropes. The feul 60 fairway wood shaft was too light and ended up all over the map. Now if they had the 70 to try out maybe but they didn’t. We also had a chane To hit A couple rocketbladez irons with aerotechs shafts which I have been tinkering. Club champ has a firm believer in me and being able to see everything with the trackman was great. No bloated 300 yard numbers just pure golfer dreams data.

Matt thank you and I want to give Jim another shout out he is a consummate professional. If you live in the area get over to see them top to bottom great spot!!!!!

Interesting that you compare it to the F1. No doubt that’s the spot in the price line up that the Fuel takes, but purely on feel and performance, I never would have compared the two. I never thought much of the F1/F3 line, just run of the mill to me, but the Fuel is really really good.

if you read the whole thing…even the forum comment at the bottom it sounds to me like these are the graphite version of the Ctaper

soft but stiff tip low spin and really nice dispersion …even on a less than perfect hit

      just interesting..

they look cool in the see through to matte black that would look pretty awesome on the newer model pings (my I20)
      but i hate the orange

My ctapers dropped my dispersion by quite a bit mostly because they brought spin down …but it makes me wonder about this shaft for woods.

      Eric,

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.

Is your question asking me to compare the Fuel to the D+ or are you asking if they are comparable/similar? I’ll try to answer both. I think that in the big picture, they’re reasonably similar: mid-launch, low-ish spin, softer butt, stiffer tip. All that said, in my opinion, the Fuel is a MUCH better shaft. It feels better and the dispersion is much better.

On the point of dispersion, one thing to note: the dispersion number for the Fuel is not out-of-this-world good, which may lead some people to wonder why I’m saying that it’s so straight. The reason for my praise has to do with mishits and bad swings: there were a number of shots with the Fuel that I was 100% sure I would be erasing…until I looked at the Flightscope and saw good results. To me, that’s extremely valuable on the course because it can be the difference between hitting 3 off the tee and having a shot at a GIR.

      Hope that answered your question.

      Best,

      Matt
